New Delhi, Asset management companies launched 212 <keyword id="20372350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-fund-offerings" source="keywords">new fund offerings</keyword> mobilising Rs 63,854 crore in 2023, marginally higher from previous year, on the back of significant uptrends in broader markets. In comparison, Asset Management Companies (AMCs) garnered Rs 62,187 crore through 228 New Fund Offerings (NFOs) in 2022. Further, they collected Rs 99,704 crore in 2021 and Rs 53,703 crore in 2020, according to data compiled by <keyword id="20372349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="morningstar-india" source="keywords">Morningstar India</keyword>. "The trend towards the financialisation of assets in India is unmistakable. Aligned with changing consumption behaviours and a need for a higher standard of living, investors recognise the importance of long-term investing. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity for financial planning and the creation of liquid assets to address emergencies and pave the way for wealth-building," FYERS Research said in its report. It further said that "despite indices exhibiting strength, propelled by robust economic activity, steady <keyword id="19951327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst" source="keywords">GST</keyword> collections, and confidence in government reforms and policies, anticipating a similar outperformance in 2024 may not be prudent. Valuations across various market capitalisations look elevated, advocating a cautious approach to direct equities in the short term". As per the FYERS report, the January-March period of 2023 saw the highest number of NFOs at 57. However, the peak fund mobilisation occurred in the July-September period, totalling Rs 22,049 crore. Additionally, 29 thematic or sectoral funds raised an aggregate of Rs 17,946 crore in 2023. With an increased risk appetite for equities and awareness of products and offerings, retail investors opted for higher-risk products like thematic and sectoral funds compared to other products. Usually, NFOs come during a surging market when investor sentiments are high and optimistic. The NFOs were floated to capitalise on the mood of investors and attract their investment as they were willing to invest at that time. Industry experts said that the stock market performance along with the positive investor sentiments led to higher fund mobilisation through NFOs in 2023. In the year 2023, Nifty 50 index delivered a return of 20 per cent, majorly supported by earnings growth. <keyword id="19994732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty-midcap" source="keywords">Nifty Midcap</keyword> and <keyword id="20118967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty-smallcap" source="keywords">Nifty Smallcap</keyword> indices recorded impressive returns of 47 per cent and 56 per cent, respectively. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) infused a substantial Rs 1.7 lakh crore into the market and the infusion played a pivotal role in propelling Indian equities beyond the USD 4 trillion market capitalization milestone. Overall, the mutual fund industry saw a net inflow of Rs 2.74 lakh crore in 2023 as compared to an inflow of over Rs 71,000 crore in the preceding year. The huge inflow could be on the back of sustained investors' interest in equity funds, arbitrage funds, and index funds &amp; ETFs. Debt schemes experienced a net outflow of Rs 46,100 crore last year, while equity schemes saw substantial inflows of Rs 1.62 lakh crore, closely followed by hybrid category schemes at Rs 93,208 crore.

Women account for only 10 per cent of the total <keyword id="86852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fund-managers" source="Orion">fund managers</keyword> in the <keyword id="6354820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund" source="Orion">mutual fund</keyword> industry despite a gradual increase in their numbers witnessed in the last few years, a report said on Tuesday. The <keyword id="200126" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="morningstar" source="Orion">Morningstar</keyword> Investment Adviser <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s annual report on women fund managers in the asset-management industry said the total count of women fund managers has increased from 32 last year to 42 now. Interestingly, the total number of fund managers also saw a healthy increase this year to 428 from 399 last year. "When it comes to gender diversity, the latest findings of our report show that of the 428 fund managers, 42 are women who are managing funds either as primary or secondary managers," said the Morningstar report released ahead of International Women's Day on May 8. With a meagre 9.81 per cent representation, women still remain drastically under-represented among the ranks of mutual fund managers, Morningstar said. According to the report, there were only 18 women fund managers in 2017, and the number has increased gradually since then. The only exception was in 2020 when there was a minor decrease. "The 42 women fund managers were spread across 24 fund houses, with five fund houses having three or more women fund managers; six fund houses had two women fund managers while 13 fund houses had at least one-woman fund manager," it added. Women account for only 10% of total fund managers in MF industry: Morningstar report

New Delhi, Strong, incessant net flows and favourable market conditions propped up the assets base for the small-cap mutual fund category to cross Rs 2 lakh crore mark in November-end, a sharp surge of 69 per cent from a year earlier. On a month-on-month basis, the Assets Under Management (AUM) of the category grew 10 per cent to Rs 1.99 lakh crore, data with the <keyword id="826589" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="Orion">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (AMFI) showed. Since the fourth quarter of 2019-20, the AUM for the category has seen a phenomenal rise, due to favourable market movement, along with record net inflows. Small-cap funds attracted Rs 37,178 in this year (till November). This includes Rs 3,699 crore last month and a record fund infusion of Rs 4,495 crore in October. On the other hand, the large-cap category saw a pull out of Rs 2,688 crore in the first 11 months of this year. "A few fund houses have limited the inflows in their small-cap funds over the last quarter given the sharp rise in flows and concerns on valuations," <keyword id="112974" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="morningstar-india" source="Orion">Morningstar India</keyword> had mentioned in its September quarterly report. Going by the AMFI data, the asset base of the small-cap mutual fund hit its peak of Rs 2.2 lakh crore at the end of November. Additionally, investor accounts in the category, too, climbed a staggering 62 lakh folios to 1.6 crore in November from 97.52 lakh a year-earlier. This shows that investors have become more inclined toward small-cap funds. Under Sebi's rule, in small-cap mutual funds, fund managers are required to invest at least 65 per cent of their portfolios in small-cap stocks. <keyword id="2252616" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="g-pradeepkumar" source="Orion">G Pradeepkumar</keyword>, CEO, <keyword id="6536298" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="union-asset-management-company" source="Orion">Union Asset Management Company</keyword>, suggested that investors stagger their investments in small- and mid-cap funds in view of the possibility of short-term volatility. Overall, the AUM of the 42-player mutual fund industry reached Rs 49.04 lakh crore in November-end from Rs 40.37 lakh crore in November 2022, suggesting a gain of 22 per cent.

Consistent inflows push small-cap funds AUM past Rs 2 lakh cr mark in Nov

New Delhi, Mar 22 () Equity-oriented mutual fund schemes delivered a negative return of about 25 per cent to investors over the last one month as the broader market witnessed significant downtrend amid coronavirus-triggered recession fears. The 44-player mutual fund industry is not immune to the economic blowback of COVID-19, and going ahead, small and mid-cap equity schemes will continue to remain under pressure in the short to medium term on account of volatility in the markets, said Krishna Karwa, Senior Research Analyst, at iFAST Financial India.According to data compiled by Morningstar India, all the equity scheme categories -- equity linked saving scheme (ELSS), mid-cap, large &amp; mid-cap, large-cap, small-cap, mid-cap and multi-cap have given negative return in the range of 25-26 per cent between February 19 and March 18, 2020.Individually, large and mid-cap funds have given a negative return of 26.63 per cent followed by large-cap (26.58 per cent), ELSS (26.47 per cent), multi-cap (26.45 per cent), small-cap (26.32 per cent) and mid-cap (24.84 per cent).Notably, all the funds fell less than their respective benchmark indices during the bear market.The benchmark Sensex crashed about 30 per cent during the same period, falling from 41,000 level to 29,000 level, following the coronavirus pandemic, decline in international crude oil price and the Yes Bank fiasco."We have seen such falls in the market multiple times before, while pessimism may remain for sometime given the uncertain situation with the spread of the coronavirus. But as we have seen in the past over the long term markets will recover," Morningstar India Director- Manager Research Kaustubh Belapurkar said.He, further, said that investors should continue to focus on asset allocation and continue with their investment and systematic investment plans (SIPs). If an investor was underallocated to equities as per his risk profile, it would be a good time to start increasing the equity exposure at current low valuations. He advised investors to keep at least 7-10 year investment horizon in mind with a volatile asset class like equities.Echoing similar views, iFAST Financial India's Karwa said that corrections have made the valuations pretty attractive, and investors should consider going long on small and mid-cap funds. "Despite witnessing a marked dip in net asset value (NAV) in recent times, large-cap and blue chip funds should be able to bounce back at a faster pace. Quality businesses and industry leaders with superior fundamentals will always command a premium multiple over the rest, and would be the first ones to see investment inflows on major dips," he added.With regard to the debt schemes, Karwa expects stress in the credit markets to persist. From a defensive standpoint, an investor should focus more on short duration debt funds (typically up to one year) with good liquidity. Those with a higher risk appetite can keep long duration credit risk funds on their radar as well, he added."The current market downturn has led to both concerns as well as a sense of potential wealth creation opportunity due to this increased awareness," said Satyen Kothari, Founder &amp; CEO, Cube Wealth. Coronavirus: Equity mutual funds give 25 pc negative returns to investors

New Delhi, Feb 13 () Foreign investors turned net buyers in the Indian markets in the December quarter, pumping in a staggering USD 6.3 billion on the back of the government's intent to bring reforms for supporting the economic growth. This comes following a net outflow of USD 3.22 billion by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in the quarter ended September 2019. According to a Morningstar report, foreign investors started the quarter on a subdued note as they turned risk-averse with fears of a global recession and trade wars gaining momentum. Moreover, the slowdown in the Indian economy, paired with world bodies like the International Monetary Fund, the Asian Development Bank, and Moody's cutting India's growth forecasts, also dented sentiments, it added. "The scenario improved as the quarter progressed largely on the back of the government's intent to bring reforms and changes which are necessary for the economy to grow," the report noted. Since August, the government has announced a series of measures to revive the economy and regain the confidence of foreign investors. Some of the prominent measures included a roll-back of the superrich surcharge, the merger and recapitalisation of public sector banks, increased liquidity support for housing finance companies, and NBFCs, relief measures for the revival of the automobile sector, a bailout package for stalled projects in the real estate sector, and most significantly, rationalisation of corporate tax rates. "Gradually, these measures started to find favour among foreign investors as they started returning to the Indian equity markets. Better-than-expected earnings growth also encouraged investors," Morningstar said. As per the report, FPIs went on a buying spree through the quarter ended December 2019 notably, they were net buyers in all three months of the quarter as they pumped in net assets worth USD 6.31 billion. Also, the value of FPI investments in Indian equities surged significantly during the quarter under review largely due to huge inflows from such investors with gains posted by the Indian equity markets. The value of FPI investments in Indian equities stood at USD 432 billion, which is considerably higher than the USD 402 billion recorded in the previous quarter. This was the highest in the last eight quarters, with the previous high of USD 442 billion during the three months ended December 2017. Consequently, such investors' contribution to Indian equity market capitalisation also moved up to 20.9 per cent from 19.3 per cent in the previous quarter. SP MRMR

Alternative mutual funds, are funds that have more nontraditional investments and strategies that are more like hedge funds, than the traditional buy and hold. These funds have been growing fast, from about $38 billion in 172 funds at the end of 2008, to $160 billion in 429 funds at the end of February 2014. But many advisors are wary of these funds because they are complex, expensive, lack transparency, and because they have "short track records," reports Daisy Maxey at The Wall Street Journal. 
"The concept is borrowed from hedge funds and hedge funds have really high fees and very poor track records," Christopher Van Slyke, a founding partner of WorthPointe, told Maxey. "So why we would want to bring that set of circumstances to the masses for mutual funds, I have no idea." Van Slyke also added that the fees - which can range from 1.9% to 4.6% according to Morningstar - are so high that they offset any good ideas these funds have.

Money management firm GMO has a proprietary measure of sentiment made up of a wide range of measures, and they say it looks stretched. "Our finding, which comes as no great surprise, is that sentiment has reached an extreme level, fast approaching two standard deviations above its long-run average, which goes back to 1950," writes GMO's Edward Chancellor. "In fact, the current score on our composite measure has only been exceeded in 1968 (during the 'Go-Go Years,' also known as the 'Great Garbage Market'), and between 1998 and 2000 (during the TMT bubble).
"Clearly, the U.S. stock market is not as manic as it became during the late stages of the Dotcom bubble - IPO issuance and first-day returns and mutual fund flows are far below their record levels at the turn of the century," added Chancellor. New Delhi, Apr 19 () Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have withdrawn a net Rs 12,650 crore from the Indian capital markets in April so far amid the coronavirus crisis. Between April 1 to 17, FPIs pulled out a net sum of Rs 3,808 crore from equities and Rs 8,842 crore from the debt segment, the depositories data showed. The total net outflow stood at Rs 12,650 crore. However, April has been a tad better compared to March, when overseas investors had withdrawn a record Rs 1.1 lakh crore on a net basis from the Indian markets (both equity and debt). The quantum of net outflows has significantly slowed down, at least from equities, said Himanshu Srivastava, senior analyst manager research, Morningstar India. "Out of eight trading days so far in the holiday truncated month, FPIs were net buyers in the Indian equity markets in four," he said. Citing the reason for net inflows on some days in April, Harsh Jain, co-founder and COO at Groww, said "global markets are becoming more stable. The general belief is that the virus has peaked in many parts of Europe which is aiding the sentiments of global investors. The oil deal between OPEC and Russia is also contributing to the relatively more stable markets." According to Srivastava, the widespread concern among foreign investors about slowdown in the global economy due to the COVID-19 outbreak has been keeping them on the tenterhooks. He added that slowdown in the quantum of net outflows in April does not indicate a change in the trend at this juncture as the underlying environment continues to be negative. However, he said this could be a result of India gaining prominence among foreign investors for doing well with regards to containing the pandemic. In addition to that, measures announced by the government and the RBI periodically to revitalise the sagging economy would also be resonating well with investors. The sharp fall in the markets has also provided investors an opportunity to invest at relatively attractive levels, he said. Going forward, Srivastava cautioned that "there lies a bumpy ride ahead." In such times of uncertainty, FPIs would continue to adopt a measured approach when it comes to investing in emerging markets like India. FPIs pull out Rs 12,650 cr in April amid COVID-19 turbulence

New Delhi, Apr 5 () Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have net withdrawn a record Rs 1.1 lakh crore from the Indian markets in March as the coronavirus pandemic dented investor sentiment worldwide. According to latest depositories data, FPIs pulled out a net Rs 61,973 crore from equities and Rs 56,211 crore from the bond market in March, taking the cumulative net outflow to Rs 1,18,184 crore. The outflow of funds in March comes after six consecutive months of investment by FPIs since September 2019. This is also the highest withdrawal ever since the FPI data has been made available by the National Securities Depository Ltd. Besides, in just two trading sessions of April, FPIs have withdrawn a net sum of Rs 6,735 crore from the domestic markets. Out of this, Rs 3,802 crore were pulled out from equities and Rs 2,933 crore from the debt segment. "The sell-off in March is mostly driven by quant funds, hedge funds, and risk parity funds," Harsh Jain, co-founder and COO at Groww said. Terming the fund outflow as "unparalleled", Himanshu Srivastava, senior analyst manager research, Morningstar India, said that with fear over the degree of impact that Covid-19 could leave on the global economy, foreign investors stormed out of the emerging markets, with India among the worst hit. "The intensity of the situation could be gauged from the fact that even during the financial crisis of 2008, FPIs sold net assets worth USD 9.3 billion in the Indian markets while in March 2020, they have been net sellers to the tune of USD 16.5 billion," he added. Regarding the future of FPI flows, Srivastava said these are unprecedented scenarios and with risk-taking going off the table, emerging markets like India may most likely witness a prolonged period of net outflows till the time situation on the coronavirus front stabilizes. Jain said: "RBI raised the limit FPIs can invest in corporate bonds to 15 per cent on March 30th. While this is encouraging, it is unlikely to drive investments immediately. FPIs pull out record Rs 1.1 lakh cr in March amidst Covid-19 mayhem

New Delhi, Jan 12 () Adopting a cautious approach amid the US-Iran tensions, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) have pulled out a net sum of Rs 2,415 crore from the Indian capital markets in January so far.
 As per latest depositories data, FPIs invested a net amount of Rs 777 crore in equities and pulled out Rs 3,192.7 crore from the debt segment between January 1-10. This translates into a cumulative net outflow of Rs 2,415.7 crore. 
 Overseas investors have turned net sellers in January after remaining buyers for four consecutive months since September 2019.
 "Cautiousness among foreign investors was apparent as they closely watched the developments on the global front before investing in the Indian equity markets. Geopolitical turmoil triggered by increased tension between US and Iran played a key role in the way equity markets behaved globally," said Himanshu Srivastava, senior analyst manager research at Morningstar Investment Adviser India.
 However, both the US and Iran have shown their intentions to de-escalate military tensions. This may result in the rebuilding of risk-on sentiment which may be positive for foreign flows into Indian equity markets going ahead, he added.
 Additionally, FPIs have the Budget announcements in their sights.
 "We can expect the government to make announcements to boost the economy, including infrastructure spending. FPI investment into India will pick up in a bigger way following budgetary announcements aimed at improving the economy," said Harsh Jain, co-founder and COO at Groww. SRS

When clients make such decisions, Abel thinks its important for advisors to say three words "Don't do that."

In her latest press conference, Federal Reserve Board Chair Janet Yellen, provided guidance that short-term rates would be held low for about six months after it ends its monthly asset purchases. Expecting interest rates to rise, investors have poured into "floating rate debt and short duration funds in the past year and a half, writes Matthew Tucker at BlackRock. He thinks bond investors should remember three things when thinking about rising interest rates. 
1. "Beware the middle of the yield curve" - "We are practicing caution within the short to middle part of the Treasury curve and are underweight Treasury bonds with three- to seven-year maturities." 2. "The tails of the curve may provide more value" - Bonds with very short maturity are less likely to be impacted by Fed policy and those with longer maturity have done well so far this year. 3. "Consider tax-exempt munis and emerging market debt" - "We are currently overweight munis due to strong credit fundamentals, and are neutral to emerging market (EM) bonds overall."

But new data from Morningstar shows that PIMCO's Total Return Fund, the flagship fund managed by Gross, has fallen behind 85% of its competitors. New Delhi, Mar 15 () Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have withdrawn a whopping Rs 37,976 crore on a net basis from the Indian markets in March so far amid the coronavirus pandemic triggering fears of a global recession. Overseas investors pulled out a net sum of Rs 24,776.36 crore from equities and Rs 13,199.54 crore from the debt segment between Mar 2-13, depositories data showed. This translates into a total net outflow of Rs 37,975.90 crore during the period under review. Prior to this, foreign investors were net buyers for six consecutive months since September 2019. "The spread of coronavirus outbreak, which has now been declared a pandemic, and continued slowdown in the global economy, has created a vicious cycle which is consuming investors worldwide," said Himanshu Srivastava, senior analyst manager research, Morningstar Investment Adviser India. Global markets reeled last week after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, and expressed deep concern over the "alarming levels of inaction". Given the ongoing scenario, foreign investors have taken a flight to safer investment options, such as dollar denominated asset classes and gold as against fixed income securities of emerging markets like India, he added. Going forward, as coronavirus crosses boundaries and affects other countries, it may have a more serious impact on the already slowing global economy and on foreign flows into emerging markets such as India, Srivastava said. "The markets have been very volatile all over the globe. Many countries are expected to announce stimulus packages and tax breaks to support various industries as they deal with the effects of this virus' outbreak. Corona scare: FPIs press panic button, withdraw Rs 37,976 cr from Indian mkts

New Delhi, Dec 29 () Foreign investors remained net buyers in December by investing Rs 2,613 crore in the domestic markets, mainly due to expectation of a revival in corporate earning, quantitative easing by the US Fed and infusion of funds by central banks globally.
According to the depositories data, a net amount of Rs 6,301.96 crore was invested by foreign portfolio investors (FPI) into equities, while Rs 3,688.94 was pulled out of the debt segment.
This resulted into a total net investment of Rs 2,613.02 crore between Dec 2-27.
"Despite challenges on the economic front and policy roadblocks, FPIs continue to have faith in the Indian equity markets ...what has kept them hooked to the Indian equity markets is expectation of a revival in corporate earning in the coming quarter, quantitative easing by US Fed and infusion of funds by central banks globally," said Himanshu Srivastava, senior research analyst, manager research at Morningstar.
Barring January, July and August, FPIs have been net buyers for rest of the months in 2019. This year, they have invested a net sum of Rs 73,276.63 crore in the Indian markets (both equity and debt).
"In 2019, FPIs remained bullish on India on account of many factors including corporate tax rate cut, RERA, among others have helped in this regard. The valuations in the Indian stock markets were very high.
"Besides factors within India, international factors including lower interest rates in USA, near-zero interest rates in economies like Japan, and negative interest rates in parts of Europe are also driving investments into India," Harsh Jain, co-founder and COO, Groww said.
Regarding future course of FPI flows, Srivastava said there are few negative developments like recent political issues in India and re-emergence of trade war between US and China, which FPIs would be watchful of. While the government has taken several measures to revive the economy the results are yet to be seen. SRS

FPIs remain net buyers in December; invest over Rs 2,600 cr

New Delhi, Nov 19 () India-focussed offshore funds and ETFs witnessed a net outflow of USD 1.4 billion (over Rs 9,900 crore) in July-September period of this year, making it the sixth consecutive quarter of withdrawal, a report has said.
 India-focussed offshore funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) are a subset of the overall foreign portfolio investor (FPI) flows.
 Of the total outflows during the quarter under review, USD 1 billion was from India-focussed offshore funds, while USD 321 million was from India-focussed offshore ETFs, Morningstar Offshore Fund Spy report said.
 In the previous quarter, the net outflow from offshore funds and ETFs was USD 941 million. Over the last one year period ended September 2019, the category has witnessed net outflows of USD 5.2 billion, it added.
 India-focussed offshore funds and ETFs registered outflows for the sixth consecutive quarter.
 During June 2018 quarter, the net outflow was pegged at USD 2,218.48 million, while it was USD 1,840.46 million in September 2018 quarter, USD 1,459.90 million in December 2018 quarter, USD 1,407.92 million in March 2019 quarter and USD 941.49 million in June 2019 quarter.
 "Consistent net outflows dented the asset base of India-focussed offshore funds and ETFs. During the quarter, their assets fell to USD 49.1 billion from USD 52.9 billion recorded in the previous quarter," the report said.
 As per the report, all three segments -- large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap -- performed negatively during the quarter ended September.
 The S&amp;P BSE Sensex was down 1.85 per cent in September quarter, while S&amp;P BSE Midcap and S&amp;P BSE Smallcap indices were down 4.76 per cent and 7.50 per cent, respectively.
 The value of investment into Indian equities in foreign funds fell to an estimated USD 179 billion during the quarter ended September 2019 against USD 189 billion recorded in the previous quarter.
 All three categories -- global, emerging market and Asia/Asia-Pacific -- of regionally diversified equity funds and ETFs turned out to be net sellers of Indian equities for the quarter under review, it said. SRS RVK

India-focussed offshore funds, ETFs see withdrawal of USD 1.4 bn in Jul-Sep

New Delhi, May 11 () The number of proposals for new fund offers (NFOs) filed by mutual fund houses with markets regulator Sebi has been dwindling since past few months largely due to the nationwide lockdown and its impact on overall investor sentiment. Fund houses approached Sebi for as many as 11 NFOs in January, the number fell to six in February and further dropped to just one in March and nil in April. In May so far, the figure stands at two, according to the markets regulator. Since March, draft documents for only three new schemes have been filed. This comprises one by Nippon India MF in March and two by SBI MF in May and interestingly, all the three are passive funds. "The slowdown in March/April is largely related to the lockdown and its impact on overall investor sentiment," said Kaustubh Belapurkar, Director – Manager Research, Morningstar India. Jimmy Patel, MD and CEO, Quantum Mutual Fund said the industry is grappling with fixed income funds facing redemption pressure last month and the prevailing market conditions are not so encouraging either, which resulted in slowdown in NFO filing. "In COVID-19 era, there seems to be uncertainty on the survival and continuity of a lot of industries and business models. At this point in time, it is not a liquidity crisis but a crisis of confidence," Ashika Wealth Advisors Co-Founder and CEO Amit Jain said. So far in 2020, draft documents for 20 NFOs have been submitted with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). Of these, some of the schemes have already been launched after getting regulatory clearances. Of these 20 NFOs request filed with Sebi, a large chunk of these offerings are passive funds. Patel said passive funds have slowly gaining traction as such funds do not need minimum assets under management (AUM) and investor count, Patel said. Themes like exchange traded funds (ETFs) and environment social and governance (ESG) attracted of mutual fund companies. Besides, many mutual fund companies filed applications for index funds. Given the defined Sebi categories most fund companies are only looking to fill gaps in their active fund bouquets if any. "On the passive side there has been a fair bit of interest with a number of offerings around broader Index funds and ETFs as well as some thematic /sectoral ETFs. Another theme that is seeing interest is the ESG theme, which has been in the spotlight globally for a while now," Belapurkar said. "Fund companies are beefing up their product bouquets to be ready for the future where passive funds and ESG funds will play an increasingly important role in investor portfolios," he added. Jain said new fund offer shall increase once economic and financial stability is restored in the system. Nippon India MF, SBI MF, Aditya Birla Sunlife MF, DSP MF, BNP Paribas MF, UTI MF, Tata MF and HSBC MF are the fund houses that approached Sebi with the offer documents for NFOs.
