<ul><li>Seven people have died over the past week, while climbing down the world’s tallest mountain, <keyword id="14834" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mount-Everest">Mount Everest</keyword>. </li><li>Climbers are blaming the congestion on the mountain — the ‘<keyword id="3377583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Death-Zone">death zone</keyword>’ — where people run out of oxygen because they had to wait in line for too long. </li><li>There is only one rope on Nepal side of the summit to guide climbers up and down the summit of Mount Everest.</li></ul><keyword id="71724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-congestion">Traffic congestion</keyword> isn’t just a burgeoning problem in India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mumbai-is-now-the-most-car-congested-city-in-india-report/articleshow/68559891.cms">urban sprawl</a>. It extends to the far reaches of Mount Everest where it’s fatal. The world’s highest peak is racking up casualties at a rate that people are now calling it a ‘death zone.’ The most recent casualty of congestion on the world’s highest peak was Anjali Kulkarni. She had trained for six years for her trek, made it to the top but died on the way down because there was a build up of traffic, according to her son who <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/24/asia/everest-climbers-intl/index.html">spoke</a> to CNN. Overall, seven people have died on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/most-of-the-himalayan-glaciers-will-melt-by-the-year-2100/articleshow/67849339.cms">Mount Everest</a> last week — not due to the dangers of climbing, but while coming back after conquering the peak. What’s the hold up?

 This isn’t the first time that authorities have been called to address congestion issues on the Everest. In 2012, an image by Ralf Dujmovits of the ‘conga line’ at Mount Everest went viral highlighting the extent of overcrowding on the peak. Images of the peak show that there is only a single rope to guide climbers up and down Mount Everest’s summit. It gets all the more difficult as the peak is 8,848 meters above the sea level. Up there, the oxygen is 30% of what is available normally. In most cases, climbers carry oxygen masks and cylinders adding to the load that they have to carry. The longer a climber has to wait in line, higher is the probability of them running out of oxygen. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/49-yr-old-sherpa-climbs-mt-everest-for-the-23rd-time-breaks-his-own-record/articleshow/69341983.cms">lure </a>of conquering the world’s highest peak is only growing. And more unprepared adventurers are joining in the fray. The southern side of the summit from Nepal is interesting but more crowded. The situation is considerably easier from Tibet, but that’s only because the Chinese government gives out fewer permits. Nepal <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48415290">asserts</a> that overcrowding isn’t the only reason for the rise in casualties; and is also attributing blame to adverse weather conditions. Traffic congestion on the world’s highest peak is creating a ‘death zone’

Going to the snowy mountains is not all fun. Amidst it all lies avalanches so strong they can uproot anything that blocks their path. But here are some ways you can survive the deadly grip of an avalanche. Following is a transcript of the video.An average of 27 people in the US die every year from avalanches. The saddest part is that the victims are actually the ones triggering the avalanches in the first place. Avalanches are one of the most powerful forces of nature humans ever come across. In seconds, they can sweep trains off their tracks, uproot trees, and collapse entire buildings. They can also bury unsuspecting backcountry travelers under feet of snow. But there are some tricks you can learn to make sure that slope won't be your last.The number one way to avoid getting caught in an avalanche? It's pretty obvious steer clear of places where avalanches happen, namely snow-capped mountains with steep slopes. Specifically, slopes between 30-45 degrees.But if you insist on climbing Everest or skiing in Aspen, then your first rule of thumb should always be to check the daily avalanche forecast. Most avalanches happen right after a heavy snowstorm especially a windy one. Winds can pack the snow in more tightly, creating a strong, dense layer of snow on top.But you can't predict an avalanche by this layer, alone. The real threat is what lies underneath. If the underlying layer of snow is weaker than the top, all it takes is the right amount of pressure and WHUMPF!That's the first thing you'll hear. It's the weak layer collapsing under your added weight, like a house of cards. You may even see cracks form in the slab of snow around you. If you can, try to get off the slab, since that's what will be tumbling downhill in a few milliseconds.But if you're unable to escape, try grabbing on to a nearby tree. No trees? Then you're going to go for a ride. But don't lose hope! Immediately cover your mouth to prevent snow from getting into it and hope you don't crash into anything.Being in avalanche is like being caught in a violent ocean wave. Over 70% of deaths occur because the person can't breathe. That's why it's imperative that you try to keep your head above the swelling cloud of snow around you. This moment, right here, could make the difference between life and death.Don't worry too much about form. Thrashing, kicking, breaststroke whatever keeps you near the surface. And contrary to popular belief, if you're wearing a backpack, hold on to it! The second-highest risk of death is trauma from hitting a tree, boulder, or another stationary object at a high speed. Keep your backpack on, and you have an extra cushion behind you for protection.After the snow settles, there's not much you can do but wait for rescue. This isn't like the snow you're used to once it stops, the consistency will feel like cement. It's nearly impossible to dig out of. Your biggest concern now is breathing which will not be easy, and could even backfire on you. While snow is often porous, your warm breath can temporarily melt the snow that's in front of your face. And under the cold conditions, that water will likely re-freeze into ice, which is not good. What you're left with is a layer of ice that basically seals you in with the CO2 you're exhaling. You might as well tape a plastic bag over your head.To avoid suffocating, try to punch your hand to the surface. This offers a clear signal to rescuers and if you can wiggle it around creates an air shaft for you to breathe.Statistics show that you have the best chance of survival if you're rescued within about 15 minutes. After 20 minutes, your chances drop to about 30%. Thanks to advanced technology, there are ways you can drastically improve your odds. Attach an avalanche beacon to yourself before you even go into the backcountry. Rescuers can use it to track you down.Also consider wearing an airbag pack, which can keep you buoyant in an avalanche. Even with these tools, safety isn't guaranteed. So, be smart about when and where you choose to climb.

In total, the startup raised a little over $280 million from Kleiner Perkins, Meritech Capital Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Sapphire Ventures, First Round Capital, The Goldman Sachs Group, CapitalG, and IVP, among others, since it was founded in 2012. Today, many of these investors are seeing a lucrative payday."I fell out of my chair when I saw the tech because it's just so hard to build," Redpoint Ventures partner and former Looker board member Tomasz Tunguz told Business Insider. The round came with a pre-money valuation of $64 million. It's reasonable to assume that with such a hefty stake early on, Redpoint stands to make a tidy profit from its investment once the deal closes later this year."[Looker founder] Lloyd [Tabb] and the Looker team have this mission of empowering people to use data at scale to improve their lives and Google's mission is basically the same," Tunguz told Business Insider. "Looker built its data collection model on BitFury and Snowflake, so I'm excited to see the next-gen data stack come together now that they have access to Google's data set."Redpoint also participated in Looker's $30 million Series B in 2015, which Meritech Capital Partners led. The round was tied to a pre-money valuation of $150 million, <a href="https://my.pitchbook.com/profile/55558-27/company/profile#deal-history/27861-76T">according to Pitchbook.</a>"In the crowded analytics space Looker stood out for its product architecture (in particular the metadata layer), its extreme level of customer passion (customers often described Looker as valuable as oxygen), and its strong and unique company culture. Lloyd Tabb, Frank Bien and the entire team have built a remarkable business - and there's plenty more to come," Meritech Venture partner Rob Ward told Business Insider over email.First Round Capital was one of the earliest outside backers for Looker and led its $2 million Seed round in April 2013. That first round <a href="https://my.pitchbook.com/profile/55558-27/company/profile#deal-history/22686-85T">valued the company at just $14 million pre-money</a>, a figure that increased more than 400% by the company's Series A just four months later."When Looker (at the time the company was actually called Llooker) was coming into our partner meeting to pitch us, I called their customer references-and I was blown away by just how much these early customers loved the product," First Round Capital partner Bill Trenchard told Business Insider via email. "This handful of early customers was so receptive, they referred dozens of other potential customers to Looker. Their enthusiasm started a word-of-mouth virality that we rarely see with an <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> product."Looker will continue to operate out of its existing offices in Santa Cruz, California - a move that Tunguz is likely to appreciate. As a college senior in 2002, life was steady and strikingly unremarkable. Until my parents voluntarily went back to Afghanistan. To be fair, Afghanistan was always a part of my life. In 1981, my parents sold a documentary to CBS Evening News. They gathered a crew to film the reality of what Afghan people faced after the end of the Russian occupation.My mom ultimately had to miss out on shooting the doc because of, well, me - I was born later that year. But they were hooked. They went to Kabul as a couple in 1983 for ABC Nightline.My earliest memories of dinner-table conversation range from US involvement in Afghanistan/Pakistan relations to what trouble the mujahideen had caused to the ramifications of a newly formed Taliban.Still, all of this occurred in a faraway land with faraway people. By the time I left for college, Afghanistan was no more a part of my daily life than the peak of Mount Everest or the Palace of Versailles.<h2>Going back to Afghanistan</h2>Then the towers fell, and Afghanistan - the focus of my parents' life work - was on every American's lips.My parents mobilized. Their friend and ally, Sima Wali, was an exiled member of the former royal party, forced to leave after the Soviet coup in 1978. She'd since dedicated herself to organizing for women's rights and equality in Afghanistan, campaigning around the world. Finally, there was an opportunity to return to her homeland.Her journey needed to be documented, and my parents were the ones to make it happen. The fall of 2002 worked for everyone."Too bad you'll be in school or you could join us," Dad joked. "We can eat chicken on Chicken Street."I laughed, equally filled with relief and regret. That joke about Chicken Street, referencing a shopping hub in Kabul, was as old as I was.<h2>My parents' life insurance</h2>Before they set off, it was decided that I'd come back home for the duration of their trip (10 days) to be with my brother, who was a senior at a public school in a suburb of Boston. I was nervous. While my parents had branched out in their youth, they'd mostly worked at home while we were kids, researching and writing. Over the course of the next 10 days, and for the first time in memory, they would be unreachable.The house felt different when I walked in; somber yet excited. My parents asked that I sit down. Mom pulled out a manila envelope, slipping out a stack of papers. She laid them out before me."This is where we're staying, the Kabul Hotel downtown, our flights times and destinations, and one more thing." She shared a look with my father and barreled on. Kabul had been bombed a few months before, but things seemed relatively calm by the time they left.They called from the road. Dad marveled at how much lighter cameras had gotten since 1981 and talked about eating chicken on Chicken Street. I knew, generally, when their almost-24-hour flights ended, but with time zones it was still unclear when the flights began.They were set to arrive later that afternoon when it happened. I flipped on the news to find that the Kabul Hotel had been bombed earlier in the day. Timing-wise, I knew they were fine, they had to be if their flight was due to arrive in a few hours. But there was a niggling doubt. What if something had changed? What about cancellations? Those happened all the time.As I watched the on-screen glow of fire and wreckage in a smoldering corner of the hotel, I pictured that life insurance policy and felt my panic ebb. My brother and I would be OK. Their life insurance policy had given me reassurance when they had none. My parents called a few hours later and regaled me with tales, unaware of the bombing. I exhaled.
