<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Lenovo-replaces-head-of-smartphone-division-as-sales-slump-in-China/articleshow/47514050.cms">Lenovo</a>, the Chinese multinational computer technology company announced at a city event on Tuesday that it has started local manufacturing of <keyword id="6354775" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smartphones">smartphones</keyword> in Chennai, in keeping with the government’s ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Modi-to-call-on-Samsung-LG-to-Make-in-India/articleshow/47262269.cms">Make in India’</a> campaign.<br />
<br /> Titled ‘Make more in India,’ <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword> which had acquired <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword> Mobility last year, launched the 40,000 sq. feet manufacturing facility located in Sriperambudur, Chennai. This plant is set to roll out two successful models of 4G smartphones- The Moto E and the Lenovo K3 Note.<br />

Talking about what triggered the idea of local manufacturing of smartphones, Chen Xudong, President MBG group, Lenovo and Chairman, Motorola Mobility Operating Board, said, “According to IDC, India is the third largest smartphone market in the world, and we are excited to expand our presence in the country at a time like this. Lenovo’s investment in the new manufacturing plant represents the potential we see in the Indian market and we hope to tap into the country’s competent talent pool to develop cutting-edge products for our customers.”<br />

<br /> The <keyword id="134346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chennai-plant">Chennai plant</keyword> has already started rolling out <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-Cheapest-MOTO-E-Is-Not-Bad-At-All-Review/articleshow/36288300.cms">Moto E</a> phones, while the K3 note is set to follow soon. Amar Babu, COO Lenovo, Asia Pacific and Chairman, Lenovo India claimed that the first batch of shipment has infact reached their sales partners.<br />
<br />
The plant, for which Lenovo has entered into a contract agreement with one of its global partner, Flextronics, will employ 1500 employees’ for manufacturing lines, quality assurance, product testing etc. These employees also have the task of helping the company generate 6 million units for the Indian market in this financial year.<br />
<br />
The Chennai plant also holds the distinction of being the only plant outside India to manufacture products of both brands.<br />
<br />
Sudhin Mathur, Director of Smart Phone Business mentioned that their Chennai plant could not be termed as just an assembly unit as it was 'somewhere in the middle'.<br />
<br />
Additionally, the company also has plans to locally source 30% of the components required in the manufacturing process and are optimistic that it will be ‘a matter of months’ before they achieve that target with the support of its partner. “We are also in talks with the government to improve availability of components locally to heighten the total value of devices.”<br />
<br />
Elaborating on the company’s future plans, Amar Babu said that the company looks forward to generating 12-14 million units from the Chennai plant, next year and the focus at the moment is on stabilizing the process of ramping up. “We haven’t launched SmartTV in India, but launching the smartwatch is a possibility in the near future,” he added.<br />
<br />
Incidentally, this is not Lenovo’s first foray into manufacturing in India. The company boasts of a PC- manufacturing plant in Pondichery since 2005 and is looking to set in stone their integration with Motorola through this plant.<br />

“Lenovo and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Motorolas-Second-Innings-In-India-Will-It-Work/articleshow/28338123.cms">Motorola</a> will have separate manufacturing lines at the facility but it should not be forgotten that they both belong to one company.” Amar Babu explicitly stated.<br />

Lenovo also said that they have grown 330 percent in India from last year, according to IDC estimates and stated that they plan to make future investments in the country.<br />

The event was also attended by Ajay Kumar, Additional Secretary, Department of IT and Electronics and Debjani Ghosh, President of Manufactures Association for Information Technology (MAIT).<br />

<p>This map showing the locations of 280 million individual posts on Twitter shows a depressing divide in America: Tweets coming from Manhattan tend to come from iPhones. Tweets coming from Newark, N.J., tend to come from Android phones.</p>
<p>If you live in the New York metro area, you don't need to be told that Manhattan is where the region's rich people live, and the poor live in Newark. <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/business/moneybox/2014/01/new_york_city_census_data_manhattan_and_brooklyn_are_much_poorer_than_you.html">Manhattan's median income is $67,000</a> a year. <a href="http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/34/3451000.html">Newark's is $17,000, </a>according to U.S. Census data.</p>
<p>The rich, it seems, use iPhones while the poor tweet from Androids.</p>
<p>The map was created by <a href="https://www.mapbox.com/labs/twitter-gnip/brands/#11/40.7896/-74.0712">Mapbox, which markets beautiful mapping software</a>. You can use it to zero in on your ZIP code and see how your neighborhood breaks down.</p>
<p>Even within Manhattan, the iPhone / Android divide picks out the wealthier neighborhoods from the poorer ones. Here is the split along the border of the Village (think brownstones and chic little designer stores) and Chinatown and the Lower East side (noodle joints and bodegas, plus a large public housing complex):</p>

<p>The maps illustrate a debate among app developers and mobile tech execs about the apparent socio-economic divide between users of the two largest mobile platforms in the world, Apple's iOS and Google's Android.</p>
<p>Here is an even more dramatic one. Everyone knows that the Miami Beach area of Florida is where the rich go to play. But check out what happens near the airport, where there are a couple of trailer parks:</p>

<p>Cennydd Bowles, a U.K.-based design lead at Twitter, raised the issue recently in a thoughtful article on Medium titled, "<a href="https://medium.com/p/a649db399f42">Why don't designers take Android seriously?</a>" He wanted to know why app developers don't like working for Android: "It's likely that Android will reach a larger proportion of humanity than any comparable technology, if it hasn't already."</p>
<p>Android has about an 80% market share in some areas of the world. "Android is the dominant platform of the next decade. Why aren't designers paying it more attention?" Bowles asked.</p>
<p>To make his point, he noted that WhatsApp's 450 million users are mostly on Android. WhatsApp helps people save money via bypassing a phone user's data plan in favor of free Wi-Fi. With audiences of that size, it was odd to him that app developers still regarded Android as an also-ran. He got a bunch of responses from his colleagues and readers:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The ... replies were mostly variations on the theme that Android users don't pay for apps, they don't have data plans, you can't monetize them easily, and designers are all iPhone users and don't really understand Android users.</p>
<h3>A socio-economic split on class lines, in favor of iPhone over Android.</h3>
<p>Note the recurring theme: Android users are less lucrative than iPhone users, and designers are iPhone users. It's a socio-economic split on class lines, in favor of iPhone over Android.</p>
<p>Mobile traffic data to e-commerce sites bears this out. Every quarter, a mobile market research company called <a href="http://monetate.com/">Monetate publishes data on mobile shoppers</a> and how much they spend online. On almost every metric, Apple users come out ahead as spenders. Here's the data for Q4 2013:</p>

<p>Only on phones do Android users spend more, but if you look at the dominant share of iPad as a shopping device and how much iPad users spend - $155 on 87% of visits - it's almost as if Apple users do their shopping on iPad and only use their phones for the loose-change stuff:</p>

<p>That "loose change," unfortunately, is roughly the most that Android users spend, on average.</p>
<p>This finding has been repeated - broadly - by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-android-market-share-ecommerce-2014-1#ixzz2rEi9FSYS">IBM, which monitors holiday shopping on mobile devices</a>. From Black Friday through Christmas Day,  iOS users spent $93.94 per order, nearly twice that of Android users, who spent just $48.10.</p>
<p>Simon Khalaf, CEO of Flurry, one of the larger mobile advertising platforms, recently told Business Insider the same thing: "We have seen and published reports that an Android user is worth one-quarter of an iOS user, but that is based on virtual goods sales (mainly games). The IBM data seems to suggest that this is almost the same ratio for sales of physical goods (m-commerce)."</p>
<p>The economic split between Apple and Android isn't surprising, given that Apple generally demands $600 to $700 for an iPhone, and rarely tolerates discount pricing of its newest models. The chart above shows how consistent iPhone pricing is over time.</p>

<p>With Android, however, all the talk at the recent Mobile World Conference in Barcelona - a huge mobile industry confab - was about the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/its-a-race-to-the-bottom-2014-2">Chinese Android companies marketing smartphones for just $35</a>.</p>
<p>In the U.K., <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/apr/01/moto-g-boosts-motorola-mobile-smartphone-sales">Google's Moto G budget Android smartphone grabbed 6% of the market</a> in just three months simply because a high-quality phone for a low price appealed to poor men. The Guardian reported:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says that the Moto G was particularly popular with men aged 16-24 in "lower income" groups: 83% of buyers were male, and 40% have annual earnings of below £20,000.</p>
<h3>What's happening in China?</h3>
<p>Apple has recently started paying attention to the Chinese market, hoping to sell more phones there. So Chinese consumers may change their tastes. But until recently, Android dominated much of Asia. This chart from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-chart-explains-why-apple-ceo-tim-cook-is-obsessed-with-china-2014-1">Distimo <em>appears</em> to show that sales on Apple vs. Android</a> devices are split evenly, by geography. But ...</p>

<p>Note that in Asia and China particularly, Android simply dominates, especially when you factor in the Chinese "Wandoujia" app store for Android. (Google Play has less traction there.) Basically, while Apple and Android split the population in the West in terms of e-commerce, most of Asia is simply Android territory. <h3>There may be signs this is changing.</h3>
<p>As the sheer size of the Android audience grows, businesses are paying more attention to it, and some Android users are behaving more like iPhone users. This chart shows that monetization of Android apps by developers is catching up to the iPhone, but Android still has a long way to go:</p>

<p><a href="https://medium.com/p/a649db399f42">Bowles, the Twitter designer, wrote</a> that he hopes the app development community will wake up and stop ignoring the largest mobile platform on earth:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I do hope, given tech's rhetoric about changing the world and disrupting outdated hierarchies, that we don't really think only those with revenue potential are worth our attention. A designer has a duty to be empathetic; to understand and embrace people not like him/herself. A group owning different devices to the design elite is not a valid reason to neglect their needs.</p>

These Maps Show That Android Is For Poor People

<p>One of the best things about Android phones is that you have options. However, many Android phones these days seem to have similar specifications and it can be difficult to actually figure out which one is best for you.</p><p>To remedy this conundrum, Google has released a nifty new website that helps you decide which Android phone you should get if you're up for an upgrade or simply looking around.</p><p>It's called <a href="https://www.android.com/phones/whichphone/#/">Android Phone Picker</a> and you chose which criteria matters most to you, like watching videos, making calls, listening to music, or taking photos.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>Then you choose the degree in which you do these things on your phone. With photos, for example, you tell the Android Picker tool that you take either five, 20, or upwards of 40 photos per day.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>The tool then wants to refine that criteria a little more by asking what's important to you. Taking the photos example again, it'll ask if you like taking quick high quality photos or if you primarily take selfies. It's basically asking if you use the rear or front-facing camera more often, as some phones features high-resolution front-facing cameras specifically for taking selfies.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>You need to select at least three different criteria and which carrier you're on before the tool can pick the right Android phone for you.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>It'll then list the phones you might like according to your preferences and how you use your phone. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>It'll also show you why the Android Phone Picker tool suggested these phones for you. The phones may have similar screen sizes and internal hardware, but each have different built-in differentiating features that you might like. For example, if you want your music to sound great from your phone, the HTC One (M9)'s sound-enhancing BoomSound feature could set it apart from the rest.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>More often than not, and even if you pick the mose basic criteria (like a few calls, texts, and emails per day), it'll suggest the top three premium $650+ flagship Android phones on the market at the moment, like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s6-review-2015-4">Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/htc-one-m9-review-2015-3">HTC One M9</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lg-g4-specs-photos-release-date-revealed-2015-4">LG G4</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nexus-6-review-photos-price-2014-11">Nexus 6</a>.</p><p>That's understandable because Google wants you to experience the best that Android phone makers have to offer. And also, these phones are likely to do the best job with the tasks you selected.</p><p>If you have a particular preference for a feature that some flagships don't necessarily have, like taking more selfies with your front-facing camera rather than using the rear-facing camera, it'll suggest phones that have high-resolution front-facing cameras like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/htc-desire-eye-photos-specs-and-features-2014-10">HTC Desire EYE</a>.</p><p>One thing that seems curious is the Android Phone Picker doesn't take pricing into consideration, even though there are countless inexpensive and decent mid-range and entry-level Android phones. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Good Morning!   US Futures are meandering along what many hope is the "Floor", the 100dma in the E-minis, as they gain 30bp.   Nasdaq Futures fare better on the back of Earnings - adding 40bp, and remain almost 3% above their 100dma.  Bear markets close higher than where they opened.  Thus far in 2014, the SPX has closed below our opening 12 times, and above 7.  Euro markets are slightly red, with the DAX off 30bp (had been off 1%), and some periphery countries nearing unchanged.   Over in Asia, The Nikkei was hit for 2.5% on a surging Yen and their Retail Sales print light ahead of heavy data tonight, while China retreated nearly 1% as their PMI printed in contraction, a first in 6 months.  Volume is weak in Europe (Selling exhaustion?) and Asia (Some exchanges closed for Holiday) - but of the 26 Global sectors moving overnight, only German Industrials and EU banks are in the green.  Banks, Property and Materials stocks the biggest losers.    Single Stock movers include FB +13% (#s), FLEX +10% (#s), TWTR +6% (FB #s), GOOG + 3% (Moto Sale).  Losers include CTXS -8% (Multiple d/gs), MOS -1% (POT #s).   We have over 10% of the S&amp;P reporting today.   COP, V, MMM, UPS, XOM, PHM among those this AM, while we see GOOG, AMZN, BRCM tonight.</span><br /><br /><span>Looking at the EM angst - we have some stability in the countries making headlines this week - with the Brazilian Real jumping against the Dollar and the Rand trending better as well - while Turkey's Lira meanders around unchanged, after testing yesterday's lows in the overnight.   Seems the sharks have moved on (for the moment) to Hungary, where their Forint is getting smacked hard this AM (HUFUSD the cross).</span><br /><br /><span>The US 10YY is slightly higher this AM, but has been rejected from 2.7% several times in the overnight.   The strong bid in Bonds coming from Safety, Pension rotation, Asian Demand on Yield Differential, and positioning from heavy shorts.  We do have heavy supply today - 2 auctions - $35B in 5's at </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_478153719"><span class="aQJ">11:30</span></span><span>, and $29B in 7's at 1.   The DXY is higher, making some gains against € and Yen (Nikkei futures unch tho) - causing a headwind for commodities.   All eyes remain on the Natty complex, which surged 10% yesterday in a squeeze on expiry of the current contract - as players tried to lock in prices for February with another "Polar Vortex" approaching - the reversal of that stress buying has the March future off 4% early ahead of the Inventory data at </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_478153720"><span class="aQJ">10:30</span></span><span>.   Both WTI and Brent have a bid, but we are seeing weakness in Metals - primarily industrials, as that China PMI number weighs.    Aside from the aforementioned, we get GDP and weekly claims data at </span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_478153721"><span class="aQJ">8:30</span></span><span>, Pending Home sales for Dec at 10, a small POMO at 11.</span></p>
