<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Matt Cardy/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>On January 31, the full moon will be the second in a month, making it a blue moon; it'll be at the part of the moon's orbit that defines a supermoon; and there will be a total lunar eclipse.</strong></li><li><strong>The total lunar eclipse is the most exciting for astronomers - it can give the moon a reddish tint, which is why it's sometimes called a blood moon.</strong></li><li><strong>To catch the eclipse, you'll need to look up at a certain time: early in the morning in the US, or later that night in other parts of the world.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Early in the morning on January 31 - if you are in the right part of the world - you'll be able to look up at the sky and see what you could call a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-super-blue-blood-moon-eclipse-on-january-31-2018-1">super blue blood moon</a>."</p><p>That's a full moon happening at the part of the moon's orbit that's closest to Earth (known as a supermoon). This will also be the second full moon of a calendar month, which is commonly referred to as a blue moon <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/super-blue-blood-moon-coming-jan-31">by NASA and others</a>.</p><p>Most excitingly, in certain parts of the world it'll be possible to see a total lunar eclipse, which can give the moon a reddish hue when the Earth comes between the sun and our satellite, hence the name "blood moon."</p><p>The last time all three of these events happened at the same time was almost 152 years ago. But terms like these can make these occurrences seem more dramatic than they are. Because of where the moon is in its orbit, this full moon will be about 14% brighter than normal - whether or not that qualifies as super is up to you (maybe the moon is always super). And blue moon is not a technical astronomical term - in fact, a different <a href="http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/celestial-objects-to-watch/what-is-a-blue-moon/">historical definition</a> by the Farmer's Almanac would make that phenomenon more rare than NASA's definition.</p><p>But the lunar eclipse component of these three aligned events is fascinating for astronomers, since the rapid temperature changes that occur when the Earth blocks the direct light of the sun can reveal new aspects of the moon's surface.</p><p>"The whole character of the moon changes when we observe with a thermal camera during an eclipse," Paul Hayne of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder, wrote in a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2018/what-scientists-can-learn-about-the-moon-during-the-jan-31-eclipse">feature on the upcoming eclipse</a>. "In the dark, many familiar craters and other features can't be seen, and the normally nondescript areas around some craters start to 'glow,' because the rocks there are still warm."</p><p>This information could also reveal potential landing sites for future moon expeditions.</p><h2>When and where to look</h2><p>To catch the eclipse, you'll need to look up at the right time: early in the morning in North America and the Eastern Pacific, evening for those in the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. (Most of Europe will unfortunately miss this part of the show.)</p><p>During a lunar eclipse, the moon transitions into partial shadow - penumbra - before going into full shadow - umbra - then back into penumbra, as seen in the graphic below.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/stories/umbra-and-penumbra">NASA</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The reddish color it takes on has to do with the way that Earth's atmosphere breaks up light - much of the blue gets filtered out before the remaining light makes its way to the moon.</p><p>Viewers on the East Coast of the US will only be able to see the start of the time when the darker "umbra" of Earth's shadow covers the moon, at about 6:48 a.m., since the sun will rise shortly after that.</p><p>In the western US, the show will be better. For those on central time, NASA reports that the best viewing will be from about 6:15 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., with Earth's reddish shadow clearly visible on the moon before the sun comes up. Mountain time viewers will be able to catch the peak of eclipse at 6:30 a.m. local time. <p>Norton started his monologue great on his own and at the 1:45 mark, Baldwin made an entrance to give tips on how to deliver a better one. Cyrus then came out to give more tips on hosting and to announce a tour to her fans.</p>
<p>Overall, though the episode made <a href="http://www.hulu.com/watch/550566?playlist_id=1031&amp;asset_scope=all" target="_blank">obvious reference to one of Norton's latest movies</a>, "Moonrise Kingdom," SNL failed to make use of Norton's one-time appearance as the Hulk in 2008 - he was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in "The Avengers - and his cult classic "Fight Club." Either had the potential to be great sketch material.</p>

Here's what's coming to Netflix in September

<p>The "Moonrise Kingdom" actress was on <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music-arts/tilda-swinton-surprises-moma-visitors-sleeping-installation-article-1.1297328" target="_blank">display at the MoMa in New York City Saturday</a> as part of an exhibit.</p>
<p><a href="http://instagram.com/p/XNZ6nVju9s/" target="_blank">"The Maybe"</a> showcased Swinton sleeping in a glass box for the day with a mattress, pillow, linen, water, and spectacles.</p>
<p class="p1"><a href="http://gothamist.com/2013/03/23/photos_tilda_swinton_is_sleeping_in.php" target="_blank">The Gothamist</a> reports <span>Swinton has been talking with the MoMa about showcasing this exhibit since 2005,</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> and that it</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> will run several more times throughout the year, </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"each unannounced and in a different location in the Museum."</span></p>
<p class="p1">This isn't the first time the 52-year-old Academy Award winner has slept in public. </p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Swinton first performed "<a href="http://www.frithstreetgallery.com/artists/works/cornelia_parker/2/the_maybe" target="_blank">The Maybe</a>" in 1995 at the Serpentine Gallery in London.</span></p>

Tilda Swinton Slept In A Glass Box At The Museum Of Modern Art

<p>We've been regularly bombarded with images of the Earth from above, thanks to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-pictures-videos-from-chris-hadfield-2013-5">Commander Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station</a>, and the dozens of Earth-observing satellites circling our planet, but it's not too often we see an image of the moon from space. </p>
<p>The ISS hovers 250 miles above Earth, so it also has a spectacular view of our closest celestial neighbor. </p>
<p>Luckily ISS commander <span>Maxim Suraev just published this fabulous shot to <a href="http://instagram.com/p/uqa6POJR4q/?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_medium=embed&amp;utm_campaign=photo">the Roscosmos Instagram feed</a>. He caught the moon on a cloudy day, so you can see the peaks from the fluffy clouds below. You can see the out-stretched shadows cast by, what appears to be, a couple of cumulonimbus clouds, with the lonely moon floating in the background.</span></p>

<p>This last image depicts a distant Moon, with just a small portion reflecting the sunlight. To observers on Earth, this would appear to be a crescent Moon. The ominous bright-blue band closing in on the Moon is Earth's atmosphere. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>The Perseids are a meteor shower that occurs each year in late summer.</strong></li><li><strong>This year, the astronomical event peaks August 11-13.</strong></li><li><strong>A bright moon will make seeing the meteors more challenging, but NASA says stargazers can expect to see one every couple of minutes.</strong></li></ul><p>Right now Earth is plowing through a cloud of tiny bits of comet dust, turning the rice-grain-size debris into what many call shooting stars.</p><p>Known as the Perseid meteor shower, this recurring astronomical event is easily the most-watched - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stunning-perseid-meteor-shower-photos-from-around-the-world-2015-8">and beautiful</a> - shower of every year.</p><p>The Perseids in 2017 run from July 13 until August 26; they peak in the late evening and early morning hours of August 11, 12, and 13, according to <a href="http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-perseid-meteor-shower" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">EarthSky.org</a>.</p><p>Some websites have claimed that there will be more meteors visible per minute this year than any other time in nearly a century, but experts say this is hogwash.</p><p>"This year, we are expecting enhanced rates of about 150 per hour or so, but the increased number will be cancelled out by the bright Moon, the light of which will wash out the fainter Perseids," Bill Cooke, who leads NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, wrote in <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/Watch_the_Skies/2017/08/03/the-greatest-meteor-show-of-all-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">an August 3 blog post</a>. "A meteor every couple of minutes is good, and certainly worth going outside to look, but it is hardly the 'brightest shower in human history.'"</p><h2>How to watch</h2><p>This year's conditions will be challenging for two reasons.</p><p>First, there'll be a waning gibbous moon - the full moon will have just ended, but it will still be full and bright.</p><p>Second, the moon will rise in the evening and set near dawn. Normally the best time to watch for meteors is after the moon sets. Find a dark, remote spot away from the light pollution of nearby towns and cities, make yourself comfortable, and set aside a good chunk of time to enjoy the show.</p><p>"Give yourself at least an hour of viewing time for watching any meteor shower," <a href="http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-eta-aquarid-meteor-shower#when-how">EarthSky.org advises</a>. "Meteors tend to come in spurts that are interspersed by lulls. Also, it can take as long as 20 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark."</p><p>Perseids meteors are bright and fast, and they often leave persistent trains - the bright streaks that linger in the sky. They are best seen from the northern hemisphere. The meteors travel at the mind-numbing speed of 132,000 miles per hour - 500 times faster than the fastest car in the world.</p><h2>What causes a meteor shower?</h2><p>When a comet swings too close to the sun, the sun's light boils its icy surface, releasing particles of ice and dust.</p><p>This debris coming off the comet forms a tail that points away from the sun. As Earth crosses the orbit of this comet, we pass through the tail:</p><p><br>The gravity of our planet attracts the dust and ice that the comet has left in its wake. When that debris is pulled into our atmosphere, it rubs up against air molecules, causing it to burn up and streak through the sky.</br></p><p>That process results in the glowing trails of light that we see as meteors, or "shooting stars."</p><p>The comet producing the meteors in the Perseids is <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/multimedia/gallery/iss028e024847.html">Swift-Tuttle</a>, a 16-mile-wide hunk of space rock that takes 133 years to orbit the sun. It's the largest object in our solar system that makes <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-the-persieds-august-meteor-shower-2015-8">repeated close approaches to Earth</a>.</p><p>The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but if you trace their paths back, they all appear to come from the same point, called the radiant. That's because the meteors are all approaching us at the same angle.</p><p>Meteor showers are all named after their radiant - the apparent point in the sky that the meteors come from. <p>It's that time of year again! For those in North America, the Harvest Moon will look brightest and fullest at sunset on Monday night, Sept. 8.</p>
<p>The Harvest Moon is the name for the full moon that is closest to the autumnal equinox, or the official start of fall, on Sept. 22. Traditionally, every full moon has special nickname that says something about the season or time of year in which it appears. For example, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-february-snow-moon-2013-2">Snow Moon</a> happens in February during winter and the Flower Moon is in May during spring. Before electricity, moonlight was crucial for farmers who had to work after sundown, especially in early autumn when many crops are ready to be harvested. For that reason, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox was called the "Harvest Moon." The Harvest Moon can come either two weeks before or two weeks the autumnal equinox. This year it's a bit early.</p>
<p>But the Harvest Moon is special for another reason. Typically, the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day throughout the year. But when the full moon occurs near the fall equinox, the gaps between moonrises are shorter. The moon rises only about 30 minutes later each night, appearing at sunset. This has to do with the moon's path, which makes a narrow angle with the horizon at the beginning of autumn. Not only does the moon rise earlier than usual in the evening, but this happens for several nights in a row - before and after the full moon - resulting in three consecutive days of the moon appearing at nearly the same time.</p>
<p>Both of these events give the illusion that the Harvest Moon is bigger, brighter, and closer, even though it's not. The moon is simply closest to the horizon at sunset, when most people are looking for the Harvest Moon. This year, the <a href="http://earthsky.org/space/harvest-moon-2#" target="_blank">Harvest Moon will appear even bigger than usual because it's a supermoon</a>, "when "the moon turns full less than one day after reaching lunar perigee - the moon's closest point to Earth for the month," according to EarthSky.</p>
<p>Also, when the moon is near the horizon, it must pass through more dust and cloud particles that scatter blue light and only let red pass through. That's why the Harvest Moon usually looks yellow, orange, or red.</p>

<p><span><span></span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">From "The Royal Tenenbaums" to "Moonrise Kingdom," Murray has appeared in every single one of Wes Anderson's films, with the exception of Anderson's first film <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115734/" target="_blank">"Bottle Rocket"</a> in 1996.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">But taking a chance on starring in 1998's "Rushmore" </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">-</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> Anderson's second feature film ever </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">-</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> has paid off for Murray, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for the role. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Well, eventually it did at least. But it didn't at first.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.vulture.com/2013/10/wes-anderson-collection-24-tidbits-matt-zoller-seitz.html" target="_blank">Seitz reveals</a> that Murray made a measly $9,000 for his leading role in "Rushmore."</p>
<p>"He got a piece of the profits, but his day rate was Screen Actors Guild minimum," Seitz <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2013/10/wes-anderson-collection-24-tidbits-matt-zoller-seitz.html" target="_blank">explains to Vulture</a>. "By Anderson's estimate, Murray made about $9,000 from acting in 'Rushmore.'"</p>
<p>Seitz further explains that Disney didn't want to pay for a helicopter shot for "Rushmore's" "A Quick One While He's Away" montage, so Murray wrote a check to cover the costs of a chopper rental.</p>
<p><span>"The helicopter shot ended up being cut from the film anyway, but Anderson still has Murray's un-cashed check for $25,000, $16,000 more than he was paid for acting in the movie," Seitz says in his new book.</span></p>
<p><span>When Anderson was asked about his relationship with Murray last year, the writer/director <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/24/wes-anderson-moonrise-kingdom-interview-bill-murray_n_1543463.html" target="_hplink">told HuffPost Entertainment</a>: </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span><span>"When we did 'Rushmore,' in the very beginning, it could have been intimidating, but he made it not intimidating. </span><span>As soon as we started working together, I would say something to him and he would respond with something that made me think, 'Not only does he understand what I'm saying, he seems to like it and has expanded on it.' [...] He made it real; it was funny, but he made it real. I've always felt like I've enjoyed that rapport so much."</span></span></span></p>
<p><span><span>Murray, for his part, agrees, saying in a <a href="http://cooldirectors.imess.net/Wes%20Anderson/interview_with_bill_murray.htm" target="_hplink">1999 interview</a>:</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span><span><span>"I've liked most of the characters I've played, but writing-wise they weren't all finished. I think 'Rushmore' is the first movie I've done in a while that's completely whole. </span><span>'Groundhog Day' was another that was exceptionally well-written. With 'Rushmore,' it was great to be able to serve the story without waving a flag over my head, which you often have to do when you're the lead and have to carry the film. So I enjoyed playing Blume because I really believe an actor's job is to serve."</span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span>But apparently Anderson is lucky he can even contact Murray to discuss projects.</span></p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2013/10/bill-murray-rushmore" target="_blank">Vanity Fair</a>, the 63-year-old actor "<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">relies on a mythical 1-800 phone number to screen projects. On the off chance that a filmmaker does manage to track down said number, convince Murray to take part in his/her project, and lure him to his/her set, the unpredictable comedian-actor can apparently be extremely supportive, even taking substantial pay cuts and offering up his own funds if he believes enough in a project."</span></p>

Here's The Measly Amount Bill Murray Made For 'Rushmore' Because He's Awesome

<p>The tracks -- which include vibrant alternate versions of such Williams classics as "Hey, Good Lookin'," "Cold, Cold Heart," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "I Can't Help It" and "I Saw the Light" -- are owned by Williams' heirs, country singers Hank Williams Jr. and his half-sister Jett Williams. Though it's been 60 years since hard-living singer-songwriter Williams died in the back seat of a Cadillac en route to a show in Canton, Ohio, the appetite for his music in Hollywood has remained hearty.</p>
<p>In recent years, masters of Williams' Sterling and MGM studio recordings -- held by Universal Music Group -- have been used in features including "Seven Psychopaths," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Rango," "Zombieland" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," and on TV skeins including "Vegas," "Cold Case," "The Wire" and "Six Feet Under."</p>
<p>Nashville attorney F. Keith Adkinson, who is married to Jett Williams and represents the estate, said of the estate-held material, "We are trying to do some multimedia marketing, make it available to people."</p>
<p>The material being made available includes 73 15-minute shows recorded at Nashville radio station WSM in 1951 for the Mother's Best Flour company; eight 12-minute "Health &amp; Happiness" shows cut at WSM in October 1949; and concerts recorded at Niagara Falls, N.Y., in May 1952 and Sunset Park, Penn., in July 1952.</p>
<p>These rare recordings took a winding path to the marketplace. Their ownership was in dispute until a 2006 appellate court decision gave the Williamses rights to the Mother's Best recordings. After they were discarded when WSM moved offices in 1961, acetate disc recordings of the shows were rescued from a Dumpster by former station photographer and Williams fan Les Leverett.</p>
<p>In 1982 Leverett sold the discs to onetime Drifting Cowboys bassist Hillous Butrum, who licensed them to a Texas firm, Legacy Entertainment Group (not to be confused with Sony Music's latter-day catalog arm Legacy Recordings).</p>
<p>After Legacy began marketing Mother's Best packages on regional TV, Polygram Records (which merged with UMG in 1999) and the Williams estate sued the company; after years in the courts, the 2006 appellate decision upheld an award of the Mother's Best titles to Jett and Hank Williams, Jr. Adkinson said, "Once I won the lawsuit that determined that the only thing that the record labels had were the masters of the songs that Hank recorded in a studio, that brought to Junior and Jett the Health &amp; Happiness and Mother's Best (shows), concerts and anything else we could turn up... Once the court decision came down, we had a lot of suitors who wanted to have access to the materials. The one that stood out was Time-Life."</p>
<p>An agreement with Time-Life Records led to a series of CD releases that brought most of the Williams rarities to listeners for the first time. Highlights from the Mother's Best shows were issued on two three-CD packages in 2008-09; a complete 15-CD box was released in 2010. The Health &amp; Happiness shows - first issued on CD by Polygram in 1993 -- were re-released on "The Legend Begins" in 2011, while the New York and Pennsylvania shows were heard on "The Lost Concerts" last October.</p>
<p>The radio recordings received a sonic upgrade with remastering for the Time-Life releases. Jett Williams said, "The fidelity of the Mother's Best (recordings) has been rated as better than some of the masters."</p>
<p>The Williams estate recordings include a number of gems Hank Sr. never cut in the studio -- some 50 tracks ranging from a wealth of gospel material to his renditions of such country standards as "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Cool Water."</p>
<p>While there is little surviving audio of the country luminary from his late '40s-early '50s heyday, the WSM radio shots include homespun banter by Williams. Jett Williams notes, "We've got him talking...If you're (making) a commercial, you can have Hank Williams saying, 'Hey, good lookin'.' It's not just the song."</p>
<p>But the singer's daughter added that the vitality of the estate's recordings -- especially the Mother's Best shows, which were widely praised by critics on their release -- is what sets them apart from the better-known studio sides. "When he did these recordings," Jett Williams said, "He was at the top of his game. He was singing like his life depended on it."</p>

She died in 1989.</p>

<p>While Ben Affleck was snubbed for a director nod at the Oscars, he got a double dose of vindication when he and the film scored victories for Best Director and Best Picture, Drama. "I don't care what the award is," he said while accepting the directing statue. He then thanked his wife, actress Jennifer Garner, for "sitting through this."</p>
<p>Lena Dunham, Daniel Day-Lewis, and "Les Misérables" also won big, while Sofia Vergara and "The Newsroom" came up short.</p>
