The Union government had launched the PM SVANidhi scheme on June 1 to help poor <keyword id="466152" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="street-vendors">street vendors</keyword> impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic resume livelihood activities. Appealing street vendors to come forward to adopt the digital system, Modi said, "A new beginning has been made by the banks and digital payment system providers." Modi told the street vendors that representatives of banks and such organisations will reach out to them, provide the QR code and inform them about its use. "I appeal to them (street vendors) to use digital payment more and present an example before the world,"he said. He said the government will make efforts to ensure that street vendors in all big cities of the state get benefit of the PM SVANidhi scheme. "Whenever there is a pandemic, it hits the poor brothers and sisters hard. They always suffer whether it is excessive heat, rainfall or cold and these create problems for their employment and food, Modi said. "They (the poor) faced it the most during the pandemic and were even were forced to return to their native places. The government has realised this and tried to help them as much as possible by providing them ration and creating employment opportunities," he said. The government launched the PM SVANidhi scheme with easy rules so that they can get rid of paying interest on loans which they used to take from private lenders. "You are getting a rebate of seven per cent in interest in these loans (under the scheme). If you repay to the bank on time, you will get more facilities. If you make digital transaction, you will get rewarded for it and you get more loan next time, he said. Referring to attempts made earlier to remove poverty, Modi said, "In our country, a lot has been talked about the poor. But in the last six years, everything has been done in a planned manner. Steps have been taken, which were not taken earlier, like the Jan Dhan Yojna under which 40 crore bank accounts of poor people were opened." These people are getting loans and are liberated from the clutches of money lenders. Farmers are getting assistance directly, he mentioned. He also said that soon villages will also be associated with online marketing platforms. "On August 15, we took a vow to connect all villages with the optical fibre network in next 1,000 days. People will also get digital health identity cards for getting health facilities in rural areas also," he said. Earlier, he interacted with some beneficiaries of the PM SVANidhi scheme, including street vendor Chaganlal and his wife from Sanver in Indore district, Gwalior's Archana Sharma and vegetable vendor Dalchand in Raisen district. Modi advised Chaganlal how to enhance his business by asking customers to return the pipe used in making broomsticks to reduce the cost of making a broomstick. Chaganlal also told Modi that he wanted to enhance his business. After spotting a plastic water bottle kept behind Chaganlal's chair, Modi advised him to use an earthen pitcher instead of a single-use plastic bottle for drinking water to save the environment. New Delhi, Nov 25 () Two landscapes by modernist artist Syed Haider Raza --"Paysage" and "La Terre 3", painted in 1960 and 1970 respectively, will go under the hammer at Saffronart's Winter Online Auction on December 9-10.
"Paysage", estimated at Rs 2.45 - 3.15 crore, was painted a decade after the artist moved to France and represents a period when his style was shifting towards the gestural. 
This will be the first time that the work will appear in an auction. 
"Influenced by the abstract or non-figurative artistic expression gaining popularity at the time, as well as Raza's extensive travels through the French countryside, this unrestrained work celebrates colour and texture," Saffronart said in a statement on Monday.
"La Terre 3", which represents a more fluid style, was painted during a time when Raza's early experiences in India were beginning to increasingly manifest in his work. 
"The deeper, contrasting palette of this oil on canvas painting evokes the darkness of night and the dense forests of Raza's hometown in Madhya Pradesh, juxtaposed with brighter tones signifying colour and life," the auction house said.
The painting is estimated at Rs 2 - 3 crore. 
"The highlights of our Winter Online Auction are two significant, distinctive works by S H Raza, representing turning points in his oeuvre. 
"Poised between his past and present, they provide a glimpse into the artist's influences, including abstract art movements, travel and memory," Dinesh Vazirani, Saffronart's CEO and Co-Founder, said.
Also part of the sale will be Jagdish Swaminathan's Untitled work from the 1970s that represents his famous "Bird, Mountain, Tree" series. 
It was part of the private collection of the Amar Mahal Museum in Jammu, which was founded in 1975 by politician Karan Singh and his wife with the aim of furthering and preserving Indian art and literature. 
The work is estimated at Rs 1 - 1.5 crores.
An Untitled work by Prabhakar Barwe, estimated at Rs 50 - 70 lakh, which was part of a major retrospective of the artist at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi earlier this year, will also go under the hammer.
Unique and striking sculptures by B Prabha, Sadanand Bakre, K G Subramanyan , S Nandagopal are also part of the auction.
The auction also includes 22 works of contemporary Indian art from the collection of London-based Saatchi Gallery, which will be offered at 'no reserve' (artworks will be sold regardless of price). 
These works were part of a ground-breaking exhibition of contemporary Indian art in Europe, titled The Empire Strikes Back, at Saatchi Gallery in 2010.
Among these will be L N Tallur's untitled work that is composed of torn and battered mattresses stacked on a hospital bed and is suggestive of the agonising conditions of hard labour. It is estimated at Rs 10.5 - 14 lakh.
Jitish Kallat's "Death of Distance" (2007) featuring a monumental one-rupee coin and five lenticular prints that highlight the unequal and disparate value of money for different strata of society, is also part of the sale.
It is estimated at Rs 8.4 - 10.5 lakh. 
"This (no reserve auction) will provide a wonderful opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors to own work by leading artists such as Tallur L N and Jitish Kallat," Vazirani said.

<ul><li>The only non-government appointed members of the National Statistical Commission have quit.</li><li>The resigning members allege that <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> government has withheld key employment data.</li><li>The undisclosed report would have been India’s first official survey on employment in 2 years.</li></ul> Two independent members of a commission created to add credibility to India’s economic data have stepped down. On January 29th, Chairman PC Manohan and JV Meenakshi - the only external members of India’s National Statistics Commission, a body under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation - resigned well before the end of their terms scheduled <a href="http://www.mospi.gov.in/present-composition-nsc">in June next year</a>. The body only comprises government appointees - Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant and Chief Statistician Pravin Srivastava. Their reasons for resigning? They did not like the way the government shelved their data. An official employment survey done in 2017-18 was vetted by the Commission and is due to be published. But the government has chosen not to make it public. Sources told <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/nsc-members-feel-sidelined-by-govt-resign-on-row-over-jobs-gdp-data-119012901079_1.html">Business Standard </a>that the labour force survey had been approved in December 2018, but had been withheld from public because the government did not like the findings. The <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> data, surveyed by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), would have put to rest an escalated debate on the number of jobs created, which has been the Achilles heel for the Modi government. The <a href="https://www-firstpost-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.firstpost.com/business/indias-missing-employment-data-we-arent-better-off-as-a-nation-living-in-the-dark-about-job-scenario-4381419.html/amp?usqp=mq331AQCCAE%3D&amp;_js_v=0.1#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&amp;_tf=From%20%251%24s&amp;ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.firstpost.com%2Fbusiness%2Findias-missing-employment-data-we-arent-better-off-as-a-nation-living-in-the-dark-about-job-scenario-4381419.html">last time</a> India released an official labour survey was in 2016, which showed that <keyword id="6358907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword> had risen to a five-year high to 5%. Periodic employment surveys from the NSSO, which were discontinued in 2012, were <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Opinion/J0BRzNjeZdGQRvItX3HWjM/Solving-the-mystery-of-missing-employment-data-in-the-Indian.html">deemed</a> as the most authoritative source on India’s unemployment picture, followed by the annual surveys conducted by the country’s labour bureau. All other job data proxies are said to be at best a reflection of under 10% to 25% of the country’s labour force, according to a Mint report in 2018. The administration has been sparring with its critics for months now dismissing the charge that the government has not been able to create jobs in the country, despite what the overall economic growth might be. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), an independent think tank, recently found that <a href="https://www.cmie.com/kommon/bin/sr.php?kall=warticle&amp;dt=2019-01-08%2009:28:37&amp;msec=666">11 million</a> domestic jobs were lost in 2018, 9.1 million of which were in rural areas, as unemployment reached a 15-month high of 7.4% at the end of December. Most of the jobs were for unskilled workers, indicating a hit to the most vulnerable members of the workforce, according to the CMIE. In fact, in September last year, Mahesh Vyas, the CEO of CMIE, said that over <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/business/economy/cmies-mahesh-vyas-says-3-5-million-jobs-lost-due-to-demonetisation-5357295/">3.5 million jobs </a>were lost in the wake of demonetisation in November 2016, in addition to the exodus of 15 million people from the workforce. However, the government cited data from the Employee Provident Fund Organisation -- which runs the retirement benefits fund-- to say that it had created <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/over-18-million-new-jobs-in-15-months-to-november-2018-cso/articleshow/67697413.cms">18 million jobs</a> over the last 15 months. Critics of the Modi government argue that the EPFO data at best shows the level of formal employment, whereas <a href="https://www.newsclick.in/nearly-81-indias-employed-population-informal-economy">81% </a>of India’s workforce is in the informal sector where there are no retirement benefits. The jobs data is only one of the concerns raised by the independent members of the <keyword id="65834" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSC">NSC</keyword> who stepped down. They also reportedly complained against the government’s release <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-bjp-led-government-has-released-a-set-of-revised-gdp-data-that-dramatically-reduces-growth-during-the-previous-administrations-tenure/articleshow/66861828.cms">of back-series GDP data </a>in November without taking their inputs into consideration. The back-series data was particularly controversial because it dramatically reduced the growth rate achieved during the preceding Congress administration’s tenure. The report was released ahead of the state polls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Speaking to Business Standard, Pronab Sen, India's former chief statistician, said that the resignation of Manohan and Meenakshi was "entirely appropriate", given that the NSC is meant to add credibility to data released by the government. Rivals have charged the government for not respecting institutional autonomy. While critics wonder how bad the jobs data might be, for the government to put it aside without explanation. Now, the Modi government has a monumental task of reassuring its voters and the world that the data released from India is credible. One of the ways to do it is to release the jobs data catching dust on the government shelves. <keyword id="905742" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi-led-government">Narendra Modi-led government</keyword> is planning for a speedy rollout of <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword> services across top 25 Indian cities by June 2015 states a PTI report. 
 
An official source, disclosing the information to the leading news agency, had said, "Government has plans to empanel 3-4 Wi-Fi service providers for speedy roll out of Wi-Fi hotspots across top 25 cities in the country by June 2015. The services will be available at select public places within these cities.” 
 Expansion of Internet services is one of the major steps that will take place under the BJP government’s ‘<keyword id="1929810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Digital-India">Digital India</keyword>’ initiative. By December 2015, the new government at the Centre aims to cover cities with population of over 1 million and tourist destinations with Wi-Fi services. 
 The <keyword id="62528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecom">Department of Telecom</keyword> and <keyword id="162100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Urban-Development">Ministry of Urban Development</keyword> have joined hands to enhance Internet connectivity in India. 
 According to the PTI report, the central government has also separately identified 25 archaeological monuments to provide free Wi-Fi access, which includes: Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Qutub Complex in Delhi, <keyword id="6355354" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Taj-Mahal">Taj Mahal</keyword>, Fatehpur Sikri Sravasti and Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram, Vaishali-Kohua in Bihar, Martand Temple and Leh Palace in J&amp;K, Konark Temple in Odisha, Rani-ki Vav Gujarat, Khajuraho and Mandu in Madhya Pradesh and Rang Ghar in Assam.
