The yellow metal rates saw another steep fall on Thursday, nosediving by Rs 1,000 to settle at Rs 70,650 per 10 grams, as per the All India Sarafa Association. After the duty cut, the yellow metal has declined Rs 5,000 per 10 grams or 7.1% in the past three sessions, since July 23 when it had fallen Rs 3,350 to end at Rs 72,300 per kg. Also, gold of 99.5% purity declined by Rs 1,000 to Rs 70,300 per 10 grams on Thursday. It had also lost ground by Rs 5,000 per 10 grams in the previous three sessions. On Thursday, silver rates also lost ground by Rs 3,500 per kg to Rs 84,000 per kg. In the past three sessions, the rates of the bright metal fell sharply by Rs 7,000 or 8.3% to Rs 84,000 per kg from Rs 91,000 per kg. Traders also said that a sharp correction in gold prices have revived the demand for jewellery among consumers as they flocked to jewellery outlets to take advantage of lower prices. "The reduction in basic custom duties have spurted the demand for jewellery in the domestic markets. Further, this will act as a sales booster for jewellers before the festive seasons, encouraging fresh buying by the consumers due to lower prices," PC Jeweller's Managing Director Balram Garg. Low gold prices will help domestic jewellers, particularly the organised ones, Garg said. According to MP Ahammed, Chairman, Malabar Group, the reduction has been a long-standing demand of traders in the gold sector, as it is expected to curb the rampant issue of gold smuggling, which poses a substantial threat to the Indian economy. "With the new rates, the duty on one kilogram of gold drops from Rs 9.82 lakh to Rs 3.93 lakh, making smuggling less attractive and more manageable. "This move will help dismantle the mafia chain involved in smuggling, leading to growth in the organised jewellery sector and increasing government revenue through GST and income tax," Ahammed said. Gretel allows companies to experiment and build with synthetic data. It's often filled with holes, inconsistencies, and biases from the processes used to capture, label, and leverage it. Synthetic data, on the other hand, allows us to fill those gaps, expand into areas that can't be captured in the wild, and intentionally design the data needed for specific applications.This level of control, with humans in the loop designing and refining the data, is crucial for pushing GenAI to new heights in a responsible, transparent, and secure manner. Synthetic data enables us to create datasets that are more comprehensive, balanced, and tailored to specific AI training needs, which leads to more accurate and reliable models.Great, are there any cons to synthetic data?Where synthetic data isn't very good is at the end of the day, if you have no data or clarity, you can't just have it create perfect data for you just, so you can experiment endlessly. So there is that scope that needs to be created.Ultimately, the other part of it is that synthetic data is very good at privacy if you have enough data. So, if you have only a few hundred records and want ultimate privacy, that comes at a huge cost to utility and accuracy because the data is very limited. So, when it comes to absolutely zero data and wanting a domain-specific task or having very limited data and wanting great privacy and accuracy, those are just incompatible with the approaches.What are the challenges of using public data?Public data presents several challenges, especially for specialized use cases in healthcare. Imagine trying to train an AI model for predicting COVID-19 outcomes using only publicly available case count data — you'd be missing crucial specifics like patient comorbidities, treatment protocols, and detailed clinical progression. This lack of comprehensive data severely limits the model's effectiveness and reliability.Adding to this challenge is the growing regulatory pressure against data collection practices. The Federal Trade Commission and other regulatory bodies are increasingly pushing back against web scraping and unauthorized data access — and rightly so. As AI becomes more powerful, the risk of re-identifying individuals from supposedly anonymized data is higher than ever.There's also the critical issue of data freshness across all industries. In today's fast-paced business environment, organizations need real-time data to remain competitive and train models that respond rapidly to changing market conditions, consumer behaviors, and emerging trends. Public domain data often lags by weeks, months, or even years, making it less valuable for cutting-edge AI applications that require up-to-the-minute insights.What do you think about companies like Meta and OpenAI that are willing to risk copyright lawsuits to get access to public data?The era of 'move fast and break things' is over, especially in the age of GenAI, where there's too much at stake to operate in such a flippant manner. We're advocating for an approach that leads with privacy. By prioritizing privacy from the start and embedding it into the customers' AI products and services — by design — you get faster, more sustainable, and defensible AI development. That's what our partners and, ultimately, their customers want. In this sense, privacy is a catalyst for GenAI innovation.This privacy-first approach is why partners like Google, AWS, EY, and Databricks work with us. They know that current methods are unsustainable and the future of AI will be driven by consensual, licensed data and thoughtful data-driven design, not by grasping at every bit of public data available. It's about creating a foundation of trust with your users and stakeholders, which is crucial for long-term success in AI development.Companies are scrambling to build models that unlock insights from proprietary data. Where does synthetic data fit into that equation?By some estimates, companies use only 1-10% of the data they collect. The rest is stored and siloed so that few can even access or experiment with it. This creates additional costs and data breach risks with no return value. Now, imagine if a company could safely open access to that remaining 90% of data. Cross-functional teams could collaborate and experiment with it to extract value without creating additional privacy or security risks. That level of knowledge sharing would be a huge boon for innovation.It's like we're moving from the parable of the blind men trying to describe an elephant to each other. Each only has a grasp and understanding of the part they can touch; the rest is a black box. Providing an entire organization with shared access to the 'crown jewels' and the opportunity to surface new insights from that data would be a paradigm shift in how companies and products are built. This is what people mean when they speak of 'democratizing' data.There are already ways of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/for-ai-models-good-enough-is-good-enough-2024-5">training smaller models</a> with a fraction of the data we may have once used that yield great results. Where are we headed regarding the amount of data we need for training generative AI?The idea of throwing the kitchen sink, in terms of data, to train a large language model is part of the problem and reflects the old 'move fast and break things' mentality. It's a land grab by companies with the means to do that, while AI regulations are still being hashed out.Now that the dust is settling, people are realizing that the future lies in smaller, more specialized models targeted to very specific tasks and orchestrating the actions of these models through an agentic, systematic approach. This specialized model approach provides more transparency and removes much of the 'black box' nature of AI models since you're designing the models from the ground up, piece by piece.It's also where regulation is heading. After all, how else will companies adhere to 'risk-based' regulations if we can't even quantify AI risks for each task we apply them to?This shift toward more focused, efficient models aligns perfectly with differential privacy and synthetic data. We can generate precisely the data needed for these narrow AI models, ensuring high performance without the ethical and practical issues of massive data collection. It's about smart, targeted development rather than the brute-force approach companies have taken.

Before I met my ex-husband, I didn't know anything about Iceland. But, after visiting four or five times and securing a job in digital marketing that didn't require me to speak Icelandic, I relocated from Brooklyn in 2016.I originally lived in the outskirts of Reykjavik, but moved downtown after me and my ex-husband split.Compared to Brooklyn, Reykjavik is nothing. But there's a ton happening here, which is funny considering how small it is. You could be bored, but that would be by choice.(Iceland has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statice.is/publications/news-archive/inhabitants/population-in-the-3rd-quarter-2023/">just under 400,000 residents</a>; Brooklyn has an estimated population of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/planning/download/pdf/planning-level/nyc-population/population-estimates/current-population-estimates-2022.pdf?r=a">nearly 2.6 million</a>.)In Reykjavik, looking out the window or walking down the street and seeing mountains and water in the distance makes you feel more connected to nature even though you're in an urban area.<div type="image" title="The sea near Reykjavik. Photo shows blue sea, stones on the beach, blue sky and mountains in the distance." height="2312" width="4624" msid="106597034" hostid="261"></div>But learning the language was challenging – I'm not going to sugarcoat it. I've cried some days feeling like a failure.<h2>Good luck finding your favorite brands</h2>Iceland is expensive, but it's cheaper than New York. Rents have been rising in Iceland, so it's much more common for people to own if they can – but it's very expensive to buy downtown.Medical care here is heavily subsidized – almost free – and all my experiences have been great.You could go bankrupt in the US from having a child. It's so much less expensive here. That astonishes me – it's already worked into the taxes we pay. Why can't that happen in the US?Food prices aren't terrible, but they've gone up recently. We don't grow much produce in Iceland and there's little variety in the stores. Your choice for cereal might be Cheerios, muesli, or oatmeal.In New York I was never that into Costco. But here I'm a fan. Some things are really cost-effective and there's a lot of variety. And it gives me a bit of New York and it's fun to just window-shop.(There is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/costco-iceland-photos-prices-membership-2023-7#icelands-first-and-only-costco-store-opened-in-2017-1">one Costco in Iceland</a>.)My friend recently went to London and said he couldn't wait for the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables there. When I go back to New York, I'm like a kid in a candy store. When I go into a Whole Foods, there are just so many varieties of apples and pears.I bring in things from the US that are hard to find. A lot of people do this, including Icelanders, because of the prices – when they go on vacation, they pack an extra suitcase to fill up. People visiting relatives in Iceland often bring supplies for them, too.Iceland is surprisingly great to live in as a vegan. Almost every restaurant has at least one vegan option.Driving is the standard in Iceland. Obviously there are plenty of places in the world where public transport doesn't run 24 hours, but I was coming from a place where it's always available.If you miss your night bus in Iceland, taxis are extraordinarily expensive. And I wouldn't recommend tourists try to travel around the country by public bus.<h2>I love Icelandic summers</h2>Adjusting to the daylight hours in Iceland took me some time, particularly the winters. It's dark when you're waking up and going to work and it's still dark until 11 a.m. – that's odd. And you leave work and it's dark again because the sun went down at 3 p.m..I used to be afraid of winter coming but now it just doesn't bother me at all. I do exercise – working out, walking, just getting outside – and make sure I have a project to work on, like my <a target="_blank" href="https://allthingsiceland.com/episodes/">podcast, "All Things Iceland."</a> That takes my brain off the idea that it's so dark.People create cozy environments by lighting candles and having lights in the windows, which makes everything brighter-looking. Many neighbors coordinate their lights, too. People have little tricks for your brain so you feel like it's not that bad.<div type="image" title="A colorfully-painted bakery in Reykjavik, lit up by fairy lights" height="2250" width="3000" msid="106597035" hostid="261"></div>In the summer I used to sleep in an eye mask to cope with the near-constant daylight. But I'm now fine with it and can go to sleep, no issues.And I don't find it annoying – I love it! There's so much sunlight it confuses my body because I want to be up all day, and that's probably the biggest downside. It's harder for me to know when I should relax, and I can exhaust myself. I could burn out from excitement.<h2>I've never been homesick</h2>I usually go back to the US once or twice a year. I've never been homesick. I've not had that feeling that I needed to be in New York. I enjoy being here very much and it feels like home.I've made friends through work, through my ex-husband, and through Facebook groups for foreign people living in Iceland. Facebook is the overlord of Iceland for communication.I feel leaps and bounds safer in Reykjavik. I don't feel alert in the way I would in New York. I've walked downtown in the middle of the night and never felt like this was a risky thing to do.<div type="image" title="A view of Reykjavik from above, showing rows of houses and streets with the sea in the distance" height="2312" width="4624" msid="106597036" hostid="261"></div>I don't have any regrets moving here. I think this was a great decision and I feel really secure and like I was meant to be here. It's bananas to say – I would've never assumed that.I've also learned to relax a lot more. It's very easy in New York to get caught in this rat race idea about needing to be overly productive and feeling like you're stressed all the time. And coming here, I shed a lot of that. I'm a lot less stressed.
