MakeMyTrip shares soar as COVID vaccine progress from Moderna and Pfizer spark optimism of faster travel recovery

<ul><li>US biotechnology company's vaccine candidate protected mice from infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday. </li><li>The findings by scientists, including those from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the US, show that the vaccine, known as mRNA-1273, induced neutralising antibodies in mice when given as two intramuscular injections of a 1-microgramme (mcg) dose three weeks apart.</li></ul>US biotechnology company's vaccine candidate protected mice from infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday. The findings by scientists, including those from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the US, show that the vaccine, known as mRNA-1273, induced neutralising antibodies in mice when given as two intramuscular injections of a 1-microgramme (mcg) dose three weeks apart. Additional experiments found that mice given two injections of the 1-mcg dose and later challenged with SARS-CoV-2 virus either five or 13 weeks after the second injection were protected from viral replication in the lungs and nose, the researchers said. Mice challenged seven weeks after only a single dose of 1 mcg or 10 mcg of mRNA-1273 were also protected against viral replication in the lung, they said. NIAID Vaccine Research Center (VRC) scientists worked with investigators from the University of Texas at Austin to identify the atomic structure of the spike protein on the surface of the novel coronavirus. This structure was used by Moderna in the development of the vaccine candidate, according to the researchers. The latest study found that the investigational vaccine also induced robust CD8 T-cell responses in mice. It did not induce the type of cellular immune response that has been linked to vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease (VAERD), according to the researchers. This rare, allergic-type inflammation was seen in individuals vaccinated with a whole-inactivated respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine in the 1960s, they said. The researchers explained that VAERD can occur when a vaccine induces an immune response that is not strong enough to protect against infection. They vaccinated mice with sub-protective doses of mRNA-1273 and then challenged the mice with SARS-CoV-2. The mice showed no evidence of enhanced lung pathology or excessive mucus production, indicating the vaccine did not cause enhanced disease, the researchers found. The team noted that the data from these studies, combined with data from studies in nonhuman primates and Phase-1 clinical testing, support the evaluation of mRNA-1273 in clinical efficacy trials. The researchers also explained how their prior research on a candidate MERS-CoV vaccine paved the way for a rapid response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Moderna covid vaccine candidate protects mouse from COVID-19: Study

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One of the pediatricians trialing <keyword id="11901412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="moderna" source="Orion">Moderna</keyword>'s vaccine for kids 0-6 spoke with Insider about the symptoms he's seen.</li><li>Kids in his trial haven't had arm pain or many other tell-tale side effects that were seen in adults.</li></ul>Dr. Daniel Leonard is pretty sure he's vaccinated more than 50 kids under the age of 6 with Moderna's pediatric <keyword id="11896806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine" source="Orion">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword>.He doesn't know exactly how many he's actually vaccinated, because in order to properly conduct a clinical <a href="https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04796896">vaccine trial</a> he's not allowed to know who got the real vaccine, versus who was administered a fake placebo jab.But Leonard says he can't even try to venture a proper educated guess as to who's been vaccinated at his clinic so far, because Moderna's vaccine is being so well tolerated in this young age group, with such minimal side effects, that it's near <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moderna-vaccine-mom-drove-children-under-5-patient-experience-2022-3">impossible to tell who's been dosed</a>."As a pediatrician, I'm used to kids getting shots all the time and having aches or pains or groans about them a day or two later, and I did not see that," he said. "I did not see any change in sleeping behavior or pattern, I did not see any changes in appetite, no changes in growth."Moderna <a href="https://investors.modernatx.com/news/news-details/2022/Moderna-Announces-its-COVID-19-Vaccine-Phase-23-Study-in-Children-6-Months-to-Under-6-Years-Has-Successfully-Met-Its-Primary-Endpoint/default.aspx">announced earlier this month</a> that the company is making moves toward applying with the US Food and Drug Administration to authorize its baby-sized COVID-19 vaccine for kids 6 months to 6 years old this spring, after finding the company's miniature-dose vaccine generated a "robust" antibody response in kids, and had a "favorable" safety signal.According to Leonard, that "favorable" safety signal has been so sound among his patients (with no cases of the heart-swelling condition <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-myocarditis-young-men-after-vaccination-happens-is-very-rare-2021-6">myocarditis</a>, and no vaccine-related hospitalizations) that it can be hard for parents to know whether their kids got the real deal. <h2>Three noticeable side effects, including fatigue and crankiness</h2>Leonard says in his clinic, there were just three short term vaccine-related side effects he noticed regularly in the 6 month to 6 year age group. They were:<ol><li>Fatigue</li><li>Elevated temperatures (full-blown fevers were extremely rare in Moderna's trial, occurring in less than <a href="https://investors.modernatx.com/news/news-details/2022/Moderna-Announces-its-COVID-19-Vaccine-Phase-23-Study-in-Children-6-Months-to-Under-6-Years-Has-Successfully-Met-Its-Primary-Endpoint/default.aspx">0.2% of cases</a>, but Leonard said thermometer readings around 99 or 100 degrees Fahrenheit did pop up.) </li><li>Irritability for about a day or two, usually between 48-72 hours after a shot.</li></ol>That milder side effect profile, relative to older vaccine recipients, is not entirely surprising — given how baby and toddler immune systems work."The always dialed-up state of a child's immune system probably did lend itself to fewer noted side effects," Leonard said. "They should be able to mount immune responses and not have these overly dramatic, inconvenient side effects that many of the adult participants noticed."One <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moderna-vaccine-mom-drove-children-under-5-patient-experience-2022-3">family enrolled all three of their children under 5 years old</a> in the trial, and none of the kids had any noticeable symptoms.For Leonard, that's an "awesome" result. "Parents of babies are not gonna have to freak out, have an additional sleepless night and a fussy baby," he added.Once the FDA releases the data from Moderna's trial publicly, we'll be able to get a better look at whether Leonard's experience was mirrored widely at the <a href="https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04796896">other 80-plus vaccine trial sites across the US and Canada</a>, where more than 11,700 kids under 12 years old (and their parents) have signed up to be the very last check in a rigorous, multi-step process leading up to an application with the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Moderna's shot for young children. <h2>Sore arms and aches were more common in older children</h2><div type="image" title="a kid getting covid vaccine" height="3404" width="4539" msid="90573236" hostid="261"></div>Tenderness and sore arms tended to be more common among older pre-teen patients at Leonard's trial site in Hastings, Nebraska. Among the babies and toddlers it "wasn't something I stumbled across at all," he said, whereas older kids "definitely complained more of sore arms, local swelling and tenderness feeling achy, feeling feverish and tired for a day or so."The find was reassuring for Leonard."We care more about safety than anything else," he said. But some parents, excited to have early access to a COVID vaccine for their kids, were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moderna-vaccine-mom-drove-children-under-5-patient-experience-2022-3">clearly disappointed</a> that they couldn't tell whether their young ones were vaccinated. "These people wanted the product, they wanted the study vaccine," Leonard said. "They almost seemed disappointed if on the safety follow up phone calls or e-diaries, their children had not had symptoms, because they were hoping for that dose."<h2>The vaccine was safe and well tolerated, but it wasn't great at stopping mild infections </h2>According to Moderna, the vaccine was 43.7% <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-vaccine-efficacy-how-well-shots-prevent-infections-2020-11">efficacious</a> for the youngest kids in the trial (6 months to 2 years old), while vaccine efficacy for the older kids (2-6 years) was slightly lower, around 37.5%. No severe COVID cases were recorded.Dr. Leonard says he can "understand" these efficacy numbers may not sound that great to parents (though, all COVID-19 vaccines are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-well-do-boosters-vaccines-protect-omicron-chart-2022-1">performing worse against Omicron</a>, especially when it comes to preventing such mild infections.) But, when considering vaccination, he also thinks about all the potential unintended or unrecognized consequences of unchecked viral infections."We can control the components of the vaccine," he said. "We can't control the variance of COVID."The same is true of many other viral diseases. For example, doctors didn't discover until recently that <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/respiratory-syncytial-virus/symptoms-causes/syc-20353098">pediatric RSV infections may be linked to asthma</a> diagnoses later on in life. And it took many years to figure out that <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/mumps/complications/#:~:text=Just%20under%20half%20of%20all,large%20enough%20to%20cause%20infertility.">childhood mumps can lead to decreased</a> sperm counts, in a small proportion of men who were infected as children. Leonard says the COVID vaccine, like all other childhood vaccines, should be thought of as a tool for risk reduction, for controlling the impact of the virus as much as possible — both in the short term and the long run — even if that protection can't be absolute."If it is less efficacious for your child and they do end up acquiring natural COVID disease somehow, that stinks," he said. "But are you as sick as you otherwise would've been having not been vaccinated?"

The network's White House correspondent Emerald Robinson tweeted: "Dear Christians: The vaccines contain a bioluminescent marker called LUCIFERASE so that you can be tracked. Read the last book of the New Testament to see how this ends."She was retweeting someone claiming that the Moderna COVID vaccine contains the substance. The tweet has since been taken down for violating Twitter's rules, but Daily Beast <keyword id="11894119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="media" source="Orion">media</keyword> reporter Justin Baragona caught a screenshot:Robinson was briefly suspended from Twitter for the violation, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/newsmax-reporter-locked-out-twitter-after-claiming-luciferase-covid-19-vaccines-1645726?amp=1">Newsweek reported</a>. Mazi's alleged scheme involved the sale of bogus medicine and falsified vaccine cards. According to the DOJ, this is the first time someone has ever been charged for giving out fake versions of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (<keyword id="6379474" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="cdc">CDC</keyword>) vaccine cards.According to a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/1411666/download">criminal complaint</a> seen by Insider, Mazi claimed the pills, which she called "homeoprophylaxis immunization pellets," contained a minute amount of the COVID virus. The sham cards falsely indicated that Mazi's customers received the Moderna COVID vaccine, per the complaint. The complaint noted that Mazi also instructed her customers on how to fill the false vaccine cards out using real Moderna vaccine lot numbers.Per the DOJ, Mazi would encourage her customers to buy her pills for their children and babies, claiming that US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-authorized vaccines contain "toxic ingredients." "This defendant allegedly defrauded and endangered the public by preying on fears and spreading misinformation about FDA-authorized vaccinations, while also peddling fake treatments that put people's lives at risk. While past research has shown how moms who've had COVID-19 can pass protective antibodies on in utero and through breastmilk, the findings suggest <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/getting-covid-worse-for-pregnant-than-getting-the-vaccine-2021-3">getting vaccinated is even more protective, and safer</a>. The results, which come from several studies that have yet to be peer-reviewed, help tip the scale in favor of vaccines in <keyword id="6357793" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pregnancy">pregnancy</keyword> - something researchers are just beginning to assess in clinical trials. <h2>The studies found antibodies in umbilical cord blood and breastmilk</h2>In <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.03.07.21253094v1.full-text">one preprint</a>, researchers looked at 131 vaccinated women - 84 were pregnant and 31 were lactating. They tested their blood, umbilical cord blood, and breastmilk for COVID-19 antibodies after both vaccine doses, and again two to six weeks after the second one. (All women received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.) They found pregnant people had just as robust an immune response as their non-pregnant counterparts, and that umbilical cord blood and breastmilk samples contained vaccine-generated antibodies. They also found moms who got the vaccine were better protected against COVID-19 than those who developed antibodies after being infected with the virus. When comparing the Moderna to the Pfizer vaccine, the study authors found Moderna's gave moms a bigger boost of one type of antibody, and the bump from Pfizer's vaccine was less robust. That could have to do with the differences in length of time between doses. More research is needed to understand if one vaccine is better than others in pregnancy.In another <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.03.11.21253352v1">study</a> out of Israel, researchers looked at 20 moms and their babies who received both vaccine doses within about a month of delivery. They all had antibodies in their blood and umbilical cord blood. The more recently they'd gotten their vaccines, the stronger the immune response. "Getting the vaccine later in pregnancy can better guarantee antibody protection to babies via both the placenta and mothers' breast milk," Dr. Jessica Madden, a pediatrician and neonatologist who serves as medical director of <a href="http://aeroflowbreastpumps.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeroflow Breastpumps</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/which-trimester-is-best-to-get-covid-vaccine-in-pregnancy-2021-3">previously told Insider</a>. Even getting a single dose of the vaccine before delivery can help, one case study showed. In it, doctors detailed how a baby born three weeks after her mom's first dose of the Moderna vaccine <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-has-covid-19-antibodies-from-vaccinated-mom-2021-3">had antibodies generated from the shot</a>. <h2>We don't yet have rigorous data on the COVID-19 vaccine in pregnancy </h2>The findings aren't especially surprising, as other vaccines like for the flu are recommended in pregnancy to protect both mom and baby. But there's still a lot to learn about how strong and long-lasting vaccine-generated protection from COVID-19 is in babies, and clinical trials are evaluating the safety and efficacy of getting the shot while pregnant, though experts believe they're safe. "Based on how the [Pfizer and Moderna] COVID vaccine works, there should be very little risk to a developing baby," Madden said. <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/wondering-about-covid-19-vaccines-if-youre-pregnant-or-breastfeeding-2021010721722">Harvard experts say</a> the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which is not made from mRNA but rather a harmless form of the common cold virus called adenovirus, should be safe in pregnancy too, though clinical trials still need to be conducted.

That's the question many pregnant people are asking. On the one hand, while most people who contract COVID-19 in <keyword id="6357793" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pregnancy">pregnancy</keyword> end up doing fine and delivering healthy babies, they're still <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-pregnant-women-increased-risk-for-severe-coronavirus-cases-hospitalization-2020-6">at higher risk for hospitalization</a>, ICU admission, and even death than infected non-pregnant women. On the other, the <keyword id="8624004" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus-vaccine">coronavirus vaccine</keyword> may come with its own risks, most of which are unknown since pregnant people weren't enrolled in the clinical trials that led to the vaccines' emergency-use authorization. Here's a breakdown showing why. <h2>COVID-19 in pregnancy is linked to serious complications</h2>If infected, pregnant people are at increased risk for serious complications when compared to nonpregnant women with the disease, a November <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6944e3.htm?s_cid=mm6944e3_w">report</a> out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - the largest of its kind to date - found. The analysis looked at data from about 400,000 15- to 44-year-old women who had symptomatic COVID-19 between late January and early October. They found that pregnant women with COVID-19 were nearly four times as likely to need ventilation and twice as likely to die than nonpregnant women with COVID-19 of the same age.COVID-19 in pregnancy is also linked to <a href="https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/11/studies-detail-risk-preterm-birth-severe-covid-19-pregnant-women">an increased risk of preterm delivery</a>. The overall risks for COVID-19 complications in pregnancy were low: 1.5% of pregnant women went to the ICU, 0.29% needed ventilation, 0.07 required life support, and 0.15% died. <a href="https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/severe-covid-19-pregnancy-associated-preterm-birth-other-complications">A study presented in January 2021</a> including 1,200 infected pregnant women across 33 US hospitals found that the 12% with critical or severe symptoms tended to be most at risk for complications and death, and were also more likely to have other risk factors like a higher body mass, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension.<h2>Getting a COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy is not linked to complications or worse side effects</h2>By contrast, there is no evidence of the COVID-19 vaccine leading to death in anyone, pregnant or not. And pregnant women in particular haven't suffered any worse side effects from the vaccine than in non-pregnant women, according to the latest CDC vaccine safety <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/slides-2021-02/28-03-01/05-covid-Shimabukuro.pdf">report</a>, published March 1, which includes over 30,000 vaccinated pregnant women.There hasn't been an uptick in pregnancy-related complications, like stillbirth and miscarriage, among pregnant women who've gotten the shot, either. "We do have <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> that clearly indicates that vaccination does decrease disease process, disease progression, and death," OB-GYN Dr. Jessica Shepherd <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Health/pregnant-women-jj-covid-19-vaccine/story?id=76327748">told ABC</a>. "Risk vs. benefit, in the end at this point, is transmission and death vs. protection."<h2>COVID-19 can cause long-term symptoms</h2>Pregnant or not, getting COVID-19 can mean experiencing any number of side effects, from a mild fever and aches to debilitating fatigue, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and a loss of taste and smell.While most people recover after a few weeks, research suggests about 10% become "long haulers," or people whose symptoms last months - or now, even more than a year - after their initial illness has passed and they test negative. Long-haulers often grapple with fatigue, body aches, difficulty sleeping, and mental health issues including delirium, anxiety, and brain fog or memory loss. <h2>The vaccine can lead to short-term side effects </h2>The available COVID-19 vaccines, by comparison, can come with side effects, though they're usually mild and last only a day or two. Some of the the most commonly reported side effects, usually among women, include headaches, fatigue, chills, nausea, and dizziness, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-worse-side-effects-from-covid-19-vaccine-cdc-study-2021-3">a January CDC report</a> analyzing safety data on the nearly 13 million people who'd received a vaccine. In about 1% of people, the vaccine leads to a fever, which, if persistent and above 102 F, can raise the risk of birth defects and miscarriage in the first trimester. For that reason, experts at <a href="https://www.bmc.org/sites/default/files/documents/covid/COVIDVaccineSharedDecisionMakingInformationfor%20PregnantWoman.pdf">the University of Massachusetts Medical School - Baystate</a> say it's reasonable to delay your vaccine until you're past 12 weeks' gestation.However, that is not an official recommendation. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says a fever can be treated with Tylenol, which is safe in pregnancy and doesn't seem to affect how the vaccines work.<h2>We still need more data on the shot in pregnant people </h2>Researchers don't have clinical trial or long-term data on the vaccine risks to pregnant people, though <a href="https://www.news4jax.com/health/2021/03/01/covid-19-vaccine-trials-underway-for-children-pregnant-women/">research is underway</a>. "Based on how the [Pfizer and Moderna] COVID vaccine works, there should be very little risk to a developing baby," Dr. Jessica Madden, a pediatrician and neonatologist who serves as medical director of <a href="http://aeroflowbreastpumps.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeroflow Breastpumps</a>, told Insider. That's because, like the flu vaccine, the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> vaccines are do not contain live virus."The mRNA in the vaccine acts locally, in the muscle cells surrounding the injection site," she said. "It cannot enter into cells' nucleus, thus it has no effect on DNA. ACOG says the decision should be informed by transmission rates in the community, as well as the individual's risk of severe disease from COVID-19. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pregnant-women-at-risk-severe-covid-19-cant-get-vaccine-2020-12">A pregnant person's</a> occupation and pregnancy complications matter too. It makes more sense, for example, for a pregnant bus driver in a city with high coronavirus rates to get the vaccine than someone who works from home in a small town where transmission is low. Likewise, a pregnant person with gestational <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-diabetes">diabetes</a> would benefit from the vaccine more than one with a low-risk pregnancy. Whatever you choose, Madden said, "you should feel like your decision is respected, and please know that if you choose not to get the vaccine right now, or in the future, that it is OK."
