The outlet reported the airport also faced disruptions in July when a fire broke out in the arrivals terminal. On this day, in 1669, an eruption at Mount Etna killed 20,000 people. <br /><br />However, this time something is different. <ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="12866200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cyrano" source="Orion">Cyrano</keyword>" director <keyword id="13278305" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="joe-wright" source="Orion">Joe Wright</keyword> said that <keyword id="13278303" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mount-etna" source="Orion">Mount Etna</keyword> erupted while <keyword id="13278304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="filming" source="Orion">filming</keyword> the movie on it. </li><li>Snow had previously forced filming to relocate further down the mountain from a first location.</li></ul><p>"Cyrano" director Joe Wright told Insider that while filming on active <keyword id="12132950" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="volcano" source="Orion">volcano</keyword> Mount Etna "seemed like a good idea at the time," unusual snowfall and a <keyword id="12671006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="volcanic-eruption" source="Orion">volcanic eruption</keyword> led to the crew having to improvise and switch locations before fleeing the mountain altogether. </p><p>"Cyrano," out now in the United States, is a musical adaptation of the Edmond Rostand play "Cyrano de Bergerac" starring Peter Dinklage as the titular character. Based on Erica Schmidt's 2018 stage musical adaptation, and with Schmidt herself penning the screenplay, the film also stars Haley Bennett as Roxanne and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Christian. </p><p>Filmed during the pandemic in the <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/on-location-cyrano#:~:text=Unlike%20many%20modern%20blockbusters%2C%20Cyrano,the%20streets%20of%20golden%20Noto.">Sicilian town of Noto,</a> Wright said that he wanted a "strong visual juxtaposition" for the film's battle sequence. And "there was Mount Etna," he told Insider — the volcano, which is still active, is located just over 120 kilometers (about 78 miles) from the film's primary location. </p><p>"We went up there and scouted and we found a position near the summit at about 16,000 feet, and we said, 'It's not gonna snow, is it?'" Wright recalled. "And they said, 'No, it never snows in December, only in February it sometimes gets some snow."</p><p>Wright told Insider that the crew built a set up at the 16,000-feet location, complete with World War I-esque trenches, a large camera platform, and a 100-foot Technocrane. </p><p>"We had it all worked out very, very precisely, and then four days before we were due to start shooting that sequence, it started snowing," Wright said. "It snowed and snowed, and buried our set and buried the camera platform, the camera crane, and actually made the whole set completely inaccessible. We couldn't get there."</p><p>Production was then forced to "improvise a new location" and set up at around 8,000 feet, where the air was still thin, Wright told Insider. Then, Mount Etna erupted.</p><p>"On the last day of shooting, the volcano chose to erupt," Wright told Insider. "We were having volcanic rock and dust and ash thrown at us, and so we picked up our camera cases and ran off the mountain."</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmlNMPtkSPA">Footage from NBC News published on December 14, 2020</a> shows lava and ash erupting from the volcano. Citing data from the <a href="https://www.ct.ingv.it/">Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)</a>, the <a href="https://volcano.si.edu/showreport.cfm?doi=GVP.WVAR20201216-211060">Smithsonian Institute's Global Volcanism Program reported</a> that the southwest part of the volcano's cone had collapsed on December 13, 2020, and lava flows continued through the following week. </p><p>"I remember that night, it was the 18th of December, and it took off from <keyword id="11917117" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sicily" source="Orion">Sicily</keyword> and we looked down through the aircraft window and you could see this burning red eye of the volcano mouth staring at us," Wright told Insider. "And we're like, okay, we're out of here."</p>

When rivulets</span><span> of magma force their way out of these vents, those small eruptions can spew dangerous amounts of lava and gas. </span></p><p><span>But the locations and threat levels of these vents are difficult to predict - eruptions can sometimes occur miles from the caldera's center. That leaves cities located on or near volcanic fields, like Naples, Italy, facing a constant risk of poisonous volcanic gas, ash, and explosive bursts of lava.</span></p><p><span>Now, however,</span><span> a group of scientists have figured out how to accurately pinpoint where on a volcano's surface or in a caldera's volcanic fields these damaging vent eruptions are likely to occur.</span></p><p><span>"Calderas have fed some of the most catastrophic eruptions on Earth and are extremely hazardous," the scientists <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/7/eaau9784">wrote in a new study</a> published Wednesday <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/7/eaau9784">in the journal Science Advances</a>. That hazard is often underestimated by local populations, they added.</span></p><p><span>Mount Kilauea in Hawaii, which erupted last year, is speckled with such vents. The eruptions forced nearly 1,500 people to flee their homes, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hawaii-kilauea-volcano-new-eruption-today-triggers-structure-fires-2018-05-04-live-updates/">CBS News reported</a>. </span></p><p><span>"These vents have lava coming out of them like fountains, which then leaks across the landscape like a slug," Eleonora Rivalta, the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5d41a4b7a209d3101c531985-2400/2014-10-30t120000z46087543gm1eaau0oms01rtrmadp3usa-lava-hawaii.jpg" border="0" alt="kilauea vent" style="color: #000000;" data-mce-source="Marco Garcia/Reuters" data-mce-caption="Smoke rises from the Pu'u O'o vent on the Kilauea Volcano October 29, 2014 on the Big Island of Hawaii." /><p class="source"><span>Marco Garcia/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Smoke rises from the Pu'u O'o vent on the Kilauea Volcano on October 29, 2014 on the Big Island of Hawaii.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>The scientists hope that insights from their new model could help communities like Hawaii's better prepare for and anticipate future eruptions.</span></p><h2>Magma's fickle pathways</h2><p>Magma, the<span> liquid or semi-liquid rock under the Earth's crust, makes up most of our planet's mantle (its intermediary layer). When magma pushes its way to the surface, that causes a volcanic eruption. </span></p><p>Magma likes to take the path of least resistance as it surges upward. So figuring out what that path is can enable scientists to predict where it will next breach our planet's surface. That's what Rivalta's team set out to do.</p><p>The easiest path, the researchers found, is for magma to move through rocks that are more "stretched out" than their nearby counterparts - less compressed, in other words. Although many geologists thought the path of least resistance would be through an existing pathway or fault, Rivalta's team found that vents are often "single-use only," meaning magma erupts through them once and never again.</p><p>Rivalta and her colleagues used these discoveries to make computer models of future magma paths to the surface. They compared the predictions of their model to the known eruptive behavior of vents across Italy's Campi Fleigrei, <span>outside of Naples</span><span>. This 8-mile-wide active volcanic field - known as the "burning fields" - first erupted almost 50,000 years ago, though the most recent major eruption was in 1538. </span></p><p><span>Rivalta's model accurately mapped Campi Flegrei's 70 eruptions over the past 15,000 years, including the highly damaging Monte Nuovo eruption in 1538.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5d419e5a100a242d7331f80b-2156/rivalta1hr.jpg" border="0" alt="campi flegrei caldera" style="color: #000000;" data-mce-source="Mauro Antonio Di Vito" data-mce-caption="The Monte Nuovo cone of the Campi Flegrei volcanic field in southern Italy, just outside Naples." /><p class="source"><span>Mauro Antonio Di Vito</span></p><p class="caption">The Monte Nuovo cone of the Campi Flegrei volcanic field in southern Italy.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Predicting the next Yellowstone eruption</h2><p><span>Between 1600 and 2017, <a href="https://appliedvolc.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/2191-5040-2-2">278,880 people around the world were killed</a> by volcanic activity and the consequences of those eruptions, like starvation or tsunamis. </span></p><p>Since the 1980s, deaths related to volcanic eruptions have been rather limited, as geographer Matthew Blackett <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deadliest-volcanoes-in-the-world-2017-4">reported in The Conversation</a>. She also wants to apply this new model to Mount Etna in Sicily, and use it to examine the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park.</p><p>That enormous volcano last erupted <a href="https://www.yellowstonepark.com/things-to-do/yellowstone-supervolcano">more than 640,000 years ago</a>.
