From producing 5.8 crore mobile phones and importing 21 crore units in 2014-15, India manufactured 33 crore phones domestically in 2023-24, with only 0.3 crore units imported and nearly 5 crore units exported. The value of mobile phone exports surged from Rs 1,556 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 1,28,982 crore in 2023-24, highlighting substantial growth and reduced import reliance. India, historically a net importer of telecom gear, has seen a transformative shift due to initiatives like <keyword id="20262813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Make-in-India" source="keywords">Make-in-India</keyword> and the PLI scheme, resulting in domestic equipment production valued at over Rs 50,000 crore, read the press release. India's telecom equipment manufacturing sales cross ₹50,000 crore under PLI scheme

The exchange sale offers will be of no use once the <keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword> gets rolled out as the GST will be levied on the original price of the item and not the exchange price. 
 
For instance, if you buy a new laptop for Rs 50,000 and in case you take the exchange offer and get it for Rs 45,000, the GST will be levied on Rs 50,000. 
In the draft valuation rules, in cases where the supply of goods is not wholly in money, the value of the supply will be its open market value. 
 
Various stores and online marketplaces roll out exchange offers for mobiles, laptops, TVs, washing machines, etc. 
 
"Currently, in most states (Gujarat being a notable exception), VAT is payable on the money consideration paid by a customer. Under the proposed draft rules, the supply value will be the market value of the goods itself. The differential levy, which arises owing to non-adjustment of the value of the old product, will pinch the pocket of an individual customer (say a salaried employee) who cannot claim any input tax credit for the GST borne by him," Badri Narayanan, partner at law firm Lakshmikumaran &amp; Sridharan, told ET. 
 
The valuation draft rules also provide that the value of supply of services by an agent for booking of air travel tickets shall be 5% of the basic fare in case of domestic and 10% in case of international travel. This remains the same as current rates, even as the industry had recommended that a lower rate be introduced under GST. 
 
"However, if the GST on air travel is higher than the current rate of 15%, say 18%, it would also have a cascading impact on booking costs. In such an eventuality, the customer would pay more for air travel," Narayanan told ET.

Out of these, Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for <keyword id="626905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-iPhones">Apple iPhones</keyword>. Apple (37 per cent) and Samsung (22 per cent) together account for nearly 60 per cent of global sales revenue of mobile phones and this scheme is expected to increase their manufacturing base manifold in the country, an official statement said. "The international mobile phone manufacturing companies that are approved under mobile phone (invoice value Rs 15,000 and above) segment are Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron," it said. The domestic companies approved for mobile phone manufacturing under the scheme are Lava, Bhagwati (<keyword id="71696" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus Electronics. These companies are expected to expand their manufacturing operations in a significant manner. Further, six companies approved under the Specified Electronic Components Segment are AAT&amp;S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra and Neolync. The PLI scheme for large scale electronics manufacturing notified on April 1, 2020, extends an incentive of 4-6 per cent on incremental sales (over base year) of goods under target segments that are manufactured in India to eligible companies, for a period of five years subsequent to the base year (FY2019-20). In total, the ministry has approved the applications of 16 companies under the scheme. As per the ministry, the companies approved under the scheme will bring additional investment in electronics manufacturing to the tune of Rs 11,000 crore. The companies will also generate more than 2 lakh direct employment opportunities in the next five years along with creation of additional indirect employment of nearly 3 times the direct employment, the statement said. "The PLI scheme has been a huge success in terms of the applications received from global as well as domestic mobile phone manufacturing companies and electronic components manufacturers," a tweet by the ministry quoted Union Minister for Electronics and IT, <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>, as saying. Samsung, Foxconn and Pegatron among 16 companies to get government nod to boost mobile manufacturing in India

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Calling the production-linked incentive scheme a "game changer", industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association on Tuesday said that the scheme will help boost growth in mobile phone manufacturing in India as well as meet exports targets assigned under the National Policy on Electronics (NPE 2019). "This scheme is a game changer for the nation and the industry," Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, said in a statement. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday launched three major schemes to boost manufacture of electronics in the country. The minister launched the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme, which were approved by the Union Cabinet in March. The three schemes would entail an outlay of about Rs 50,000 crore. According to the IT Ministry, India's production of electronics grew from $29 billion in 2014 to $70 billion in 2019. The growth in mobile phone manufacturing in particular has been remarkable during this period. From just two mobile phone factories in 2014, India now has become the second largest mobile phone producer in the world, the IT Ministry said. Production of mobile handsets in 2018-19 reached 29 crore units worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore from just six crore units worth Rs 19,000 crore in 2014. 40% of India's mobiles export in 2022-23 are iPhones: India G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant

E-commerce firm <keyword id="4225623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-Mall">Paytm Mall</keyword> has recorded a surge in demand for non-essential items like mobile phones and laptops that are required to support work from home, and academic material during the ongoing lockdown, the company said on Wednesday. The platform has recorded over 3.5 lakh requests for non-essential products with demand for mobile phones rising 200 per cent. <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> Mall senior vice-president Srinivas Mothey in a statement said that items like laptops, mobile phones computer accessories that facilitate work from home should be included in the list of essential items. "... we believe that the ambit of essential goods should be increased. India is mostly working from home at the moment but many are finding it difficult as they are running low on certain items necessary to effectively operate under lockdown. "Laptops, mobile phones, and accessories, computer hardware, webcams, all these things should be allowed to be part of essential goods," Mothey said. The company said that lakhs of customers over the last five weeks have earmarked their 'wishlist' on Paytm Mall, in hopes of buying them immediately after the end of lockdown. "Mobile phones which are important parts of life are seeing upwards of 75,000 requests, while 50,000 of Paytm Mall users are waiting for the lockdown to end to buy laptops. Demand for laptop charging cords, phone chargers, headphones, desktop computers, and study tables are also on an all-time high," the statement said. The company said that it has received over two lakh e-mails and 3.5 lakh requests in the comments section for delivering laptops, mobile phones, headphones, trimmers, chargers, academic books and other study materials, consumer electronics as well as white goods since the lockdown was imposed to contain coronavirus infection. According to the data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, around 97 per cent of broadband connections in the country are accessed through mobile devices. The government has allowed telecom services to support work from home during the lockdown but people are unable to buy mobile devices and related accessories due to restrictions during the lockdown. "If the lockdown continues, lack of proper technical support would hinder the efficiency of employees which in turn would affect a company's operations," Mothey said. GlobeSherpa has already rolled out <a href="http://trimet.org/mobiletickets/howto.htm#buyingtickets">a ticketing app</a> utilizing QR codes for Portland's TriMet transit agency, and last month <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/trimet-selects-globesherpa-to-develop-next-generation-mobile-apps-272274931.html">won a contract</a> to expand the Portland app to accept smartphone tickets using <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/near-field-communication-can-still-become-the-in-store-mobile-payments-standard-2014-8">contactless NFC</a> and Bluetooth Low Energy technology.
As the illustration below shows, fares are paid within the Portland app, including 14-day and monthlong passes. The app can then display a ticket with a QR code on the phone screen, which allows bus operators or fare collectors to accept the e-ticket.

San Francisco's Muni already utilizes contactless fare collection for its Clipper Card smart fare cards (contactless cards are waved or tapped at a terminal instead of being fed into a reader). This technology could be adapted to NFC-capable smartphones, according to the GlobeSherpa executive. 
San Francisco's proposed project could raise the profile of mobile payments - and do so in a center of financial technology innovation and investment. 
Other U.S. transit agencies, including <a href="http://www.mbta.com/fares_and_passes/mticketing/">Boston</a> and <a href="http://www.njtransit.com/var/var_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=MobileTicketingTo">Newark's</a> regional commuter systems, have rolled out smartphone ticketing, touting increased customer convenience and lower equipment costs on fare card vending machines, <a href="http://www.citylab.com/commute/2013/01/finally-transit-ticket-your-smart-phone/4414/">which can cost</a> as much as $50,000.
But the Muni's roughly 700,000 daily riders would make it one of the largest U.S. municipal transit agencies to implement smartphone ticketing.

San Francisco's Public Transit Agency Is In Talks To Build A Smartphone Ticketing App

As <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> doubles down on local <keyword id="6362048" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="Orion">manufacturing</keyword>, <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> assembled iPhones worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore in India in 2023, according to industry data. Industry sources told IANS on Tuesday that out of Rs 1 lakh crore, Apple exported iPhones worth approximately Rs 65,000 crore to other countries. However, according to industry sources, the actual market value of the iPhones manufactured/assembled in India could be much higher, depending on taxes in other countries. The Economic Times was first to report about Apple's manufacturing data in the country. Apple's manufacturing in India is part of the goals set under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Riding on the local manufacturing growth, mobile phone exports from the country surpassed $9 billion (more than Rs 75,000 crore) from April to November in the current fiscal year, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). Led by Apple, India is set to cross $15 billion (over Rs 1,24,000 crore) in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year (FY24), posting a growth of 35 per cent over the last fiscal year. Apple's revenue in India hit nearly Rs 50,000 crore in FY23, with sales increasing 48 per cent to Rs 49,321 crore and net profit rising 76 per cent to Rs 2,229 crore -- fastest growth of net profit for Apple in India in the last five years. Driven by domestic manufacturing, Apple iPhones were set to garner around 7 per cent market share in the Android-dominated smartphone market in India in 2023. The country is now the second-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones due to heavy investment from original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers and companies dealing in components and parts. The mobile phone exports are anticipated to account for about 58 per cent of the overall electronics exports in FY24, compared to around 47 per cent in the previous fiscal year. Apple is aiming to manufacture more than 50 million iPhones in India per year, as it aims to shift some of the production out from China. The tech giant aims to achieve the target within the next two to three years, with additional tens of millions of units planned after that, according to reports. If Apple achieves this target, India would account for a quarter of global <keyword id="6354606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iphone" source="Orion">iPhone</keyword> production. China will still remain the largest iPhone producer, a Wall Street Journal report mentioned in December. From Apple to Foxconn, the companies are aiming to leverage domestic capabilities to achieve supply chain diversification and scale up production by manufacturing in the country.
