Pre-owned e-commerce platform CARS24 on Thursday said that around 600 employees have been let go based on their poor performance and not owing to any "cost cuts".<br /><br />Calling it "business as usual", the company which has nearly 9,000-strong workforce, and is in the process of hiring more globally, said its business is actually growing in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, the <keyword id="30350" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="middle-east" source="Orion">Middle East</keyword>, Australia and <keyword id="53564" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="southeast-asia" source="Orion">Southeast Asia</keyword>.<br /><br />"This is business as usual as these are performance-linked exits that happen every year," the company said in a statement shared with IANS.<br /><br />In December last year, CARS24 closed a $400 million round of funding, including a $300 million Series G equity round alongside $100 million debt from diversified financial institutions.<br /><br />The platform was valued at $3.3 billion, about double the valuation from its previous round in September 2021.<br /><br />Leveraging the latest technology advances, CARS24 has set up multiple state-of-the-art 'Mega Refurbishment Labs,' thus creating "new industry benchmarks for high-quality used cars".<br /><br />CARS24 said it will continue to enhance its superior technology and build a gold standard for quality used cars globally.<br /><br />The company recently announced the launch of seven 'Mega Refurbishment Labs' (<keyword id="289885" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mrl" source="Orion">MRL</keyword>s) in India -- an industry first, and one MRL in the UAE which is among Dubai's largest ever commercial leasing deals.<br /><br />"CARS24 has aggressive plans for 2022. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Russia's Vladimir Putin will host North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Vladivostok, reports say. </li><li>The leaders will likely discuss potential arms deals, analysts say. </li></ul><p>Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be desperate for North Korea's stockpile of weapons, but they're outdated and unreliable, according to experts</p><p>It follows reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing to make a rare foreign trip to visit President Vladimir Putin in Russia.</p><p>The planned meeting is raising concerns over a new weapons deal between the authoritarian leaders.</p><p>Putin is seeking to bolster his forces as they battle Ukraine's counteroffensive, and Kim is seeking supplies and diplomatic support amid North Korea's international isolation. </p><p>But analysts believe that North Korea's weapons stockpiles are aging and ineffective, and won't provide Putin with the solutions he needs in Ukraine, where his troops are facing equipment and ammunition shortages. </p><p>John Everard, who served as UK ambassador to North Korea between 2006 and 2008<a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-66713476" target="_blank" rel="noopener">, told the BBC</a> that while North Korea has stockpiles of weapons that Moscow needs, "they're in very poor condition."</p><p>Ben Wallace, <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-russia-war-latest-ukraine-reaches-final-layer-of-key-russian-defence-human-trafficking-ring-coercing-cubans-to-fight-for-russia-12541713" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the former UK defense secretary,</a> meanwhile accused Putin of "begging" for outdated North Korean weapons in his desperation to secure new weapons supplies. </p><p>The meeting comes amid Ukraine's counteroffensive to drive Russian forces back from territory they occupy in south and east Ukraine. Both sides in the conflict are quickly running through their stockpiles of equipment and ammunition, and struggling to resupply their front line troops quickly enough. </p><p>Putin is casting his net widely in his search for weapons and military equipment, calling on allies in other states hostile to US global influence, including Iran and North Korea, which are struggling under international sanctions. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-using-north-korean-rockets-against-russian-forces-2023-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">Last year, US official claimed that North Korea</a> had begun selling Russia rockets and artillery shells in contravention of a 2016 UN Security Council resolution backed at the time by Russia. Such Soviet-era equipment would be readily compatible with Russia's weapons. </p><p>But analysts believe that North Korea's weapons are in a shoddy state, and are unlikely to make a decisive impact in Ukraine. </p><p>They point to an attack by North Korea on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010, when around half of the 170 shells fired by North Korea using a multiple rocket launcher, or MRL, failed to hit their target. </p><p>"This high failure rate suggests that some [North Korean]-manufactured artillery munitions – especially MRL rounds – suffer from either poor quality control during manufacturing or that storage conditions and standards are poor," a report at the time by 38 North, a US-based site that monitors North Korea, said. </p><p>Last year, Ukraine claimed to have seized a batch of North Korean rockets from Russia and fired them back at their enemy, with one Ukrainian troop commenting on the poor quality of the weapons. </p><p>"They are very unreliable and do crazy things sometimes," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-using-north-korean-rockets-against-russian-forces-2023-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">he told The Financial Times. </a></p><p>While North Korea could also potentially supply Russia with its more sophisticated, long-range missiles, these would be more difficult to export than its ammunition, as it might require specialist equipment to fire them, Go Myong-Hyun, a senior research fellow at the Asan Institute of Policy Studies in Seoul, <a href="https://archive.ph/MiLGj#selection-339.0-339.124" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Wall St. Journal last year. </a></p><p>"Russia is looking to North Korea for a large quantity of conventional weapons rather than sophisticated ones," said Go.</p><p>However, other analysts believe that in sufficient quantities, North Korean ammunition could still be useful to Russia. </p><p>"With ammo, quantity has a quality of its own," Michael Kofman, director of the Russia Studies Program at CNA, a US-based think tank, <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/russia-might-be-buying-north-korean-arms-but-are-they-reliable-/6736135.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told VOA. </a>"Lower quality doesn't mean 100% doesn't work."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Russia is seeking weapons and ammunition from North Korea to continue its war in Ukraine. </li><li>In return, Kim Jong Un could receive food and advanced technologies for satellites and nuclear submarines.</li></ul><p>Russia's desperation and pariah status are growing and forcing President Vladimir Putin to turn to North Korea to fuel his war in Ukraine. Both sides stand to gain, but a partnership could be a big win for North Korea.</p><p>Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the Amur region of Russia for a summit with Putin. Western officials previously warned that the two nations had been negotiating an arms deal of sorts that could replenish dwindling Russian ammunition stockpiles. </p><p>One Western official <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-66771568" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the BBC</a> that Russian forces fired between 10 million and 11 million artillery shells in 2022 after the initial full-scale invasion in February, and while Moscow could up its domestic production to around 2 million shells annually, that's not enough to satisfy Russia's insatiable shell hunger. That is where North Korea could come in: providing rockets and shells.</p><p>"The ammunition will be a morale booster that will increase the combat capability of the soldiers. This will contribute to a longer war and increase Russia's chances," retired South Korean Army Lieutenant general Chun In-bum told Insider.</p><p>In return for its munitions, which it has in abundance, North Korea could receive advanced technology it doesn't have yet — satellite support, which Putin <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-66783384" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed he'd be providing</a>, according to Russian state media, as well as capabilities for nuclear-powered<strong> </strong>submarines.</p><p>North Korea could also receive petroleum products and food, which, according to a United Nations Security Council meeting this past August, North Korea desperately needs as its people starve. Part of the country's inability to feed its population comes from its "Military First" policy, Elizabeth Salmón, the UN special investigator on human rights in North Korea, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/north-koreans-face-increasing-repression-threat-starvation-un-says-rcna100564" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said during the summit</a>, as Kim prioritizes the country's defense budget. </p><p>Thus, an alliance would surely be mutually beneficial in the short and long term. But it also signals something bigger between the two.</p><p>"There is a reason why North Korea has been open and consistent with its public support – both political and material – to Russia's war efforts," said Jenny Town, director of 38 North, an analysis publication of The Henry L. Stimson Center, "as they stand to gain from that relationship in a multitude of ways that are low political risk to Kim Jong Un and high reward."</p><div type="image" title="North Korea leader Kim Jong Un observes artillery fire competition in North Korea." height="1555" width="2362" msid="103907896" hostid="261" sizebytes="115054"></div><p>When Kim left his so-called "Hermit Kingdom" last week, it was clear something was shifting. The trip was the dictator's first known international departure in more than four years, the last also being to Russia in 2019 for a meeting regarding North Korea's nuclear program. A Putin-Kim partnership specifically involving arms and ammo for Russian soldiers in Ukraine has been in the work for months at least, though, as Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desperate-russia-defense-chief-flew-north-korea-ask-for-ammo-2023-8">visited the DPRK</a> in late July to, according to a top White House official, ask for support.</p><p>"We remain concerned that the DPRK continues to contemplate providing military support to Russia's military operations against Ukraine," White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby said at the time, referring to North Korea by its official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea.</p><p>If North Korea were to strike a deal, it's certainly got the stockpile to do so — nominally assessed at the unclassified level as being enough for three to six months of war, according to Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., a Senior Fellow for Imagery Analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a North Korean defense and intelligence affairs expert.</p><p>Pyongyang could offer enough to provide a stopgap for Russia, and considering North Korea's extensive industrial infrastructure for weapons systems, more could be on the way. "The challenge is that it doesn't operate at full capacity typically," Bermudez said, adding that North Korea is "operating at a maintenance level as opposed to a wartime level" and it'll take them time to ramp up production if they're to provide Russia with ongoing support. </p><p>And while their means of production are older and manufacturing is a relatively slower process, it doesn't necessarily mean they produce inferior munitions — but there has been "some quality control issues" with ammunition sent overseas by North Korea, Bermudez said. </p><p>A 2010 North Korean artillery strike on Yeonpyeong Island, for instance, saw an estimated 20 of 80 rounds fail to detonate. "This high failure rate suggests that some DPRK-manufactured artillery munitions — especially MRL [Multiple Rocket Launcher] rounds — suffer from either poor quality control during manufacture or that storage conditions and standards are poor," a <a href="https://www.38north.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/38North_SR11-1_Bermudez_Yeonpyeong-do.pdf">38 North 2011 report</a> said. </p><p>Some other experts and analysts suggested in the days leading up to the Putin-Kim summit that North Korean munitions were outdated and unreliable. It's unclear what specific munition Russia would be seeking and what the condition of said ammo would be in, but it frankly might not matter if Moscow is desperate enough.</p><p>"North Korean arms, especially if provided beyond just stockpiles but including new production, could help prolong Russia's warfighting efforts. Although North Korean production efforts would likely need additional resources of raw materials and/or energy to be increase output in substantial quantities," Town told Insider. </p><p>But while "North Korean artillery and munitions are useful" for Russia, "this whole relationship is signaling a shift in how Russia values military cooperation with North Korea – both for war efforts, but in a broader war against the West," she added.</p><div type="image" title="North Korean soldiers attend a mass rally to celebrate the North's declaration on November 29 it had achieved full nuclear statehood, on Kim Il-Sung Square in Pyongyang on December 1, 2017." height="3203" width="4812" msid="103907897" hostid="261" sizebytes="379972"></div><p>That "broader war against the West" may include giving North Korea what it's currently lacking.</p><p>Officials <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/04/us/politics/putin-kim-meeting-russia-north-korea-weapons.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speculated to The New York Times</a> the wish list included advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines. The latter would be especially timely given North Korea unveiled a "tactical nuclear attack submarine" days before the Putin-Kim meeting which appeared to be a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-new-missile-sub-shoddy-us-allies-cant-ignore-2023-9">heavily refurbished Cold War-era Romeo-class</a> vessel that an naval expert called "kind of shoddy."</p><p>According to Bermudez, food and petroleum products are likely the top requests, but technology and resources, such as "scientists, technicians, engineers to improve what North Korea is doing" are up there as well. As for satellites, North Korea maintains the ability to produce its own satellite launch vehicles, but they may need help ironing out stage separation and reliability details. </p><p>Its air force, too, could use some upgrades, as it currently operates antique aircraft like the MiG-21 and MiG-23. That puts it at a major disadvantage to regional foes, like South Korea, Japan, and the US forces in each of these countries, all of which have fifth-generation fighters. </p><p>But Russia's assistance in these areas might look a little more like teaching North Korea to support itself rather than a direct technology transfer. Nuclear-powered submarines would require Russian technicians and updated capabilities, as the jump from diesel-electric to nuclear power isn't an easy one, but North Korea has been producing submarines for decades and, numerically, has one of the largest naval fleets in the world, though it is mostly made of small coastal vessels.</p><p>"What they really need though," Bermudez told Insider, "is quieting technology" to make noisier subs, like that Romeo rework, stealthier. </p><p>It's still not crystal clear what Russia might provide or how much effort it'll take to give North Korea what it wants. But Putin's willingness to work with North Korea speaks volumes about the Hermit Kingdom's increasingly prominent role as a political ally and indicates the decision to military cooperate with North Korea serves national interests that outweigh the negatives of sanctions, international community responses, or increased global isolation. </p><p>"I believe Kim will get everything he wants: money, technology, food and fuel," In-bum said, adding that he could get it directly from the Russians, if not through the usual nefarious channels like stealing and bribery. But again, there is more to it.</p><p>"Kim probably views it as the beginning of a relationship that he wants to develop," Bermudez said, adding that potential "real improvements" out of the two's relationship could include training exercises with Russian naval and air forces, and ultimately, would set Russia and North Korea as an aligned ideological opponent to the West. </p><p>"For both Kim and Putin this recent visit and possible future cooperation is a prestige builder," he said, but it remains to be seen how that evolves.</p>

Kim Jong Un launched a barrage of rockets and missiles in an unexpected show of force

Chandigarh, Dec 29 () To promote crop diversification in Punjab, the area under paddy cultivation has considerably reduced, with nearly 7.5 lakh acres of land shifted from paddy to alternate crops during the kharif season-2019, the state government said in a statement on Sunday.
<p>The area under non-basmati paddy during current kharif season was 57.27 lakh acres as compared to 64.80 lakh acres in 2018.
</p><p>Lauding the efforts of the agriculture department, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who also holds the agriculture portfolio, said this initiative would go a long way in conserving water as paddy is a water guzzling crop.
</p><p>The chief minister said the government has aimed to shift 7 lakh acres more area from paddy to cotton, maize, basmati and fruits and vegetables with a view to restoring the water balance in the state.
</p><p>The agriculture department has already shifted 7.5 lakh acres area from paddy to other crops this year. This includes about 3 lakh acres under cotton, 1.27 lakh acres under maize, 2.95 lakh acres under basmati and 17,500 acres under fruits and vegetables, he said in the statement.
</p><p>Highlighting the major initiatives undertaken by the department in 2019, Viswajit Khanna, Additional Chief Secretary (Development) said, "In addition to crop diversification, the department had also launched a vigorous campaign in Kharif-2019 to motivate farmers to reduce the use of agrochemicals, especially nine agrochemicals that have negative impact on basmati grain quality".
</p><p>This had brought encouraging results as the chemical residue level in basmati crop was found to be below minimum residue level (MRL), he said.
</p><p>"Following this initiative, the state farmers had produced high quality basmati crop and got remunerative prices of their produce inspite of weak international sentiment owing to restrictions on exports to Iran, which is a major market for Punjab basmati," Khanna said in the statement.
</p><p>To ensure judicious use of fertilisers, 24.30 lakh soil health cards have already been issued to the farmers after testing their soil and they were requested to apply need-based fertilisers as per Punjab Agricultural University recommendations, informed K S Pannu, Secretary Agriculture, Punjab.
</p><p>Giving details of pesticides consumption during kharif-2019, the agriculture secretary said the productivity of crops is crossing all previous records as a result of strict vigil on sale of spurious seeds and agro chemicals.</p><p>Pannu further stated that "the total usage of pesticides has registered a decline of 675 metric tonne (technical grade) during the current Kharif season, thereby benefiting the farmers to the tune of Rs 355 crore".
</p>The usage of pesticides was 3,838 MT worth Rs 2,000 crore during kharif-2018, he added.  SUN  RHL

<p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/ucdaviscoe/9735214584/">UC Davis College of Engineering/flickr</a></span></p>Daria Hazuda, Merck's vice president of infectious disease discovery and chief scientific officer of MRL Cambridge Exploratory Science Center, is a 25-year industry veteran.<p>That means the researcher has been in drug discovery - the earliest stage of the drug development process - long enough to see her fair share of successes, like the <a href="http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/2009/11/nj_natives_research_lead_to_me.html">development of treatments for HIV</a>, as well as failures. </p><p>But of all the years of innovation and cutting-edge ideas she's experienced, she told Business Insider that right now is the best time to be in the field.</p><p>"Today is the most exciting time to be in the biological sciences," she told Business Insider. </p><p>That's for a few reasons, she said. </p><ul><li>There's been an explosion of new research on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/link-between-microbiome-cancer-immunotherapy-skin-cancer-2017-2">microbiome</a>, or the microorganisms that live in and on our bodies that play a role in our overall health, compared to five years ago when there was just a trickle of new developments. </li><li>Then there's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-crispr-will-revolutionize-biology-2015-10">CRISPR</a>, the groundbreaking gene-editing tool that could one day manipulate cells to create new therapies. </li><li>There's also been better research on the immune system, which in turn is helping build a better understanding of infectious diseases, Hazuda said.</li><li>Research in to infectious disease biology, the research Hazuda works on, is now expanding beyond pathogens (the bacteria, viruses or other organisms that cause disease). Now, Hazuda and other researchers are learning more about entire "constellations of organisms," such as mosquitoes or zebra fish. These external creatures could be an important piece of human health, even if they're not inside the body, she said. </li></ul><p>But even with these developments, there's still a lot we don't know about the biological sciences, Hazuda said. It's why her employer Merck set up a video in which the company asked <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tudLTIVXUsI&amp;feature=youtu.be">people what inventions they can't wait for</a>. Very few mentioned new ways to treat diseases.   </p><p>"It's important for people to understand that there are still amazing discoveries that are yet to be made," she said. Portraits allow recruiters and company executives to relate to you and put a face to your brand as an employee. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Plus, Turk pointed out that p</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">rofile pictures can be used to add personality and color to make your profile stand out and visually appealing. But because these spaces are the first introduction that people might have of you when they discover you on LinkedIn, it's crucial to maximize them. Not only that, these two areas play a significant role in the keyword search results that a recruiter might see when they're searching for candidates, according to Brie Reynolds, a senior career coach at FlexJobs. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the headline in particular, Reynolds said they see a lot of clients in </span><a href="https://www.flexjobs.com/members/career-coaching"><span style="font-weight: 400;">their career coaching program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> who put their current job title and company name, but you can be more creative than that. "Put in several titles that best encapsulate what you do and what you'd like to do, or a job title and the industry you'd like to work in," she explained. "Most searches begin with keywords on LinkedIn to find candidates that match that profile," he explained. So, to increase your chances of being found, make sure you're adding keywords that are relevant to your skills on your profile.  </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whether it's in your summary or experience section, Turk said you should always optimize your profile to include these keywords. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, if you are a senior marketing executive (CMO or VP), Turk said you would want to include these keywords in your profile: marketing strategy, marketing leadership, marketing operations, budget management, brand development, marketing analytics, marketing technology, data-driven decision maker</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The idea is very similar to when people search on Google, they use keywords to find the most relevant page that matches what they're looking for," he added. </span></p><h2><strong>Build on your experience</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the most common things Turk said he's noticed on LinkedIn platforms is that a lot of people don't build out their experience with details. "Do not simply list your company with no other information - it provides very little detail to the recruiter to know if you are a fit for the role," he explained. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To remedy this, Turk suggested adding a sentence about what the company you work or worked for does to bring some context to your industry experience. Then, add another sentence or two about your role and responsibilities, but r</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">emember, when you are completing this section that it is not a resume, it is more of a teaser to qualify you for further consideration. "Things like hard-working, positive attitude, genuine, leadership style and more may not shine through the other sections of your profile," said Turk.
