<keyword id="1461153" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="monty-norman" source="Orion">Monty Norman</keyword>, the man who designed the iconic <keyword id="17991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="james-bond" source="Orion">James Bond</keyword> theme, passed away at the age of 94. He is survived by his second wife, Rina Caesari, and a daughter, reports 'Variety'. A statement posted on his official website, accessed by 'Variety', said, "It is with sadness we share the news that Monty <keyword id="249993" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="norman" source="Orion">Norman</keyword> died on 11th July 2022 after a short illness." Norman most famously composed the score for '<keyword id="27546" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dr-No" source="Orion">Dr. No</keyword>', the 1962 James Bond film starring Sean Connery. His theme for James Bond, as arranged by fellow Englishman John Barry, would go on to become the theme for the entire franchise. As Norman said on his site: "We recognised we needed a fresh, contemporary sound for the main theme, and in the up-and-coming young John Barry we found a wonderful arranger, so the whole thing worked very well." As per 'Variety', however, controversy erupted decades later when Barry claimed authorship of the theme, resulting in Norman suing the <keyword id="707915" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="times-of-london" source="Orion">Times of London</keyword> for libel over a 1997 story ('Theme Tune Wrangle Has 007 Shaken and Stirred') disputing Norman's contention that he was the true <keyword id="6493963" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Composer" source="Orion">composer</keyword>. A jury in London's High Court ruled in Norman's favour in 2001, awarding him 30,000 pounds plus court costs. Norman later said he felt vindicated by the decision. Norman was a former big band singer who turned songwriter in the late 1950s. He enjoyed a West End hit in 1958 with 'Irma La Douce', adapted from an earlier successful French musical. Producer Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli, an investor in Norman's short-lived 1961 musical 'Belle', called him to accompany the team headed to Jamaica in January 1962 to shoot 'Dr. No'. Cooling said his statement wasn't problematic because the NCO wasn't offended by it. She is now vice president of programs at Brady, an anti-gun-violence organization.Hunter said she was fortunate to have commanders that believed in her abilities and demanded she be treated with respect. But Cooling's comments about woman Marine pilots were "on the super extreme side of anything I've heard," Hunter told INSIDER."It's really unconscionable that it's that bad. Being a Marine Corps pilot is a hard job. It's a job that … you have to take risks. You have to be bold. You have to be good at what you do," Hunter said. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Amazon</div></div></div><ul><li>In "A Very English Scandal," available on Amazon Prime starting Friday, Hugh Grant plays Jeremy Thorpe, a real-life British politician put on trial for allegedly conspiring to murder his former lover, Norman Scott.</li><li>Grant told Business Insider that, while he believes Thorpe was guilty, he found sympathy for him because he lived in a time when his sexuality wasn't accepted in society. </li><li>Grant, who was a student at Oxford during the scandal in the late 70s, said that at the time, it was unfortunately the source of "schoolboy" jokes throughout Britain. </li></ul>Hugh Grant says that the "tragedy" of being a gay man in a world that refused to accept it helped him have more sympathy for his character - politician Jeremy Thorpe - in "A Very English Scandal," which drops on Amazon Prime Friday. At a New York City tea hosted by Amazon in June, Grant sat down with Business Insider and other journalists to discuss the series. The series, which is based on a true story and poignant event in British history, follows Thorpe in the decade following an affair in the early 1960s with Norman Scott (played by Ben Whishaw). Norman is openly gay and tells people about his affair with Thorpe. But in the series, Thorpe goes out of his way and uses his privileged position to prevent it from getting out in the press, and eventually conspires to have Norman killed. Grant said that Thorpe, though corrupt, "incredibly spoiled," and in Grant's opinion guilty of conspiring to murder his ex-lover (Grant compared Thorpe's acquittal to O.J. Simpson's), is a tragic figure because he hid his sexuality for his entire life. Grant says this helped make his performance sympathetic, even though his character was awful in many ways. "The tragedy of being unable to express your own sexual nature, and especially not being able to love someone in that context ... I think we kind of hit at that," Grant said. "[Thorpe] probably was in love with Norman Scott back at the beginning. Because of the law and social mores, he was either unable to let that develop with him or with anyone else in his whole lifetime. Even though he loves his wives, he was never able to really be himself. So I found that tragedy rather sympathetic."Grant, who mentioned that he's met men like Thorpe who still exist today in British politics, said that he prepared for the role by reading books about Thorpe and the scandal, talking to people who knew him (some who said he "couldn't hurt a fly, and some called him a "monster"), and by watching footage of Thorpe on YouTube. In his research, Grant learned that Thorpe lived an "extraordinary double life." Grant also remembers the scandal, but not fondly - he was 18 or 19 and at Oxford at the time."I'm afraid it was just a source of great schoolboy jokes," Grant said. "For the whole nation it was schoolboy jokes. And it was too good to be true. It was like Monty Python, here with this member of the establishment, ex-Oxford and Eaton, very well connected, on trial with his lover saying, 'and then I had to bite the pillow.' And the Vaseline, I mean, the jokes, there were thousands of jokes ... 'join the liberal party and widen your circle.' Those high-pitched strings in the score? You've heard them before, at the opening of Toxic, then repeated throughout the song. It's this musical number, "Tere Mere Beech Mein," that's the source of "Toxic"'s unmistakable hook and riff and a lot of the song's intensity. Manasi Prasad: "Tere Mere Beech Mein," it's from a classic film called "Ek Duuje Ke Liye." Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: This is Manasi Prasad, a classical Carnatic vocalist with an encyclopedic knowledge of Indian music. Manasi Prasad: This song is actually based on an Indian classical rāga, or melody. It's ♪ La la la ♪ ♪ La la la la la la ♪ ♪ La la ♪ So you'll find a lot of other Indian songs which are in this rāga. It's used to convey feelings of very intense emotions. I think one of the reasons why, you know, Bollywood songs work so well is the range or the pitch of the songs tends to be really high, and it brings an intensity and a brightness. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: Britney's team of songwriters, led by hit maker Cathy Dennis, took two tiny sections of the musical number and expertly merged those two sections together. ["Tere Mere Beech Mein"] ["Tere Mere Beech Mein"] ["Toxic"] Adam Ragusea: There's a string hook that's got the low, fast part, which is the ♪ Bum bum ba da da da dum ba da da dum ♪ and then there's a very high keening part that goes ♪ Da da ba ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: This is Adam Ragusea, a writer and YouTuber who's also a classically trained composer. That second part of the hook that Adam just sang? It starts on a superhigh F sharp, a note that lies far outside the song's key of C minor, making the whole thing sound disorienting. Adam Ragusea: That screaming F-sharp note makes the whole thing sound cinematic and scary in a fun way, like an action film. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: There's definitely something that sounds dangerous in that string sample. This has a lot to do with the film it was lifted from, a tale of forbidden romance. Manasi Prasad: It was a story about these star-crossed lovers. They fell in love, and it was opposed by their families, so both of them ended up dying at the end of the movie. So it's kind of a really tragic, intense love story. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: In the movie, love is danger, and that's reflected in the music, especially in the glissandos, these sliding figures in the strings, which are pretty much the signature of "Toxic"'s sampled hook. They sound slippery and precarious, which fits since Britney's singing about slipping under and falling. ♪ It's dangerous ♪ ♪ I'm falling ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: Somehow, these notes sound even more treacherous when the sample's played backwards halfway through the track. Beyond the screechy orchestral parts borrowed from Bollywood, the other big source of danger in "Toxic" comes from the buzzing, ominous-sounding guitar. ♪ I'm addicted to you ♪ ♪ Don't you know that you're toxic ♪ ♪ And I love what you do ♪ ♪ Don't you know that you're toxic ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: If that guitar bit sounds kind of old-school to you, that's because it's surf, a rock subgenre that was biggest in the late '50s and early '60s, when there was a boom of interest in West Coast wave culture. Clip: Surfing! [surf guitar] Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: Surf guitar is played in a way that conjures up the sounds and feel of surfing with a hard and fast picking style and loud, wet-sounding reverb. ♪ Never been ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: If surf's supposed to capture the carefree California ethos, you might be wondering why the guitar in "Toxic" has very much the opposite feel. That deep, low guitar tone sounds suspenseful in a way that matches the adrenaline rush of the Bollywood strings. That's probably because you identify that twangy guitar with something else entirely, one of the most recognizable movie themes in the world. ["James Bond Theme"] Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: The first-ever Bond film, "Dr. No," came out in 1962, right in surf rock's heyday. So it's not surprising that its title song, which would set the template for all later Bond themes, was fueled by surf. The 007 theme had an outsized influence on the music of all the Cold War spy films and TV series that followed it. ["Secret Agent Man"] ♪ There's a man who leads a life of danger ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: By now, the tone of guitar that you hear in "Toxic" has big spy connotations, and the song's Bond-inspired music video seems to be a nod to this connection. OK, so we've got the aggressive twang of the surf guitar evoking the reckless daring of a special agent and frantically sliding Bollywood strings capturing the rush of a risky love affair. How is it that these two disparate sounds from opposite sides of the globe seem to have such an affinity for each other? Turns out, they share some of the same musical DNA. Monty Norman, the film composer who penned the 007 theme, lifted its melody from a previous piece he'd written for a play adaptation of "A House for Mr. Biswas," VS Naipaul's novel about Indian immigrants. Basically, the sound that has come to define spy music was in fact born of Indian music. Adam Ragusea: And so, when we hear those two aesthetics put together in "Toxic," it feels really natural to us. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: "Toxic" distills some of the most thrilling sounds of global cinema into a three-minute pop masterpiece. What other club banger combines Bond and Bollywood so perfectly and remains a DJ staple 15 years on?
