As per the official statement from RBI on Friday, it has imposed a monetary <keyword id="19899183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="penalty" source="keywords">penalty</keyword> of Rs 5 lakh on <keyword id="23068625" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Godrej-Housing-Finance" source="keywords">Godrej Housing Finance</keyword> Limited, Rs 5 lakh on <keyword id="20389260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhar-Housing-Finance" source="keywords">Aadhar Housing Finance</keyword> Limited, and Rs 3.5 lakh on Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited. These penalties by the regulator have been imposed in the exercise of powers conferred on RBI under the provisions of Section 52A of the <keyword id="20200606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Housing-Bank" source="keywords">National Housing Bank</keyword> Act, 1987. As per RBI, the statutory inspection of these companies was conducted by the National Housing Bank (NHB) with reference to their financial positions as of March 31, 2022. The RBI stated that based on the supervisory findings of non-compliance with RBI directions and related correspondence in that regard, a notice was issued to the companies advising them to show cause as to why a penalty should not be imposed on them for their failure to comply with the RBI directions. After considering the companies' replies to the notice, oral submissions during the personal hearing, and additional submissions made by them, the RBI found that Godrej Housing Finance Limited failed to obtain two independent valuation reports before sanctioning certain loans of Rs 75 lakh and above. For Aadhar Housing Finance Limited, the RBI stated that the company charged interest on loans for a period prior to the date of the actual disbursement of the loan/issuance of the check to certain borrowers, in contravention of RBI directions on the 'Fair Practices Code.' The penalty on Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited has been imposed because the company failed to undertake risk categorization of its customers during the financial year 2021-22, did not put in place a system for periodic review of risk categorization of accounts, and did not create a floating charge on the assets invested by it in terms of Section 29B of the NHB Act, in favor of its depositors, and register the same with the Registrar of Companies.

RBI imposes penalties on three housing finance companies for non-compliance with directions

In April, the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) governor Shaktikanta Das referred to <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> as the ‘elephant in the room’. He said, “The elephant has now gone out for a walk and appears to be returning to the forest. We would like the elephant to return to the forest and remain there on a durable basis… Elephant moves slowly, and last mile inflation tends to be sticky.” On Friday, the Indian government data showed that the year-on-year inflation rate based on the Consumer Price Index (<keyword id="20468215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CPI" source="keywords">CPI</keyword>) for June 2024 stood at 5.08 per cent — rising from 4.75% last month. This was the first time the headline inflation had risen since December 2023! Looks like the elephant decided to stop and look back on its way to the forest. The question remains, what’s next — will it return to the forest or return to the room to haunt us again? <h2>Food price inflation at a record high</h2> The major driver for the higher inflation figures this month has been the rising <keyword id="19960157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-prices" source="keywords">food prices</keyword> across India. In fact, food price inflation almost doubled year-on-year in June, rising to 8.36 per cent last month compared to 4.63 per cent in June 2023. Inflation in the food basket was 9.36 per cent in June, up from 8.69 per cent in May, according to the data of the National Statistical Office (NSO). Government data showed that <keyword id="513422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="Orion">retail inflation</keyword> for all food segments, including cereal, meat, eggs, milk, oils, fruits, vegetables, pulses, sugar, spices, prepared snacks, and sweets, increased month-on-month. This was the main cause for retail inflation hardening in June, diverging from the previous months' moderation. While the inflation rate based on the all-India CPI for June 2024 stood at 5.08%, rural and urban inflation rates also spiked to 5.66 per cent and 4.39 per cent, respectively. “Barring the food basket, inflation is indicating signs of bottoming out broadly across the non-food categories, also seen in the inflation in the core categories averaging at 3.5% in the last six months. A stable monsoon will play an important role in stabilising food prices and inflation levels over the next few months,” said Vivek Rathi, National Director Research, Knight Frank India. In May, annual retail inflation was at a 12-month low of 4.75%, slightly down from April's 4.83%. In December last year, retail inflation stood at 5.7 % and had been moderating until June. On the other hand, the US CPI rose only 3% on an annual basis in June versus expectations of 3.2%. Month-over-month, the US CPI declined 0.1%, on expectations for a 0.1% rise. <h2>There goes the chance of an early rate cut?</h2> While European central banks started to cut interest rates last month, hopes of such policy moves seem to have been derailed by these inflation figures. Indian central bank, RBI, has remained cautiously focused on inflation as the growth prospects remained robust. It has been waiting for the final phase of disinflation to materialise before considering rate cuts. The situation, however, does seem rather peculiar — as long as inflation does not align with the central bank's 4% target, the interest rates may remain rather high. However, the current economic environment is not gloomy at all, characterized by a robust GDP growth rate, estimated at 8.2% for 2023-24. Hence, the RBI adopts a wait-and-see approach. And the wait is likely to continue a little while longer. This year, food prices have become a significant issue for policymakers in India, and the RBI governor pinned his hopes on a good monsoon season to alleviate the food price inflation concerns. So far, the monsoon has stood up to our expectations, yet the food prices have remained stubbornly high, mainly due to extended heat wave conditions in June. "The CPI inflation came marginally higher than our expectations. While the <keyword id="67286" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="food-inflation" source="Orion">food inflation</keyword> risks will continue to dominate in the near term, we expect better sowing patterns and spatial distribution of rains to eventually ease the price pressures beyond these volatile months. Having said that, the central bank will be in no hurry to ease <keyword id="20104157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monetary-policy" source="keywords">monetary policy</keyword> given the headroom from robust growth in the backdrop of near-term inflation risks," said Upasna Bhardwaj, Chief Economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank. India's retail inflation remains within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) comfort range of 2-6% but exceeds the ideal 4% scenario. While inflation is a global concern, India has so far managed its inflation trajectory relatively well. Since May 2022, the RBI has raised the repo rate by 250 basis points cumulatively to combat inflation. However, over the last eight policy cycles, the central bank has kept the rates consistent at 6.5%. The next monetary policy meeting of the RBI is scheduled for early August. And with the higher-than-expected inflation data, the central bank is likely to keep the rate unchanged next month as well for the ninth consecutive month. However, hopes are still alive for a rate cut towards the end of the year. "We are not ruling out a stance change in October 2024 and a 25 bps rate cut each in December 2024 and February 2025, followed by an extended pause, if the food inflation outlook turns decidedly favourable on the back of a normal magnitude and favourable distribution of rainfall in the rest of the monsoon season, and there are no other shocks, either global or domestic," said Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist at ICRA. Inflation spikes in June 2024 due to high food prices; Likely to affect RBI’s decision on interest rate

"Such practices may lead to loaned funds being deployed in unproductive segments or for speculative purposes. Banks and NBFCs would, therefore, be well-advised to review such practices and take remedial action," he said. Therefore, he said, banks should adhere to regulatory prescriptions relating to loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, risk weights and monitoring of end use of funds with regard to top-ups. Das further said that the divergence between loan and deposit growth may create asset liability mismatch or <keyword id="22712997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquidity-management-issue" source="keywords">liquidity management issue</keyword>. It may potentially expose the banking system to structural liquidity issues, he said. He urged banks to mobilise deposits through innovative products and services by leveraging their vast branch network. On inflation, Das said, it is moderating but the pace of disinflation is uneven and slow. Pinning hopes on monsoon, which is 7 per cent higher than long-term average so far, the Governor said, it will have a good impact on Kharif output as well as Rabi because of improvement in moisture content in the soil. Surge in top-up housing loans not system-wide issue, says RBI Governor

Mensah, the bank's head of international operations, pointed to a range of factors that could boost inflation, like shifting supply chains, rising wages, and geopolitical risks."My instinct has been that all of those things add inefficiencies in the system, and as we're moving to a different, perhaps, type of globalization, that we might find that the underlying trend inflation rate is a little bit higher than before," Mensah said in a Wednesday interview with Bloomberg TV.Mensah's comments come amid a flurry of rate cuts from central banks in the US, China, the EU, England, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada and Mexico, among others.Those rate cuts have led the market to expect US interest rates will dip as low as they were before the pandemic, Mensah says."There are bits of the market that do assume that rates will trend back to where we were pre-COVID or soon after that," Mensah said. He adds that the terminal rate may actually be 150 basis points above that.Before the pandemic, in the decade following the Great Financial Crisis, interest rates remained at historical lows. However, as inflation soared, the Fed hiked its benchmark interest rate aggressively, initiating its first move to loosen monetary policy last month with a 50 basis point rate cut. Despite the Fed's apparent confidence that pricing pressures have eased, Mensah says a variety of inflationary risks will keep interest rates higher. "I personally have been worried just about the underlying inflationary pressures that are out there for a bunch of reasons, whether its COVID, whether its supply chain moves," he said.He also pointed to inflationary shocks like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/port-strike-could-wreck-us-economy-with-price-increases-scarcity-2024-10">US port strike</a>, which started on Tuesday and is expected to continue for weeks.Mensah says the port workers' wage demands, as well as increasing wages for workers around the world, add further inflationary pressure.Finally, he noted geopolitical risks, which he says have weakened the dollar's value as global markets have priced in new developments."I do think the market is trying to be alert to events that are happening on the horizon," Mensah said, adding there's been a dollar weakening versus the euro and British pound in broad foreign exchange markets."You can make some arguments for that. So I think the market is poised for challenges that are ahead," he said.Other analysts have also pointed to inflation risks from geopolitical conflicts.Last month, T. Rowe Price analyst Tomasz Wieladek said that even though trade openness has encouraged inflation stability, ongoing conflicts could mean globalization is at risk in the coming years. What are ‘vishing scams’ that start with a Namaste and end with monetary losses

Will there be unanimity amongst the members of the Reserve Bank of India's (<keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>) <keyword id="6375120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monetary-Policy-Committee" source="Orion">Monetary Policy Committee</keyword> (MPC) on the decisions to be taken at their <keyword id="15379699" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="November-3-meeting" source="Orion">November 3 meeting</keyword> is the question that pops up. The reason being that at the MPC meeting held in September, one member voted against the resolution hiking the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.90 per cent. And in the August meeting too there were differences of views on the resolution that was passed. "Even at the upcoming meeting each one will have a view which will be considered by the RBI is what I believe. That will be put in the letter to the Central Government," a senior economist told IANS preferring anonymity. The RBI has scheduled the November 3 meeting of MPC under Section 45ZN of the RBI Act. As per the said Section, when the RBI fails to meet the inflation target, it shall send a report to the Central government listing: (a) the reasons for failure to achieve the inflation target; (b) remedial actions proposed to be taken by it; and (c) an estimate of the time-period within which the inflation target shall be achieved pursuant to timely implementation of proposed remedial actions. The MPC at its upcoming meeting will discuss what it would tell the Centre as to why it was not able to restrain the inflation. The RBI may also sound out the Central government as to the course of inflation as well as the reasons as to why it may be at the elevated levels. In India, the retail inflation rose to 7.41 per cent in September. At the MPC meeting held in September, Dr. Ashima Goyal voted against the resolution to hike the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.90 per cent. Goyal was for a hike of 35 basis points and explaining his reasons voted against the resolution. However, the resolution was passed by a 5:1 majority. At the same meeting, another member Prof. Jayanth R. Varma voted against the second part of the resolution on the withdrawal of accommodation to ensure inflation remains within the target. Varma said the MPC should now pause rather than focus on further tightening . On the issue of upward rate revision, he was for upward revision by 60 basis points instead of 50 basis points that was proposed. As the difference between the two was only marginal Varma voted in favour. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said the communication with the central government is a privileged one and it will not be made public by the Bank. However as per Section 45ZL of the RBI Act, the minutes of the MPC meeting has to be published. Speaking at a panel discussion during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2023, they said those on low income and in the developing world will be grappling with high prices for years to come. <keyword id="154034" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gita-gopinath" source="Orion">Gita Gopinath</keyword>, Deputy Managing Director of the <keyword id="6366068" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund" source="Orion">International Monetary Fund</keyword>, said, "we do believe that, in terms of headline inflation for the global economy, we think it peaked in 2022." Participants agreed that inflation is inextricably linked to the cost of living crisis and tackling inflation is key to easing the cost crunch in the long run. However, <keyword id="60820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gopinath" source="Orion">Gopinath</keyword> warned, "even if inflation comes down, prices are high because we don't have deflation, we have lower levels of inflation. The prices have gone up. How much of an impact that has had on households and on consumption varies across countries." German Finance Minister <keyword id="1084060" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="christian-lindner" source="Orion">Christian Lindner</keyword> highlighted his country's 200 billion euro "economic shield" mobilised to protect consumers from the cost of living crisis but said that he expects the country might not need the full amount. "The price levels are lower than we expected. We have fewer hardship cases, and so my expectation is that we won't need the whole protective shield of two hundred billion, which is good news," he said. According to him, on top of protecting the society's most vulnerable, the sections in the middle also need shielding from the cost of living crisis. "From the German, European, perspective, we are doing a lot for the most vulnerable, paying welfare subsidies. But we have to ask: what can we do to stabilise the qualified people who are working hard, playing by the rules?". "A renaissance of competitiveness, so that our companies are able to pay their wages... we have to reform the electricity market, we have to reduce the burdens, for example, in taxation, we have to improve the framework conditions for our SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) in Germany and all of these supply-side measures," the minister said. The panel also agreed that the knee-jerk reaction of the "re-shoring" industry in response to the supply chain shock of the COVID pandemic must be averted if inflation and the cost of living crisis are to be tackled effectively. Giving the perspective from business, Unilever CEO Alan Jope said the "fragmentation of supply chains is frankly another inflationary pressure in this economy" and warned more generally of the dangers of inequality. "The cost-of-living crisis disproportionately impacts those at the bottom of the pyramid. There is so much talk about tightening rates, and about stimulus spending, I think the only way to break the long-term trend of rising inequality is productivity," he added. He explained that Unilever has increased the wages it pays to its own workers, imploring others to do the same. Laura D'Andrea Tyson, Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, also highlighted the fundamental issue of wages. "I almost want to say, without calling it a cost of living crisis, let's call it what existed before, and that is a living wage crisis for many people." She also suggested tackling long-standing issues around planning and approvals for housing -- in order to build more stock and bring down prices -- and addressing the climate crisis and utilising technology would aid the global response to inflation. In closing, IMF's Gopinath cautioned that any meaningful moves to bring down inflation will likely mean rising unemployment. "We are at record low unemployment rates in the US and the euro area. Everything we know about our monetary policy when you tighten interest rates is for the unemployment rate to go up." "That is how you bring down inflation," she added. Fragmentation can cost 7% of the global GDP, will face risk if we don't unite now: IMF chief

<ul class="summary-list"><li>2024 is set to be another tumultuous year, Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff wrote in Project Syndicate.</li><li>High interest rates will become a global norm, driven by factors such as excessive debt and deglobalization.</li></ul>Economies around the world managed to avoid most of the economic traps laid out through 2023, with the US circumventing a recession and developing markets forestalling a debt crisis, Kenneth Rogoff — an economics professor at Harvard University — <a href="https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/global-economic-outlook-for-2024-growing-uncertainty-by-kenneth-rogoff-2024-01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote for Project Syndicate</a>.But although the worst-case scenarios have been avoided to date, 2023 started a tumultuous trend that may extend into the new year."This is especially true for emerging markets, but don't be surprised if 2024 turns out to be a rocky year for everyone," the former IMF chief economist wrote.Detailed below are Rogoff's four key themes to watch out for.<h3>(1) Higher-for-longer interest rates</h3>Investors should let go of any hopes that interest rates ever return to the ultra-low levels that preceded 2021, Rogoff wrote. Even if global rates were driven down substantially by a US recession in the next year, this would only offer temporary relief, given a slew of factors that would eventually push interest up. These include excessive debt, rising deglobalization, populism, increased defense spending, and the green transition. <h3>(2) More US overspending</h3>Higher interest rates don't bode well for the US, as the country's deficits continue to expand, despite the economy running at full employment. Including President Joe Biden's student-loan forgiveness, the deficit stands at 7%, and its unlikely that Congress elects to cut spending."The high cumulative inflation of the past three years amounted to a de facto 10% default on government debt — a one-off event that cannot soon be repeated without severe consequences," Rogoff said.<h3>(3) China troubles</h3>China's tepid post-COVID rebound will extend into another year, as Beijing's measures of support can't hold up the entire economy."It will be hard to keep the Chinese economy firing on all cylinders while simultaneously imposing restrictions on new lending," Rogoff explained. He expects Chinese authorities to continue pushing stimulus and cheap loans to the insolvent sectors that need it, while constraining over-leveraged local governments from fresh borrowing.Broadly, Beijing will have trouble trying to restore its 5% annual growth rate, with the country's debt-to-GDP hitting 83% for 2023. The nation's overreliance on infrastructure and real estate — which has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-house-prices-real-estate-china-economy-world-recession-2023-11">buckled in the past year</a> — will continue to be a headwind, even as China starts to shift towards electric vehicles and green investments.<h3>(4) Japan</h3>Through 2023, Japan held on to its loose monetary policy, despite the world's hawkish turn. The difference has caused the Japanese yen to spiral nearly 40% against the dollar since 2021, a level that the Bank of Japan cannot continue to ignore, Rogoff said."While Japanese policymakers may prefer to sit on their hands and hope a decline in global interest rates will boost the yen and solve their problems, that is not a sustainable long-term strategy," he wrote. From interest rates to China's slowdown, these are the issues that will make 2024 another 'rocky year,' Harvard economist says

According to him, 75-100 basis points hikes might soon be what 50 basis point hikes once were. The pandemic and the war have ignited tendencies towards greater fragmentation, reshoring of supply chains and retrenchment of capital flows, which will pose long-term challenges for both globalisation and the global economy,” said Das, sounding caution that this is a disquieting string of events. Das dismissed concerns about Taiwan, saying it is premature to call it a black swan event. “Our trade with Taiwan is miniscule at 0.7% of the total trade. The impact on India would be very, very negligible,” he said. On a slightly more optimistic note, Das said that he expects the current account deficit to remain within sustainable limits, without giving any specifics. He underlined three factors – GDP growth projections, improved exports and a decline in external debt – as positives for the Indian economy in 2022-23. Going by what Das said, it is quite likely that the RBI could announce a fourth rate hike of 35-50 bps, with the repo rate inching closer to 6% by the end of 2022. Here are a few other takeaways from the press conference: <ul><li>We can’t assess the current account deficit for FY23 as a whole on the basis of one month’s merchandise trade data.</li><li>Current account deficit will be manageable, RBI has the ability to manage the gap.</li><li>So far as current inflation is concerned, I don’t think demand is a factor. Globalized inflation is a threat to global economy itself, says RBI guv Das

Apart from the decision on the repo rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India's (<keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>) Monetary Policy Committee (<keyword id="6369693" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mpc" source="Orion">MPC</keyword>) at its upcoming meeting, one can also expect few more things post the discussions. Economic experts expect the <keyword id="15698737" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mpc-to-hike-the-repo-rate" source="Orion">MPC to hike the repo rate</keyword> by 25-35 basis points (bps) with industry lobby body ASSOCHAM also urging the central bank to do the same. Further it will also be interesting to see whether there will be unanimity amongst the members of the MPC on the decisions taken at the ensuing meeting. Post MPC meeting, the RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das is expected to share what the bank has written to the central government as to the reasons for not controlling the inflation and the steps that are being taken to reign in the same. The MPC had met on November 3, to discuss what it would tell the central government on the reasons why it was not able to restrain the inflation. As per the Section 45ZN of the RBI Act, when the central bank fails to meet the inflation target, it shall send a report to the Central government listing: the reasons for failure to achieve the inflation target; remedial actions proposed to be taken by it; and an estimate of the time-period within which the inflation target shall be achieved pursuant to timely implementation of proposed remedial actions. The proceedings of the said MPC meeting have not been made public even though the law provides to the contrary. As per section 45ZK, the RBI shall publish, after the conclusion of every meeting of MPC, the resolution adopted by the said Committee. Further, as per the Section 45ZL of the RBI Act, the minutes of the MPC meeting has to be published on the 14th day after every meeting including: the resolution adopted at the meeting of the MPC; the vote of each member of the MPC, ascribed to such member, on resolutions adopted in the said meeting; and the statement of each member of the MPC under sub-section (11) of Section 45ZL on the resolutions adopted in the said meeting. On the issue of unanimity amongst the MPC members, at the September MPC meeting, Dr. Ashima Goyal voted against the resolution to hike the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.90 per cent. Goyal was for a hike of 35 basis points and explaining his reasons voted against the resolution. However, the resolution was passed by a 5:1 majority. In India, the retail inflation rose to 7.41 per cent in September. At the same meeting, another member Prof. Jayanth R. Varma voted against the second part of the resolution on the withdrawal of accommodation to ensure inflation remains within the target. Varma said the MPC should now pause rather than focus on further tightening. On the issue of upward rate revision, he was for upward revision by 60 basis points instead of 50 basis points that was proposed. As the difference between the two was only marginal Varma voted in favour. Be that as it may, the expectation of the MPC meeting is that the repo rate hike will be a moderate one and range between 25-35 bps. The RBI has hiked the repo rate by 190 bps from four per cent to 5.90 per cent. Now MPC will take into account the gross domestic product (GDP) growth estimates, the foodgrain production estimates, inflation projection, global economic activity and other factors. "The RBI will be presenting the monetary policy against the backdro p of GDP growth slowing down as well as inflation being high above six per cent," Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda said. According to him, the MPC will continue with rate hikes this time though the magnitude will be lower - probably 25-35 bps, "More specifically we do believe that the terminal repo rate for th e financial year will be 6.5 per cent, which means there will be one more rate hike in February. It is unlikely to change the stance and the withdrawal of liquidity will continue," he added. "We expect a 35 bps rate hike in the upcoming meeting. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is likely to moderate further in the coming months and slip below six per cent by the end of the fiscal year," Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CARE Ratings told IANS. She also said the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) has also fallen sharply from 16 per cent in May/June to around eight per cent. "The fall in global commodity prices comes as a big relief. However, the concern is that core inflation in India still remains high above six per cent. Food inflation and specifically cereal inflation is also high," Sinha pointed out. This, in turn, will put upward pressure on household inflationary expectations which is already at a high of around 10 per cent. Hence, while there is some reprieve on the inflation front, RBI would remain vigilant, she added. On the growth front, high frequency economic indicators like auto sales, GST collection, e-way bill, PMI continue to indicate healthy recovery. However, some consumption indicators like IIP consumer durables and non-durables remain weak, Sinha said. Moreover, external demand is weakening as the global economy slows down, Sinha said. According to K. Joseph Thomas, Head Research, Emkay Wealth, as far as interest rates go, the trajectory of domestic inflation is of prime importance. "The pressure seems to be easing on the price level, but the comfor t that can be drawn from fuel prices is far from real. The upside risks in fuel prices continue to be a concern," he said. RBI's MPC meeting could throw up a lot more than just a rate hike, say experts

In a statement issued by WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the global health watchdog said water supply was disrupted in flood-hit areas of Pakistan, forcing people to drink unsafe water which could cause cholera and other diseases. The WHO has cautioned people across flood-hit areas of Pakistan, precisely the worst affected <keyword id="12961" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sindh" source="Orion">Sindh</keyword> province to be extra careful. Tedros on Saturday highlighted that stagnant water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and spreads vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue and urged donors to continue to respond generously to save lives and prevent more suffering . Separately, the WHO Director general tweeted that he was deeply concerned about the potential for a 2nd disaster in Pakistan, spreading disease and threatening lives following the flooding and asked for quick support to tackle the issue. If we act quickly to protect the health system and deliver essential services, we can reduce the impact of this impending health crisis, he tweeted. Situation in Pakistan continues to be grim as the devastating floods have caused havoc in the country, precisely Balochistan and Sindh provinces. At least 1,545 people have been killed due to the floods across Pakistan and an estimated 16 million children impacted. The WHO has immediately released USD 10 million from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies which enabled the global health body to deliver essential medicines and other supplies to the country. In a related development, the <keyword id="6366068" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund" source="Orion">International Monetary Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="6355408" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imf" source="Orion">IMF</keyword>) on Sunday announced to support flood relief and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan under its current bailout package for the country. The Fund last month restored a stalled economic assistance package and also provided USD 1.1 billion to the country. The IMF's resident representative in the country, Esther Perez Ruiz, said in a statement that the IMF was deeply saddened by the devastating impact of the recent floods in Pakistan and extended its sympathies to the millions of flood victims. We will work with others in the international community to support, under the current programme, the authorities' relief and reconstruction efforts, and especially their ongoing endeavour to assist those affected by the floods while ensuring sustainable policies and macroeconomic stability, the statement said. However, it is not clear how IMF would provide support under the existing Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement, which was signed in July 2019 to provide USD 6 billion to Pakistan during a 39-month period. But the IMF board had approved an extension of the program until end-June 2023 and also enhanced it to about USD 6.5 billion. The Sindh health department, meanwhile, said a total of 2.5 million patients had been treated at different medical camps across the province from July 1 to date, the Dawn newspaper reported. As many as 594,241 patients were treated for skin-related diseases, followed by diarrhea (534,800), malaria (10,702), dengue (1,401), and other diseases (120,745,1), stated a report by the Sindh Directorate General Health Services. The report also showed that 90,398 patients were treated during the last 24 hours, of which 17,919 had diarrhea, 19,746 had skin-related diseases, 695 had malaria and 388 had dengue. Around 92,797 people were treated in the province on September 15, the paper reported. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the health department said that its officials are already struggling to stem the spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever in flood-hit districts of the province, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.
