We in Delhi NCR, witnessed first hand, in the last week of July, what chaos a downpour of rain can create, in an already faltering infrastructure. Stories of people actually being stranded in their cars from the previous evening to the next morning do exist! 
 While we cannot control what the local administration or for that matter even fellow citizens do to prevent the chaos on the roads during the <keyword id="6358301" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monsoon">monsoon</keyword>s, here are a few simple things we can undertake ourselves, to stay safe and be monsoon ready. 
 
Make your vehicle monsoon ready: Rains, mud, and water logging can take a toll on the tyres, car battery, and mud-flaps. Before the onset of monsoons ensure the tyres are in good condition, get the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Ensure mud-flaps, wipers, air conditioning and defroster are in optimal working condition. Lights, oil and filter should be checked regularly. Always drive with enough fuel in the vehicle, and at least a half if not full tank during the monsoons. It is a good idea to keep a tow rope in the car incase you are stuck in the mud and need to be towed out. 
 
Get a Safety app: There is a range of Apps available today to help you drive through unforeseen situation. Download Apps like Google Maps, One Touch Response on your phone. In case of any emergency, you can reach out to them for any direct or indirect assistance you may need. 
 
Be self-sufficient: During monsoon one may get stuck on the road for long hours. It is advisable to carry your essential medications, first aid kit, flashlight, torch light, bottled water, dry food &amp; snacks, tissues, mobile charger/phone back-up, umbrella etc. in your car for dealing with such situations. 
 
Spare set of clothes/footwear: A spare set of clothes, towels, footwear are incredibly valuable in cases one gets totally drenched in the rain and has to drive back a long distance. Sitting/driving wet is never a good idea, as that can lead to infection or fever. A good practice is to also always keep an umbrella in the car too. 
 
Keep your friends and family well informed about your whereabouts: Driving in the monsoons entail long stretches of traffic jams and snarls that can last from a few minutes to a couple of hours. Whatever the case may be, it is always a advised to keep your family, friends, and colleagues informed of your situation so that they are prepared for any delays, and to mobilize help that might be needed depending upon the situation.

 Hotter with the wind The very same summer heat that warms up the Indian subcontinent also sends warm winds to sweep across the Indian ocean — up and over South Asia. As the winds head North, the water beneath pushes south. These waters, which flow south, transport heat, thereby cooling the ocean. This process creates a bigger difference between the temperature of land and the temperature of the ocean.

 The team of researchers was able to create a model of the Indian monsoon leaving the Himalayas out of the picture altogether — that too on a hunch. John Marshall and Nicholas Lutsko, co-authors of the study, initially suspected that adding oceans to a monsoon model would decrease its intensity but found the opposite to be true.

 Looking forward Lutsko and Marshall plan on using their research to explain why the monsoon system didn’t work when the northern hemisphere of the world used to be much colder. Their research could also be the key the making more accurate predictions about the monsoon rains as the influence of one more variable has been accounted for. The mystery of India’s erratic monsoon can be found in the Indian ocean

Thanks to the heavy rains in the first three days of July, the <keyword id="1126021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monsoon-deficit">monsoon deficit</keyword> across the country has drastically reduced to 6% as compared to the 11% at the end of June. 
 
These three days have seen an average of 33.2mm rainfall across India, which is 29% above normal for these three days, and this can be attributed to the heavy rainfall in northwest and central India, the areas where monsoon is heavily concentrated as of now. 
 
As per the met office, Sunday saw the southwest monsoon getting ahead into the whole of Haryana and Punjab while also getting deeper into Gujarat and east Rajasthan. In the coming 48 hours, one can expect the wind system to cover the entire country, it told <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Monsoon-rally-in-north-and-west-deficit-drops-to-6/articleshow/53037809.cms">TNN</a>.

 We asked the experts at <keyword id="355029" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kansai-Nerolac">Kansai Nerolac</keyword> Paints for some tips on keeping the houses monsoon ready and this is what they had to offer: 
 
Reasons for damage 
 
The primary reason for damage to the interior wall is the inferior quality paint used on the exterior of the property. Concrete allows water and moisture to seep in, which ultimately gets collected within the wall. This leads to a build-up and creates damp patches along the interior wall surface. 
 
Further, the wall paint may start to peel or develop blisters. In the longer run, this tends to become a breeding ground for algae and fungus. The choice of exterior paint is crucial as it protects the external wall by preventing rain water and moisture from entering the concrete. It should be well-equipped to fight the vagaries of the weather. 
 
How to be monsoon safe 
 
Before painting 
· Any plastering, repairing and waterproofing should be done before painting. All structural cracks must be open in V-shape filled with white cement/cement-based plasters and any leakage should be stopped before painting. 
· Before undertaking any interior painting, have your walls scanned with a moisture meter to detect if there is any moisture left behind on the walls. 
· Remove all hardware from doors and windows, loosen lighting fixtures or mask them with tape or paper. 
· Dust walls thoroughly with a dry mop. Use roller, brush or spray gun to paint large surfaces. 
· Choose paints which are ‘lead free’ and ‘low’ or ‘zero VOC’ as it will ensure the well-being of your loved ones and will also help you use the rooms while they are being painted. 
 
While painting 
· Before applying the first coat, all the wall surfaces should be evened with a quality primer/putty. 
· For best results, apply 2-3 coats of paints, rather than one thick coat. 
 
Maintenance tips 
· Wash walls with a soft sponge and mild detergent twice a year for best results. For distempered walls, minimum pressure should be applied while cleaning. 
· If any dampness is observed, check for the source and rectify it immediately to prevent flaking and peeling of paint. 
· Remove stains and dust from a painted surface with a clean white cloth or sponge dipped in mild detergent. After cleaning, wash away all traces of detergent and wipe dry. 
· Never use water for spot cleaning unless the wall is totally free from extraneous dust.

However, for Excel Total, the cost of material would shoot up to Rs 9800.
