However, per their estimates, sales this year might be down by 5% compared to last year. New Delhi [India], May 22 (ANI): Benefiting from strong sales, organised gold jewellery retailers are set to clock 17-19 per cent <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword> in the current financial year 2024-25, according to <keyword id="19898320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Crisil" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Crisil" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Crisil">Crisil</keyword>. The rating agency asserted that the projected revenue would be driven by higher realisations stemming from elevated <keyword id="19910265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-prices" source="keywords">gold prices</keyword>, while volume remains steady. Gold, considered a safe haven asset for investment, has been in demand for considerable period of time, with its prices rallying to hit record highs every now and then. Geopolitical conflict in the West Asia that stretched for long now, buying by several central banks including RBI, physical demand, have altogether pushed gold prices towards northwards. Retailers are likely to step up marketing and promotional campaigns this fiscal to combat the moderation in demand amid rising gold prices, Crisil said on Wednesday. Hence, operating profitability may marginally moderate 20-40 basis points (100 basis points is equal to 1 percentage point) year-on-year to 7.7-7.9 per cent. "Working capital requirements may rise, too, resulting from increased inventory due to a substantial rise in gold prices and new stores additions. That said, credit profiles should remain stable," the rating agency noted. The organised gold sector accounts for slightly more than a third of the market, with the highly fragmented unorganised sector making up the rest. Domestic gold price increased 15 per cent during fiscal 2024 and reached Rs 67,000 per 10 gm as on end of March 2024. Now, they are trading at over Rs 74,000. Gold kept its shine as one of the safer investment options seen by various central banks across the world as well as end consumers amid geopolitical uncertainties. Gold is a scarce commodity, and any mismatch in demand-supply conditions may invariably trigger sharp price rise. Moreover, Crisil believes <keyword id="21263075" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="organised-retailers" source="keywords">organised retailers</keyword> will continue to gain market share at the expense of the unorganised ones, supported by changing consumer preferences and store expansion into Tier 1 and 2 cities and beyond. Himank Sharma, Director, CRISIL Ratings, "Stronger cash generation, due to healthy revenue growth and adequate profitability, will keep credit profiles of organised gold jewellery retailers stable, despite an expected rise in working capital borrowings." In the same period last year, it reported a loss of ₹51 crore. Its consolidated revenues stood at ₹3,333 crore almost doubling from ₹1,637 crore reported in the same quarter last year. “The recently concluded quarter has been a positive one for Kalyan Jewellers, having witnessed robust momentum in both footfalls and revenue across India and Middle East markets. Revenue momentum in the current quarter has remained encouraging, thus far, and we are keenly looking forward to the upcoming <keyword id="36208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season" source="Orion">festive season</keyword>,” said Ramesh Kalyanaraman, ED, Kalyan Jewellers India. In the Middle East, which contributes around 17% to its overall business, the jewellers’ total revenue from operations went up by 69% to ₹574 crore in Q1 as against ₹340 crore last year. The jewellers’ stock surged by 5.87% in today’s trade, as per NSE. Increasing its footprint Kalyan Jewellers, which launched its first franchised showroom in Q1, aims to increase its retail footprint in India by another 8%, before Diwali this year. This new line up is planned in the non-South markets. It will also focus on scaling up operations within micro markets of tier-1 cities like Delhi and Mumbai, while aggressively expanding its presence in tier-2 and tier-3 markets. “We have built a meaningful pipeline of additional franchise showrooms on the back of very encouraging responses from potential franchise partners, and we are on track with our expansion plans for the current financial year. We believe the successful launch of the first set of franchised showrooms will give us the confidence to further enhance the pace of expansion through this significantly more capital efficient and return accretive path,” said Kalyanaraman. As of June 30, 2022, Kalyan Jewellers' store network across India and the Middle East stood at 158.

After gold prices hit a new-high in December, she was thrilled to hear that the necklace she purchased eight years back is now worth twice what she paid for. “I thought of exchanging it for another set,” she said. But her plans were thwarted as she learnt that she missed the festive-period discount season. As per reports, there has been a surge in people recycling old gold like her, during the ongoing wedding season. Prices are of no consequence as exchanging old gold for new jewellery is a zero-sum game, say experts. “There is no gain to be made when people recycle gold. In fact, it’s a bad idea to exchange when prices are high as no jeweller will give any offers when there is a rush,” Jateen Trivedi, VP and research analyst at LKP Securities tells Business Insider India. Book profits or hold? India is sitting on physical gold holdings which are estimated anywhere between 25,000 to 27000 tonnes. It’s all worth a lot more after the recent spike, but little can be realized from it, as most of it is in the form of jewellery — which is not sold unless there is a specific need or an emergency. “Traditionally, Indians have been advised to safeguard their future by saving or investing in gold. While considering physical gold, it is usually not purchased for investment purposes so they could hold it for their respective purpose,” says Rahul Kalantri, VP Commodities , Mehta Equities. Agrees Trivedi,“There is no woman in India who would sell her jewellery no matter what the prices are or how much profits there are in it unless there is a financial crunch or need for family. The amount of physical gold in the form of bars which is held for trading purposes can be sold to book profits, but that percentage is very low.” It’s very unlikely that even traders would liquidate their holdings, since analysts expect gold to see another spike once the US Fed goes in for rate cuts to support growth. “We advise as much as 10-15% of the portfolio to be in gold holdings. Any incremental holdings can be sold to book profits as we look at gold holding strategically and not tactically. If prices run up a lot, they can be sold to book profits but prospects for 2024 look good, so they shouldn’t miss out on that,” says Ghazal Jain, fund manager of alternative investments at Quantum AMC. Should you buy more? Most experts expect some short-term correction from the all-time high to the tune of 5-7% in the next few months – offering a brief but decisive entry point. “After the first quarter of 2024, we might see another positive cycle after interest rate cuts,” says Trivedi. Jain also says that the outlook is positive even if there could be some volatility in the next few months. “We suggest individuals could consider shifting to Sovereign Gold Bonds, offering the dual advantage of gold investment and earning interest over time,” says Kalantri. There is another factor at play that can offer long-term support to prices is the aggressive central bank purchases of gold. Apart from the yellow metal’s safe haven status, de-dollarization is also adding to its lustre. “One of the main drivers of gold demand is China, India, Russia, and Turkey, which buy record amounts of gold to protect their economy from dollar fluctuations and increase their financial independence,” says a report by Kedia Advisory. China, which is the biggest global buyer of oil, has been in talks with Saudi Arabia to sell them oil in yuan since 2022. “It is possible that the Saudis may have asked for the yuan to be backed by gold, to bolster its lack of free convertibility. This could explain why the Chinese central bank has been buying more and more gold each year,” explains Jamal Mecklai, CEO of Mecklai Financial in his note. China has already announced its goal of raising gold holdings to 5%, and its share at the end of Q2 2023 is at 3.84%. “The possibility that China may see fit to push the share of its gold holdings even higher than 5%, we may well be seeing just the start of a real bull market in gold,” adds Mecklai. Dropping tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST at $120 for a pack of 12."The post itself attracted comments from users asking if it was a belated April Fool's joke or a comedic take worthy of a spot on "Saturday Night Live." Other comments on the post expressed outrage at the idea of paying $120 for a set of 12 diapers, with one Instagram user noting that it would be essentially "$120 for two days worth of bathroom blowouts." As the auspicious months arrive, the real estate sector is upbeat with new launches and more, but the shadow of the monsoons lingers over automobile dealers and jewellers. This season, Indians are not shying away from high-profile purchases this festive season as the real estate sector has reported healthy inquiries – thanks to the high consumer sentiment due to heightened economic activity. “As we approach the festive season, we are already witnessing a surge in inquiries and we are expecting around 20% growth compared to last year’s festive season. This naturally offers a context for consumers to go in for their dream homes as the overall climate is geared towards sustained demand,” said Ramani Sastri, chairman &amp; MD of Sterling Developers. The demand for new homes has been growing and has hit an all-time high, and realtors expect a windfall this season, aided by growth in new launches especially in the mid and luxury categories. Rising homeownership amongst millennials, aided by the higher disposable income and willingness to upgrade to larger, luxurious spaces equipped with better amenities. “Developers are optimistic about the desire for homeownership and anticipate that with attractive schemes and offers, the uptake for homes across cities will be healthy. Further, the unchanged repo rates and the appraisal cycle that coincides with the festive season, will provide a much-needed boost to the residential sales figures in the coming months,” said Kanika Gupta Shori, founder and COO, Square Yards. Consumer goods are also expected to see traction this season, thanks to the underlying need to improve living standards combined with the surge in the need for comfort in households. “People are upgrading to a more premium lifestyle and our products, with their distinct combination of technology, ultra-modern look and cutting-edge features, will continue to find traction. The focus on launching new products, coupled with good deals and enhanced distribution, especially in the tier-2 and tier-3 cities, should help brands during the festive season ahead,” said Parag Kulkarni, senior VP-international and president, A O Smith India, who are known for their water heaters and purifiers. Better than last year The festive mood is also high for other purchases like clothes, luxury goods and more. A survey by global technology company The Trade Desk says that 70% of Indians are ready to spend more this Diwali – that’s a 35% higher than last year. The year of 2022 was one of the first festival seasons which was not masked by fear of Covid-19 in the last few years. This year, sales are expected to be better. “With the broader economy coming back to business-as-usual levels, this festive season is likely to catalyze online consumption demand,” said a report by Redseer. With regards to online shopping, the growth in gross merchandise value (GMV) of sales is expected to be 18-20% higher than what it was in the 2022 festival season – which saw a 10% growth. “The planned increase in consumer spend is led primarily by consumers’ bullish view that their financial situation has improved according to 53%, and consumers’ eagerness to celebrate a lot more this year as per 49%,” The Trade Desk says. A significant majority ie. 84% expressed interest in buying luxury goods and apparel, with 80% on gold, as per Trade Desk survey. Amongst those who plan to spend more, 68% are more likely to spend more on new clothes, the rest on food items, gifts for family and more. Within e-tailing, beauty and personal care products, home and general merchandise, fashion are expected to see high demand – with persistent premiumization. Auto and gold sales rely on rural demand for growth uptick After an upbeat August sales when sales of passenger vehicles and three-wheelers hit an all-time high, the outlook for auto sales too is upbeat. “Based on the performance of last month (August) , we are even more optimistic for demand to pick-up during the festive season, enabled by positive economic outlook and the revival of monsoon after a deficit in August,” said Vinod Aggarwal, the president of industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Two-wheeler sales, however, remained dull due to subdued rural demand on account of insufficient rainfall that could temper sales growth going ahead, as per experts. Consumer demand in this segment has remained ‘ambivalent’ according to yet another industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA). The monsoons have been in a deficit for most of the season, while a pick-up is expected in September. Without that pick-up, combined with low reservoir levels can have both direct and indirect effect on consumption both in rural and urban areas. Low sowing across two cropping seasons can have a devastating effect on inflation — driving down consumer sentiment across auto and other sectors. “After a prolonged period of stagnation, rural demand is showing signs of a positive resurgence. However, this recovery remains tenuous, contingent on the performance of the final phase of the monsoon season. Such developments would be particularly inopportune as they would coincide with the peak of India's festive season, notably Navratri and Deepawali, traditionally periods of heightened consumer activity,” said FADA. Jewellery sales too could be clouded by inflation, say experts, even as the yellow metal’s prices have been inching down on account of various macro economic factors. “With the start of the festive and wedding season, domestic gold demand is expected to gain impetus. However, higher inflation and weaker rural income on account of a less than ideal monsoon could potentially weigh on demand,” says Ghazal Jain, fund manager, alternative investments at Quantum Mutual Fund. Others, however, feel that consumers would be keen on addition to their physical old portfolio driven by the lower prices. Their prices have come down from a high of ₹61,750 per 10 gm in May to ₹59,000 per 10 gm currently — a healthy 20-25% drop from the recent surge. “Festive seasons have consistently witnessed a surge in physical gold demand, particularly in the realm of ornamental jewellery, as consumers seek the latest and trendiest designs. After a period of subdued festivities, the recent years have seen a resurgence in celebrations, rekindling the enthusiasm for gold,” said Jateen Trivedi, VP-research at LKP Securities. India switches on its shopping mode as festivals approach, sales set to jump 20%

<ul><li>FM increased customs duty on precious metals, articles of gold, silver and platinum and imitation jewellery in the Budget 2023-24.</li><li>Increase in import duty will raise prices of silver and <keyword id="571733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="silver-jewellery" source="Orion">silver jewellery</keyword>, which will impact demand and will also be detrimental to refineries, said CRISIL.</li><li>Import duty on articles made of precious metals increased to 25% from 22%.</li><li>Higher tax increases the cost for consumers as the country imports most of the bullion it consumes.</li></ul>Jewellery is set to get a lot more expensive, as customs duty on precious metals, articles of gold, silver and platinum and costume jewellery has been increased in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday. To make matters worse, basic customs duty has been hiked on articles made from gold bars. Apart from these, customs duty on electric kitchen chimneys, bicycles, toys, electric vehicles and cigarettes also increased. “I also propose to increase the import duty on silver dore, bars and articles to align them with that on gold and platinum,” said FM in a budget speech in Parliament. The centre did not raise import duty on gold as India had raised its import duty on gold in July 2022 to 12.5% from 7.5%. India meets most of its gold demand by importing the precious metal. The council said that the rise in import duty will increase prices of silver products in domestic markets. “The Union Finance Minister has also rationalised the import duty on silver by proposing to increase the import duty on silver dore, bars and articles to align them with that on gold and platinum. However, that will have a net effect of an increase of around 5% duty at import level for silver resulting in increase of price for silver products domestically,” added GJEPC. Lab grown diamonds to boost gold demand, say experts Meanwhile, the FM has reduced basic customs duty on seeds used in manufacturing of lab grown diamonds from 5% to Nil. The government sees lab grown diamonds as a technology and innovation driven emerging sector with high employment potential. These environmentally friendly diamonds have optically and chemically the same properties as natural diamonds. To encourage indigenous production of seeds and machines and to reduce import dependency in the long run, a research and development grant will be provided to one of the IITs for five years as announced in the budget. “The government’s innovation-led and technology-driven approach reflects in its investment towards research on lab-grown diamonds, which will generate new employment opportunities, while resonating with the export as well as urban Indian market,” said Ramesh Kalyanaraman, executive director at Kalyan Jewellers. The increase in import duty of silver is unlikely to impact significantly to Kalyan Jewellers. “The increase in the import duty of silver will not have a significant impact for us (Kalyan Jewellers), as our primary focus is on gold, diamond and other precious stone studded jewellery,” said Kalyanaraman. Further, lab grown diamond research funding is likely to benefit Vaibhav Global, manufacturer of fashion jewelry, says analysts at Goldman Sachs. Experts say that as lab grown diamonds become more popular and cheap it will eventually reduce demand for natural diamonds and improve demand for gold. “The government also gave a thrust to the lab-grown diamonds industry by reducing the basic customs duty on seeds used in their manufacturing. If lab-grown diamonds become more mainstream in the time to come, it could be positive for gold demand as demand for natural diamonds and thus their prices and appeal as an investment asset declines,” said Ghazal Jain, fund manager- alternative investments at Quantum AMC. Gold vs destination weddings “Bridal jewellery remains the dominant segment (50-55% market share by weight), despite rising domestic gold prices over the last decade and stiff competition from other luxury purchases, such as destination weddings and foreign holidays,” the report said. The love for gold has sustained the price rise too. The Rupee gold price has almost doubled since 2012. Even as this change made manufactures gradually shift towards lighter weight pieces, bridal jewellery has been relatively price inelastic, losing only around 5-10% market share in that time, as per field research quoted in the report. Going forward, it expects the demand from brides to remain robust. India is a young country with more than half the population below the age of 25 (and 65% under 35). Although there are no official figures for the number of weddings in India, an estimate is between 11-13 million per year, as per the council. “As the average age of marriage for women in India is 22, the number of weddings per annum looks set to remain strong. Daily wear jewellery like mangalsutras, earrings, chains etc. cover all the three segments of 22, 18 and 14-carat gold. However, 22-carat remains dominant with more than 80% of the market, and 18 and 14 carat combined account for a 15-17% share, with both having increased over the last decade. “The growth in lower caratages has been driven by three factors — the growing popularity of modern designs, the increase in rupee gold prices, and the growth of studded diamond jewellery,” says the World Gold Council. Studded diamond jewellery is predominantly sold in lower caratages like 14 and 18 because it is purchased for adornment rather than investment. Also, it is easier to make thinner and more delicate designs in harder alloys (with low carat gold), which again works better when the designer wants to set stones. Online &amp; export sales Indian <keyword id="6379337" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-jewellery" source="Orion">gold jewellery</keyword> also has a wide export market especially in countries where a lot of Indians reside. Over the last decade, nearly 90% of India’s jewellery exports have flowed to just five major markets, namely – the UAE, US, Hong Kong, Singapore and UK. While India does export to 146 countries, most of them are extremely small customers including Australia and Canada where a lot of Indian diaspora reside. “Trade bodies also need to help focus a spotlight on Indian craftsmanship, as a large part of Indian jewellery is hand-made – a skill that is appreciated globally,” the report says. Domestically, Indian jewellers are also exploring online and e-commerce options to drive sales. While it currently makes up for only 5-10% of jewellery sold, there is scope for growth, the council believes. “About a decade ago very few jewellery retailers focused on online sales, but today every large and mid-sized retailer has an online platform. Lastly, rising internet access and the advent of social media have allowed retailers to interact directly with their consumers in new ways to create brand awareness and drive sales,” the council says.
