Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins said that the company has now decided to pivot its business and focus its resources on Mojo's Micro-LED technology. "With this shift in focus of our business comes a significant change in our organisational structure, and Mojo Vision has reduced staffing across a variety of departments and functions," Perkins said in a statement late on Friday. "The reduction represents approximately 75 per cent of the company's workforce," he added. The company raised $45 million in its Series B-1 round last year. Perkins, however, said that as they made important product development progress, Mojo faced significant challenges in raising capital. "The slumping global economy, extremely tight capital markets, and the yet-to-be proven market potential for advanced AR products have all contributed to a situation where Mojo Vision has been unable to find additional private funding to continue its development of <keyword id="15993236" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mojo-lens" source="Orion">Mojo Lens</keyword>," the CEO noted. The company is now directing resources toward the continued development and commercialisation of world-class Micro-LED display technology, "where we know there is significant near-term market potential". Developed as a critical component of Mojo Lens and first announced in 2019, the Mojo Vision 14K PPI Display is the smallest, densest dynamic display ever made. "The Micro-LED technology platform underlying it is powerful and flexible enough to serve a wide range of applications from next generation wearables all the way up to future televisions and video walls," said Perkins. "We believe Micro-LED will disrupt the entire $160 billion display industry and our unique technology puts us at the forefront of this disruption." AR smart lens developer Mojo Vision lays off 75% of its workforce

Acting on the urination incident onboard an <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> <keyword id="267936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-york-delhi" source="Orion">New York-Delhi</keyword> flight last November, the flag carrier on Saturday issued show cause notices and de-rostered four cabin crew and a pilot pending investigation. Air India has also initiated internal investigations into whether there were lapses by other staff on other aspects, including the service of alcohol on flight, incident handling, complaint registration and grievance handling. In a statement, <keyword id="5863894" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="campbell-wilson" source="Orion">Campbell Wilson</keyword>, the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, said: "Air India is deeply concerned about the in-flight instances where customers have suffered due to the condemnable acts of their co-passengers on our aircraft. We regret and are pained about these experiences. "Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these matters better, both in the air and on the ground and is committed to taking action." The CEO said that the airline has initiated multiple steps with a view to materially strengthen and improve how such incidents would be addressed in future, which includes commencing a comprehensive education program to strengthen crews' awareness of and compliance with policies on the handling of incidents and unruly passengers, and to better equip crew to empathetically assist those affected, review of the airline policy on service of alcohol in flight and review the meeting frequency of the DGCA-prescribed "Internal Committee", tasked with assessing incidents, so that cases are assessed and decisions reached in a more timely manner. The steps also include improving the robustness of its legacy incident reporting processes, which are presently paper-based and manual, Air India signed a Letter of Intent in December 2022 to acquire a license for the market-leading provider of incident management software, <keyword id="15995247" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="coruson" source="Orion">Coruson</keyword>. In addition to this state-of-the-art software, the airline is also in the process of deploying iPads to Pilots and Senior Cabin Crew. When used together, crew will be able to enter voyage and incident reports electronically, which will then be rapidly and automatically routed to relevant parties including, as required, the Regulator. But soon there may time come when smart contact lens also is on the list of smart wearable devices. If market watchers are to be believed, we may soon see the smart contact lens market explode. Both companies have been already laying the groundwork for smart contact lenses. Samsung is one of the main players following Sony, Google, and Sensimed AG. This is not the first time when we’ve heard about Samsung's potential in involvement with smart contact lenses. Back in 2016, the company applied for a <a href="https://www.sammobile.com/2016/04/05/samsung-is-working-on-smart-contact-lenses-patent-filing-reveals/">patent</a> on smart contact lenses. Samsung has been working on researching optic-related smart technologies for more than half-decade now. There is no official statement by the company on smart contact lenses but we can hope this technology is right in the middle of it when it happens. Likewise, Sony, Sensimed AG, and Google are also working on the smart contact lens. Google has a dedicated research organization for smart contact lenses and other things. However, like any other new technology, this is also expected to take some time to become commercialized and then a few years to refine it for genuine use cases. Smart Contact Lenses — Mojo Vision The start-up <a href="https://www.mojo.vision/">Mojo Vision</a> drew attention back in 2020 as they introduces the first smart contact lens. It can display data based on augmented reality. It consists of a tiny microLED display which is the size of a grain of sand to share critical information. It has smart sensors that are powered by solid-state batteries built into a scleral lens that is also capable of correcting your vision. All could be possible with smart <keyword id="36155" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="contact-lenses">contact lenses</keyword>, a sci-fi-movie scenario that's becoming more and more of a reality. Samsung, Google, and Sony have experimented with smart contact lenses since 2014, with hopes of them taking photos and video with a blink of an eye or measuring your glucose levels. And today, dedicated US optics companies are testing their <keyword id="1250230" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="prototypes">prototypes</keyword>, some that could display notifications like how your smartphone would or give you timely information without interrupting your focus.Mike Wiemer: Whether you're a delivery person or somebody working to put parts together, being able to have those directions in a eyes-up and hands-free environment is important. Surgeons with real-time biometrics of the patient. There are some retail prototypes that we're looking at. Can someone be able to interact with a customer, or just eyes up in the moment, making eye contact, and yet know that, that thing that they're asking about, there are actually two more back in the stockroom?Narrator: This all sounds cool, but we're still years away from getting these contact lenses into our eyes. Why? It all comes down to the tech, medical approval, and market value. Let's start with the tech, which has to be really tiny.Ashley Tuan: If you asked me 10 years ago, I would say that's impossible for you to put the kind of electronics you'd need in a contact lens.Narrator: <keyword id="6650018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nanotechnology">Nanotechnology</keyword> for smart contact lenses wasn't readily available until the early 2000s. But even with the technology, implementing it comes with challenges.Tuan: This concept is straightforward. I think the most difficult part is to figure out, how do you do engineering to put everything together?Narrator: So, companies have to carefully consider which type of contact lens to use as their base and build the technology from there. Mojo Vision uses a scleral lens with all the technology embedded inside the lens and a wearable neck device as the processor, while Innovega uses a soft lens with a polarizer filter that pairs with glasses that handle most of the technology. But each type of contact lens comes with its own difficulties.Tuan: We've identified that the best contact-lens platform to meet our need is the scleral-lens platform because of the rigidity of it is actually protective to your eye, and it provides the stability once it's on eye. It's not popular because it has been difficult to manufacture. Every lens, you can consider it being custom made. So it takes more time to fit the lens and takes more time to make the lens. However, in recent years, scleral lens became more popular again because they realized that now it's easier to make, now it's easier to fit.Narrator: Meanwhile, at Innovega...Jerome Legerton: We started with a scleral lens, which is a hard shell. The difficulty that was perceived was so great, but then we really saw the value, and it needs to be a soft lens. And that even took us in a different path with the polarizer.Narrator: After figuring out the manufacturing issues and the tech behind the polarizer, both companies had to make sure their contact lenses were...Tuan: Superior performance, gas permeable.Legerton: Biocompatible.Narrator: Which leads us to the next challenge, medical approval. Since these smart contact lenses are considered a medical device, they need to be approved by the FDA.Legerton: If we're making the claim, then we have to prove we do that.Tuan: You try to figure out if there is anything that could be potentially harmful.Narrator: After verifying the physical and chemical properties of the lens material through multiple preclinical tests, the companies can move on to clinical trials.Tuan: And then there's specific animal testing that you need to do. And those, we are looking at ocular irritation, or you're looking at skin sensitivity. If everything's passed, then we can consider for humans on eye testing. Narrator: Currently, this is where both companies are at.Legerton: But we've been conducting a number of the phase two clinicals to verify our design and compare it to other marketed lenses so that we know where it is.Tuan: We'll debate what's the worst-case scenario, and we mitigate the risk to as low as it can be. And then we look at whether it is comfortable, whether the functionality is working as intended, and it has been really incredible experience.Narrator: The last challenge is effectively introducing this product to the market. A few reasons Google Glass wasn't popular was because of its high price tag, awkward display, and video-recording capabilities. But Mojo Vision and Innovega are not in a rush to appeal to the masses. They are helping a specific market first and then growing from there.Legerton: The first customers are the visually impaired. The next customers would be in sports analytics and sports performance enhancement, where people need their hands free, but yet want the information readily available.Wiemer: Hospitality-slash- entertainment is interested, automobile market is interested, retail is interested. I think what we need to do is demonstrate our ability to deliver and the market's desire to use it, even on a, relatively speaking, small scale. And if we can do that, we earn the right to continue. And if we continue to earn the right to continue, I think we've got a whole new category to explore over, you know, decades or something.Narrator: Mojo Vision hasn't come up with a price tag or release date yet, but Innovega says its smart contact lens could receive market clearance by the end of 2021. Its smart contact lens could cost about the same as daily disposable lenses, and its glasses could be anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000. But the company expects the price to decrease over time once it can produce larger quantities.Wiemer: In the years working on this topic, I really believe this, that smart contact lenses are a thing. There isn't a product that you can go out and buy right now, but I can tell you, there will be.Michelle Yan: Currently, both companies still need another device to pair with their smart contact lenses, and Innovega even plans to keep their glasses in the long run. In 2014, on a quarterly earnings call with analysts, Musk didn't sound very optimistic about car-sharing.I think there will be some amount of car sharing for sure, but I think there's like a limit to the whole sharing thing," he said."There is an important role for sharing but it's not - most things don't get shared. People could easily share their house or their clothes or their bicycle or something like that and they do a little bit with like Airbnb or something like that, but mostly not."That was then. Now, Musk seems to have accepted the position, often articulated by advanced-mobility experts and car-sharing evangelists, that the very limited degree to which most automobiles are utilized is a substantial economic liability for car owners. Tesla owners shouldn't be so burdened.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">TeslaTesla Autopilot in action.</div></div></div><h2>Self-driving cars make all the difference</h2>Reading the Master Plan, Part Deux, it appears that Tesla's goal is to bring a sharing option online only when full autonomy arrives, which for Tesla means a much more evolved version of its Autopilot technology.Other automakers are moving in this direction. Musk is certainly aware that GM CEO Mary Barra, for example, now routinely discusses GM's investment in car-sharing using the lens of Cruise Automation, the self-driving startup that the car maker acquired this year for about $600 million is cash and stock. So Musk may be reluctant to see Tesla fall strategically behind the curve here, simply because it's still a small player, unable to attack new opportunities with the scale of a major automaker.Presumably, much of the sharing economy that Tesla aims to join will be served by the forthcoming Model 3, a mass-market vehicle that's expected to sell for around $35,000.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">AP Photo/Justin PritchardThe Tesla Model 3.</div></div></div>It's hard to imagine the owner of a $100,000-plus Tesla Model S or Model X luxury vehicle wanting to let their all-electric baby out for hire. Most BMW and Mercedes owners don't want to see their cars turned into taxis when they're at work. Having to clean a bunch of McDonald's wrappers or beach sand out of the back seat trumps whatever extra scratch you might pocket. And don't forget that most Model 3s, inexpensive though they may be, will be financed. Would you want something you owe money on serving as a robot chauffeur for anyone and everyone?Musk doesn't often deviate from his own judgments. His usual mojo is to confidently express aspects of his vision - for all his companies, not just Tesla - and then move forward as rapidly as possible, with a risk-welcoming Silicon Valley attitude. <h2>Singing a new tune</h2>That's why this retreat, modest through it may be, from his earlier position on car sharing is significant. It proves that although he and Tesla have successfully created a car company, they're also aware that every car company around is being threatened by a collective realization than traditional car ownership can be seen as a massive waste of money.In that respect, I'd call his change of heart on car-sharing a hedge against an uncertain future. There are plenty of people in the auto industry who think that car-sharing will always be a modest form of economic activity, based on the limited scale of the sharing model as it now exists, confined largely to college campuses and cities where vehicle ownership is less common.
