<ul><li>Lecturer-turned-filmmaker Unnikrishnan B. believes a film today needs to be “extra special” to draw the audience to the theatres. </li><li>As per Unnikrishan, <keyword id="25099" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="malayalam" source="Orion">Malayalam</keyword> cinema is much ahead of other languages in terms of quality of content, but not the size of the business. </li><li>His last film Christopher was a vigilante action drama that opened to positive reviews.</li></ul>The aftermath of the lockdowns has redefined the fundamentals of the business of cinema. While Shah Rukh Khan-starrer <keyword id="12756474" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pathaan" source="Orion">Pathaan</keyword> may have broken box office records on its way to a blockbuster status, a Malayalam film with a tenth of the former’s collections is also a superhit now – all thanks to the dynamics of the OTT (over-the-top) ecosystem, says an ace Malayalam film director. The advent of a host of OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar etc and the pandemic-induced changes in the way cinema is consumed has brought on a fundamental change in the business of cinema, says Unnikrishan Bhaskaran, in an exclusive conversation with Business Insider India. As a writer-director, Unnikrishnan has been a part of the industry for over two decades and has over ten films under his belt. He debuted in the industry as a writer with the drama Jalamarmaram (1999) - that won him his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay. He ventured into direction with Smart City in 2006 and went on to direct films like Madampi (2008), Pramani (2010), Grandmaster (2012), and the latest, Aaraattu (2022) and Christopher (2023), among others. While acknowledging that the collections of Pathaan are “mind-boggling” and no other film has succeeded in bringing people to theatres in large numbers after the pandemic, Unnikrishnan insists the way to declare a film a hit or flop has changed. Since its release on January 25, 2023, Pathaan has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/indian-films-that-grossed-1000-crore-worldwide/slidelist/98144028.cms">grossed </a>over ₹1,000 crore in worldwide collections - only the fifth Indian film to do so in cinematic history. “In Malayalam, when you say a film is a superhit, it usually collects over ₹10-₹12 crore. But now if your film collects ₹5-₹6 crore from theatrical runs, you should regard it as a hit because there’s another vertical (OTT) or source of revenue that compensates for the lack of theatre revenue,” says Unnikrishnan . His latest film, the vigilante crime-drama Christopher starring Mammootty released on February 9 in theatres and opened to positive reviews - <a href="https://www.boxofficebusiness.in/2023/02/christopher-day-1-box-office-collection-worldwide.html">reportedly </a>raking in ₹11 crore in worldwide collections in 10 days of its release. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity" comment="subhead2" text="Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity">Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity</cmsannotation> According to Unnikrishnan, Malayalam cinema has high-quality content that is better than most other languages, but it’s a small industry, lacking the strength to compete with bigger industries like Tamil or Telugu language cinema. “If you take commercial figures as a yardstick, we’re (Malayalam cinema) far behind - because our films only release on 200-300 screens whereas a Vijay (a Tamil star), Rajni (Rajnikant), or Kamal Haasan film releases in over 1,000 screens. Volume-wise it can’t be compared to other languages but if you take content quality as a benchmark, we’re much much ahead,” shared Unnikrishnan. Indeed, from thrillers like the Drishyam series to feminist dramas like The Great Indian Kitchen and family dramas like Kumbalangi Nights, Malayalam cinema has long been pushing the bar with original and engaging content. As Unnikrishnan puts it, despite the constraints, “when it comes to content and innovative stuff, every language in cinema looks at Malayalam with awe.” <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Only ‘extra special’ films can draw in the crowds" comment="subhead2" text="Only ‘extra special’ films can draw in the crowds">Only ‘extra special’ films can draw in the crowds</cmsannotation> Malayalam cinema may deliver high-quality content - but it can’t always pull crowds into theatres, because content alone doesn’t attract audiences, especially after the pandemic. Unnikrishnan believes that only “extra special” films can now draw the crowds to theatres – because the rise of OTT during the pandemic led to the end of “average-run” movies. Average-run movies are typically movies that enjoy a limited run in theatres but the collections are not low enough for them to be categorised as box-office flops. “There’s no middle path now - either you watch in theatres, or when it comes to OTT. There was something called an average-run film before Covid - that’s no longer there. The majority of the audience stays away from theatres because it’s a habitual thing - they’re so used to watching it in the cosy atmosphere of their homes,” remarks Unnikrishnan, who has dabbled in both films and the television industry. The lecturer-turned-filmmaker has written and directed three award-winning films back to back – the 2003 telefilm Antharangal, the 2004 Asianet television drama Black and White and the 2005 film Annum Mazhayayirunnu. He also directed the crime drama Villain (2017)- the country's first movie entirely shot in 8K quality. In a career spanning over two decades, Unnikrishnan has seen various trends emerge, from remakes to content driven by OTT platforms. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Remakes: No longer an easy business" comment="subhead2" text="Remakes: No longer an easy business">Remakes: No longer an easy business</cmsannotation> As per Unnikrishnan , OTT hasn’t just ended the average-run movies but also the remake industry by providing movies with subtitles and dubbed versions of movies. “Remake market is now very difficult because when OTT platforms buy your content, you’re forced to dub it in all regional languages. For instance, Christopher is dubbed into Tamil and Hindi. (Now) an idea should be so fascinating that you take it up and really rework it to give a totally different film - that’s what they did with Lucifer when they remade it in Telugu,” added Unnikrishnan. Lucifer, released in 2019, is a Malayalam crime thriller and the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever - <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/regional-movies/mohanlal-s-lucifer-storms-into-rs-200-crore-club-first-for-malayalam-cinema/story-vTm7JXaAdz0FWFTllE4n2I.html">earning over ₹200 crore</a>. Its Telugu remake was released in October 2022, titled Godfather - it <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/movies/regional-cinema/story/godfather-box-office-collection-day-5-megastar-chiranjeevi-nayanthara-100-crore-2282883-2022-10-09">entered the ₹100-crore club in just three days</a>. Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 2 also <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/bollywood/box-office/drishyam-2-box-office-collection-day-29-ajay-devgns-film-continues-to-mint-money-despite-competition-from-avatar-the-way-of-water/articleshow/96295871.cms">raked in over ₹200 crore in collections</a>. It’s the official remake of the Malayalam thriller of the same name, starring <keyword id="29511" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mohan-lal" source="Orion">Mohan Lal</keyword>. As per Unnikrishnan, the success of the Hindi language Drishyam was largely due to how the movie was adapted, and also because the original release on OTT was available in only one language. Meanwhile, despite delivering one of the biggest hits of 2022 (Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2) Kartik Aaryan- starrer Shehzada failed to draw the crowds. But, even though the pandemic led to the rise in the popularity of OTT platforms, Unnikrishnan believes “OTT euphoria is transitory”, engineered by the pandemic. “When the pandemic happened, the theatres closed and we had no options - we were all glued to OTT platforms. And they (OTT) also had to constantly give you content. So people had the illusion that good cinema finally found its platform,” said Unnikrishnan. He believes that once the theatres opened after the pandemic, OTT platforms predictably changed their policy - with films releasing in theatres before coming on to OTT. “During the pandemic, many brilliant films premiered on OTT and everyone took notice of it. For instance, Drishyam 1 was a huge theatrical success but its sequel had an equally brilliant run when it (was) released on OTT. But if Jeethu and Mohanlal ( Jeethu Joseph was the director and Mohanlal was the lead actor of Drishyam) come up with a third part, definitely the OTT will insist for it to be released in theatres first,” said Unnikrishnan.

Three candidates of the BJP, including former minister and state unit chief Mangal Pandey, also filed their nomination papers. Rabri Devi reached the Vidhan Sabha secretariat along with her husband Lalu Prasad, the RJD president, and sons <keyword id="19916246" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tejashwi-yadav" source="keywords">Tejashwi Yadav</keyword> and <keyword id="20196796" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tej-pratap-yadav" source="keywords">Tej Pratap Yadav</keyword>. Jaipur, "I sometimes think of leaving it, but the chief minister's post doesn't leave me," <keyword id="49103" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-gehlot" source="Orion">Ashok Gehlot</keyword> famously said earlier this year, in part as a signal to the Congress top brass not to pick someone else for the job if the party wins the assembly polls. Over the past several months Gehlot, 72, tried every trick up his sleeve -- he has his magician father's blood running through his veins, after all -- to retain the post. Last year, MLAs loyal to him even defied the party high command by boycotting the Congress Legislature Party meeting summoned in Jaipur to possibly pave the way to the CM's post for Sachin Pilot, who in 2020 led a rebellion against the older colleague. The Gandhis wanted Gehlot to quit state politics and become the next national president of the Congress. But Gehlot succeeded in staying put. He then set himself on the task of trying to get the Congress back in a state that for the last three decades has never returned the same party to office twice in a row. Gehlot introduced a slew of welfare measures, including cheaper cooking gas for the poor and a Rs 25-lakh medical insurance scheme. The old pension scheme was back for government employees. And the Congress stalwart ensured that he was identified with each scheme. Had the Congress won, most observers feel, it would have been forced to pick Gehlot over Pilot again as CM. But the 'kursi' did leave him this time. On Sunday evening, Gehlot conceded defeat even as the final results of the counting in Rajasthan were yet to come in but it was clear that the BJP was set to cross the majority-mark. Polling was held in 199 of the 200 seats in the assembly. Gehlot's "failure", however, cannot erase his past successes, attributed mainly to his mass connect. He has been the state's chief minister thrice, in 1998-2003, 2008-13 and 2018-23. Only three other leaders have done this -- Mohan Lal Sukhadia of the Congress was the CM four times, while Haridev Joshi (Congress) and Bhairon <keyword id="3468188" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="singh-shekhawat" source="Orion">Singh Shekhawat</keyword> (BJP) were chief ministers thrice. Gehlot began with student politics. He became the president of the Rajasthan unit of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) in 1974, a post he held up to 1979. He has represented Jodhpur in the Lok Sabha five times. In Jodhpur's Sardarpura assembly segment, he had won five times in a row since 1999 before these elections -- and was on course for the sixth success. Gehlot, the story goes, came to then prime minister Indira Gandhi's notice for his work with refugees from East Bengal. He remained in the good books of Rajiv Gandhi as well. The party acknowledged his leadership as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Gujarat, when he led a tough fight on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home turf in 2017. Next year, he was appointed AICC general secretary (organisation). Earlier at the AICC, he has been in charge of the Seva Dal and the party's Uttar Pradesh and Delhi units. Gehlot has been the <keyword id="5569832" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajasthan-congress-committee" source="Orion">Rajasthan Congress Committee</keyword> president thrice, the first time when he was just 34. In 1980, Gehlot became a Member of Parliament for the first of his five times. At the Centre, he has been the junior minister for <keyword id="9363621" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tourism-and-civil-aviation" source="Orion">Tourism and Civil Aviation</keyword>. He has also led the Sports and Textiles ministries. He is married to Sunita Gehlot and the couple has a daughter and a son. His son <keyword id="578912" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vaibhav-gehlot" source="Orion">Vaibhav Gehlot</keyword>, who is the president of the <keyword id="73403" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajasthan-cricket-association" source="Orion">Rajasthan Cricket Association</keyword>, contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Jodhpur but lost to BJP's Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who later became Jal Shakti minister in the Modi government. Gehlot and Shekhawat don't tire of running each other down. The outgoing CM has accused the Union minister of trying to topple his government, and of being involved in the Sanjivani Credit Cooperative Society 'scam', an allegation over which Shekhawat has taken him to court. As the counting trends came in, Shekhawat alluded to Gehlot's early days as his magician father's assistant, and also to the politician's reputation for out maneuvering his rivals. "The magic has ended and Rajasthan has come out of the spell of the magician," he said.

A group of minority shareholders of <keyword id="51758" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dish-tv" source="Orion">Dish TV</keyword> has sent a notice to call an Extraordinary General meeting (EGM) of the direct-to-home service provider, raising concerns over corporate governance issues, seeking reconstitution of the board and removal of two independent directors questioning their independence. The notice sent by 77 shareholders of Dish TV, representing 10.15 per cent shareholding, proposed to nominate K Badri Narayanan, <keyword id="17427302" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="satis-kumar-yanmandra" source="Orion">Satis Kumar Yanmandra</keyword>, Jeet Sen Gupta as independent directors on the board of the <keyword id="60807" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="essel" source="Orion">Essel</keyword> Group firm. Besides, it has also sought the removal of two independent directors -- <keyword id="1624320" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shankar-aggarwal" source="Orion">Shankar Aggarwal</keyword> and Rashmi Aggarwal -- from the board of the company. "The existing independent directors have a long-term association with Dish TV and Essel group which cast doubt over their independence," the shareholders wrote in the notice. Dish TV is embroiled in a tussle between its largest shareholder Yes Bank Ltd (YBL) and the promoter family led by its former chairman Jawahar Lal Goel over board representation in the company. The company is unable to pass its annual statements from the last two years and the feud has led to the departure of its former promoter-backed chairman Jawahar Lal Goel. Informing about the development to the stock exchanges, Dish TV said it is examining the communication from the minority shareholders. "... will take necessary steps as per applicable law and procedures," said Dish TV in a regulatory filing. Besides, the minority shareholders have also raised several other issues questioning the investments made by the company such as in its OTT platform Watcho. "Dish TV made a significant investment of Rs 1,218 crore (which is 20 per cent of total netblock of the fixed assets, intangibles, investments and capital WIP of Rs 6,012 crore) in the FY20 (Intangible Assets), for Watcho, its flagship OTT platform," they said. The investments were qualified in FY2020 (the year of the investment itself) and in FY2021. "Upon lenders and investors questioning the investments, the company had made an impairment of Rs 203 crore in FY2022," it said. During FY20, the Essel group companies defaulted with multiple lenders, including bank loans to Essel group companies secured by the pledge of Dish TV Shares, they said. "It is our apprehension, that anticipating a loss of majority shareholding due, to the invocation of pledged Dish TV shares from bank and other lenders, the aforesaid funds may have been diverted by the promoters for other purposes," the letter said. On the removal of the two existing independent directors, the minority shareholders said, "They have long-term association with Dish TV and Essel group which cast doubt over their independence." Rashmi Aggarwal held directorship in other Essel group entities -- Dish Infra, <keyword id="2682539" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zee-media" source="Orion">Zee Media</keyword>, and Essel Forex -- till Feb 2019, while <keyword id="17427303" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shankar-agganval" source="Orion">Shankar Agganval</keyword> held directorship in Essel Infraprojects Ltd till November 2018. Besides, they have also raised other corporate governance issues and alleged that the board is not acting in line with good corporate governance standards. It does not have a "fair representation" of the incumbent significant shareholders of banks and financial institutions holding 45 per cent shareholding in the company. "The board is purportedly acting at the behest of certain minority shareholders holding merely 4 per cent of the shares in the company," they alleged. Moreover, they also raised concerns over the continuation of Jawahar Lal Goel as additional director after a proposal for his re-appointment as MD was rejected by the shareholders. "It was only after the intervention of the shareholders that he subsequently resigned as additional director," they said. In December last year, shareholders of Dish TV again rejected the proposal for the adoption of audited standalone and consolidated financial statements for FY21 and FY22 in the AGM. Earlier, the shareholders of the Direct-to-Home service provider had rejected the proposals to approve the balance sheet of the company for the last two fiscals in the 34th AGM conducted on September 26, 2022. In June 2022, shareholders in an extraordinary general meeting rejected the proposal for the reappointment of Goel as its managing director. In September, shareholders of Dish TV rejected four resolutions in the AGM, including the adoption of the company's financial statements for FY21 and FY22, and the appointment of independent director Rakesh Mohan. Dish TV shareholders, on December 30, 2021, also rejected all three proposals, including the adoption of financial statements and the reappointment of Ashok Mathai Kurien as director. Goel resigned from the board of the company on September 19. Twenty eight ministers have been sworn in at a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in Bhopal on Thursday morning. Governor Anandiben Patel administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers. Out of 28 ministers 20 are cabinet and 8 are state ministers. Those who have been sworn in include Gopal Bhargava, Vijay Shah, Jagdish Deora, Bisahu Lal Singh, Yashodhara Raje Scindia, Bhupendra Singh, Edal Singh Kansana, Brijendra Pratap Singh, Vishwas Sarang, Imrati Devi, Prabhuram Chaudhary, Mahendra Singh Sisodia, Pradyuman Singh Tomar, Prem Singh Patel, Om Prakash Saklecha, Usha Thakur, Arvind Bhadoria, Mohan Yadav, Hardeep Singh Dung, Rajyavardhan Singh Dittigaon were sworn in. Those present on the occasion include Chief Minister <keyword id="67701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivraj-Singh-Chauhan">Shivraj Singh Chauhan</keyword>, Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, BJP State President Vishnu Dutt Sharma among others. Bhadoria. Out of the 28 ministers who were sworn in, 11 are Scindia loyalists who joined the BJP along with Jyotiraditya Scindia in March. The cabinet expansion has been pending since March. The Shivraj government has been functioning with only five ministers since mid-April.

Polling began on Monday morning in 90 assembly constituencies of Haryana and during first over two hours poll percentage in the state was 7.44 per cent. Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm, officials said. As per the Election Commission data, brisk polling was going on in many districts. Among other districts, poll percentage in Jind was 7.91 per cent, <keyword id="57750" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhiwani">Bhiwani</keyword> 10.76 pc, Ambala 6.67 pc, Palwal 8.88 pc, Gurgaon 6.40 pc, Faridabad 6.10 pc, Mewat 10.24 pc, Rewari 6.79 pc, <keyword id="49507" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rohtak">Rohtak</keyword> 9.80 pc, Hisar 11 pc and in <keyword id="53970" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnal">Karnal</keyword> district it was 5.92 pc. Panchkula district had the lowest polling percentage at 2.46 pc. As many as 1,169 candidates including 105 women of various political parties are contesting the election. Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala along with his wife Gayatri exercised their right to franchise in Kaithal while Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja exercised her vote in Sirsa. Wrestler-turned-politician and BJP candidate from <keyword id="80511" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dadri">Dadri</keyword>, Babita Phogat also cast her vote from her native village in Bhiwani along with his father Mahavir Phogat and sister Geeta Phogat. Some contesting candidates also offered prayers at temples and other places of worship before casting their votes. The BJP led by Khattar has set a target of winning 75 seats, while the Congress is hoping to make a comeback following a change in guard in the state. Currently, the BJP has 48 members in the state assembly. As many as 19,578 polling stations have been set, including 13,837 in rural areas, Chief Electoral Officer, Haryana, Anurag Agarwal said. Tight security arrangements have been made and over 75,000 security personnel have been mobilised for the polls, DGP Manoj Yadava said earlier. Over 1.83 crore voters are eligible to vote that includes 85 lakh women, over one lakh service voters and 252 transgenders. This time, out of total eligible voters, over 89 lakh young voters are under 40 years of age and there are also over 3.82 lakh voters, many of them first-timers, who fall in the age group of 18-19 years. As many as 27,611 voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines are being used for the polls. CEO Agarwal said that webcasting would be done at 3,100 critical and vulnerable polling stations in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Khattar and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has appealed to people to come out and vote in large numbers. In the polls, Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), a breakaway faction of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), is hoping for an improvement in its prospects following the debacle in Lok Sabha election, in which Bharatiya Janata Party had won all the 10 seats in the state. The JJP had emerged on the scene following a feud in the Chautala clan in December last year. The BSP, AAP, INLD-SAD combine, Swaraj India and the Loktantra Suraksha Party (LSP) have thrown their hat into the ring, though none of them is fighting on all 90 seats. Prominent amongst those in the contest are Chief Minister Khattar (Karnal), former chief minister and Congress Legislative Party leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda (Garhi Sampla-Kiloi) and Randeep Singh Surjewala (Kaithal). The BJP has fielded three sportspersons -- Babita Phogat (Dadri), Yogeshwar Dutt (Baroda in Sonipat) and Sandeep Singh (Pehowa) -- besides TikTok star Sonali Phogat (Adampur). Prestige of families of Haryana's famous 'Lals' -- Devi Lal, Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal, who were former chief ministers--is at stake. Late Bansi Lal's daughter-in-law Kiran Choudhary (Tosham) and son Ranbir Mahendra (Badhra) are contesting as Congress candidates. Devi Lal's great grandson and JJP leader Dushyant Chautala (Uchana Kalan) and granddaughter-in-law Naina Chautala (Badhra) are fighting as JJP candidates. Devi Lal's grandson and former chief minister O P Chautala's son Abhay Singh Chautala is fighting as INLD candidate (from Ellenabad). Late Bhajan Lal's sons Kuldeep Bishnoi (Adampur) and Chander Mohan (Panchkula) are in the fray as Congress nominees. While BJP denied tickets to 12 of its 48 sitting legislators including two Ministers, the Congress retained its sitting legislators while the INLD saw its prominent faces switching over to the BJP, the Congress and the JJP. In the 2014 assembly polls, the BJP for the first time came to power in Haryana on its own winning 47 seats. It won the Jind bypolls earlier this year, taking its total strength in the state assembly to 48. The INLD had 19 MLAs while the Congress has 17 legislators. The BSP and the SAD had bagged one seat each in the last polls while five were Independents.

This is also the 16 th largest in India in terms of population. This fastest developing state of India has a total number 1,89,32,245 voters. The gender ratio is seen as 94,92,481 male voters and 94,39,055 female voters. During the past three Lok Sabha elections in 2004, 2009 and 2014, Chhattisgarh has been giving 10 seats to the BJP and 1 seat to the Congress party. In 2014 parliamentary elections, BJP claimed 10 constituencies leaving the Durg constituency to the Congress candidate Tamradhwaj Sahu. He surpassed the Saroj Pandey of the BJP who was holding this seat after 2009 elections. The total number of Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh are 11. Among these seats, 1 is reserved for the candidates of scheduled castes and 4 are earmarked for scheduled tribe candidates. The state of Chhattisgarh also sends 5 Rajya Sabha members from here. The last assembly elections were held in 2018 for the 91 assembly constituencies in the state. The polling was held in Chhattisgarh for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in three phases on April 11, April 18 and April 23.
