The job has at times required working <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-80-hours-per-week-needed-change-the-world-2018-11">120-hour weeks</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-said-he-slept-on-tesla-factory-floor-to-maximize-suffering-2018-7">sleeping on the floor</a> of the electric-car maker's California factory.<br /><br />But Musk's most unpleasant job came years before <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> was founded. During an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxmO_QuD4Do">interview</a> with the "Third Row Tesla" podcast, Musk said the worst job he's had involved cleaning boiler rooms in a lumber mill in Vancouver.<br /><br />As a teenager, Musk wanted to move to the US from <keyword id="6355117" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="south-africa">South Africa</keyword>, where he grew up, so he could work in the tech industry. Before making his way to the US, Musk moved to Montreal when he was 17 since he could get Canadian citizenship through his mother. After working on a wheat farm, Musk traveled to Vancouver, where he took a short-term job at a lumber mill.<br /><br />The position required him to shovel "steaming" sand and mulch out of a wood-pulp boiler, Musk said. A worker outside the boiler would then remove the sand and mulch from a tunnel leading into it.<br /><br />Musk said the job was dangerous, since each boiler had just one small tunnel as an entrance and exit. If the tunnel was full, it could spell trouble in an emergency.<br /><br />"It'd be really hard to drag somebody out," Musk said. "It does not seem safe because if the tunnel gets blocked, trying to unblock that tunnel would be very difficult in a short period of time."<br /><br />Musk added that the workers inside and outside of the boiler would switch positions every 15 minutes to avoid getting hyperthermia.<br /><br />The job lasted just four days, and paid around double the hourly rate Musk's other options offered.<br /><br />Musk would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-rise-of-elon-musk-2016-7#while-zip2-got-off-the-ground-musk-literally-lived-in-the-office-and-showered-at-a-local-ymca-the-hard-work-paid-off-when-compaq-bought-zip2-in-a-deal-worth-341-million-in-cash-and-stock-earningmusk-22-million-12">move to the US</a> a few years later to attend the <keyword id="83492" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-pennsylvania">University of Pennsylvania</keyword>. After graduating, he would found the online mapping startup Zip2, an online banking company that became PayPal, and the rocket company <keyword id="6360701" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="spacex">SpaceX</keyword>. Musk is now worth around $40 billion, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/">Bloomberg</a>. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>In advertising his companies on Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/elon-musk">CEO Elon Musk</a> wrote, "<span>There are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week."</span></li><li><span>Musk's comments, particularly about how you can't change the world working only 40 hours a week, couldn't be further from the truth.</span></li></ul><p><span>Elon Musk is notorious for working very long hours, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-employee-stories-elon-musk-sleeping-at-work-2018-8">getting very little sleep</a>.</span></p><p><span>He also thinks <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-80-hours-per-week-needed-change-the-world-2018-11">long work hours are necessary</a> to change the world.</span></p><p><span>In a series of tweets supporting his companies, Musk said, "There are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week."</span></p><p>Many on Twitter were quick to point out the errors in Musk's observation:</p><p>One woman was keen to point out the example of Alexander Fleming, a scientist who changed the world by going on vacation and accidentally leaving a petri dish open near a window, leading to the discovery of penicillin.</p><p>As so many on Twitter pointed out, changing the world has little to do with the volume of hours one works, and has everything to do with the impact and quality of that work. Countless people have changed the course of history without the requisite of working more than 40 hours every week. Though <a href="https://academic.oup.com/occmed/article/67/5/377/3859790">studies have shown</a> working more hours generally does lead to higher corporate positions, working more hours is also correlated with anxiety, depression, and worse sleep.</p><p>About one-third of US adults don't get enough sleep - and Musk could probably do with a little more sleep himself.&#xa0;<span>Back in 2015, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sleeps-6-hours-a-day-2015-1">he said in a Reddit AMA</a> that he sleeps "almost exactly 6 hours on average." Earlier this year, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/16/business/elon-musk-interview-tesla.html">he told The New York Times</a> that he often logs <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sleep-deprivation-damage-2018-8">120-hour weeks</a> at work, and doesn't leave Tesla's factories for days at a time. If his plan to reduce congestion via underground pods along the same right-of-way as freeways works out, the thousands stuck in crawling traffic this Thanksgiving would be sure to welcome the innovation.</p><p>Weather could make things worse, too. Still, any car not on a highway is welcome news for traffic jams.</p><p>Until then, you're better off leaving bright and early tomorrow morning for holiday travel - if you haven't already.
