The classic cartoon series revolves around two friends named Motu and Patlu, who live in a fictional town called Furfuri Nagar. From being inanimate characters in kids’ magazine Lotpot, Motu Patlu was brought to life by Nickelodeon in 2012. Motu Patlu today reaches out to over 289 million viewers in seven languages across India, claims Nickelodeon. The show is amongst the top five shows on the channel, contributing 45% to Nickelodeon’s total rating. “Ten years ago, the Indian kids’ entertainment category was in need of indigenous characters and stories and Nickelodeon, with the launch of Motu Patlu, successfully paved the way,” Nina Elavia Jaipuria, head of hindi mass entertainment &amp; kids TV Network, Viacom18 said. Motu Patlu has to its credit over 1,000 stories across 560 episodes, 25 movies, and 20+ games across iOS and Android. They are also the first Indian animated character duo to have their statues at Madame Tussauds, Delhi. It was the fourth most searched show in the world in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/nickledeons-motu-paltu-becomes-the-most-searched-show-in-china/articleshow/70228055.cms">2018</a> on Google Trends. “Apart from being an exemplary piece of great storytelling, it is the affability and relatable camaraderie that made the duo a runway hit,” Anu Sikka, creative, content &amp; research, Kids TV Network, Viacom18 said. To celebrate ten years of Motu Patlu, the channel has also initiated a dance challenge, giving viewers a chance to feature on Nickelodeon’s social media pages. Cosmos Maya, the creators of Motu Patlu are now planning to capture a share of China’s $29 billion animation industry. “We have 4-5 new shows under production for China. I strongly believe that both India and China have similar culture, family values, and lifestyle,” said Suhas Kadav, Chief Creative Officer, Cosmos Maya to Business Insider India in an interview. The idea behind the shows is to weave in moral values into the cartoons. This might find takers in China as, like in India, families in both the countries want their children to watch shows under parental supervision. “Hence Chinese people have some inclination towards Indian content,” explains Suhas. He further added, “Motu Patlu has been the top show for more than five years. The shows growth also led to the growth of Nickelodeon in India. When we partnered with Nickelodeon it ranked fifth but it became No. 1 cartoon channel soon after the launch of Motu Patlu.” Motu Patlu was also the fourth most searched show on Google in 2018, said China Internet Report 2019. Infact, the series’ 21 short Youtube videos have grossed 22 million viewers. And its ‘local’ flavour is the reason for its success. “The content is authentically Indian. The setting is rural India. The stories and characters are local. The more authentically local the show is, the better it travels,” Ted Sarandos chief content officer of Netflix told Business Insider India. If the trend continues, Indian cartoons might give a tough competition to their Japanese counterparts. For decades, Japanese cartoons and characters like Shin Chan, Doraemon, Pokemon and Ninja Hattori have been capturing the minds of children around the world, telling authentic Asian stories. Now, it could be the time for Indian toons.

<ul><li>The lockdown has led to children watching more content, leading to a surge in viewership in the kids' genre.</li><li>Animation company Cosmos-Maya is the brains behind popular kids shows like Eena Meena Deeka, Tik Tak Tail and <keyword id="2404631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Motu-Patlu">Motu Patlu</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="3715456" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anish-Mehta">Anish Mehta</keyword>, CEO, Cosmos-Maya talks to us about how things have been for the company since the lockdown, and what we can expect from their stable in the next few months to come.</li></ul>Since the nation went under a 21-days lockdown, lots of interesting consumer behavior trends have been emerging across the spectrum. With more and more people staying at home, TV and OTT viewership has gone up substantially. Also, with schools closed too, children are consuming more content. According to data shared by television monitoring agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), the kids’ genre witnessed a 39% growth in the second week of the lockdown. As a genre, kids’ channels, along with movies and news, grew much more than GEC, across dayparts in prime time. It is then obvious that most of the children’s channels are doing all in their might to come up with fresh content, to keep their audiences engaged and content, which is where animation companies like <keyword id="3740561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cosmos-maya">Cosmos Maya</keyword> play a critical role. For the uninitiated, Cosmos Maya has been the brains behind some of the most popular animation shows on channels including <keyword id="16123" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nickelodeon">Nickelodeon</keyword>, Disney and <keyword id="193300" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cartoon-Network">Cartoon Network</keyword>. Some of the most popular shows from its stable are Eena Meena Deeka, Tik Tak Tail and Motu Patlu. A recent chat with Anish Mehta, CEO, Cosmos-Maya took us behind the scenes of how Cosmos Maya has been working under the lockdown and what are a few of the things that we can look forward to in the months to come. Edited excerpts: Q) Considering most of the animation work happens inside studios, in what way has your business been impacted due to the current crisis? The management had formulated Work From Home (WFH) plans a few days before the lockdown was announced. So, the transition to WFH setups was relatively seamless for us. It is too early to assess the crisis’ impact on business. Yes, there are reports of a slowdown and the entire economic landscape of the country being affected. That, no doubt will slow things down if the crisis is prolonged. We are fortunate that our line of work provides respite in times like this. While there are economic implications to every decision, the safety our people is of utmost importance and thus Cosmos-Maya had already taken progressive measures in that direction. Q) Has there been a surge in the demand for kids content, considering kids are at home and consumption of kids channels has gone up? There has been a substantial surge in consumption of kids’ content. This has led to a lot of inquiries from buyers. Q) What kind of content are you currently working on? Has the lockdown brought about any change in the kind of content you are creating? Since 18 of our IPs are on air currently, most of them are ongoing projects with new seasons being commissioned every now and then, these take the largest share in the production pie. Out of these, ‘Motu Patlu’ and ‘Selfie With Bajrangi’ are network toppers for Nickelodeon and Disney respectively. In fact, ‘Selfie with Bajrangi’ is the first Indian kids’ animated show to feature on a major GEC via Star Plus. Two of our projects, ‘Lambuji Tinguji’ and ‘Titoo’ were recently greenlit by Cartoon network and Pogo. Production is also on for ‘Dogtanian and Three Muskehounds’, which marks Cosmos-Maya’s entry into the International Feature Film Business. The current crisis will find its way into episodic storylines. It will be our endeavor to simplify the information reaching out to kids so that it is easier for them to decode it. Q) What kind of growth has some of the content created by Cosmos-Maya witnessed in the past few weeks. Can you share some figures? Millions of children worldwide are finding solace in WowKidz, Cosmos-Maya’s YouTube platform during this lockdown since the platform’s programming is kept running from home. As responsible content creators and distributors, we endeavor to put a smile on anxious faces and spread the message of goodness. There has been a substantial growth in WowKidz subscribers and views in the last couple of weeks. The platform sees daily views in excess of 50 million and currently has a total of 40 million subscribers. Q) What lies ahead for the animation industry if the lockdown is extended? Cosmos-Maya is already honing its WFH capabilities. Our ever-evolving business model is already adapting to the changes. If the crisis is prolonged, it will be imperative for all studios to rise up to the challenge. Q) Will the lockdown, and therefore the surge in demand for kids content, lead to growth for the industry as well as Cosmos-Maya? The lockdown has greatly impacted the entire Media landscape. Kids’ media has also been majorly impacted. TV ratings and views on OTTs and VOD platforms for kids’ content have increased substantially. Children from the age group of 4-11 have the most time at their disposal and the smartphone and TV assuming the role of the ‘Digital Nanny’ is coming in handy for parents since children switch between YouTube and cartoons to pass their time and stay happy and entertained. However, it must be reiterated that Advertising revenues have been hit. It is too early to assess the crisis’ impact on business. Q) Like a lot of popular shows are making a comeback, is there a demand for old shows that have performed well in the past? A lot of older shows are being re-telecast. The ratings have not yet come in for these, so we need to wait and see whether these are performing in today’s day and age. However, older comedy shows, when re-telecast, have known to do well because of the nostalgia factor. Now with entire families at home during the lockdown, it is highly probable that older shows and re-runs of previously aired episodes of currently running comedy shows will do well. On this front, there will soon be a similar announcement from our end. Stay tuned.

MTV’s Splitsvilla features a group of men and women who participate in a series of tasks to find true love. It is on the same lines as Australia’s Love Island. Whether he found love or not is not known but Alugh found his pot of gold. Even as his TV career took off, yet another source of money came from brands that he endorses to his many followers. He recently promoted a range of male grooming products StudioX got 5,759 views. His average monthly average views ranges between 25000- 30,000. Gaurav has been a social media influencer since five years. He endorses fashion and lifestyle brands along with his own acting projects. The journey started in 2016 when he left his job as a marketing consultant in Delhi for a TV show called Roadies. He did not win the title but made it to the grand finale. But his marketing background gave him an idea about how to put his fame to good use. “My Instagram followers who were about 500, skyrocketed to over 55k as soon as I appeared on Roadies. Guess appearing on television adds a lot of followers. People want to follow you and know everything about your life. So I thought why not monetise it. I started endorsing brands,” he told Business Insider India. In 2016 he promoted several brands. But fame is fickle. After he left the show, thousands of followers quit him too. “Everybody wants to follow you as long as you are on a reality show. But as soon as the show wraps up the engagement number shrinks,” Alugh said. Gaurav hired a marketing agency One Impression later which helped streamline his income. He also shot back to fame again when he participated in Splitsvilla XI. When he was on the show—- his follower base increased to 100k. Currently, Gaurav promotes fashion and lifestyle brands including Bata India, Paresh Lamba Signatures, U Tropicana Resort Alibaug, and Swatch India. Social media influencing has turned is the lucrative for influencers, brands and way to earn big money for influencers, marketing agencies and brands alike. The global influencer marketing is expected to hit $20 billion by 2020, with India accounting to about $75 -100 million. But for an influencer, it is not as easy as clicking and posting. “When someone starts influencing digitally, they may not make any money but you will have to invest a lot more time and dedication towards what you are giving to your audience. But I know many Instagram influencers who are not able to differentiate between virtual and real life. They suffer from mental illness and depression when they lose follower,” Alugh told Business Insider India. A marketing consultant turned reality show star is now minting money on the internet

Outgoing US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> on Monday issued an executive order to lift travel restrictions on European countries and Brazil which his administration had imposed in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Travel restrictions on several other countries including China and Iran remain in place. Trump said that European Union, Britain, Ireland and Brazil will cooperate with the US in the implementation of CDC's January 12, 2021, order and that tests administered there will yield accurate results. However, the same cannot be said of China and Iran. A sharp rebound in RIL along with buying interest in HDFC Bank after strong 3Q numbers offered support to benchmark Nifty index," he said. The top three drivers for consumer satisfaction in the above mentioned price segment include <keyword id="1507072" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-camera">smartphone camera</keyword> (86%), performance (81%) and battery life (77%). According to a CMR 'Insights On the Go Survey', consumers in this price segment seek the best specs and <keyword id="10611947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-quality">highest quality</keyword>. They seek to invest in the future by getting 5G capable phones (72 per cent), with enhanced capabilities for camera (66 per cent), and wireless charging (61 per cent). Realme scored the highest (79 out of 100) followed by Samsung (77 out of 100) among current smartphone users in the segment. Among the smartphone users in ₹15,000-₹20,000 seeking to upgrade, Realme is the most preferred brand (18%) followed by Samsung (16%). Realme X3 and Samsung Galaxy A51 emerged as the most popular devices in their respective price segments. "In the ₹20,000-₹30,000 price segment, smartphone brand loyalty is not absolute. Consumers seek best-in-class capabilities across the board," said Amit Sharma, Manager- Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR. "Samsung's horizontal play across price points makes it a key consideration for consumers. Realme consumers are most satisfied, and the brand scores among youth for its design aesthetics and performance," Sharma added. Samsung consumers rate the brand high for its value for money (76%) and performance (82%). Prior to selecting Samsung, consumers explored OPPO (41%) and <keyword id="874458" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> (35%). "Realme has the maximum net promoter score (48%) followed by OnePlus (45%) and Samsung (43%). "This translates into the fact that Realme users are not only most satisfied, but they tend to be more stronger advocates of the brand among peers, friends and family," the findings showed. Vivo users are satisfied with their camera (87%), battery life (72%) and features (72%). Vivo users explored Samsung (47%) and OPPO (38%), prior to purchasing a Vivo device. "The pandemic reinforced the importance of the smartphone as a key driver for consumer lives. Sridhar Ramachandran, a tax partner at Grant Thornton Bharat, told Business Insider this route would help Tesla with tax benefits related to capital gains and dividend payments. “The India Dutch treaty has been seen as a good treaty for capital gains exemption for lower withholding tax on dividend and lower withholding tax on interest,” he said. Tesla’s choice came as an exception to the general trend that has been seen over the past decade by other foreign companies investing in India. Unlike MG Motors, which invested from its home country China, and Kia Motors, that made investments from South Korea — Tesla chose to go with its Dutch subsidiary and not invest through its home jurisdiction in California. As per the treaty, the sale of unlisted shares of an Indian company is taxable only under very limited circumstances in India. For example, shares derive value from the possession of real estate other than what is used for business. India amended a similar treaty with Mauritius and Singapore in 2016 and made the capital gains tax rates applicable from April 2019 on the sale of Indian companies’ shares by investors. “I guess the Netherlands has continued to be stable from the capital gain perspective,” Ramachandran added. Lower dividend taxes and withholding taxes Ramachandran also highlighted that the Dutch domestic laws provide a fair bit of advantage from a tax planning perspective. The companies gain an edge in the rates for dividend taxes and withholding taxes if they choose to invest via the Netherlands. “Netherlands has a strong treaty network (including a good treaty with the USA) and its domestic law also favours multinational corporations. The India Netherlands treaty also provides for a lower withholding tax rate on dividends that a Dutch company may receive from an Indian company,” he added. According to Kotak Securities, the extensive expansion plans of the Railways in the future will involve significant financing, and the company’s operations, as a primary financing source for the Indian Railways, will increase massively. In fiscal 2020, it financed ₹713.92 billion, accounting for 48.22% of the actual capital expenditure of the Indian Railways.
