"In this budget, we particularly focus on <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">employment</keyword>, <keyword id="20374219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skilling" source="keywords">skilling</keyword>, MSMEs, and the middle class." <br /><br /> Besides Rs 2 lakh crore provided over a five year period for schemes and initiatives to facilitate employment, skilling and other opportunities for 4.1 crore youth, "I have made a provision of Rs 1.48 lakh crore for education, employment and skilling," she said. <br /><br /> For Bihar, where assembly elections are due next year, the finance minister announced spending of Rs 60,000 crore on infrastructure projects like expressways, power plant, heritage corridors and new airports. <br /><br /> The support to Bihar, whose ruling party and BJP's partner JD-U has been demanding an economic package and special category status for the state, is in the form of capital projects but not subsidy or cash dole. <br /><br /> Similarly, for Andhra Pradesh, whose ruling TDP recently joined BJP-led NDA, she allocated Rs 15,000 crore in financial aid through multilateral agencies. A similar request for support to Bihar will be expedited, she said. <br /><br /> For the middle class, she raised standard deduction -- a flat deduction from total salary earned by an employee in a year before calculating applicable income tax rate -- by 50 per cent to Rs 75,000 and tweaked tax slabs for taxpayers opting for the new income tax regime. <br /><br /> This will lead to taxpayers under the new tax regime -- which offers lower rates of taxes but permits limited deductions and exemptions -- saving up to Rs 17,500 in tax annually, she said. <br /><br /> To spur employment, the Budget provided for incentives for companies, including paying for one-month salary for first-time employees, incentive at specified sale to both employee and empower with respect to their retirement fund contribution in the first four years of employment and reimbursing employers up to Rs 3,000 per month for 2 years towards EPFO contribution of each additional employee. <br /><br /> Also, a programme to improve skills as well internship for students and subsidised loans for higher education will be provided, she said. <br /><br /> India's official unemployment rate in urban areas is pegged at 6.7 per cent but private agencies put it at much higher levels. <br /><br /> Buoyed by robust tax collections and a higher-than-expected dividend receipt from the Reserve Bank, Sitharaman said the government's fiscal deficit -- the difference between the total revenue earned and total expenditure -- will be trimmed to 4.9 per cent of the GDP in 2024-25, below the 5.1 per cent figure estimated in the interim budget she presented in February. <br /><br /> She reduced gross market borrowing marginally to Rs 14.01 lakh crore. <br /><br /> The Budget for 2024-25 fiscal (April 2024 to March 2025) allocated Rs 1.52 lakh crore for agriculture and allied sectors, aid for building 3 crore affordable housing units in urban and rural areas, provided credit support to small and medium businesses, raised small loans to Rs 20 lakh for small business, proposed setting up 12 industrial parks, and provided for setting up a Rs 1,000 crore venture capital fund for space sector.

From ‘Copycat’ to ‘Kursi Bachao Budget' — Here’s what Rahul and other Congress leaders had to say about Budget 2024

New Delhi, The Union <keyword id="19901283" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabinet" source="keywords">Cabinet</keyword>, chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>, on Thursday approved the establishment of three semiconductor fabrication (fab) units that will start construction within the next 100 days and generate direct employment of 20,000 advanced technology jobs and nearly 60,000 indirect jobs.<br /><br />The semiconductor fab with 50,000 wafers per month capacity will be set up by Tata Electronics Private Ltd (TEPL) in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan, in Dholera, Gujarat.<br /><br />This fab will be constructed with an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, said Union IT Minister <keyword id="19904138" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashwini-vaishnaw" source="keywords">Ashwini Vaishnaw</keyword>.<br /><br />This fab will cover high-performance compute chips with 28 nm technology, and power management chips for electric vehicles (EVs), telecom, defence, automotive, consumer electronics, display, power electronics, etc, according to the government.<br /><br />Another semiconductor assembly, testing, monitoring, and packing (ATMP) unit with a capacity of 48 million per day by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) in Morigaon, Assam, will be set up with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore.<br /><br />TSAT semiconductor is developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies including flip chip and ISIP (integrated system in package) technologies. It will cover sectors like automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom and mobile phones, etc, according to the government.<br /><br />The third semiconductor ATMP unit for specialised chips will be set up by <keyword id="20541983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cg-power" source="keywords">CG Power</keyword>, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and <keyword id="20776317" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stars-microelectronics" source="keywords">Stars Microelectronics</keyword>, Thailand in Sanand, Gujarat.<br /><br />"This unit with a capacity of 15 million per day will be set up with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore," the Centre said.<br /><br />The CG power semiconductor unit will manufacture chips for consumer, industrial, automotive, and power applications.<br /><br />Within a very short time, the India Semiconductor Mission has achieved four big successes. With these units, the semiconductor ecosystem will get established in India.<br /><br />India already has deep capabilities in chip design. With these units, the country will develop capabilities in chip fabrication. Advanced packaging technologies will be indigenously developed in India with Thursday's announcement. These units will accelerate employment creation in downstream automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, and other semiconductor consuming industries.<br /><br />The 'Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem' in India was notified in 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. In June last year, the Cabinet had approved the proposal of US-based Micron for setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. Construction of this unit is progressing at a rapid pace and a robust semiconductor ecosystem is emerging near the unit.<br />

It is expected to benefit 30 lakh youth and will cover additional employment across all sectors.</li><li>Scheme C (Support to employers): This will support employees with additional employment in all sectors by reimbursing employers up to ₹3,000 per month for two years for each additional employee's EPFO contributions. Internship allowance of Rs. 5000 per month along with one-time assistance of Rs. 6000 to be provided, the Finance Minister also said that the companies will be expected to earn the training cost and 10% of the internship cost from their CSR funds.<br /><br />According to Mr. Ramesh Alluri Reddy, CEO at TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, this “significant investment in skill development programs and the incentivization of industries to adopt comprehensive apprenticeships lays a solid foundation for a future-ready workforce. Integrating on-the-job training (OJT) as a mandated component of degrees, in collaboration with industry partners, allows students to gain invaluable practical experience, even if the training is not necessarily on-site.”<br /><br />“This initiative is a welcome move towards formal job creation, bridging the gap between theoretical education and real-world application, making graduates more job-ready.”<br /><br /><h2>Focus on skilling</h2>The Finance Minister said that the model skilling loan scheme will be revised to facilitate loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh. Further, a new scheme focussing on skilling will benefit 20 lakh individuals and ensure the set up of 1,000 training institutes and newly designed courses.<br /><br /><h2>Education loans</h2>The Union Budget 2024-25 proposes a revision of the Model Skill Loan Scheme to help 25,000 students every year. E-vouchers for loans up to Rs. 10 lakh for higher education in domestic institutions will be given directly to 1 lakh students every year with interest subvention of 3% of loan amount, said FM Sitharaman.<br /><br />Meanwhile, in the Interim Budget detailed in February 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted a notable increase in higher educational institutes and women enrolling in STEM courses over the past decade, attributing these improvements to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.<br /><br />Further, contrary to expectations, funding for the University Grants Commission (UGC) was reduced by 60.99%, dropping to Rs. 2,500 crore from the previous year's revised estimate of Rs. 6,409 crore. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Narendra Modi's party won far fewer seats than expected in India's election.</li><li>Modi's weakened majority may make it tougher for his government to push through reforms.</li></ul><p>Narendra Modi looks set to secure a historic third term leading Indian despite his party winning <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-election-results-narendra-modi-bjp-congress-2024-6">far fewer seats than exit polls had suggested</a>.</p><p>The outcome sent <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/india-stock-market-news-narendra-modi-election-nse-nifty-50-2024-6">Mumbai-listed stocks plummeting</a> — and Modi's significantly weakened majority could be a source of concern for American businesses, too.</p><p>Modi's decade as Prime Minister has often been controversial, with his vision of building a "divine India" fueling <a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/02/05/india/india-modi-ram-temple-analysis-intl-hnk/index.html">a rise in Hindu nationalism</a> that's threatened to marginalize other religious groups.</p><p>But his pro-growth, pro-business policies have boosted growth and drawn in huge amounts of foreign investment — as well as winning the support of some of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/modi-india-election-economy-russia-oil-wealth-dimon-cook-musk-2024-5">loudest voices on Wall Street</a>.</p><p>"Modi has done an unbelievable job in India," JPMorgan boss Jamie Dimon told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-jamie-dimon-economy-inflation-recession-stagflation-geopolitics-crypto-bitcoin-2024-4">the Economic Club of New York</a> in April. "I know the liberal press here, they beat the hell out of him. He's taken 400 million people out of poverty."</p><p>Elon Musk has also <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1781541775183610310">posted on X</a> about his desire to visit India and meet with Modi. The pair are expected to discuss Tesla's plan to build a multibillion-dollar new factory in the world's most-populated country.</p><p>Meanwhile, Apple CEO Cook said on a November earnings call that India is an "incredibly exciting market" and a "major focus of ours" given the explosive growth in potential customers as locals get richer. Modi has also met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft boss Satya Nadella, and Alphabet's Sundar Pichai in recent years.</p><h2 id="cc1fb394-3381-4ed0-9ccc-2a81f77556e6">Political stability</h2><p>"I think most investors have read the tea leaves and have realized that some of the political stability and predictable policies that they expect, that they desire when it comes to making investment decisions, is likely to be available in India," Rajesh Kumar Singh, a trade official for India, told Business Insider in January at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/davos-global-elite-saying-about-ai-behind-closed-doors-2024-1">the World Economic Forum in Davos</a>.</p><p>"I think the trick for India is going to be political stability, going forward for a period of time — because I think a lot of the economic fundamentals are there," Andy Baldwin, a partner at EY, said at the same conference.</p><p>But Modi's significantly reduced majority could erode that sense of stability and make it tougher for him to pass further pro-market reforms, analysts said on Tuesday.</p><h2 id="f9ebf5af-aee7-426d-b5c8-03320c6cb9dc">China hedge</h2><p>"The fear will be that if he has to rely on alliances with smaller parties, any market-friendly policies will be diluted," Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, wrote in a research note.</p><p>"Some may now worry that India's lofty earnings rating leaves it exposed on the downside now that the political narrative may not be quite as clear cut as once thought," he added.</p><p>One appeal of India for the likes of Dimon, Musk, and Cook will likely have been Modi's firm grip on power, as USA Inc aims to hedge its bets on China given its strained relationship with the US and post-pandemic economic woes.</p><p>The surprise election result could undermine that confidence.</p>
