<ul><li>Earlier today, India’s Prime Minister — Narendra Modi — issued a statement reiterating India’s commitment towards the welfare of the planet observing <keyword id="6453991" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Earth-Day">Earth Day</keyword>.<br /></li><li>While global warming in India remains within the two degree Celsius mark as per the Copenhagen agreement, it’s beyond the 1.5 degree Celsius limit set by the <keyword id="3087299" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-agreement">Paris Agreement</keyword>.<br /></li><li>Between 1998 and 2017, India saw $79.5 billion (₹5.5 trillion) in economic losses due to climate change according to the United Nations.<br /></li></ul>On Earth Day in 2016, India — along with 173 other countries — signed the Paris Agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference with a promise to limit the global warming temperature increase, at most, to 1.5 degrees Celsius.<br /><br />And, as India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, <a href="http://pib.nic.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1570941">issued</a> his statement for Earth Day, it was hard not to notice that India’s already reached the two degrees Celsius mark.<br /><br /><div type="ExtQuote" text="Today on Earth Day, we bow in reverence to Mother Earth. For years, this great planet has been home to phenomenal diversity. <br />Reaching the two degree mark isn’t the worst news since it’s still compatible with the 2009 Copenhagen goal. In fact, most countries are worse off having hit a three, four and, in some cases, even a five degrees Celsius increase in temperatures since the industrial era. <br /><br /><div type="image" title="climateactiontracker" msid="68998103" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;India is better off than most countries around the world with respect to its pledges and targets as per the climate change&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>

<br />In April last year, India and at least 170 other countries reiterated their commitment towards climate change in London by signing an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/shipping-/-transport/shipping-industry-joins-effort-to-tackle-climate-change/articleshow/63779431.cms?from=mdr">agreement</a> that states that stakeholders must reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 50% from shipping by 2050, based on 2008 emission levels.<br /><br />India manages to <a href="https://www.germanwatch.org/en/16046">rank</a> 14th on the Global Climate Risk Index. But despite its progress, India is among the countries <a href="http://web.worldbank.org/archive/website01291/WEB/0__CO-78.HTM">most vulnerable</a> to climate change according to the World Bank. <br /><br />It’s no secret that India’s already facing a warming climate, witnessing a decline in monsoon rain since the 1950s. Extended droughts and incidents of unexpected heavy rainfall are also more frequent. Between 1998 and 2017, India saw $79.5 billion (₹5.5 trillion) in economic losses due to climate change <a href="https://www.unisdr.org/we/inform/publications/61119">according</a> to the United Nations.<br /><br />India’s been making progress but there are still reasons to worry:<br />

<p>In November 2014, Alaska's most active volcano rumbled back to life. The Alaska Volcano Observatory <a href="http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/report_getter.php?need=current&amp;id=61991&amp;type=3">first reported</a> increased seismic activity and minor ash eruptions at <a href="http://www.volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=312030">Pavlof</a> on November 12, 2014. In the following days, lava fountains gushed from a vent north of the summit, and volcanic debris tumbled down the glacier-covered stratovolcano's north flank.</p>
<p>By November 15, Pavlof was lofting ash plumes to an altitude of 30,000 feet (9 kilometers), high enough to disrupt commercial airline flights. Seismic activity and ash eruptions diminished abruptly on the evening of November 16, but the Alaska Volcano Observatory cautioned that pauses of days to weeks are common during Pavlof's eruptions. The volcano could spew ash again with little warning.</p>

<p>This natural-color satellite image, acquired by the <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/landsat/main/LDCM_OLI_intro.html">Operational Land Imager</a> (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite, shows Pavlof's volcanic plume well above the cloud deck on November 15, 2014. NASA Captured Incredible Images Of A Huge Volcanic Eruption In Alaska 

NEW DELHI: PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> will look to cement strategic and defence cooperation with Japan when he meets his counterpart <keyword id="590894" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Shinzo-Abe">Shinzo Abe</keyword> on Monday for crucial summit talks. In a move not likely to go unnoticed in Beijing, India is all set to ink an agreement for supply of rare earth metals to Japan and another MoU for defence exchanges.<br />
<br />
Japan, which depends on China for most of its supply of rare earth metals, has been looking to diversify its supply sources. It sought cooperation from India over rare earths in 2012 after a fracas with China over Senkaku/Diaoyu islands which saw Beijing temporarily halting rare earth exports to Japan.<br />
<br />
The two countries are expected to announce a joint partnership for infrastructure development in India with a major contribution from Japan. They are also likely to upgrade their 2+2 dialogue over overlapping security and defence issues to the ministerial level. India will also look to announce some progress in its negotiations with Japan for nuclear cooperation.<br />
<br /> Modi arrived in <keyword id="4741" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tokyo">Tokyo</keyword> on Sunday evening after a Kyoto heritage tour. Modi's visit is already being hailed as an outstanding success after Abe's gesture of flying to Kyoto to receive him there on Saturday. Modi on Sunday visited two ancient Buddhist temples in Kyoto in Abe's company.<br />

Dressed in an all-white kurta pyjama, sleeveless jacket and white sandals, Modi offered prayers at the two prominent Buddhist temples in Kyoto — Toji and Kinkakuji. Official sources said Modi wearing white was a statement about peace and tranquility associated with Buddhism, an Indian “connect'' to Japan.<br />
<br />
He first went to Toji temple, which is inspired, as Modi told Abe, by the trinity of Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Modi was at the temple complex for about half-an-hour during which he enquired about the history of the eighth-century Buddhist pagoda.<br />
<br />
While leaving the complex, Modi thanked Abe for accompanying him to the temple and spending time with him. Abe, on his part, told Modi that this was only the second time that he had visited Toji temple, the last being during his student days.<br />
<br />
In Kinkakuji, Modi mingled with tourists and visitors, shook hands, pulled the ears of a child and posed for photographs with groups of people.<br />

<strong>Abe lauds deep India-Japan historical ties</strong><br />

Lauding Japan's deep historical ties with India, Abe said he was looking forward to the summit meeting with Modi after they spent time together visiting Buddhist temples. “Looking forward to seeing PM Modi again in Tokyo tomorrow,” the Japanese PM tweeted.<br />

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Abe spoke about his nation's “deep historical ties” with India. “I am very glad that PM Modi enjoyed the cultural heritage of Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto,” Abe tweeted.<br />

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Toji temple on Sunday morning, a lotus attached to a statue of Lord Buddha stood out, much to his amusement.<br />
<br />
Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, who was accompanying Modi during the tour of the ancient temple, wanted to explain the significance of the lotus.<br />
<br />
He started detailing the significance and was midway when an amused Modi pointed out that he knows about it. “I know its significance. It is the symbol of my party (BJP),” he told Abe and both had a laugh.<br />
<br /> Modi did not elaborate but during the campaign for <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls, he left no stone unturned in advertising the symbol. In the end, BJP got a landslide victory in the elections.

In Japan, Narendra Modi And Shinzo Abe Bond Over Temple Tour; Will Hold Talks Today

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Bering Sea is no stranger to <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/Phytoplankton/">phytoplankton blooms,</a> such as this late-summer event off the coast of Alaska.</p>
<p>On September 4, 2014, the <a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS) on NASA's <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/aqua/">Aqua</a> satellite acquired a natural-color image (top) of the bloom, located southwest of Nunivak Island off the coast of Alaska. The bloom was still visible a day later when astronauts aboard the International Space Station took photographs (below).</p>
<p>Blooms in the Bering Sea typically increase in spring, when nutrients and freshened water (from melting ice) are more abundant near the ocean surface. Then phytoplankton populations usually plummet in summertime after exhausting the nutrients in surface waters or falling prey to ocean grazers. By autumn, however, storms and cooler water allow nutrients to mix back to the surface, fueling more blooms.</p>
<p>"Phytoplankton blooms in the Bering Sea are very common," said <a href="https://earth.stanford.edu/kevin-arrigo">Kevin Arrigo</a>, a biological oceanographer at Stanford University. "It is one of the most productive places in the world 's oceans."</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>The chlorophyll contained in these tiny plant-like organisms often shows up in natural-color images as a green hue. However, the phytoplankton in this image are very reflective, which suggests they are a type of algae called coccolithophores, according to Arrigo.</p>
<p>"These algae cover themselves with little calcium carbonate discs, and if they are concentrated enough, they can make the water milky in appearance," he said. "These kinds of blooms used to be rare in the Bering Sea but are <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=588">becoming more common</a>."</p>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said scientists should focus their work on ‘five Es’, adding that conducting scientific research would be made easier and science administration, too, will be improved in the country.<br />
<br /> Modi, while addressing the five-day <keyword id="6364272" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-science-congress">Indian Science Congress</keyword> event, said scientists should work keeping in mind Economy, Environment, Energy, Empathy and Equity.<br />

PM Modi urges scientists to work on cost-effective solutions

US President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword> on Sunday departed from Delhi to <keyword id="13486" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vietnam" source="Orion">Vietnam</keyword> after concluding the <keyword id="42982" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="G20-Summit" source="Orion">G20 summit</keyword>. <keyword id="60973" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biden" source="Orion">Biden</keyword> had arrived on the evening of September 8 to attend the G20 Summit in the national capital. He held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> on the same day, where both the nations agreed to co-operate in the sectors like telecom, space, renewable energy, defence and education.<br /><br />Biden along with Modi also announced the launch of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/economy/news/g20-biofuel-alliance-can-generate-opportunities-worth-500-bn-in-next-3-yrs-member-nations/articleshow/103548504.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Global Biofuels Alliance</a> on the sidelines of the G20 Summit on Saturday.<br /><br />A total of 19 countries and 12 international organisations have so far agreed to join the alliance, including both G20 members and non-member countries.<br /><br />India, Brazil and the US are the founding members of the alliance.<br /><br />Apart from this, Biden was also present during the announcement of the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor.<br /><br />The first-of-its-kind economic corridor will be a historic initiative on cooperation on connectivity and infrastructure involving India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, EU, France, Italy, Germany, and the US.<br /><br />The summit has been attended by more than 30 heads of state and top officials from the European Union, invited guest countries, and 14 heads of international organisations.<br /><br />The theme of this year's G20 Summit, which is taking place under India's presidency, is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," or "One Earth · One Family · One Future," - which is drawn from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad. Essentially, the theme affirms the value of all life-human, animal, plant, and microorganism-and their interconnectedness on the planet Earth and in the wider universe.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-india-israel-failed-moon-landings-failed-final-descent-2019-9">India</a> plans to build on its historic lunar landing by sending people to the moon.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-india-attempt-first-ever-moon-landing-2023-8">India landed its first lunar spacecraft</a>, and the first robotic mission near <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-scientist-microbial-life-hiding-on-moon-south-pole-2023-6">the moon's south pole</a>.</li></ul><p>Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> confirmed <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s intention to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-helping-private-companies-build-business-moon-make-lunar-billions-2023-6">send people to the moon</a> in the near future as the nation celebrated the successful landing of the world's first-ever robotic mission to the lunar south pole region.</p><p>India's Chandrayaan-3 probe defeated all odds on August 23 after it managed to successfully land near the south pole of the moon, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-launches-mission-beat-us-india-moon-south-pole-rover-2023-8">beating competing nations</a> to the strategically important site.  </p><p>With the landing, India has become the fourth nation — after Russia, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-china-race-to-the-moon-photos-launches-2022-11">the US, and China</a> — to land on the moon.</p><p>"It definitely puts them on the international stage as an emerging space power," Robert Braun, head of space exploration at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, told Insider.</p><p>The nation will build on this mission success by launching its first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moon-missions-why-astronauts-have-not-returned-2018-7">crewed mission to the moon</a>, Modi said in Hindi during a livestream of the landing, Sky News <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/india-moon-landing-live-updates-chandrayaan-3-making-historic-bid-to-reach-south-pole-of-lunar-surface-12945600" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.</p><div type="image" title="room full of men watches narendra modi on a screen under a white ceiling" height="1499" width="1999" msid="102995553" hostid="261"></div><p>"India is now on the moon," said Modi, per the <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-asia-india-66576580#:~:text=Chandrayaan%2D3's%20lander%20touches%20down,to%20the%20hunt%20for%20water." target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a>. </p><p>The nation "will look into a human flight mission as well for the future," he said, per Sky News. </p><h2>Indian astronauts to Earth's orbit and beyond</h2><div type="image" title="man poses in white waving astronaut uniform with india flag patches on each shoulder" height="1500" width="2250" msid="102995554" hostid="261"></div><p>India has previously said it will attempt a crewed mission to low-Earth orbit by late <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/gaganyaan-launch-delayed-manned-mission-now-in-fourth-quarter-of-2024/articleshow/96406198.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2024</a>, the Times of India reported.</p><p>"India is showing and proving that the sky is not the limit," said Modi per Sky News.</p><div type="image" title="white rocket with two boosters on its sides launches through clouds with flames shooting out of boosters" height="1500" width="1999" msid="102995555" hostid="261"></div><p>Per the <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/Gaganyaan.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian Space Research Organisation,</a> India plans to first launch two uncrewed missions, Gaganyaan 1 and 2, the first of which is planned by the end of this year. The missions should test the capacity of the nation's rocket, LVM3.</p><p>This should be followed by the nation's first crewed mission, which will aim to send three astronauts to low-Earth orbit for a three-day mission.</p><h2>India nailed a difficult feat amid multiple moon crashes</h2><div type="image" title="surface of moon grey rocky cratered with luna 25 spacecraft piece visible in upper left corner" height="1500" width="2000" msid="102995557" hostid="261"></div><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-space-mission-chandrayaan-2-set-to-land-on-moon-2019-9">Chandrayaan-3 mission</a>, which successfully landed the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> lander near the south pole of the moon, cemented India's position as a frontrunner in the race to the moon.</p><p>The south polar region is strategically important because scientists <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-new-moon-rover-sample-water-ice-lunar-south-pole-2019-10">believe water ice</a> is present in the area. The hope is this water could someday support humans living on the moon and help manufacture fuel for rockets launching from the moon to Mars.</p><p>Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, tried to land its own robotic mission near the south pole of the moon, but on August 20 it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-luna-25-crash-land-on-moon-2023-8">misfired its engines and crashed</a>.</p><p>Both Japanese private <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japanese-company-ispace-fears-moon-probe-crash-landed-2023-4">company ispace</a> and Israeli nonprofit SpaceIL have also crashed on the moon in recent years.</p><p>India's first attempt at the lunar south pole region in 2019, called Chandrayaan-2, crashed as well. Clearly the Indian space agency learned a lot from that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-moon-landings-on-lunar-south-pole-crashed-2023-8">failed landing</a>.</p><p>"Last time they got to the playoffs, if you will, and this time they won the Super Bowl," Braun said.</p><p><em>Correction: August 28, 2023 — An earlier version of this article misstated Robert Braun's title. India wants to fly its own astronauts to the moon, after becoming the first nation to land near the lunar south pole

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> and <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> did not make concrete pledges to combat <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword> during a global Earth Day summit.</li><li>Both countries remained silent on new climate goals despite being among the worlds' top three greenhouse gas emitters.</li><li>Chinese officials defended the move, saying climate change should not be used as a geopolitical tool.</li></ul><p>Despite ranking amongst the worlds ' top greenhouse gas emitters, China and India declined to pledge new climate goals<a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/07/14/china-us-countries-that-produce-the-most-co-2-emissions/39548763/">. </a></p><p>The two countries held back on making concrete commitments to fight climate change at the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/us-pledges-halve-its-emissions-by-2030-renewed-climate-fight-2021-04-22/">Earth Day climate summit, a virtual meeting of 40 world leaders</a>, even as <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/22/biden-pledges-to-slash-greenhouse-gas-emissions-in-half-by-2030.html">other countries moved forward with their climate pledges</a>. </p><p>While Biden <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-pledges-halve-us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-2030-2021-4">pledged to cut the US's greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030,</a> doubling the US's goals under the Paris Climate Accord - Chinese president Xi Jinping held back from detailing any specific goals that the Chinese could take, as did Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. </p><p>Xi instead said he would "strictly control" coal-fired plants, as well as limit the increase in coal consumption until 2025, before phasing coal consumption out, following China's five-year plan.</p><p>According to Chinese cable <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> outlet <a href="https://news.cgtn.com/news/2021-04-22/President-Xi-Jinping-s-key-quotes-at-the-Leaders-Summit-on-Climate-ZFU66jdRDO/index.html">CGTN</a>, Xi added the country would "prioritize cooperation on ecological civilization in the joint building of the Belt and Road" to continue "bringing benefits" to all participating countries. </p><p>Xi coined the phrase "ecological civilization" to describe the Chinese version of sustainable development, a low-carbon framework where humans and nature coexist in harmony. He intends to do this concurrently with the Belt and Road Initiative - a massive project initiated by China to connect 70 countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe, via a web of land and sea networks.</p><p>"We must join hands, not point fingers at each other; we must maintain continuity, not reverse course easily; and we must honor commitments, not go back on promises," Xi said. </p><p>Meanwhile, Modi, who spoke after Xi, did not offer any new plans for global climate action. Instead, he <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1713442">emphasized the need for "sustainable development."</a></p><p>"Today, as we discuss global climate action, I want to leave one thought with you. <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.ATM.CO2E.PC?locations=IN&amp;most_recent_value_desc=falsealse">India's per capita carbon footprint is 60% lower than the global average</a> as our lifestyle is still rooted in sustainable traditional practices," Modi said. </p><p>However, Modi announced that India and the US will <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/need-concrete-action-at-high-speed-and-on-large-scale-to-combat-climate-change-pm/article34386170.ece">jointly launch an energy and climate partnership</a> to work towards having more options for clean technology and energy efficiency.</p><h2>Chinese officials: climate change should not be used as a geopolitical tool</h2><p>The <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3130698/global-climate-summit-xi-jinping-and-joe-biden-united-drive">South China Morning Post</a> reported that Chinese officials came to Xi's defense in a press conference after the summit, saying that climate change "should not be used as a geopolitical tool." </p><p>"We are at a different development stage than the US and Europe," said Xie Zhenhua, China's special envoy for climate change.</p><p>Xie said that China was moving faster toward carbon neutrality compared to the US and Europe, despite the "immense difficulties" it was facing in restructuring its economy. He added that Beijing and Washington would continue to talk about climate change, with a possible joint working group on climate change in the works.</p><p>Climate analysts told the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-india-complicate-bidens-climate-ambitions-11619116604">Wall Street Journal</a> that while activists were hoping that China would promise a carbon-emissions cap, it was unlikely to happen during the Earth Day summit.</p><p>"Mr. Xi obviously did not want to make any big announcement under US pressure," said Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air to the Wall Street Journal. </p><p>China <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/23/world/asia/china-climate-change.html">remains committed to its long-term goal of reaching carbon neutrality before 2060</a> and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/chinas-xi-targets-steeper-cut-carbon-intensity-by-2030-2020-12-12/#:~:text=ChinaChina's%20Xi%20targets%20steeper%20cut%20in%20carbon%20intensity%20by%202030&amp;text=%22(China's%20new%20target)%20demonstrates,emissions%20between%202025%20and%202030.0and%202030.">reaching peak carbon emissions before 2030</a>. However, the country is by far the world's <a href="https://www.wri.org/insights/interactive-chart-shows-changes-worlds-top-10-emitters">top greenhouse gas emitter</a>, as its CO2 emissions from fossil fuels are almost double that of the US's and three times that of India's. </p>

China and India, 2 of the world's biggest greenhouse gas polluters, stay silent on new emissions targets at global climate summit

<br /><ul><li><strong>Prime Minister Modi announced during his Independence Day address this year that India would send its first manned mission to space by 2022. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>The overall cost of the mission, which will involve a crew of three astronauts orbiting Earth for seven days, was pegged at $1.4 billion on 28 August. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>The goal of the mission is to cement India’s status as a space power. </strong><br /></li></ul>During his Independence Day address earlier this month, PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> earmarked a deadline for the country’s first manned space mission. He announced that the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO) would be sending an astronaut around Earth by 2022. <br /><br />On 28 August, the overall cost of the mission was pegged at $1.4 billion, significantly less than what space stalwarts like the United States and Russia spend on their expeditions. The mission, which will comprise of a three-person crew, is slated to take between five to seven days and will see the spacecraft staying within a 300 to 400 km orbit from the Earth.<br /><br />ISRO is well known for its low-cost space programmes and the organisation surged to global prominence in 2014 after its Mangalyaan mission, wherein a satellite was sent to Mars for a cost that was 10 times less than what NASA had spent on a similar project. The Mangalyaan satellite completed <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/mars-orbiter-mission-completes-1000-days-orbit">1000 days</a> in Mars's orbit last June. <br /><br />While all that is well, India, right now, has far more pressing obligations to take care of - like infrastructure for its cities and healthcare and education for its citizens. Why spend $1.4 billion on a space mission? <br /><br />The answer is simple. Bragging rights. <br /><br />To be a space power will not only be a source of national pride but an indication of of India’s increasingly prominent role on the global stage. <br /><br />And this isn’t the country’s first mission to space either. In addition to the Mars launch, it sent the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft to explore the Moon’s surface. However, the successful completion of manned space missions is a rare feat only achieved by three countries until now - the US, Russia and China. Interestingly, Denmark also has a manned space mission slated for 2022.<br /><br /><strong>Fuel from the moon</strong><br /><br />However, there’s also another, arguably more important, reason that India is interested in sending humans to space. It wants to mine fuel from the Moon someday. And this is where its space and energy ambitions converge. <br /><br />The Indian government wants to assess the feasibility of harnessing a waste-free nuclear fuel from the south side of the Moon. As a part of its <keyword id="53289" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrayaan-2">Chandrayaan-2</keyword> programme, the ISRO is set to send a rover to the Moon in early 2019 to analyse samples of the lunar surface for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/after-mangalyaan-india-wants-to-be-the-first-to-explore-the-dark-side-of-the-moon/articleshow/64793523.cms">helium-3</a> concentration, a potentially trillion-dollar isotope that is believed to be abundant on the Moon because of solar winds. <br /><br />First discovered as a result of NASA’s Apollo missions, the non-radioactive isotope does not produce waste when fused in a nuclear reaction and if harnessed adequately, could provide an important source of energy to power Earth. In December 2018, China plans to send its own <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/China-says-it-will-launch-2-robots-to-the-far-side-of-the-moon-in-December-on-an-unprecedented-lunar-exploration-mission/articleshow/65417551.cms">rover to the moon</a> to scout for helium-3 samples, among other things, illustrating the urgency of India’s task. <br /><br />The Chandrayaan-2 rover will spend two weeks covering a 400-metre radius on the moon. Following the landing of the rover, the ISRO also plans to launch a space station into orbit. A manned mission to the Moon will be a culmination of this programme. <br />

India is spending $1.4 billion on a space trip and there are bigger plans involved

Ahmedabad, Feb 13 () Gujarat Chief Minister VijayRupani on Thursday said tradition, talent and trade andcrucial factors in boosting tourism activity.<p>He was speaking after inaugurating, along with UnionCulture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel, a two-daymeeting of states and Union territories on 'TourismDestination Management and Community Participation' at TentCity in Dhordo, Kutch district.</p><p>In his address, Rupani invoked the '3T' mantra givenby Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give boost to the tourismsector in the state.</p><p>He said Modi, as Gujarat chief minister, helped Kutchto stand up on its feet with the help of tourism after thedevastating earthquake of 2001.</p><p>"Modiji always says tourism involves three Ts -tradition, talent and trade. They are very crucial forboosting tourism activity.</p><p>"Modiji has gave a new dimension to tourism by weavingGujarat's traditions and culture with this sector," Rupani wasquoted as saying by a Gujarat government release.</p><p>In his address, Patel dubbed the Rann of Kutch as a'heaven of earth'.</p><p>The tent city is situated in this white desert (Rannof Kutch) and attracts thousands of tourists every year.</p><p>"Our PM's tireless efforts has converted this placeinto a famous tourist spot and a heaven of earth. I amconfident that other parts of Kutch district would bedeveloped on the same line," said Patel.</p><p>During the two-day meet, government officials, tourismindustry entrepreneurs and other stakeholders would speak ondifferent aspects of tourism.</p><p>Best practices as well as case studies from variousstates and Union territories in the related field will also beshared during the event, said a release by the PIB.</p>Based on recommendations and discussion here, a taskforce would be constituted to document the benefits,challenges, recommendations, case studies and to prepare anaction plan to assist in policy formulation, it added. We're not allowed to identify the banker or the bank that employs him due to Davos' rules for journalists and their sources. Suffice to say, he was senior enough to be able to get meetings with the top layers of world governments.</p><p>The one thing you need to know about Modi before you get your 30 minutes with him is that he apparently loves technology and gadgets. For instance, he likes India's relatively new <a href="http://uidai.gov.in/about-uidai.html">UIDAI</a> / <a href="https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/">Aadhar scheme</a>, which gives everyone a unique ID number based on their fingerprint or iris and allows even the most destitute Indians to establish their identities without further documentation. It's going to open the door for consumer banking services for India's vast unbanked masses, basically. "Modi wants everyone to have a bank account," we heard.</p><p>With that in mind, you might be well advised to put your deal pitch on an iPad, and let Modi click through it himself. On that iPad, list - for instance - what you believe India's 10 biggest problems are, and your 100-day plan for fixing them.</p><p>Modi likes plans and targets, we were told. New Delhi [India], September 9 (ANI): Noting that India's <keyword id="4709730" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="g20-presidency" source="Orion">G20 Presidency</keyword> has become a symbol of inclusion both inside and outside the country, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> said on Saturday that it has become "People's G20" in India and crores of citizens are connected with it.<br /><br />In his opening statement at <keyword id="42982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="g20-summit" source="Orion">G20 Summit</keyword> being hosted under India's presidency, PM Modi spoke of global challenges and said 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas' can be the torch bearer to address these. <br /><br />The plaque in front of PM Modi at the G20 Summit said "Bharat".<br /><br />"India's G20 presidency has become a symbol of inclusion, of 'sabka saath' both inside and outside the country. This has become People's G20 in India. Crores of Indians are connected to this. In more than 60 cities of the country, more than 200 meetings have taken place. With the sense of 'Sabka Saath', India had proposed that the <keyword id="148491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="african-union" source="Orion">African Union</keyword> be granted permanent membership of G20. I believe that all of us agree to this proposal," he said.<br /><br />PM Modi also invited the head of the African Union to take his seat as a member of the G20.<br /><br />The first session of the summit under the theme 'One Earth' started at Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the conference.<br /><br />External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar accompanied the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumas he took his seat among world leaders. <br /><br />"With everyone's approval, I request the African Union Chairperson to take his seat as a permanent G20 member," PM Modi said.<br /><br />African Union's inclusion in G20 was among India's key priorities in the G20 summit under its presidency. African Union's inclusion in G20 grouping was proposed by PM Modi in June this year.<br /><br />At the beginning of his speech, PM Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco.<br /><br />"Before we start the proceedings of G20, I want to express my condolences over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. We pray that all injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time." <br /><br />PM Modi noted that the world has faced a new challenge of trust deficit after the COVID-19. He referred to conflict between Ukraine and Russia and said the war had deepened the trust deficit further.<br /><br />"If we can defeat a pandemic like COVID, we can also win over the challenge of this trust deficit. Today, as the President of the G20, India calls upon the entire world to transform this global trust deficit into trust and confidence. This is the time for all of us to move together," he said.<br /><br />"In this time, the mantra of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas' can be the torch bearer for us. Be it the divide between North and South, the distance between East and West, management of food and fuel, terrorism, cyber security, health, energy or water security, we will have to move towards a solid solution to this for future generations."<br /><br />Ahead of G20 Summit, PM Modi welcomed world leaders, including US President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword>, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK PM <keyword id="221875" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rishi-sunak" source="Orion">Rishi Sunak</keyword>, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.<br /><br />As the leaders arrived, they were greeted by PM Modi in the backdrop of replica of <keyword id="14091937" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="konark-wheel" source="Orion">Konark Wheel</keyword> from Odisha.<br /><br />The Konark Wheel was built during the 13th century under the reign of King Narasimhadeva-I. The wheel with 24 spokes has been adapted in India's national flag embodying India's ancient wisdom, advanced civilisation, and architectural excellence.<br /><br />The rotating motion of the Konark Wheel, symbolizes time, Kalachakra as well as progress and continuous change. It serves as a powerful symbol of the wheel of democracy that reflects the resilience of democratic ideals, and commitment to progress in society. The theme of this year's G20 Summit, which is taking place under India's presidency is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" or "One Earth, One Family, One Future."<br /><br />PM Modi had on Friday expressed confidence that the New Delhi G20 Summit will chart a new path in the human-centric and inclusive development<br /><br />"India is delighted to host the 18th G20 Summit on 09-10 September 2023 at New Delhi's iconic Bharat Mandapam. This is the first ever G20 Summit being hosted by India. I look forward to productive discussions with world leaders over the next two days. It is my firm belief that the the New Delhi G20 Summit will chart a new path in the human-centric and inclusive development," he said in a post on 'X'.<br /><br />India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1 last year.
