Why Canadian Mounties train with dogs in sub-zero temperatures

This is Baylee. She was my partner as a police dog. I spent seven years on the road with her. She's retired. I should say semiretired, because she comes in to work here every now and then at the training academy to help out with the cadets.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Future members of the <keyword id="173973" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Royal-Canadian-Mounted-Police">Royal Canadian Mounted Police</keyword>, known as the Mounties, train with <keyword id="1220779" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Police-dogs">police dogs</keyword> like Baylee during their 26-week training at the academy. [wind whipping] When Business Insider visited the <keyword id="1649137" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="RCMP">RCMP</keyword> Academy in December 2019, temperatures in Regina, Saskatchewan, averaged around minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> Come on, let's go!</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Cadets run in these extreme conditions to get a feel for what it's like to pursue a suspect or search for a missing person in the frigid Canadian climate. And when they're in the field, they're often accompanied by a police dog, which is where Baylee comes in.</p><p><strong>Bates:</strong> She also goes on what are called uniform runs. And one of those uniform runs in particular is called a dog-handler run. It's supposed to simulate running with a dog handler, pursuing a suspect, or looking for a lost person.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> This canine-accompanied training only happens when a uniform run is scheduled and a dog is on-site [Baylee barking]</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> If you call the dog out in your detachment, you'd better be ready to run with the dog. And this is a valuable resource that you guys are gonna want to take advantage of. She's a bomb dog. She's a bad-guy dog. She's a jack-of-all-trades.</p><p><strong>Officer:</strong> RCMP police dog! Stop, or I'll send the dog!</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The RCMP uses purebred German shepherds for general duty teams. The breed is chosen for two key reasons: their thick coats can withstand extremely cold conditions, and, according to the RCMP, the breed has a "inhibitive psychological effect on potential wrongdoers." [dog barking]</p><p><strong>Officer:</strong> Head them off, Eric!</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The <keyword id="32596" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dogs">dogs</keyword> are bred at a facility in Alberta and start their training when they're between 12 and 18 months old. They're trained to detect traces of drugs and explosives, and there are approximately 160 dog teams across the country. [Baylee barking] A veteran police dog with seven years of service, Baylee and her former partner Brent Bates dropped by the academy to show these cadets the ropes.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> What is a dog handler's sole responsibility?</p><p><strong>Cadet: </strong>Stay with the dog.</p><p><strong> Darrah:</strong> Yeah, and what's he gonna be doing? While Constable Bates is working, what is he doing?</p><p><strong>Cadet: </strong>Focusing on the dog.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> Yeah, so if you call out a dog handler, what is your responsibility as the police officer?</p><p><strong>Cadet: </strong>Keep them safe.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> Yeah, so your responsibility is to look after Constable Bates, because his responsibility is to watch Baylee. When the dog works, it's two speeds: go, and then it's stop, take a second, sniff around. OK, we're moving on.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Once the run begins, the cadets stop sporadically to learn how to safely get Baylee over walls and fences, obstacles they may encounter in the field while in pursuit of a suspect or searching for a missing person.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> Everybody needs to get over this fence!</p><p><strong>Cadet:</strong> Let's go, let's go!</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But first, the cadets have to prove that they can climb over.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> I bet you there is a lot of times where you're like, maybe you're out for a run and it sucks going fast, and you're like, "You know what I'm gonna do? I'm just gonna slow down." When you are out with a handler, that is not an option. You can't be like, "Constable Bates, you're going too fast. Can you slow down?" 'Cause guess what? No. 1, he's not going to, and No. 2, he doesn't care that you're tired or you haven't eaten or that you're in s--- shape. He does not care. His sole responsibility is to get the bad guy. So, he comes to a fence like this, what's he gonna do? Is he gonna turn around and go, "That's a bit high." No, he's gonna get Baylee over the fence. And guess what you're gonna do?</p><p><strong>Cadets:</strong> Help Baylee over the fence.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> Yeah, let's do it!</p><p><strong>Bates:</strong> We end up going over a lot of fences when we're chasing bad guys. It's just the nature of how our work is. When people are fleeing from the police, a lot of times they'll jump fences to try and escape. For Baylee, this is how we do it. You're already up there, so you gotta grab her by the harness. You've gotta hold her up there till I get over. And then you're gonna let her down to me. Our main concern is the safety of the dog. We don't want the dog getting hurt chasing somebody. And so there's certain ways to get the dogs over the fence. What we usually do is get one person at the top of the fence, sit on top of the fence. And then I hand the dog up to them, and their job is to make sure she doesn't come back over the fence or jump down the other side and hurt herself.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> Awesome, good work.</p><p><strong>Cadet:</strong> Good girl.</p><p><strong>Cadet:</strong> That's awesome.</p><p><strong>Bates:</strong> We're lucky with Baylee. Baylee's very friendly and very easy to work around. Let's go, Baylee. All right, paws up.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Cadets also train to get Baylee safely over a chain-link fence.</p><p><strong>Darrah:</strong> All right, she's over, everybody over!</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Which, in frigid Canadian conditions, is easier said than done for the cadets themselves.</p><p><strong>Cadet:</strong> Oh, my God. [cadets chatter] [snow crunching]</p><p><strong>Bates:</strong> Ah, that's it, girl! Once we retired, this was a nice transition, because now she was at home, but I still get to bring her to work every now and then. She still gets to come with me once every 10 days or so. We come over here and she gets to feel like a real police dog again. [Baylee whines and barks] Come here. [Baylee pants] Good girl, stay.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> This interview was filmed in December 2019. In September 2020, Baylee passed away due to kidney failure. She served in the RCMP for seven years, during which she responded to more than 3,000 calls for service, and for every suspect or missing person she located, she was rewarded.</p><p><strong>Bates:</strong> Every time that she caught a bad guy or found a missing person, I always took her to McDonald's and got her a cheeseburger at the drive-through, so she was known for her cheeseburgers 'cause she caught a lot of bad guys. And so, when we retired and when we left Nova Scotia, they actually bought her a McDonald's gift card. [laughs]</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> According to the RCMP, Baylee recorded 132 cheeseburgers during her seven-year career.</p>

This is how Canada's iconic Mountie uniforms are made

The RCMP is <keyword id="6356687" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword>'s federal police force, known worldwide for their iconic scarlet tunics, referred to as the Red Serge. Each cadet gets fitted for their tunic about halfway through their 26-week training program.<br /><br /><strong>Cadet:</strong> It's a really exciting moment. It makes you very proud to be here. <br /><br /><strong>Cadet:</strong> When you put it on, you feel pride. <br /><br /><strong>Cadet:</strong> I cannot believe it when I saw myself in the mirror. <br /><br /><strong>Narrator:</strong> While this is what you're likely to see Mounties wearing in the field, the Red Serge is worn at ceremonial events. It's part of what's known as the kit that's issued to the 1,000 cadets that graduate from the RCMP training academy each year. Along with the tunic, the uniform includes trousers known as breeches, a Stetson hat, a Sam Browne belt, and a pair of high leather Strathcona boots. The tunics are made by a company in Quebec before being shipped here, to the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. They're made of wool and include a satin lining. <br /><br /><strong>Sean Lussier:</strong> Right now they're not as comfortable as you would think, but they are custom-made primarily for the look, so they're not gonna be as functional to do your everyday kind of job in them. <br /><br /><strong>Narrator:</strong> Here at the academy, a team of 20 tailors perform all the alterations for each cadet. <br /><br /><strong>Nila Filoteo:</strong> About eight of them are custom tailors, and the rest are general tailors, and general tailors usually do the pants and the breeches, and the custom tailors are the one that does the red tunic. We take them apart, we put them together, and do the alterations. <br /><br /><strong>Narrator:</strong> Alterations for each tunic can take up to two days. <br /><br /><strong>Tailor:</strong> Now you try on the overalls.<br /><br /><strong>Narrator:</strong> If an officer outgrows his or her uniform, they simply request a new one at no additional charge to them. According to the RCMP, the total cost of each cadet's uniform, including the Red Serge and their normal duty <keyword id="6373481" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clothing">clothing</keyword>, comes out to about 4,500 Canadian dollars. And about $500 of that cost is for the boots. Each pair is handcrafted by the Alberta Boot Company before being sent to the leather shop at the RCMP Academy, where each pair is custom fit to each cadet. <br /><br /><strong>Rod Johnson:</strong> So, we look after all of the brown ceremonial leather. Each pair of boots is fit to each individual cadet, whether that means stretching them or making them smaller. To stretch them, they are soaked in a tub and then we open them up with a series of blocks. A block that mimics the calf, a block that mimics the shin, and then, depending on the amount we need to stretch them, we open them up to the appropriate size that we need for each individual. Once we reach that size by blocking them like that, then we put them in our drying booth, and they dry for about a week so that they will take that shape permanently. We do up to 32 pairs of boots in a week, and then they're issued to the cadet, and they begin to do the arduous task of putting 20 to 40 different coats of polish on them so that they no longer look one-dimensional. After the cadets are done polishing them, they look more three-dimensional. <br /><br /><strong>Narrator:</strong> They might look shiny, but these pictures don't quite do them justice. When you see them in person, these boots boast an almost otherworldly sheen. To get there, it takes a lot of polish. <br /><br /><strong>Chris Darcy:</strong> We used to make them pay for it, but now Her Majesty decides she's gonna buy us polish. This is one of the techniques. The idea here is to build up the color. You see, the difference in color is pretty drastic for polished boot and unpolished boot. We get it, it's superhot water, and put a coat of polish on here. All we're doing is take the hot sponge, and we simply are rubbing the polish in. And it looks like it's doing nothing, and all that's happening is we're filling in the pores. So we would do about 20 coats of these. One of the tricks we do, though, is we take pantyhose. You put an old pair of socks in there, and it's kind of like when you sand your car, you start with coarse grit and go to a finer grit, and these pantyhose are actually a little bit finer grit, and we'd actually just brush it off. The longer you go, you start getting character in it, and it has a bit of a marbling effect as it takes the grain of the leather. All those memories you make shining boots with your troop mates. NASA photos show the destruction of the massive Canadian wildfire, which has grown 8 times since Wednesday

The internet is going wild over a conspiracy theory that Justin Trudeau has fake eyebrows

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>LAC LA BICHE, Alberta (Reuters) - A raging Canadian wild<span class="highlight">fire </span>grew explosively on Saturday as hot, dry winds pushed the blaze across the energy heartland of Alberta and smoke forced the shutdown of a major oil sands project.</p><p>The<span class="highlight"> fire </span>that has already prompted the evacuation of 88,000 people from the city of Fort McMurray was on its way to doubling in size on Saturday, the seventh day of what is expected to be the costliest natural disaster in Canada's history.</p><p>Police escorted another convoy of evacuees out of the oil sands region north of Fort McMurray, taking them on a harrowing journey through burned out parts of the city and billowing smoke. Some 1,600 structures are believed to have been lost.</p><p>With temperatures on Saturday expected to rise as high as 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit), officials said the weather was hindering efforts to fight the wild<span class="highlight">fire</span>.</p><p>"It is a dangerous, unpredictable<span class="highlight"> fire</span>, an absolutely vicious<span class="highlight"> fire </span>that is feeding off of an extremely dry boreal forest," Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told a media briefing.</p><p>The<span class="highlight"> fire </span>had scorched at least 156,000 hectares (385,000 acres) by Saturday morning, the Alberta government said. Officials warned late on Friday that the area affected by the<span class="highlight"> fire</span>, which they then said was 101,000 hectares, could double in size by the end of Saturday.</p><p>More than 500<span class="highlight"> fire</span>fighters are battling the blaze in and around Fort McMurray, along with 15 helicopters and 14 air tankers, the Alberta government said.</p><p>Within Fort McMurray, visibility is often less than 30 feet (9 meters) due to the smoke, making it still very dangerous to circulate in the city, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Kevin Kunetzki told reporters at a highway checkpoint.</p><p>Despite the<span class="highlight"> fire</span>'s rapid spread, Goodale said there was no indication that oil infrastructure was at risk.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>But the Syncrude oil sands project said Saturday it will shut down its northern Alberta operation and remove all personnel from the site due to smoke. There was no imminent threat from the<span class="highlight"> fire</span>.</p><p>About half of Canada's oil sands production capacity has been taken offline by the conflagration, according to a Reuters estimate.</p><p>While the fire isn't responding to conventional fire suppression tactics, firefighters and local authorities have turned to a high-tech solution to fight the fire: drones.</p><p><a href="http://www.elevatedrs.com/">Elevated Robotic Services</a> - which usually deploys drones for mining companies - has been contracted by the Alberta government to help firefighters pinpoint the cause of the blaze, according to Reuters.</p><p><span>"It's like Google Maps but 100 times better,"&#xa0;<span>Mat Matthews, the&#xa0;<span>company's operations and safety manager, told Reuters.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The drones will take images from the air, and hopefully pinpoint the blaze's ground-zero location to within a 30-foot radius. From there, investigators can search on foot for potential causes, and use that information to fight the fire.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></span></p><h2>Fleeing camps</h2><p>Earlier in the week most evacuees headed south by car on Alberta Highway 63, the only land route out of the area, in a slow-moving exodus that left many temporarily stranded on the roadside as they ran out of gasoline.</p><p>But other residents who initially sought shelter in oil camps and settlements north of the city found themselves cut off in overcrowded conditions. They were forced on Friday and Saturday to retrace their route back through Fort McMurray on Highway 63 as flames continued to spread.</p><p>Goodale said it was important to move those people south, given the risk that winds could shift and push the<span class="highlight"> fire </span>to the northwest of its current location.</p><p>The full extent of property losses in Fort McMurray has yet to be determined, but one analyst estimated insurance losses could exceed C$9 billion ($7 billion).</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Entire neighborhoods were reduced to ruins, but most evacuees fled without knowing the fate of their own homes. The majority got away with few possessions, some forced to leave pets behind.</p><p>Stephane Dumais, thumbing through his insurance documents at an evacuation center at Lac La Biche, said he has thought about moving away. But the idea doesn't sit well with the heavy equipment operator for a logging company.</p><p>"To me that's like giving up on my city," he said. "As long as it takes to rebuild it, let's work together. <p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fox Searchlight</span></p><p class="caption">Jay Chandrasekhar in "Super Troopers 2."</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Jay Chandrasekhar, the director and a star of Broken Lizard's "Super Troopers 2," spoke to Business Insider about how the cult-comedy sequel arose from a massively successful crowdfunding campaign.</strong></li><li><strong><span>Chandrasekhar also touched on</span> comedy's embattled relationship with critical reception, how the rise of President Trump affected the film's production, and the creative advantages of being in a comedy troupe.</strong></li></ul><p>Sixteen years after the release of "Super Troopers," the comedy troupe Broken Lizard has returned with a sequel to the movie that kicked off their careers.</p><p>Jay Chandrasekhar, the director and a star of "Super Troopers 2," spoke to Business Insider this weekend about how the film arose, out of necessity, from a massively successful crowdfunding campaign three years ago, which netted $4.6 million from 54,000 donors. </p><p>A comedy about a group of Vermont state police officers engaged in a border dispute with Canadian "Mounties," "Super Troopers 2" premiered to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-quiet-place-wins-weekend-box-office-i-feel-pretty-super-troopers-2018-4">a solid opening</a> over the weekend, raking in $14.7 million against the <span>$5 million to $7 million it was projected to hit.</span></p><p><span>Chandrasekhar also touched on</span> comedy's embattled relationship with critical reception, how the rise of President Trump affected the film's production, and the creative advantages of being in a comedy troupe.</p><p><strong>John Lynch: This is the first sequel that Broken Lizard has released. What sort of creative challenges did making a sequel present?</strong></p><p><strong>Jay Chandrasekhar: </strong>This one in particular was really hard because it had been a little while since the first one. We've made about five other films, but in the intervening years, the show business industry has moved entirely toward movies where the main characters have capes and tights. They're less interested in funding anything non-superhero. So, when we went to them and said, "Hey, we want to make this sequel," they said, "Great. Why don't you raise the money?" And we said, "Okay..." <em>[laughs]</em>.</p><p>We started raising money, and it was a little challenging, and finally we decided to crowdfund it. It was a high-risk bet, because if they didn't fund it, the movie never would have been made at all. So we took a gamble, we did it, and it really ended up, I mean, $4.6 million they gave us, 54,000 people. And the crowd-funding was sort of the beginning of the advertising campaign really. Three years ago when we started raising the money, that's when it really got like, every piece of art has to be good, every video had to feel close enough to the first one to give audiences the idea that, "Oh, they can still do it."</p><p><strong>Lynch: I saw a couple reports that the film is tracking to do well at the box office. Given the success of the crowdfunding, did you anticipate that it would be a success at the box office?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>You know, you can't ever be confident about the box office, because it can be anything. You never know what's going to happen. So, no. We have been incredibly surprised by the numbers, and excited. It's been great to see how many people have come out. I mean, it's fantastic. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fox Searchlight</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>Lynch: As a source of humor, a theme Broken Lizard has explored a few times now is "cultures clashing." It was in "Beerfest" prominently. What draws you guys to that comedic theme?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>It's an interesting thing, because while we were making "Super Troopers 2," and we were working with these Canadian guys, we started laughing, like, "Oh, so they're Germans" [the antagonists in "Beerfest"]. It is a theme that we seem to like. I think it's just, I don't know. I mean, we make kind of like macho, '70s style movies, and that just felt like they were the right opponents for us, you know? And it's fun to do accents in comedies. </p><p><strong>Lynch: There's a border dispute and themes of immigration as through line in the film. But you've also got our American turmoil as a backdrop, to some degree. You had the story idea for a while, but how did the cultural situation here in America inform the movie?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>Ultimately, these are very interesting times we're living in. When we shot the movie, it was the fall [of 2016]. We didn't know who was going to be the president. We did know that President Trump's "Make America Great Again" was certainly <em>the thing </em>of the campaign, and we thought, whether he wins or loses, or whether she wins or loses, that saying will probably last the test of time. So we put that in. But we try to stay a little bit away from politics. Everyone's talking about politics. We actually politically have our own opinions, too. <em>But </em>our fans are half stoners, and half cops, and half military. We'll do shows and have stoners sitting next to cops all the time. Our audience is on both sides of the aisle, and we're hoping that this film can be just a way for everyone to be like, "Okay, we can agree on that. We're just going to stay out of the political thing for a while." But, you know, sure. The movie has some political moments to it. I mean, obviously.</p><p><strong>Lynch: So this is the sixth feature film you've directed now, with the same crew. Has it gotten easier to direct, or how has your perspective on that changed?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>It's gotten easier to direct because I've done a lot of television. I've done about 110 episodes of television. I have shot a lot of shots. I've done scenes in a lot of different ways, multiple times. With these TV shows, I've shot a bunch of dinner scenes, and sex scenes, and fights. So when these scenes come up in our movies, I feel pretty confident about how to get them, and get them fairly quickly. Because we still have a fairly low budget, and we're still tight on time all the time, so we have to be more smart and efficient. Both "Super Troopers," one and two, were shot in 28 days. Number two is much more complex, but we are all just better at filming, because we've done it a lot.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fox Searchlight</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>Lynch: What about critical reception of comedies in general. Broken Lizard films, if you look on <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/jay_chandrasekhar">Rotten Tomatoes</a>, I personally feel their scores don't match the level of humor that's in them. I saw The New York Times gave you guys <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwid993audDaAhVszlkKHdA7AzsQFgg3MAE&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2018%2F04%2F19%2Fmovies%2Fsuper-troopers-2-review.html&amp;usg=AOvVaw0oUJqCHbuipfoObiwwcUU_">a critics choice</a> for this one, but how do you think of critical reception?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>Well, I gotta tell ya, man. The first "Super Troopers" had a 35% [critical] rating and a 90% audience rating. And I thought on this movie that the critics would say, "Well, we got that one wrong. Here's our chance to make up for it." But that didn't happen. What can you do? I think people get tired of movies when they see too many. I don't know what to say <em>[laughs]. </em>I just don't know what to say. We worked very hard on that movie. We wrote 37 drafts of that thing. It's a good movie. </p><p><strong>Lynch: I thought it was hilarious. Do you think film critics are too serious about it?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>I cannot tell you what happened. Except that some of them just don't like that movie. They also don't like that <em>kind</em> of movie, you know? It's that kind of movie that seems to bug them. And all us comedy filmmakers, we have to suffer the brunt of that for some reason. But that's the way it goes. </p><p><strong>Lynch: Moving forward for the group, what's in sight for now? I've heard there may be a "Super Troopers 3." How are you thinking of that at this point?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>I think we just have to see how the weekend goes. If the movie does well and the studio wants to make three, I would imagine we would be psyched to do that. We have another film called "Potfest" we would consider doing. We'll see what happens. We had a ball making this one, and we would have a whole story for the third one. We would have to write it. Takes a little while. But if things go well, we'll do it.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fox Searchlight</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>Lynch: Last question, about how you guys work as a troupe. Troupe comedy, it's been around forever, back to Vaudeville. How have you guys evolved as a troupe, and what do you think is the best part of writing in that sort of group?</strong></p><p><strong>Chandrasekhar: </strong>You know, we met each other when we were 18, so we have jokes that are decades old. And it gives you a perspective on a person that's a little different. We know each other very well and we have a sense of what kind of things make each other laugh. So it's been very fun. The writing meetings are fun. I mean certainly, we argue about what's a funnier joke, but we figure it out. Eventually, it's fine.
