When Jagannath Shelke received an outrageous electricity bill of ₹8,75,830 for the consumption of 55,519 units in April, he couldn't cope with the pressure and decided to end his life. The 40-year-old lived in a tiny 2-room tin shed in the <keyword id="698768" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatnagar">Bharatnagar</keyword> in <keyword id="6354237" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="aurangabad">Aurangabad</keyword>, a small city in the western Indian state of <keyword id="13126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, with his family. According to the police, he left a suicide note claiming the bill was the reason he hung himself from the ceiling fan. An officer from the Garkheda police station told <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/aurangabad-vegetable-seller-ends-life-after-receiving-electricity-bill-for-865-lakh/article23837838.ece" data-type="tilCustomLink">The Hindu</a>, “The deceased was apparently under severe stress after getting a bill with such figures. He pinned a note to his body saying he was extremely distressed with the humongous electricity bill and hence was forced to take his own life. We are in the process of lodging a complaint.” The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (<keyword id="6360872" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="msedcl">MSEDCL</keyword>) released a statement saying the section engineer at its Garkheda station punched incorrect meter readings, as 61,178 KWH instead of 6,117.8 KWH. This lead to the generation of the inflated bill. The MSEDCL claims it has fired the billing clerk responsible for the error. Apparently, on receiving the bill, the distraught vegetable vendor approached the MSEDCL authorities but was ignored and asked to pay up. The victim’s family have now refused to take possession of the body and have asked for a case to be lodged against the electricity board. The police have registered a case of accidental death for now.

Mumbai, Mar 13 () The Maharashtra IndustrialDevelopment Corporation (MIDC) will soon purchase anddistribute power at low tariff rates, state IndustriesMinister Subhash Desai told the Legislative Council on Friday.Desai made the announcement while replying to acalling attention raised by NCP's Kiran Pawaskar."The state-run Maharashtra State ElectricityDistribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) charges around Rs 9-10 perunit, while neighbouring states supply power at Rs 6-7 perunit," Desai said.To break this pattern, the state plans to procure apower distribution licence for MIDC to keep tariffs on lowerside, he said.The MSEDCL claims that it has to give power subsidiesto the tune of Rs 10,000 crore to farmers every year, makingelectricity costlier for industries, he said."We don't want to affect the growth of industries inthe state in the name of subsidising power tariffs forfarmers," the minister said.Once the MIDC gets power distribution rights, thestate will be able to purchase power at lower rates andfacilitate industries, he added. This meant that these coal reserves had coal reserves to only last less than five days. The electricity authority has not shared any updated information since then.
