Indian government wants to stop milk prices from boiling over — investors in Heritage Foods, Parag Milk, and Hatsun Agro are watching closely

New Delhi, Mar 30 () Mother Dairy on Monday supplied around 250 tonnes of fruits and vegetables to its retail stores 'Safal' across Delhi-NCR to meet local demand, which has now stabilised with no panic-buying from customers. <p> Last week, Mother Dairy had doubled its supply of fruits and vegetables in the Delhi-NCR at over 300 tonnes per day, as customers began panic-buying of household essentials after announcement of the 21-day nationwide lockdown. </p><p> Mother Dairy, which is a major milk supplier in the national capital region with sales of over 30 lakh litres per day, has started home delivery for senior citizens in few localities of Delhi like Moti Bagh, Defence Colony and Greater Kailash, said Pradipta Sahoo, business head of Safal.</p><p> "We have supplied around 250 tonnes of fruits and vegetables today (Monday). The supply has come down from over 300 tonnes last week as panic-buying has stopped but still it is more than normal," he told . </p><p> Moreover, the local vendors have also now got access to sell in colonies, Sahoo said. </p><p> The rates have also come down of all vegetables including potatoes, tomatoes and cauliflowers, he said.</p><p> Before the lockdown, Mother Dairy used to supply 160-180 tonnes of fruits and vegetables per day in Delhi-NCR.</p><p> Sahoo said the Mother Dairy could increase the capacity up to 400 tonnes per day.</p><p> "We are procuring 90 per cent of our supply from farmers. The remaining 10 per cent comes from local wholesale markets such as Azadpur," he said. </p><p> Mother Dairy is sourcing fruits and vegetables from Delhi and neighbouring states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. </p><p> It is procuring onion from Maharashtra and potatoes from Agra in Uttar Pradesh.</p><p> Mother Dairy has enough stock of apples which it has stored in cold chain facility, he noted.</p><p> The company has more than 300 Safal stores across the national capital region.</p> Sahoo said the company is enforcing safe distancing at its stores to check spread of coronavirus. New Delhi, Apr 30 () Mother Dairy on Thursday said prices of vegetables and fruits are stable in the national capital while there is sufficient availability to meet the local demand.<p> On Thursday, it supplied about 250 tonnes of fresh fruits and vegetables to its over 300 retail stores Safal in the Delhi-NCR market.</p><p> Mother Dairy is a leading supplier of milk in the Delhi-NCR market with demand of over 30 lakh litre per day.</p><p> "We are supplying around 250-260 tonnes of fruits and vegetables per day in Delhi-NCR. We are purchasing bulk of the items directly from farmers and small quantities from local wholesale mandis," said Pradipta Sahoo, business head, Safal.</p><p> Asked about prices, he said rates are more or less stable, with minor fluctuations on a daily basis.</p><p> "We are selling onions, potatoes and tomatoes in a price range of Rs 20-30 per kg," he told .</p><p> Safal is selling potato at Rs 30 per kg, onion at Rs 20, tomato 26-28 per kg and cucumber Rs 20 per kg.</p><p> Bottle gourd is being sold at Rs 24, cabbage Rs 28, palak Rs 29, tinda Rs 49 and sponge gourd Rs 49. Water melon is available at nearly Rs 20 per kg.</p><p> After the imposition of lockdown from March 25, Mother Dairy has doubled its supply to more than 300 tonne per day as people were engaged in panic-buying but now the demand has come down to around 250 tonnes a day.</p><p> The vegetable prices quoted by local vendors are generally higher than the Mother Dairy and the rates also vary depending on the quality and the location.</p><p> Manoj, a local vendor at Paschim Vihar here, is selling onions at Rs 20 per kg, while rates of potatoes and tomatoes are Rs 30 per kg.</p><p> In green vegetables, cauliflower is available at Rs 40, while lady finger, french beans and pointed gourd are available at Rs 70-80 per kg.</p> Brinjal, bitter gourd and capsicum are being sold at Rs 50-60 per kg. Mother Dairy doubles supply of fruits, vegetables to over 300 tonnes a day in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi, Jan 30 () The Centre may soon offload imported onions at a highly subsidised rate of Rs 22-23/kg, down around 60 per cent from the current offered rate, as it apprehends rotting of the perishable kitchen item at ports, sources said on Thursday.
<p> The central government is currently offering imported onions to state governments at an average landed cost of Rs 58/kg for further distribution in the retail market. It is also bearing the transportation cost.
</p><p> To check spiralling onion prices, the government had in November 2019 decided to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onion through state-run MMTC. Since then, MMTC has been able to purchase 14,000 tonnes of onion from the overseas market.
</p><p> According to sources, a large quantity of imported onion is still lying at ports, especially in Maharashtra, as many states did not show interest to lift the commodity at high rates at a time when retail prices started cooling down on arrival of fresh crop.
</p><p> Many states withdrew their orders for lifting the imported onions as they could not retail it further owing to difference in taste compared with homegrown ones, the sources said.
</p><p> With few takers for imported onions, MMTC -- which had placed orders for import of 40,000 tonnes --- finally purchased only 14,000 tonnes and a large quantity of which is still lying at ports, the sources added.
</p><p> Agencies like Nafed, Mother Dairy as well as interested state governments can lift the imported onions at Rs 22-23/kg for distribution in mandis.
</p><p> The government was forced to import onion in a bid to contain prices, which have cooled down now to Rs 60/kg from the peak of Rs 160/kg in last few months.
</p><p> In its first estimate, the government has pegged the country's overall onion production to rise by seven per cent to 24.45 million tonnes in the current 2019-20 crop year, which may bring relief to consumers from high prices seen in the last few months.
</p><p> Onion crops have been grown in 12.93 lakh hectare in the 2019-20 crop year (July-June), slightly higher than 12.20 lakh hectare achieved during the previous year.
</p> Onion is grown during both kharif (summer) and rabi (winter) season. The government had recently said there was around 22 per cent damage in kharif onion crop due to late monsoon rains and later excess rainfall, which led to supply constraint and sharp rise in prices.  LUX MJH  LUX ANS

Govt plans to sell imported onion at Rs 22-23/kg to avoid rotting at port

New Delhi, Nov 25 () Public sector trading firm MMTC, which has been tasked to import onion on behalf of the Centre to cool prices, has contracted to import 6,090 tonnes from Egypt, and the edible bulb will be supplied to states in a price range of Rs 52-60 per kg.
<p> Last week, the Union Cabinet decided to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions to improve the domestic supply and control prices, which touched Rs 100 per kg earlier this month. Retail prices are ruling at around Rs 70 per kg in the national capital.
</p><p> "MMTC has placed order for the first consignment of 6,090 tonnes of onions from Egypt which will be arriving at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai. The Onions are being offered to state governments for distribution at the rate of Rs 52-55 per kilogram ex-Mumbai and will also be made available at the rate of Rs 60 per kilogram ex-Delhi," an official statement said.
</p><p> States could directly take the imported stock from the location and also have the option of getting transportation facilitated through NAFED, if required.
</p><p> "The supply of imported onions will begin from early December onwards," the statement said.
</p><p> Consumer Affairs Secretary Avinash K Srivastava on Monday held video conference with state governments to analyse their demand. He has also written a letter to chief secretaries of all states on November 23 in this regard.
</p><p> While the Delhi government is yet to place any demand for onions, NAFED has informed that it will retail onions through its own outlets and those of Mother Dairy, Kendriya Bhandar and NCCF.
</p><p> "The total demand received so far from various state governments for the 1st week is 2,265 tonnes which includes demand from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala and Sikkim and also includes the demand of NAFED for supplies in Delhi," the statement said.
</p><p> Other states have been requested to indicate their demand at the earliest.
</p><p> On November 19, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said production in kharif and late-kharif seasons of 2019-20 is estimated to fall 26 per cent to 5.2 million tonne, putting pressure on supply and prices.
</p><p> In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Paswan said onion is a seasonal crop with harvesting period of rabi (March to June), kharif (October to December) and late-kharif (January-March). During July to October, the supply in the market comes from stored onions from rabi season.
</p><p> "During 2019-20, there was a 3-4 weeks delay in sowing as well as decline in sown area of the kharif onion because of late arrival of monsoon. Further, untimely prolonged rains in the major growing states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh during the harvesting period caused damage to the standing crops in these regions," Paswan had said.
</p><p> As a result, the minister said the production of kharif crop was affected.
</p><p> The rains during the September-October period also hit transportation of crop from these producing regions to consuming centres, he had said.
</p><p> "This led to limited availability of kharif onions in the market and has put pressure on its prices," Paswan had said.
</p> The minister said the government has banned onion exports and imposed stock limits to boost domestic supply and check prices.   MJH HRS

Piccolo, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=3eae9533383867ef75b980597fe557327ea9fc4a9a3ea9176d7b2fca8e2d79c3&amp;postID=65ddb0682b09cffef060255c&amp;postSlug=doctor-dies-allergic-reaction-disney-world-restaurant-orlando-meal-lawsuit-2024-2&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scribd.com%2Fdocument%2F708687171%2FRaglan-Road-Lawsuit">the 19-page complaint</a> alleges negligence by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/annoying-things-tourist-should-stop-doing-at-disney-world-2024-2">Walt Disney Parks and Resorts</a> and Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant.</p><p>The complaint says that Tangsuan, a family doctor in New York, died on October 5 after eating at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-restaurants-disney-springs-florida-places-to-skip-from-local-2023-12">restaurant in Disney Springs</a> — a shopping and dining complex at the Walt Disney World Resort.</p><p>According to the suit, Tangsuan, Piccolo, and Piccolo's mother dined at the restaurant because they believed it would have "proper safeguards" to protect Tangsuan from allergens.</p><p>The complaint says that Tangsuan and Piccolo repeatedly informed the wait staff about her severe allergies to nuts and dairy, and asked explicitly whether certain items on the menu could be made without those ingredients.</p><p>The lawsuit alleges that the waiter guaranteed Tangsuan and Piccolo that the restaurant would be safe to eat at.</p><p>Tangsuan ordered a vegetable fritter, battered scallops, a vegan shepherd's pie, and onion rings, according to the lawsuit.</p><p>When the food arrived without allergen-free flags, the couple once again sought reassurance from the waiter, who confirmed that the food was free from nuts and dairy, the complaint says.</p><p>Following the meal, the couple went shopping, splitting up to look in different stores, according to the lawsuit, which was when Tangsuan started to have a severe allergic reaction, struggling to breathe and collapsing to the floor.</p><p>The complaint says Tangsuan <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epipens-used-in-emergencies-but-hard-to-test-2019-1#:~:text=EpiPens%20must%20be%20highly%20reliable,documents%20obtained%20by%20Business%20Insider.">self-administered an Epi-pen</a> while someone else called 911.</p><p>When Piccolo tried to reach his wife, someone else picked up her phone, telling him to go to the hospital immediately, according to the lawsuit.</p><p>He was later informed that his wife had died, the complaint says. An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fivesfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Kanokporn-Tangsuan/#!/Obituary">online obituary</a> says she was 42 at the time of her death.</p><p>Piccolo is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 under the Florida Wrongful Death Act, as well as damages for loss of companionship, mental pain and suffering, loss of income, and medical and funeral expenses.</p><p>According to the results of an autopsy included in the complaint, Tangsuan's cause of death was the result of anaphylaxis due to the elevated levels of dairy and nuts in her system.</p><p>The lawsuit alleges negligence by the restaurant and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, which controls the restaurants in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/celebrating-christmas-at-disney-springs-photos-2021-12">Disney Springs.</a></p><p>It also says that the restaurant failed to train staff adequately, warn Tangsuan about allergens in her food, and prepare allergen-free food despite repeated requests.</p><p>Walt Disney Parks and Resorts did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p>

Also, be sure to remove any seeds. </p><h3>6. Blueberries</h3><p>Blueberries are another fruit that aren't toxic, but should only be given to healthy cats in small quantities, says Hall. The blueberries must be fresh, not frozen, to avoid any preservatives.</p><p>Blueberries do have antioxidants, but Hall says that there are other better sources of antioxidants for cats, such as regular cat food from reputable brands which will have all the nutrients your cat needs</p><p>"If you're looking to just give treats, that's different, but you shouldn't be giving other food to supplement nutrition your cat is already getting in adequate quantities," says Hall.</p><h2><br />Foods you should never feed your cat</h2><p>Here are seven foods you should avoid feeding your cat.</p><h3>1. Chocolate</h3><p>Cats should not eat chocolate, because it can contain compounds such as caffeine and theobromine, which may cause increased heart rate, tremors, seizures, and in serious cases, death, says Osborne.</p><p>Osborne says dark chocolate and baking chocolate are particularly harmful since they contain more cocoa, which means there's a higher content of caffeine and theobromine which can be potentially toxic to cats.</p><h3>2. Milk</h3><p>Despite the stereotype, adult cats should not drink milk. Yes, they consume their mother's milk when they're kittens but that's different from that jug of cow's milk in your fridge.</p><p>"For the vast majority of felines, dairy is neither beneficial nor appealing because, in addition to being obligate carnivores, <a href="https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feeding-your-cat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">many cats are also lactose intolerant,</a>" says Osborne. </p><p>Therefore, consuming milk can cause gastrointestinal issues for your cat like vomiting or diarrhea. </p><p>You can try giving your cat dairy-free milk like almond or oat milk, but you still run the risk of stomach upset, Osborne says.</p><h3>3. Cheese</h3><p>Since cheese is a dairy product, it's generally best to avoid giving it to your cats, says Osborne. </p><p>This is for the same reason why they shouldn't drink milk — because they are lactose intolerant. Again, this can cause GI problems like vomiting or diarrhea.</p><p>Even dry-aged cheese which might be okay for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfWNZlbt8eY&amp;ab_channel=ScienceInsider" target="_blank" rel="noopener">humans who are lactose intolerant</a> is not ideal for cats, says Osborne.</p><h3>4. Peanut butter</h3><p>Peanut butter is best left for dogs to enjoy, Osborne says. This is because the thick consistency of peanut butter makes it hard for cats to swallow, which could lead to choking. <ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/restaurant-secrets-2017-8">Restaurant servers</a> are often the people who can make or break a dining-out experience.</li><li>Insider spoke to servers about things only those who've worked in the industry will understand.</li></ul><p>Being a restaurant server is a lot harder than you'd think, but there are some benefits to the job.</p><p>From making someone's birthday a little more special to connecting with customers over the lunch rush, servers are on the frontlines when it comes to how customers feel after dining in a restaurant. There are also challenges to being a server, including low wages, rude customers, and even harassment. </p><p>Insider spoke with three restaurant servers in three different states — Texas, Georgia, and Connecticut — who have more than 10 years of serving experience between them. They defined the things only servers understand, and what they desperately want customers to know.</p><h2>Small gestures from customers go a long way</h2><div type="image" title="stack of dirty plates at a restaurant" height="3648" width="4864" msid="97329532" hostid="261" sizebytes="445920"></div><p>One server, Cassidy B., who works at a restaurant in Texas, told Insider there are small ways customers can help make their server's day go much smoother.</p><p>"Just a simple smile, helping stack plates, or giving just a $1 extra can really mean the world when you are surrounded by five-to-six tables of people expecting you to be on top of every detail," they said.</p><h2>There are ways customers can ensure they get good service</h2><p>"Most times it's super easy to correct a mistaken order or food quality issue, but you've got to be kind," a former employee at Olive Garden in Kennesaw, Georgia, told Insider.</p><p>"I'm so much more likely to offer to help or even offer to comp an item if you're kind about it," they said. "What's the point of demanding a refund or making me feel bad over a plate of pasta? Relax."</p><p>If a customer doesn't like their meal, accepting something else from the menu is usually the best course of action.</p><p>"On occasion when a customer has expressed their dislike of something, I appreciate it if they are willing to accept alternatives," Megan Feragne, who worked at The Vanilla Bean Café in Putnam, Connecticut, between 2014 and 2020, told Insider. "For example, if they thought their latte was too sweet, I would be happy to make them another. It can be awkward if a customer tells you they do not like something but do not want you to do anything about it."</p><h2>Laughing with a customer often means a better tip</h2><div type="image" title="restaurant tips on a white plate" height="3840" width="5119" msid="97329534" hostid="261" sizebytes="600988"></div><p>"If I found myself laughing with a customer, it almost always meant a bigger tip and a more smooth transaction," Feragne told Insider, but she ensured good service in other ways too.</p><p>"One of my favorite things to do when taking an order from a customer is to let them know my personal favorites on the menu and how often I order them. After all, the food that the servers crave is usually well-researched," she said.</p><h2>An unsupportive manager is far worse than a rude customer</h2><p>"Rude customers come and go, but having management that is nasty and willing to throw you under the bus is always worse," Cassidy B. said. "This isn't in all restaurants, but I have had this happen and it is frustrating. It leads you to being ridiculed for things outside of your control and often tipped less because the manager sacrificed you to save face. Which means I don't get paid."</p><h2>You'll see your coworkers at their worst</h2><p>Work in service long enough, and you'll learn that bad days do not equal bad people.</p><p>"You see your coworkers at their worst. You will literally be fighting one minute and best friends the next. One of the perks is that everyone understands what you're going through because they are going through it too. It's really nice to have that community," Cassidy B. said.</p><h2>Low wages are often an expected part of being a server</h2><p>The average minimum wage in the United States for tipped employees, which includes servers, varies by state, but eight states allow them to be paid a "subminimum wage" that can be as low as just $2.13 per hour, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/13/business/economy/tipped-wage-subminimum.html?">the New York Times reported.</a></p><p>"I am getting paid $2 an hour to be here. If there is an issue with the food, etc, all restaurants are happy and willing to fix it for you and even provide discounts," Cassidy B., who works in Texas where server minimum wage is <a href="https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/texas-laws-tipped-employees.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">$2.13 per hour</a>, said. </p><p>"There is no reason to get nasty with people making poverty wages," they continued.</p><h2>And sexual harassment is common</h2><p>"This is particularly true for female servers, but I have seen male servers harassed as well," Cassidy B. said. "It's disturbing and makes the job way more draining than it needs to be. And there is no support when it happens, you're meant to just suck it up, but often that can put you in dangerous situations."</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/07/22/1019017172/tips-and-service-with-a-smile-drive-sexual-harassment-in-restaurants-study-finds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NPR</a> and <a href="https://onefairwage.site/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/OFW_TheTippingPoint_3-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a 2021 survey by One Fair Wage</a>, more than 70% of female restaurant employees have experienced sexual harassment in their careers, and tipped workers who receive a "subminimum wage" experience sexual harassment at a higher rate than non-tipped restaurant employees. A majority of restaurant servers and workers who rely on tips are also women — <a href="https://rocunited.org/campaigns/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">67%</a>, according to Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, a nonprofit organization that works to improve working conditions for restaurant industry employees. </p><p>NPR also reported that restaurant-industry workers report harassment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission more often than any other industry. </p><h2>There are perks to working odd hours</h2><p>Though hours as a restaurant server can be unpredictable, Feragne said there are benefits to working as a server versus a standard 9-to-5 job, "particularly for scheduling the daunting tasks of life like doctor's appointments, oil changes, etc," she said.</p><p>"Unfortunately, working as a restaurant server can also take you away from family events like Saturday afternoon first-birthday parties, given how restaurant capacity increases over the weekends," she said.</p><h2>It's not always a bummer to work on a holiday</h2><p>"I live in a household where multiple people work at restaurants, so shifting a holiday a day or two from its calendar date because we are all scheduled to work on the actual date is a usual occurrence," Feragne told Insider.</p><p>"In my opinion, it is so special to work on a holiday, especially the busiest ones like Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Valentine's Day. It is really nice to be a part of a family or a couple's story, even just for a few hours," she said. "I especially love to wait on customers during an important birthday, when I can sneakily light candles in the back and bring a cake to their table while singing."</p><p>However, depending on where you work, serving on a holiday can also mean worse tips and a harder shift.</p><p>"Valentine's Day is a beast," a former Olive Garden employee told Insider. "The worst tipping I've ever experienced. I'm generalizing, of course, but most people are already feeling obligated to buy their partner's dinner, so an extra tip on top of that is a no-go."</p><p>"I have witnessed three proposals though," they said. "In Olive Garden. It's an unspoken thing," the former Olive Garden employee told Insider.</p><p>"I'll sing for your table if you sing for my next one. It's peak embarrassment to sing alone to a table of strangers," they said. "And also, why do they always beg you to sing 'Happy Birthday,' but never join in for their own loved one? No free solos. Never."</p><h2>Work somewhere long enough, and there's no need to write down orders</h2><p>As a customer, you might be surprised to see your waiter not writing down their tables' orders. However, for many servers who've been in the industry for years, remembering orders becomes second nature.</p><p>"I am more apt to write an order down if it has a lot of modifications, for example, no lettuce, hold the onions — simply because I care too much to jeopardize forgetting something," Feragne said. "This rings true with allergies as well. If there is a gluten or dairy allergy, I am certain to take detailed records of what can and cannot be served to the customer."</p><h2>You can always tell when a customer has been a server</h2><p>According to the former Olive Garden employee, "knowing what they want to order, ordering all at once, and being direct" are all telltale signs someone at your table was once or is currently a server.</p><p>"There's almost an understanding with them that eases the anxiety of getting a bad table," they said.</p><h2>You'll have some sort of food all over you by the end of the night</h2><div type="image" title="waiter with her back to us with three pizzas in her hands on the restaurant terrace" height="3200" width="4266" msid="97329539" hostid="261" sizebytes="512322"></div><p>"For me, I had Romano cheese basically ground into the bottom of my shoes, in every pocket, in my apron, in my hair, and somehow always down my shirt," the former Olive Garden employee said. It's baked in a wood-fired oven for about two minutes to create a supple pie that looks blistered along the crust. "The fact that the flour in America was higher in protein made for a stretchier, larger, chewier pizza. The fact that our dairy product was more about cows than it was about buffalo like in Naples changed the cheese." </p><p>There are two versions of New York-style pizza, according to Wiener: the New York-style pizza and the New York slice. The New York-style pizza is the first iteration, and refers to a whole pie. Made using a brick oven fired by wood or gas, New York-style pizza features a drier texture than Neapolitan and showcases large swaths of char on the base of the pizza, along with unseasoned tomato (or lightly seasoned with some salt), and mozzarella.</p><p>The New York slice is what many are familiar with. Served by the slice, this is the midday (or midnight) snack taken from a 20-inch round pie that's baked in a deck oven, handed to us on a grease-stained paper plate, and folded in half to consume while on the go. </p><h2><strong>Sicilian</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A pepperoni Sicilian pizza." height="667" width="889" msid="86492818" hostid="261"></div><ul><li><strong>Shape:</strong> Rectangular</li><li><strong>Crust style:</strong> Thick and puffy</li></ul><p>Sicilian pizza is a "relative" of the Sicilian sfincione - a focaccia topped with tomato, onion, garlic, anchovy, caciocavallo cheese, and breadcrumbs. Sicilian pizzas are made by stretching dough into a rectangular pan and allowing it to rise, or proof. And so when the dough - which is also made with more water - rises and bakes, it doesn't crest the top. This traps the fatty brick cheese specifically used for Detroit-style pizza, forcing it to the edges of the pie and resulting in the Detroit-style's signature twist. "A distinct characteristic of Detroit style is that the cheese burns on the edges. "If you were to order a regular pizza in New Haven, it doesn't come with mozzarella. "With California, it's way more about keeping things local [with the produce]," Wiener says. "You put arugula on a New York slice, it just doesn't feel right. California? "Deep-dish pizza - you eat it when you're not planning on moving," says Wiener. </p><p>The sumptuously filling deep-dish-style was created sometime in the 1940s with the brutal Chicago winter in mind, like many of the other Midwestern styles of pizza. It's thick like Detroit-style or Sicilian, but the deep-dish pizza gets its depth from cheese and topping as opposed to crust. St. Louis-style pizza is almost exactly the same, except, instead of mozzarella, it uses a specific dairy product called Provel (a combination of provolone, cheddar, and swiss), which was common in the area in the 1970s when the style emerged at <a href="https://www.imospizza.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Imo's Pizzeria</a>.</p><h2><strong>Roman-style </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="A cut Roman pizza." height="667" width="889" msid="86492828" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Shape:</strong> Rectangular</li><li><strong>Crust style:</strong> Thick and puffy</li></ul><p>"The exact history of it is kind of murky, but it seems to be more of a modern variation [of pizza]," says Wiener, who attributes Roman-style's origins in the '80s or '90s.</p><p>Otherwise known as "pizza al taglio," which means "by the cut," Roman pizza is a sliced pizza cut into squares. It's reminiscent of Sicilian, but even lighter and fluffier, and usually showcases decadent toppings. The style got popularized about a decade ago by Gabriele Bonci's Pizzarium in Italy, which was where they started using thicker dough with more water content that created a crust with a big and bubbly cross section. "It's a style a lot of people are getting into these days," Wiener says. </p><h2><strong>Unconventional pizza creations</strong></h2><p>While you can never go wrong with a pie, a few inverted and sauceless interpretations of pizza have also arisen over the years for us to chew on.</p><ul><li>Envision your pizza but rolled up and that's <strong>stromboli</strong> - dough is stretched and filled with cheese, meats, and other ingredients before baking.</li><li>Where a stromboli is a rolled pizza, a <strong>calzone</strong> is a folded pizza. A calzone is made by stretching out the dough like pizza, putting cheese and toppings on half, and folding the other half closed over it, and then either frying or baking it. </li><li>A pizza turnover of sorts, <strong>panzarottis</strong> are similar to calzones but folded over, fried, and sized for one person to walk and nibble on.</li></ul><h2>What pizza looks like around the world</h2><h2><strong>Insider's takeaway</strong></h2><p>There's no set way to make pizza, which makes it a versatile and adaptable dish. NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday stepped up its efforts to tame rising food prices through a slew of measures meant to increase the supply of rice, potatoes, onions, fruits and vegetables in local markets and announced a crackdown on hoarders.<br />
<br /> "Additional quantities of rice will be released into the market. We will import pulses, if there is a shortage. Cereals and edible oil can be imported if states feel there is a shortage," <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Finance-minister">finance minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> told reporters after a meeting with his Cabinet colleagues<br />

Though the government is monitoring the price movement of 22 commodities, a spurt has been noticed in four-five food products. The government's move to announce the steps is aimed at managing prices before they start spiraling and have political implications.<br />
<br /> The UPA government was often blamed for its slow response, propelling <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword> into a key election issue. The Narendra Modi government's response has been quick and came a day after data showed that potato and other food prices had driven inflation past the 6% mark for the first time since December. It has repeatedly said it intends to focus on keeping inflation under control.<br />

Fears of weak monsoon and its adverse impact on food production are driving up prices, especially of vegetables. In addition, the violence in Iraq has triggered fears of a spike in oil prices, which can push up inflation further.<br />

While the government imposed a minimum export price of $300 a tonne on onions to discourage shipments out of the country, a similar levy on potatoes will be initiated by the commerce department, Jaitley said.<br />

On June 11, TOI was the first to report that the government was going to impose a minimum export price to augment supplies in the domestic market even as it was tracking the prices of potatoes, non-basmati rice and skimmed milk powder.<br />
<br /> The <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="finance">finance</keyword> minister said states have been asked to delist certain items, which are usually procured through Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees, so that they come into the open market. Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung has been asked to procure onions and potatoes from the open market and ensure abundant supplies through Mother Dairy retail outlets. He has also been asked to delist all food items in the capital, a move that will enable farmers to sell their produce directly to the market.<br />

Similarly, 50 lakh tonnes of rice will be released in the open market through state governments to cool prices. Food Corporation of India has abundant stocks but has in the past been accused of holding on to rice and wheat, even as prices soared in the local market.<br />

With regard to pulses and edible oil, states will be given a line of credit to directly import them to meet local demand, Jaitley said.<br />

"The meeting also reviewed the steady increase in retail price of milk and decided to consider withholding export incentives, currently in force," an official statement said.
