Central Water Commission (CWC), which monitors the storage levels in 143 major reservoirs spread all over the country, reported that Indus, Mahi and Sabarmati have highly deficient reservoirs as of June 30. Ganga basin has reported a decline of 3% storage capacity from last month; Narmada, Godavari and Krishna are only at 20%, 29% and 26% of their capacity levels. As per the report, available live storage in the country’s 143 reservoirs monitored was at <a href="http://www.cwc.gov.in/sites/default/files/30062022-bulletin.pdf">only 28%</a> of their capacity. 101 of the 143 monitored reservoirs were at <a href="http://www.cwc.gov.in/sites/default/files/30062022-bulletin.pdf">40% capacity or less</a>. The highest gaps in Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand, as these states also reported the highest departures in cumulative rainfall. India is highly dependent on rainfall for its drinking water and agricultural output India’s monsoon not only provides relief from the sweltering heat but is the backbone of the agriculture industry. Timely and sufficient rainfall ensures sustenance for Indian farmers. However, the monsoon season has become increasingly erratic in India and some regions have been hit harder by the change in rainfall patterns. Parts of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Chhattisgarh have seen a significant <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/the-roots-of-india-s-deepening-rural-water-crisis-1564323444810.html">shortfall </a>in rains over the last decade compared to historical averages. After a particularly hot summer this year, India’s reservoirs have lost most of their water to evaporation. Shailendra Singh Rao, founder of climate change and carbon asset firm Creduce said that water conservation, preservation and storage is a huge problem in India. “India’s drinking water comes from reservoirs, which are highly dependent on the monsoons. From November to June, all the water reservoirs are mostly exhausted and the water is mostly used. There is a lack of system wherein, the reservoirs are either technically not equipped enough or well connected to the other water channels, so there is no continuous flow of water in most of the reservoirs in the country,” said Rao. A slight delay in monsoon, therefore, has a ripple effect on the entire agricultural cycle and on India’s overall drinking water supply. “If it doesn't rain, there is no proper channel of natural currents or other sources to fill up the reservoir throughout the year. That is a major impact due to the delayed monsoon. Jaisalmer lake Udaipur, which is considered to be the biggest reservoir for drinking water in India, is almost exhausted and dried up. If the monsoon is delayed, the surrounding ecosystem of that reservoir will also get impacted drastically,” said Rao. But looks like rain gods are in no mood to relent. Except for the East and Northeast, India witnessed a rainfall deficit in three of the four weeks of June. <keyword id="6358301" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon" source="Orion">Monsoon</keyword> directly impacts India’s growth and inflation outlook and the <keyword id="164166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Southwest-Monsoon" source="Orion">Southwest monsoon</keyword> is important as the country receives about 75% of annual rainfall between June and September. A good monsoon soothes not only farmers but the economy and markets too. This is in line with the lower end of the forecast range (92-108%) for the month provided in the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD’s) report released in May 2022. Sugarcane and jute are fine but rice and cereal coverage lags Since the forecast is correct at the lower end, crop sowing patterns are affected and the much expected bumper crop might not come to be. Rice and cereal sowing has been much lower than expected. Kharif sowing in general has declined 5.3% on a yearly basis as on July 1, 2022. “While roughly 96-97% of last year’s area has been covered for sugarcane, and jute and mesta as on July 1, 2022, it is moderate in the range of 20-24% in the case of oilseeds, coarse cereals and pulses, followed by a modest 10.3% coverage for rice,” said the report by ICRA. The report mentions that with an uneven start to the monsoon season, Kharif acreage lagged the year-ago level by a significant 24%, as on June 24, 2022. Another concern is labour shifting back to urban centres with a revival in service sector demand, which impacts the availability of manpower in the rural areas to till the land. “Also, the availability of fertilizers poses a concern, posing a downside to acreage,” added the report. Sowing can pick up if monsoon progresses well However, the IMD expects monthly rainfall in July 2022 over the country as a whole to be normal. Following heavy rains in the third week of June, sowing of kharif crops picked up pace in the last week of the month. “Typically, sowing gathers steam in July, so the lagging pace of Kharif acreage can be partly made up if the monsoon progresses well through the next month,” said a report by ICRA. June witnessed erratic rainfall as many states received deficit rains. Over 30 large reservoirs across India have not just less water compared to last year, but far less compared to the average of the last 10 years.  Moving to Gujarat The cyclone is moving close to Gujarat at a speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. It is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night, said IMD. "The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com. As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14. Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat. The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.

Heavy rain lashed <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> on Thursday leading to traffic jams and <keyword id="52295" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="waterlogging" source="Orion">waterlogging</keyword>, besides bringing much needed respite from the scorching heat to residents. Although the rainfall plummeted the national capital's temperature, it has however disrupted normal life. Massive traffic jams were witnessed in ITO, Ring Road, nearby area of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Barapullah, Delhi-Noida border, Chilla Border, UP Gate, Delhi-Gurugram road and in Palam. In an advisory to commuters, the <keyword id="6357103" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-traffic-police" source="Orion">Delhi Traffic Police</keyword> said: "As per IMD report thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi. Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly." Apart from traffic jams, waterlogging was reported in all the low lying areas of the city. "Waterlogging was reported in the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Pul Prahladpur underpass, <keyword id="1475643" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zakhira-flyover" source="Orion">Zakhira Flyover</keyword>, IP Estate, Vinod Nagar, Azadpur market underpass, Loni Road roundabout and near Pragati Maidan," an official said. Meanwhile, flight operations at the IGI Airport were also disrupted. The airport authorities have requested the passengers to reach out to the concerned airline for updated flight information. According to the authorities, multiple flights were delayed, while two have been diverted so far to Amritsar and Jaipur. Waterlogging and traffic jams in Delhi as heavy rains lash the capital

The Southwest <keyword id="6358301" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon">monsoon</keyword> will hit Kerala on Thursday later, the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd">IMD</keyword>) said considering the favourable conditions for its onset that has already been delayed by a few days. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall has been predicted at isolated places over Northeast India from June 8 to June 10. Scattered rainfall and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls likely over south <keyword id="1855223" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="peninsular-India">Peninsular India</keyword> and Islands, as well as over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and East, Central and West India. Weather likely to be dry over remaining parts of the country, said the IMD in its early morning report. Sharing inputs about monsoon circumstances, the weather office said, the northern limit of southwest monsoon continues to pass through 5 degree North and 72 degree East. "Condition are favourable for onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala today, June 3, 2021," said the IMD. The Western Disturbance as a trough in mid and upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along longitude 80 degree east to the north of latitude 25 degree north persists, it said. The weather office also mentioned that the trough with its axis at 3.1 km above mean sea level roughly along longitude 90 degree east to the north of latitude 22 degree north persists. The cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and neighbourhood, the IMD said, is also extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. It also said that similar weather conditions also persist over south Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level. "The trough from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to the cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists." As per the weather office, cyclonic circulation also persists over east central Arabian Sea and neighbourhood between 3.1 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level. Southwest monsoon to hit Kerala shores today, says IMD

The <keyword id="6358301" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon">monsoon</keyword> onset over <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> has been delayed by a few days and is now likely to take place on June 3 as the southwesterly winds gradually further strengthen from Tuesday resulting in likely enhancement of <keyword id="1166799" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rainfall-activity">rainfall activity</keyword>, latest meteorological indications show. In the last five years, except for 2017 and 2018 (May 30 and 29 respectively), the monsoon has always been delayed by a few days. In 2020, it was forecast to hit on June 1, but it started on June 5; in 2019, it was predicted June 6, but it started on June 8 and in 2016, it was delayed by a day on June 8. As per the <keyword id="6355166" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-meteorological-department">India Meteorological Department</keyword>'s (<keyword id="6366970" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd">IMD</keyword>) Monday morning report, the northern limit of southwest monsoon continues to pass through 5 degree north and 72 degree east, 6 degree N and 75 degree E, 8 degree N and 80 degree E, 12 degree N and 85 degree E, 14 degree N and 90 degree E and 17 degree N and 94 degree E. Due to strengthening of lower-level southwesterly winds, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls is very likely over northeastern states during next five days, the IMD said. The weather department reasoned Western Disturbance behind these changes considering a trough in mid and upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along longitude 72 degree E to the north of latitude 30 degree N. Lower-level moisture incursion from north Arabian Sea to the plains of <keyword id="338661" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Northwest-India">northwest India</keyword> taking place and is very likely to continue during next 3-4 days, the IMD further said. Under its influence, the weather department said, no significant change in maximum temperatures is very likely during next five days. "Also, isolated to scattered rainfall and thunderstorm activity likely over Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains of Northwest India during next 4-5 days." The cyclonic circulation over east central Arabian Sea off Karnataka coast at 3.1 km above mean sea level persists and is likely to meander over the region during next five days, the IMD said. "Southwesterly winds are also likely to strengthen during next 2-3 days." Under the influence of these and other favourable meteorological conditions, the IMD further said, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall or thunderstorm is expected over Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and isolated to scattered rainfall or thunderstorm over remaining parts of south Peninsular India during next 4-5 days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Kerala and Mahe during next 5 days, the IMD said, adding the rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka on June 1-3 and South Interior Karnataka on June 2-3. Besides, the weather outlook for June 5-7 also forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over northeast India. "Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls likely over Peninsular India. Isolated to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms likely over East and Central India, Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains of Northwest India." However, the IMD said, weather is likely to be dry over remaining parts of the country. Monsoon likely to hit Kerala on June 3

The much-awaited Southwest <keyword id="6358301" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon">Monsoon</keyword> finally arrived in Delhi Tuesday morning bringing respite from scorching heat, with weather officials saying the onset has been 16 days behind the usual date, making it the most delayed in <keyword id="2351148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="19-years">19 years</keyword>. In 2002, the monsoon had covered Delhi on July 19. "The monsoon has arrived in Delhi," senior IMD <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword> <keyword id="11617394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="k-jenamani">K Jenamani</keyword> said after a spell of rains drenched parts of South Delhi Tuesday morning. The IMD said, "Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and winds with speed of 20-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of most places of Delhi, NCR (Bahadurgarh, Gurugram, Faridabad, <keyword id="11626657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="loni-dehat">Loni Dehat</keyword>, Noida) Gohana, Sonipat, Rohtak (Haryana) Khekra (UP) during next 2 hours." "Finally Monsoon Rains over Delhi! Even though monsoon conditions were prevailing last 2-3 days, @Indiametdept was waiting for these rains to declare monsoon onset. Last 2 days it rained everywhere surrounding Delhi, except Delhi," <keyword id="158211" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Earth-Sciences">Ministry of Earth Sciences</keyword> secretary Madhavan Rajeevan tweeted. Normally, monsoon reaches Delhi by June 27 and covers the entire country by July 8. Last year, the wind system had reached the capital on June 25 and covered the entire country by June 29. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency, said the monsoon made a "weak onset" over Delhi and only patchy rainfall is predicted in the city over the next three days. He said the monsoon trough, which ran along the foothills of the Himalayas, has now shifted over the central parts of India due to low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Gujarat. "After the low-pressure systems dissipate in two to three days, the monsoon trough will again shift towards north, increasing rainfall in the region," he said. The weather department has had a tough time forecasting the advance of monsoon over Delhi this year. After several wayward forecasts, the IMD Monday acknowledged that "such type of failure by numerical models in the prediction of monsoon over the capital is rare and uncommon". The IMD had earlier said monsoon would hit Delhi on June 15, which would have been 12 days early, but the wind system entered a "break" phase. In early June, the <keyword id="6410326" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="met">Met</keyword> office said the conditions will become favourable for the monsoon to advance to Delhi and other parts of northwest India by July 7. Later, it said Delhi will get its first monsoon rains around July 10. The weather department revised the forecast yet again on Saturday, saying the monsoon may reach the capital in the next 24 hours. But it kept the city waiting on Sunday and there was hardly any rainfall on Monday too. According to Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, the monsoon had reached the capital on July 7 in 2012 and on July 9 in 2006. "In 2002, Delhi received its first monsoon showers on July 19. The city had recorded the most-delayed monsoon arrival on July 26 in 1987," he said. Central Delhi is the most rain-deficient district in the country this monsoon, receiving only 8.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 132 mm since June 1, when the season starts. It has recorded a shortfall of 94 per cent. Overall, Delhi has so far received 67 per cent less rainfall than normal, putting it in the category of "large deficient" states.
