 "Just a few minutes ago, our scientists shot down a live satellite on the LEO (Low Earth Orbit). They achieved it in just three minutes," he said without clarifying to which country the satellite shot down belonged to. The <keyword id="1020427" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anti-satellite">anti-satellite</keyword> missiles were developed in India. However, Modi went on to reassure the international community that India will only use this new capability for its own security and development and that no international covenant has been broken in today's action. Anti-satellite missiles are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. For example, to bring down spy satellites. China successfully tested its own anti-satellite missile in 2007 after four failed attempts. "India has demonstrated a deterrence capability," space scientist Ajay Lele told the state-owned network Doordarshan. "It is unlikely that India would have raised the ante against any other country at this stage," he said adding that the scientists must have shot down its own satellite. An outer space treaty does not allow using weapons of mass destruction in the space, Lele explained. "A similar test by China in 2007 has left behind a lot of debris which is still floating around," Lele said. With the successful test launch of the Agni-V missile in 2012, India demonstrated the capability and technology to launch anti-satellite weapons but the government had not approved the development of such systems, former DRDO chief V K Saraswat <a href="http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/can-show-antisatellite-capability-if-govt-gives-nod-drdo-chief/939594/0" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">told the Indian Express</a> in April 2012. "Today, India has established itself as a space power," Modi said in a televised address on Wednesday (march 27). "Until now, only US, Russia and China could claim the title. India is the fourth country to achieve this feat," he added. Modi will deliver the keynote address at the Valedictory of the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on July 17. India last month was overwhelmingly elected as a non-permanent member of the powerful UN Security Council on Wednesday for a two-year term. India, the endorsed candidate from the Asia-Pacific States, won 184 votes out of the 192 ballots cast in the elections for the five non-permanent seats of the Security Council. During the address, Modi will be joined by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also address the segment. The theme of this year's High-Level Segment is 'Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary'. Held on an annual basis, the High-level Segment represents the culmination of the ECOSOC's annual cycle of work and convenes a diverse group of high-level representatives from Government, the private sector, civil society and academia. "Against the backdrop of a changing international environment and the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, the session will focus on critical forces shaping the course of multilateralism and explore ways to bolster the multilateral agenda through strong multilateral leadership, effective international institutions, a broadening of participation and an enhanced focus on global public goods," the Permanent Mission of India to the UN said in a statement. The event, being held on the eve of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the UN, assumes special significance as it will be the first opportunity for Modi to address the broader UN membership since India overwhelmingly won the Security Council election on June 17. This year's theme also resonates with India's priority for its Security Council tenure in which New Delhi has called for reformed multilateralism in a post-COVID-19 world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to address the nation this evening, and according to reports, is expected to spell out the post-demonetisation roadmap. 
 
This will be his second address to the nation since his announcement to scrap 1,000 and 500 rupees notes on November 8. 
 
While announcing the landmark decision, he had asked the people to give 50 days for demonetisation and getting accustomed to a cashless economy. 
 
In a television address to the nation on November 8, Prime Minister Modi said, "The magnitude of cash in circulation is directly linked to the level of corruption. Inflation becomes worse through the deployment of cash earned in corrupt ways." 
 
He said to break the grip of corruption and black money, the government has decided that from midnight Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes will cease to be legal tender. 
 
"The Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes hoarded by anti-national and anti-social elements will become just worthless pieces of paper," he added. 
 
Till date, the government has made several changes to the norms. 
 
After reports on crop sowing taking a hit due to no availability of cash, the government allowed the farmers to buy seeds with old Rs. 500 currency notes. 
 
A November 17 announcement allowed the farmers to withdraw up to Rs. 25,000 per week from their KYC-compliant account. 
 
Following reports on abuse of Jan Dhan accounts, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) capped the withdrawal limit to Rs. 10,000 per month. 
 
On November 17, the government made more modifications to the existing rules. Families could now withdraw up to Rs. 2.5 lakh for weddings. 
 
The currency exchange limit was reduced from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 2,000 per person. 
 
The traders in agricultural mandis were permitted to draw up to Rs. 50,000 in cash per week to pay for sundry expenses like wages. Also, government employees up to Group C could draw Rs. 10,000 salary in advance in cash. 
 
The demonetisation decision has also taken a toll on the common man, with reports of some dying while standing in queues to collect money. 
 
In between all this, Prime Minister Modi has continued to address the nation at various public gatherings and through his 'Mann ki Baat' radio programme. 
 
Making an emotional appeal at an event in Goa on November 13, Prime Minister Modi asked the "honest" people of the country to bear the hardships for another 50 days.

The ATMs will not function till November 9, and in some places till November 10. Also, Rs 10,000 daily cash withdrawal and Rs 20,000 weekly cash withdrawal limit has been set.

Teachers’ Day used to be a silent affair. The celebrations were confined to schools’ and colleges’ four-walls alone. People who used to be really excited about this day were senior secondary students as the day gave them a chance to imitate their favourite teacher for one day. But Teacher’s Day celebrations have taken a political turn as PM Modi decides to address students across the country. 
 The PM’s act of addressing students from class VI to XII through <keyword id="6408304" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword> and <keyword id="84486" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="All-INdia-radio">All India Radio</keyword> is under scrutiny, but what’s the entire hullabaloo all about? 
 
People are seeing this as another dictatorial move by the Modi-led government. But is it really so? Forcing the students of democratic India to listen to the PM’s speech surely comes across as an autocratic move. The government could have avoided this unnecessary controversy by being more flexible in its approach and making listening to the speech voluntary. 
 Listening to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword>’s address to the nation on national events like Independence Day is not mandatory, then why on Teachers’ Day? May be the government intends to influence these young minds that can be moulded quite easily at this tender age. 
 
Even the schools are going a step ahead to appease the Modi government. According to a report, Bal Bharati Public School in Noida has issued a circular stating that, “The school will remain closed (preparatory off) on September 5 for all classes. However, for classes III to XII, the key points of the Prime Minister’s address are to be noted and learnt for the school to evaluate the same (during the upcoming examination from Monday).” It further added that one question of two marks each will be asked in each of the five main papers. 
 
In South, especially TamilNadu, where Hindi is not understood so easily, teachers have been asked to interpret Prime Minister Modi’s speech in the native language. 
 
Are these events signalling the rise of a tyranny? Or would the PM prove the critics wrong by delivering an inspirational speech and choosing not to politicise this pious occasion. Let’s not be too judgemental and wait till the speech is delivered. Modi, after all, has the knack of proving his detractors wrong.

Modi, who landed in Seoul on final leg of his three-day tour, played his development plank and said ‘development’ was a medicinal herb, which would solve India’s problems. 
 
Citing examples of how India helped Nepal in its distress and how India evacuated not only its nationals but people from other countries, including Pakistan, also from Yemen, Modi said that cooperation was rising among countries. 
 
The Prime Minister, who is known for his oratory skills, quoted poet Rabindranath Tagore, saying he said South Korea was ‘Lamp of the East’, and told the gathering about his Government’s ‘Act East Policy’. 
 
He looked for investments from Indian diaspora, saying they had equal rights on the country. “The extent to which Narendra Modi has a right over India, you too have the same right on the country,” he said. 
 
As Modi nears one year of completion of his office, he did not fail to praise his own Government among people, emphasising how the country had starting changing after 30 years. 
 
This time he chose to wore a band-gala suit for the event in contrast to other events in the past in different countries, where he is spotted wearing traditional kurta-churidaar to address Indian community. 
 
Mentioning about SAARC and BRICS, India said now was the time to emphasise on ‘I’, which had become strong in past one year. 
 After his address, Modi will meet South Korean President <keyword id="1193885" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Park-Geun-Hye">Park Geun-hye</keyword> and present his ‘Make in India’ initiative to South Korean chaebols, like Samsung, LG and Hyundai. 
 
He is expected to meet highest officials of the companies and lure them to do businesses in India. 
 
After winning the biggest mandate last year in May, Modi had vowed to cut red tapism and correct India’s ranking in ‘ease of doing business’, which slipped to 142. 
 
After arriving in the country, Modi laid a wreath at Seoul National Cemetery. He also received a rousing welcome by Indian diaspora and is scheduled to address 1,500 members of Indian community before meeting the President. 
 
India and South Korea look forward to boost bilateral trade, which stands at $16 billion. 
 
Globetrotting Modi wants to attract maximum investments in India. The Indian PM wants to invite countries for his various projects like smart cities, sanitation drive, clean Ganga campaign, among others.

In a statement issued after the Prime Minister's address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic, the Confederation of All India Traders' (CAIT) seven crore business establishments across the country may down their shutters on March 22. "A final decision to the call for nationwide market closure on March 22 will be taken tomorrow (on Friday) after having consultations with trade leaders of all states," said CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal. In his address to the nation, Modi made a fervent appeal to all Indians to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid getting infected by the coronavirus outbreak, saying the world has never seen a danger as grave as this. He called for 'Janata Curfew' on March 22 from 7 am to 9 pm, saying no citizen, barring those in essential services, should get out of the house. "Even World War I and II did not affect as many countries as coronavirus has done," Modi said in a national broadcast. Asking people to sacrifice "some weeks of yours, some time of yours", Modi said given that coronavirus has no cure yet, the only way to stay safe is to stay indoors. "I request all people in the country to get out of house only when it is extremely necessary, try and do all work from home," he said. NKD CS HRS

Modi, during his monthly radio address ‘Mann ki baat’, said he would soon unveil Startup India, Standup India. 
 
"Startup India, Standup India will bring about a big opportunity for the youth of the country. On January 16, the government will launch the complete action plan of the project. All IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management), IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), central universities, NITs (National Institutes of Technology) will be joined with this programme through live connectivity," Modi said. 
 
This will come as a breather for many people who have creative ideas and lack a slew of things to launch their startups. With the backing of the government, aspiring entrepreneurs will be able to devise new systems. 
 
"We have to change the concept according to the requirements of our country. If a poor man does physical labour and a youth creates something through an innovation which lessens the physical effort of the labourer, I would consider that also a startup. I would ask banks to help such youth. Also, Startup India, Standup India, should not be limited to certain cities - it should spread to all corners of the country. I want to urge state governments also to spread this thought," Modi said. 
 
During his ‘Mann ki baat’ address, Modi reiterated his slogan for clean India and asked people to clean the statues of national and state leaders as part of his pet campaign, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, before January 26.
