The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> depreciated 6 paise to a record low of 83.06 against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday due to a stronger greenback overseas and unrelenting foreign fund outflows. Besides, a sell-off in domestic equities and risk-averse sentiments weighed on the local unit, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 83.05 against the dollar, then slipped further to quote 83.06, a fall of 6 paise over its previous close. The local currency also hit a high of 83.07 in early deals. In the previous session on Wednesday, the rupee plunged 60 paise to end at 83 against the dollar. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.07 per cent to 113.06. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, slipped 0.17 per cent to USD 92.25 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share <keyword id="53232" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bse-sensex" source="Orion">BSE Sensex</keyword> was trading 140.09 points or 0.24 per cent lower at 58,967.10. Similarly, the broader <keyword id="372424" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="Orion">NSE Nifty</keyword> fell 43.95 points or 0.25 per cent to 17,468.30. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets as they offloaded shares worth Rs 453.91 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. Rupee hits record low of 83.06 against US dollar

With levels of poverty, inflation and hunger notwithstanding, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> ranks third in the world's first-ever global study on the rise of centi-millionaires -- individuals with assets of more than Rs 830 crore ($100 million), a new report has revealed. Out of the world's 25,490 centi-millionaires, India has 1,132, beating countries like the UK, Russia and Switzerland, in a swift growing and powerful class of super-rich tech titans, financiers, multinational CEOs, and heirs. By 2032, India will overtake <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> (number 2) as the fastest growing market for centi-millionaires, with an anticipated 80 per cent growth rate in individuals worth over $100 million, the report released by international investment migration advisory firm Henley &amp; Partners stated. "At around 57 per cent, the growth of centi-millionaires in Asia will be twice that of Europe and the US over the next decade. Concentrated primarily in China and India, the centi-millionaires in these countries are set to eclipse their European and American peers," said <keyword id="3996835" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="misha-glenny" source="Orion">Misha Glenny</keyword>, a financial journalist and author. Of the world's 25,490 centi-millionaires, the US, which ranks at number 1, is home to 38 per cent (9,730) of global centi-millionaires, despite constituting only 4 per cent of the world's total population. It is closely followed by big emerging markets of China and India in second and third place, with 2,021 and 1,132 centi-millionaires, respectively. The UK is in fourth place (with 968 centi-millionaires) followed closely by Germany in fifth place (with 966). Switzerland (808), Japan (765), Canada (541), Australia (463), and finally Russia (435) make up the rest of the top 10 countries for centi-millionaires. The report states that in the late 1990s, $30 million was considered the definition of 'super wealthy', but asset prices have risen significantly since then, making $100 million the new benchmark. It further says that the number of centi-millionaires has doubled over the past 20 years, and "their capital accumulation has been dramatically accelerated by the economically and socially disruptive effects of technology and the recent Covid pandemic". While a growing number of younger entrepreneurs who founded successful tech companies are newcomers to the club, Baby Boomers -- people born from 1946 to 1964 -- still tend to dominate the centi-millionaire circle despite many now cashing in their stock options and selling their businesses. India ranks third in rise of centi-millionaires – those with ₹830 cr: Report

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s external debt of $620.7 billion, as at end of March 2022, is sustainable and is being managed in a prudent manner, the <keyword id="144110" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="department-of-economic-affairs" source="Orion">Department of Economic Affairs</keyword>, under the Union Finance Ministry, said. In a recent report, the Department of Economic Affairs said the country's external debt continues to be sustainable and prudently managed. "As at end-March 2022, it stood at $620.7 billion, growing by 8.2 per cent over the level a year ago. External debt as a ratio to GDP (gross domestic product) was 19.9 per cent, while reserves to external debt ratio was 97.8 per cent," the report said. The sovereign debt at $130.7 billion rose higher by 17.1 per cent over its level a year ago, mainly because of additional allocation of special drawing rights (SDR) by the IMF during 2021-22. The non-sovereign debt, on the other hand, grew 6.1 per cent to $490 billion over the level as at end-March 2021. Experts had said that the external debt of $620.7 billion need not be a concern as $490 billion is non-government and the share of government is only $130.8 billion. Of the non-government debt, the share of non-financial corporations was about $250.2 billion. Further, the total debt of $620.7 billion as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 19.9 per cent and the debt service ratio was 5.2 per cent. Experts also said India cannot be compared with Sri Lanka that is in a severe economic crisis. The share of the central government in short term debt - maturing in a year's time- is only $7.7 billion out of the total $267 billion, experts had said. Commercial borrowings, <keyword id="11904949" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nri" source="Orion">NRI</keyword> deposits, and short-term trade credit are the three biggest constituents of the non-sovereign debt, accounting for as much as 95.2 per cent. While NRI deposits declined by two per cent to $139 billion, commercial borrowings at $209.71 billion and short-term trade credit at $117.4 billion rose by 5.7 per cent and 20.5 per cent, respectively. According to the report, the debt vulnerability indicators continued to be benign. The debt service ratio fell significantly to 5.2 per cent during 2021-22 from 8.2 per cent during the previous year, reflecting buoyant current receipts and moderating external debt service payments. The debt service payment obligations arising out of the stock of external debt as at end of March 2022 are projected to trend downwards over the coming years. From a cross-country perspective, India's external debt is modest. In terms of various debt vulnerability indicators, India's sustainability was better than the Low-and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) as a group and vis-a-vis many of them individually. According to the report, the US dollar continues to be the leading currency of denomination accounting for 53.2 per cent of the total as at end March 2022. Deposits in Non Resident (External) <keyword id="8182719" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rupee-accounts" source="Orion">Rupee Accounts</keyword> (NR(E)RA), NRO accounts and <keyword id="725142" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fpi" source="Orion">FPI</keyword> investments in Gsec and corporate bonds are among the components of India's external debt, denominated in Indian rupees. Indian rupee is the second leading currency of denomination with a lower share of 31.2 per cent of the total as at end-March 2022 than 33.3 per cent a year ago, reflecting erosion of outstanding FPI investments in G-Sec and corporate bonds ($50.1 billion from $51.4 billion as at end-March 2021) and balances under NRE accounts ($100.8 billion from $ 102.6 billion). New Delhi: India's <keyword id="19913114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="initial-public-offering" source="keywords">Initial Public Offering</keyword> (IPO) market witnessed a resurgence in 2024, with a total of 272 companies going public compared to 164 during the previous fiscal year, highlights a report by <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="SEBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SEBI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SEBI">SEBI</keyword>. The market regulator SEBI stated that upbeat secondary markets, enthusiasm from retail investors, and strong institutional flows set the stage for a flurry of new listings. "After a relative moderation during 2022-23, the equity segment witnessed a resurgence in fundraising activity during the current fiscal. The <keyword id="19926041" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPO-market" source="keywords">IPO market</keyword> had been vibrant with a total of 272 companies going public as compared to 164 during the last fiscal year," said SEBI. The report also noted that India received the highest <keyword id="20018891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investment" source="keywords">foreign investment</keyword> in the year 2023-24, as the investment surged to a new high of Rs 3.4 lakh crore. It also added that the investment in the year 2023-24 is the highest since the year 1992-93. "Compared to net outflows of Rs 40,936 crore in 2022-23, FPIs invested Rs 3.4 lakh crore in India during 2023-24, which was the highest since 1992-93," said SEBI. SEBI highlighted that Foreign Portfolio Investment and foreign venture capital investment are crucial for emerging economies like India. FY 2023-24 was an exceptional year for India in terms of foreign portfolio investment flows. It added that India's continuing growth resilience, financial stability, reining in of inflation, fiscal consolidation coupled with the persistence of inflation in advanced economies, uncertain geopolitical scenarios, etc., attracted a record level of foreign flows to India. The report noted that in the midst of a subdued global economic scenario with recession risks and monetary tightening, India's economic prospects were bright among emerging markets, driven by a fillip in manufacturing and service sector activities, easing inflation, fiscal consolidation, financial stability, and buoyant <keyword id="20977711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-performance" source="keywords">market performance</keyword>. According to the sector-wise breakup on FPI investment, the report stated that out of the consolidated Rs 64.2 lakh crore equity assets held by FPIs, Rs 18.6 lakh crore were invested in financial services, followed by oil, gas, and consumable fuels (Rs 6.0 lakh crore), information technology (Rs 5.9 lakh crore), and automobile and auto components with Rs 4.8 lakh crore invested.

But all in all, the NDA government is most likely to stay for the full term, and those who bet on the same stand to stay safe despite the surprisingly strong performance of the INDIA alliance.
