After facing a backlash, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/investment/news/mozilla-cofounder-accuses-the-internet-browser-company-of-partnering-with-planet-incinerating-ponzi-gifters-by-accepting-crypto-donations/articleshow/88720262.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Mozilla</a>, the nonprofit organisation behind the Firefox web browser, has announced to stop taking <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/investment/news/cryptocurrency-new-years-resolutions/slidelist/88643906.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">cryptocurrency</a> donations. Cryptocurrency mining has come under intense scrutiny for its climate impact globally. "Starting today, we are reviewing if and how our current policy on crypto donations fits with our climate goals. And as we conduct our review, we will pause the ability to donate cryptocurrency," Mozilla said in a tweet late on Thursday. Last week, Mozilla tweeted that it accepts cryptocurrency donations, which "led to an important discussion about cryptocurrency's environmental impact". Mozilla began accepting Bitcoin for donations in 2014. The organisation, however, kept its faith in decentralised, blockchain-based technology. "Decentralised web technology continues to be an important area for us to explore, but a lot has changed since we started accepting crypto donations. In the spirit of open-source, this will be a transparent process and we'll share regular updates," said Mozilla. The Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index indicates that Bitcoin uses 122.87 Terawatt-hours of electricity every year -- more than the electricity combustion in the Netherlands, Argentina, or the UAE. According to Digiconomist, a cryptocurrency analytics site, a single Bitcoin transaction uses 2,106.37 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which equals the amount of power consumed by the average American household over 72.2 days.

Mozilla halts cryptocurrency donations after climate impact backlash

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <keyword id="12889886" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mozilla" source="Orion">Mozilla</keyword> cofounder condemned the firm's move to accept <keyword id="11892695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cryptocurrency" source="Orion">cryptocurrency</keyword> donations in a tweet Monday.</li><li>Jamie Zawinski said it should be ashamed to partner with "planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters."</li></ul>The Mozilla Foundation, the entity that oversees the Mozilla Firefox internet browser, is now accepting donations in cryptocurrency.One of the browser's founders is not happy about it.The company tweeted on Dec. 31: "Dabble in @dogecoin? HODLing some #Bitcoin &amp; Ethereum? We're using @BitPay to accept donations in #cryptocurrency."Jamie "jwz" Zawinski, who helped build the Mozilla Project that was released in 2002, tweeted in response that he's "here to say fuck you and fuck this.""Everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision to partner with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters," he said.Zawinski did not immediately respond to questions about his comments. Concerns around cryptocurrency's energy use and environmental impact have grown louder in recent years. Bitcoin mining, for example, eats up about 0.5% of the world's energy, about seven times more than Google consumes each year, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-mining-electricity-usage-more-than-google-2021-9">per a September analysis from The New York Times.</a>In 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-bans-bitcoin-payments-due-to-impact-on-environment-2021-5">stop accepting crypto payments vehicles,</a> citing their environmental impact. Zawinski was one of the original creators of Netscape when he cofounded the Mozilla Project, whose mission was to create an open-source internet for the masses. He<a href="https://www.jwz.org/gruntle/nomo.html"> resigned in 1999</a>, citing differences in vision between him and the company. The browser came to be known for its privacy focus, while giants like Google's Chrome grew up around it over the years — Firefox held about 7% of the US market share as of September, while Chrome held 60% and Safari held 18%, according to <a href="https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share/desktop/united-states-of-america">data from the web traffic analysis firm StatCounter.</a>"The Mozilla project has become too depressing, and too painful, for me to continue working on," he wrote in a <a href="https://www.jwz.org/gruntle/nomo.html">public resignation letter</a>. Mozilla cofounder accuses the internet browser company of partnering with 'planet-incinerating Ponzi gifters' by accepting crypto donations

The <keyword id="196610" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wikimedia-foundation" source="Orion">Wikimedia Foundation</keyword> (<keyword id="1603322" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wmf" source="Orion">WMF</keyword>) has announced to discontinue direct acceptance of <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=article-editorial" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">cryptocurrency</a> as donation. The WMF, the organisation behind <keyword id="71187" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wikipedia" source="Orion">Wikipedia</keyword>, received around $130,000 in crypto donations last year. "We are making this decision based on recent feedback from those same communities. Specifically, we will be closing our Bitpay account, which will remove our ability to directly accept cryptocurrency as a method of donating," the foundation said in an update. The WMF began accepting Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum donations in 2014. The foundations aid that it will "continue to monitor this issue, and appreciate the feedback and consideration given to this evolving matter by people across the <keyword id="196608" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="wikimedia" source="Orion">Wikimedia</keyword> movement". "The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to stop accepting cryptocurrency donations. White, also the creator of Web3 Is Going Just Great', proposed the WMF stop taking cryptocurrency donations in January this year. The company spent $1 billion on the raises, which bumped the average starting pay at Amazon warehouses from $18 to $19 an hour, and included a suite of other benefits.</li><li>The raises come in the run-up to Amazon's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-plans-new-prime-day-deal-event-later-this-year-2022-6">second Prime Day sales event</a> of the year. Employees said the pay increases aren't enough to combat encroaching inflation or quell discontent over heavy workloads.</li><li>Dozens of comments posted by Orlando warehouse workers on an internal messaging board show that at least some staff there saw the raises as an affront. But <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-challenges-fbi-demand-to-hack-into-san-bernadino-shooter-iphone-5c-court-order-2016-2">Apple refuses, arguing that doing so would set a dangerous precedent and make all its users less safe</a>.Battle lines are being drawn up: On one side, those who argue Apple has a duty to aid law enforcement in any way it can, and on the other, those who fear that the case risks setting a dangerous precedent - <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-fbi-iphone-dangerous-precedent-force-tech-companies-introduce-malware-san-bernadino-2016-2">that companies can be forced to hack their users</a>.Here's what the tech industry is saying.<h2>Apple</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueApple CEO Tim Cook.</div></div></div>First, Apple. After the ruling on Tuesday, CEO Tim Cook published <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-challenges-fbi-demand-to-hack-into-san-bernadino-shooter-iphone-5c-court-order-2016-2">a strongly worded open letter</a> to the company's customers explaining why Apple is opposing it."The government is asking Apple to hack our own users and undermine decades of security advancements that protect our customers - including tens of millions of American citizens - from sophisticated hackers and cybercriminals," he wrote. "The same engineers who built strong encryption into the iPhone to protect our users would, ironically, be ordered to weaken those protections and make our users less safe."Cook concluded: "While we believe the FBI's intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products. And ultimately, we fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect."<h2 class="p1">Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)</h2>The EFF is a civil liberties advocacy group. Predictably, they are supporting Apple on this one. <a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/02/eff-support-apple-encryption-battle">In a blog post</a>, deputy executive director Kurt Opsahl explained why:We are supporting Apple here because the government is doing more than simply asking for Apple's assistance. For the first time, the government is requesting Apple write brand new code that eliminates key features of iPhone security-security features that protect us all. Essentially, the government is asking Apple to create a master key so that it can open a single phone. And once that master key is created, we're certain that our government will ask for it again and again, for other phones, and turn this power against any software or device that has the audacity to offer strong security.<h2>Facebook</h2>Facebook has yet to make a public statement. A company spokesperson declined to comment when reached by Business Insider.The social network is a member of industry body Reform Government Surveillance, which has released a statement (below).<h2>Google</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">APGoogle CEO Sundar Pichai.</div></div></div>Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has spoken out on Twitter in support of Apple. "Forcing companies to enable hacking could compromise users' privacy," <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/sundar-pichai-responds-to-apple-case-2016-2">he wrote</a>."We know that law enforcement and intelligence agencies face significant challenges in protecting the public against crime and terrorism. We build secure products to keep your information safe and we give law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders. But that's wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices &amp; data. Could be a troubling precedent."<h2>Microsoft</h2>Microsoft has yet to make a public statement. A company spokesperson declined to comment when reached by Business InsiderThe tech company is a member of industry body Reform Government Surveillance, which has released a statement (below).<h2>Mozilla</h2>Mozilla, the organisation behind popular web browser Firefox, has Apple's back.Executive director Mark Surman said (<a href="http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2016-02/18/fbi-encryption-google-whatsapp-mozilla-apple">via Wired UK</a>): "[The case] sets a dangerous precedent that threatens consumers' security going forward. Companies should be encouraged to aggressively strengthen the security of their products, rather than undermine that security."<h2>Reform Government Surveillance</h2>Reform Government Surveillance is a coalition of some of the world's tech companies. Members include AOL, Apple, Dropbox, Evernote, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo. <a href="http://reformgs.tumblr.com/post/139513553507/reform-government-surveillance-statement">The group issued a statement offering Apple some support on Wednesday</a>:Reform Government Surveillance companies believe it is extremely important to deter terrorists and criminals and to help law enforcement by processing legal orders for information in order to keep us all safe. But technology companies should not be required to build in backdoors to the technologies that keep their users' information secure. RGS companies remain committed to providing law enforcement with the help it needs while protecting the security of their customers and their customers' information.<h2>Twitter</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">SCOTT EISEN/BLOOMBERG Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. </div></div></div>Twitter has yet to make a public statement.A company spokesperson directed Business Insider towards Twitter's previous support for <a href="https://www.savecrypto.org/">Save Crypto</a>, a petition to the White House arguing against any weakening of encryption, and towards Twitter's joint submission to Britain's proposed new spying law the Investigatory Powers Bill.It reads: "We reject any proposals that would require companies to deliberately weaken the security of their products via backdoors, forced decryption, or any other means."The social network is also a member of industry body Reform Government Surveillance, which has released a statement (above.)<h2>WhatsApp</h2>Facebook hasn't commented yet, but the CEO of Facebook-owned messenger WhatsApp has.Founder Jan Koum is strongly supporting Apple, saying that "today our freedom and our liberty is at stake." Koum is a vocal advocate of strong encryption technology, and it is incorporated into WhatsApp.Here's his <a href="https://www.facebook.com/jan.koum/posts/10153907267490011?pnref=story">full Facebook post</a>:I have always admired Tim Cook for his stance on privacy and Apple's efforts to protect user data and couldn't agree more with everything said in their Customer Letter today. We must not allow this dangerous precedent to be set.
