Joy and light expand your heart, and warm spring air fills your lungs until the sun kisses the horizon at nearly 7 p.m.And then Monday morning hits. The problem is that suddenly, it's still dark outside at 6:45 a.m., and waking up is harder than ever.That is why I propose a common-sense, everyone-wins idea: Let's make the Monday after daylight-saving time starts a federal holiday.To the naysayers who think we can't just add a new holiday: Sure, we can. We can give up one holiday for a new one.Get rid of Presidents Day in February. Everyone knows that's the worst of all the federal holidays, in the middle of dreary February. Unless you're jetting off to the Caribbean or a swanky ski lodge, it's just a random miserable Monday to sit home in the dark. The best Presidents Day has to offer in terms of cultural impact is that it's when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/presidents-day-mattress-sales-2024-2-19">mattresses go on sale</a>.The wintertime holidays are all just too close together. You've got Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and then Presidents Day — all bam, bam, bam right after each other. Then nothing — a long slog through March, April, and most of May before you get Memorial Day. Swapping Presidents Day and Daylight Saving Monday spreads things out more evenly. (I am personally in favor of the suggestion of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jezebel.com/its-time-to-move-christmas-to-january-25th-1471473405">moving Christmas to January 25</a> for similar reasons.)<h2>We need an extra day to adjust</h2>If you had off the Monday after daylight-saving time kicked in, you could really ease into that time-change transition. An extra morning to adjust to the lost hour and later sunrise.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parents-paying-preschool-childcare-costs-new-term-dinks-dips-henry-2024-2">Parents of young children</a> know what havoc the time change can wreak on sleep schedules. Giving an extra day off work and school will give us all time to adjust, making everyone's life better.Plus, you could really do it up on that first later-light Sunday night. Toss back a few margaritas while dining outside (it's the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-chipotle-burrito-season-hiring-jobs-food-eating-out-2024-1">start of burrito season</a>, after all) and not have to worry about work the next day.This year, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oscars-2024-nominations-winners-list-2024-1">Oscars</a> fall on that first Sunday of Daylight Saving — that means that when it's 11 p.m., and the show is finally ending on the East Coast, your body will feel like it's midnight. That's too late!!! I can't stay up that late, and this is the first year in a while I have actually watched most of the nominated movies.<h2>Can't we just get rid of the time change?</h2>There is a movement afoot that wants to get rid of the time change altogether and keep the nights lighter year-round — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daylight-saving-time-polling-shows-americans-utterly-divided-2023-3">62% of Americans are in favor of ditching the time change</a> altogether. There are serious reasons, too. Data shows a real increase in heart attacks, strokes, car accidents, and other deadly accidents. The time change is, in some cases, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--underline" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daylight-saving-time-is-deadly-2018-3">literally killing us</a>.I support freezing the clocks in theory, but I don't have much hope those fat cats in Washington will actually get around to making this happen anytime soon.That's why we, as a people, must rise up and unite behind an achievable goal that is good for all Americans: Give us Daylight Saving Monday off! She had worked at Google for 10 years in the company's Atlanta, Mountain View, and Bengaluru offices. In addition to that, she had worked for startups, was secure about her finances, and was confident a corporate 9-to-5 was no longer for her."I quit my job on a Friday," Dave told Business Insider."By Monday evening, I was just bawling," she continued. "I was crying my eyes out because I realized that I need to be with people."<h2>Coworking spaces weren't inspiring</h2><div type="image" title="Woman cooking at Google offices" height="460" width="613" msid="108123993" hostid="261"></div>Dave had her post-retirement life planned out: She would write her third book, hang out with her old colleagues, and network with founders and artists at coworking spaces.But the reality of retiring early turned out quite different.She quickly realized she would no longer have the same relationship with her former colleagues."The loneliness of the coworking space actually hit me when I physically went in there and sat down — it was completely empty," Dave said about her first day as a retiree.She spent the next few weeks "coworking-space hopping." While some of the coworking spaces she visited were sold out, some hardly saw any traffic because they were used as placeholders for companies that were largely remote, Dave said."I was not making friends, and I didn't feel inspired by the physical surroundings of the coworking space,'" she said.Too much independence was also scary."Even though people say, 'I like that I'm on my own terms,' sometimes being completely untethered is scary," Dave said about her retirement. "It felt like doing a space walk."<h2>Savings and financial independence</h2><div type="image" title="Woman standing in front of a financial services advertisement." height="3024" width="4032" msid="108124325" hostid="261"></div>By retiring at 40, Dave became part of the FIRE — financial independence, retire early — community.For her, the decision to retire early came from a place of financial security.Working in the US for 11 years allowed her to build savings that went a long way in India, where the <a target="_blank" href="https://data.oecd.org/conversion/purchasing-power-parities-ppp.htm">cost of living is lower</a>. Dave was earning about $100,000 a year in San Francisco when she left her job.Before retiring, she worked with a financial advisor to ensure her savings were enough to cover her expenses, and sales from her previous books and consultancy would help pay day-to-day bills. The critical part, however, was her location."The whole idea of FIREing was possible because I'm in India," Dave said. "There's no way I could have FIREd in the US.""Everything is much more doable in India, and you can still maintain a life of luxury," she added. Dave said she had a helper coming in to help with cooking and cleaning, which cost from $100 to $200 a month.<h2>Challenges of retiring early</h2>While Dave's problems with retired life were social in nature, some in the FIRE community chose to rejoin the corporate world for other reasons."Early retirement is not for everyone," a financial planner, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/important-things-consider-before-retiring-early-2022-5">Jovan Johnson</a>, previously wrote for BI. He wrote that those who plan to retire before the age of 60 would fall into the minority of workers, and those keen to pursue the lifestyle should have a clear sense of what they'd do in retirement, be aware that the lifestyle could be isolating, and create passive income streams to make their money last.Gwendolyn Merz previously told Business Insider that she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fire-movement-quit-millennial-after-saving-over-half-income-2023-9">went back to her corporate job</a> nine months after retiring. For her, it was financial.Merz retired at 28 in northern Illinois after tracking her expenses and savings to the penny. But she ran into unanticipated problems soon into her retirement. She couldn't access parts of her savings that were tied to retirement accounts, she wasn't earning enough from her side hustles, and she was paying a lot more for health insurance.Michelle Jackson wrote for BI that she was once <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/why-ditched-traditional-fire-movement-2021-6">enticed by the FIRE movement</a> but realized she didn't want to wait years to live her best life. She was in debt and was professionally exhausted, and it didn't make sense to invest more than 50% of her income.As for Dave, her early retirement lasted four months.Not long after retiring, she landed a role as the head of special projects at an electric-vehicle infrastructure firm in Bengaluru."I am in corporate right now, but my goals are different," Dave said.
