Celkon has set up its first manufacturing facility in Telangana's Medchal Industrial Estate. This step is predicted to lead to a 7-8% in the Indian brand’s phone prices. 
 
The Rs. 200 Crores worth manufacturing plant will build entry and mid-level price phones initially the company said. 60% of the factory’s produce will essentially be non-smartphones. 
 
 The factory will initially start with four production lines with a capacity to produce 2 lakh units every month. The production lines will be increased to 12 and the production is expected to be around 5 lakh units per month in the next quarter. 
 
The final aim is to touch 10 lakh devices a month, the company added.

Celkon launches manufacturing unit in Telangana

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Calling the production-linked incentive scheme a "game changer", industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association on Tuesday said that the scheme will help boost growth in mobile phone manufacturing in India as well as meet exports targets assigned under the National Policy on Electronics (NPE 2019). "This scheme is a game changer for the nation and the industry," Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, said in a statement. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday launched three major schemes to boost manufacture of electronics in the country. The minister launched the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme, which were approved by the Union Cabinet in March. The three schemes would entail an outlay of about Rs 50,000 crore. According to the IT Ministry, India's production of electronics grew from $29 billion in 2014 to $70 billion in 2019. The growth in mobile phone manufacturing in particular has been remarkable during this period. From just two mobile phone factories in 2014, India now has become the second largest mobile phone producer in the world, the IT Ministry said. Production of mobile handsets in 2018-19 reached 29 crore units worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore from just six crore units worth Rs 19,000 crore in 2014. The three new schemes unveiled on Tuesday are expected to attract substantial investments, increase production of mobile phones and their components to around Rs 10 lakh crore by 2025 and generate around five lakh direct and 15 lakh indirect jobs, the ministry said. --IANS gb/na

PLI scheme a 'game changer' for mobile manufacturing: ICEA

New Delhi, June 11 (IANS) With a three-pronged strategy (restart, restore and resurgence), India can achieve $100 billion in mobile phones and nearly $40 billion in component exports by 2025, a new report said on Thursday. The strategy document titled "Mobile Manufacturing in a post-COVID-19 World" by industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and consultancy major EY, offers a roadmap for the Indian industry to become a global supplier of mobile phones in a world where two countries -- China and Vietnam -- and five global companies dominate over 80 per cent of the world's export market. Nearly 198 countries import mobile phones, and till recently, only two countries -- China and Vietnam -- were among the exporters. India joined the ranks as a third with a modest $3 billion exports in 2019-20. It now aims to target the number two spot. "The mobile manufacturing and components sector is ready to lead India's post COVID-19 exit strategy. Production has restarted. We hope to hit 100% production by August," Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, told reporters in a video call. India earlier this month launched three major schemes to boost manufacture of electronics in the country -- Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme. The three schemes would entail an outlay of about Rs 50,000 crore. "As the PLI scheme kicks in, we plan to ramp up global exports from India. There isn't a moment left to waste," Mohindroo added. He said that the Indian mobile phone manufacturing industry is moving forward harmoniously. "There is no such this as a domestic lobby and an international lobby here...We cannot work only on the supposedly big Indian market. We will have to export," he said, adding that in the next four to five years the big global companies will be manufacturing in India for their global exports. ICEA represents mobile and component manufacturers such as Apple, Motorola, Xiaomi, Nokia, Foxconn, Wistron, Flextronics, Lava, Vivo and others. The plan prepared by ICEA and EY which aims at transforming mobile manufacturing and components into India's largest export within the next 3-4 years, aligns closely with the government's National Policy on Electronics (NPE-2019). "The introduction of the incentive schemes like PLI, SPECS and EMC will bring resurgence in the manufacturing environment and create a competitive global ecosystem for India to capture the global market share of mobile phones, parts and accessories," said Bipin Sapra, Indirect Tax Partner Telecom sector, EY India. The report also pointed out areas of improvement, such as the need to shift large-scale global value chains, reduce cost of inputs and the need to increase competitiveness by building a low-cost domestic ecosystem and seeking partnership with states to address India's disabilities. India mobile handset industry can reach $100bn in exports by 2025: ICEA-EY

The <keyword id="6361265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Excise-and-Customs">Central Board of Excise and Customs</keyword> (CBEC) brought some good news for local manufacturers of mobile phones, laptops, which will also give a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. 
 
The apex indirect taxes body, CBEC, has said that only those manufacturing goods in India can enjoy a concessional 2% duty regime without availing of tax credit on inputs, not importers who will have to pay 12.5% countervailing duty. 
 
Apart from domestic mobile phones, laptops and tablets manufacturers, coal producers will also gain from this directive. 
 
Earlier, this advantage to local manufacturers was taken away by the Supreme Court judgement. In a case related to SRF Ltd, the top court had directed that importers could avail of lower duty regime if they did not take tax credits. 
 
Reportedly, this had risked plans of foreign investors such as Foxconn Technology Group and Softbank to set up manufacturing facilities in the country and had also placed at a disadvantage the existing plants of Samsung Electronics Co. and Huawei Technologies Co. 
 
"In case of mobile phones, appropriate duty would need to be paid on inputs to be able to avail the benefit of concessional rates on final products. Accordingly, assembly of parts alone may not be a beneficial proposition," Bipin Sapra, a partner at EY, told Economic Times. 
 
The Modi-led India government has been trying to boost domestic manufacture of electronic goods in view of large domestic market being serviced mainly by imports. 
The financial daily reported that India shipped in almost $37 billion worth of telecom instruments, computer hardware and peripherals, electronic instruments and components, and consumer electronics goods in FY15, a 14% rise over the previous year.

Domestic mobile phones and laptops manufacturers get tariff advantage once again, thanks to CBEC

As <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> doubles down on local <keyword id="6362048" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="Orion">manufacturing</keyword>, <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> assembled iPhones worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore in India in 2023, according to industry data. Industry sources told IANS on Tuesday that out of Rs 1 lakh crore, Apple exported iPhones worth approximately Rs 65,000 crore to other countries. However, according to industry sources, the actual market value of the iPhones manufactured/assembled in India could be much higher, depending on taxes in other countries. The Economic Times was first to report about Apple's manufacturing data in the country. Apple's manufacturing in India is part of the goals set under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Riding on the local manufacturing growth, mobile phone exports from the country surpassed $9 billion (more than Rs 75,000 crore) from April to November in the current fiscal year, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). Led by Apple, India is set to cross $15 billion (over Rs 1,24,000 crore) in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year (FY24), posting a growth of 35 per cent over the last fiscal year. Apple's revenue in India hit nearly Rs 50,000 crore in FY23, with sales increasing 48 per cent to Rs 49,321 crore and net profit rising 76 per cent to Rs 2,229 crore -- fastest growth of net profit for Apple in India in the last five years. Driven by domestic manufacturing, Apple iPhones were set to garner around 7 per cent market share in the Android-dominated smartphone market in India in 2023. The country is now the second-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones due to heavy investment from original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers and companies dealing in components and parts. The mobile phone exports are anticipated to account for about 58 per cent of the overall electronics exports in FY24, compared to around 47 per cent in the previous fiscal year. Apple is aiming to manufacture more than 50 million iPhones in India per year, as it aims to shift some of the production out from China. The tech giant aims to achieve the target within the next two to three years, with additional tens of millions of units planned after that, according to reports. If Apple achieves this target, India would account for a quarter of global <keyword id="6354606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iphone" source="Orion">iPhone</keyword> production. China will still remain the largest iPhone producer, a Wall Street Journal report mentioned in December. From Apple to Foxconn, the companies are aiming to leverage domestic capabilities to achieve supply chain diversification and scale up production by manufacturing in the country.

Apple exported 'India-made' iPhones worth Rs 65,000 crore in 2023

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Imported mobile phones and chargers may cost 1-2 per cent more as the government on Saturday announced increasing customs duty by 5-10 per cent.
 But industry observers say the hike in import duty will not affect consumers at large, as nearly 97 per cent of mobile market requirements is being met through domestic production.
 The government has also announced that it will come up with a new scheme to encourage domestic manufacturing of mobile phones, electronic equipment and semiconductor packaging in order to make India a part of the global manufacturing chain and boost employment opportunities.
 "Under Make in India initiative, well laid out customs duty rates were pre-announced for items like mobile phones, electric vehicles and their components. This has ensured gradual increase in domestic value addition capacity in India. Customs duty rates are being revised on electric vehicles, and parts of mobiles as part of such carefully conceived Phased Manufacturing Plans," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the Budget speech.
 Mobile phones were earlier exempted from 10 per cent service welfare cess but it will now be re-imposed on imported handsets over and above existing 20 per cent basic customs duty.
 The hike in import duty will not affect consumers in India much because 97 per cent of mobile market requirements is being met through domestic production, according to industry experts.
 The finance minister announced increase in duty on chargers from 15 per cent to 20 per cent, motherboard from 10 per cent to 20 per cent and in similar range for other components used in manufacturing of mobile phones.
 The government, however, deferred imposition of import duty on touch panels and cover glass for mobile phones to October 1, 2020 instead of April 1, 2020 as was envisaged in the phased manufacturing plans.
 "Regarding the duty increase on PCBA (motherboards) from 10 per cent to 20 per cent and chargers from 15 per cent to 20 per cent, India has already built very large capacities. This change will lead to further manufacturing of 10 crore plus PCBAs and 5 crore-plus chargers in India," ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said.
 Vivo India Director for Brand Strategy Nipun Marya said: "We established our manufacturing facility in the first year of our operations in India. In 2019, we had successfully integrated SMT lines (assembly lines) in our facility in Greater Noida, and ever since have been manufacturing PCBs (motherboard) there".
 According to Counterpoint Research, Vivo was second largest smartpone player in the last quarter of 2019 in terms of sales with 21 per cent market share.
 India has also started exporting chargers for both mobile phones and laptops. It is estimated that domestic charger production in India is to the tune of Rs 1 lakh crore. The fresh import duty may encourage production of another Rs 5,000 crore worth of chargers.
 "Increase in import duty of mobile phone components such as display panel, touch panel, microphone, receiver and printed-circuit- board to 10 per cent from nil, will ensure further Indianisation of products and increase intensity of production in India," EY emerging markets TMT leader Prashant Singhal said.
 The government's decision to crackdown on non genuine imports under free trade agreement is expected to give further boost to manufacturing of mobile and electronic products.
 IT hardware body MAIT appreciated incentives in the Budget for mobile phone industry.
 MAIT President Nitin Kunkolienker suggested that "the government needs to include IT, Datacom, Medical and other subsectors of electronics. While the scheme is still in the works this will result in rise in exports from India."
 He said the government's announcement to support setting up of data centers will have direct impact in spurring demand for networking products and servers.
 "The new proposed scheme to promote domestic electronic manufacturing must include networking and servers. The other aspect of this measure is it is setting the back end foundation for small cell 5G network. Which when it comes will again result in demand for networking products," Kunkolienker said.
 The government has also proposed increase in import duty on mobile base station by 10 per cent which is expected to make deployment of telecom network in the country expensive as over 90 per cent of telecom network gears are currently imported.

India surpasses ₹85,000 cr worth mobile phone exports in FY23

Sales of telecom equipment have surpassed the Rs 50,000 crore milestone under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. India's telecom equipment manufacturing sales cross ₹50,000 crore under PLI scheme

India to cross $10 billion worth mobile exports in FY22-23, Apple leads at 50%

New Delhi, Feb 1 () The government on Saturday said it will introduce a new scheme to encourage domestic manufacturing of mobile phones, electronic equipment and semiconductor packaging in order to make India a part of the global manufacturing chain and boost employment opportunities.
 "I propose a scheme focussed on the manufacturing of mobile phones, electronic equipment and semiconductor packaging. The details will be announced soon," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while presenting the Budget for 2020-21.
 She added that with suitable modification, this scheme can be adopted for manufacturing of medical devices as well.
 "India needs to manufacture networked products that will make it a part of the global value chain. This, in turn, gets more investments and generates more employment for our youth," Sitharaman said.
 She added that electronics manufacturing industry is very competitive and India has shown its cost advantage.
 Sitharaman pointed out that the potential of job creation in this segment is immense.
 "India needs to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in the electronics value chain," she said.
 On Friday, President Ram Nath Kovind had said India is making rapid strides in electronics production and has emerged as the second largest mobile phone manufacturing hub globally.
 The value of electronic equipment manufactured in the country has increased to Rs 4.58 lakh crore in 2018-19, from Rs 1.90 lakh crore in 2014-15.
 Over the last few years, the government has been bullish on making India a manufacturing base for the world and has set a target to promote domestic manufacturing in the entire value-chain of ESDM (electronic system design and manufacturing) to achieve a turnover of USD 400 billion (Rs 26 lakh crore) by 2025.
 For mobile handset segment alone, the government, under the National Policy on Electronics 2019, had set a target of making 100 crore mobile handsets indigenously by 2025, valued at about Rs 13 lakh crore.
 Out of the 100-crore mobile handset manufacturing target, 60 crore units will be for exports valued at about Rs 7 lakh crore.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has approved the applications of <keyword id="10591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> Hon Hai, <keyword id="274256" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pegatron">Pegatron</keyword>, Rising Star and <keyword id="1930805" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wistron">Wistron</keyword> from among the international applicants for manufacturing of <keyword id="38260" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phones">mobile phones</keyword> in India under the government's Production-Linked Incentive scheme. Out of these, Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for <keyword id="626905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-iPhones">Apple iPhones</keyword>. Apple (37 per cent) and Samsung (22 per cent) together account for nearly 60 per cent of global sales revenue of mobile phones and this scheme is expected to increase their manufacturing base manifold in the country, an official statement said. "The international mobile phone manufacturing companies that are approved under mobile phone (invoice value Rs 15,000 and above) segment are Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron," it said. The domestic companies approved for mobile phone manufacturing under the scheme are Lava, Bhagwati (<keyword id="71696" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus Electronics. These companies are expected to expand their manufacturing operations in a significant manner. Further, six companies approved under the Specified Electronic Components Segment are AAT&amp;S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra and Neolync. The PLI scheme for large scale electronics manufacturing notified on April 1, 2020, extends an incentive of 4-6 per cent on incremental sales (over base year) of goods under target segments that are manufactured in India to eligible companies, for a period of five years subsequent to the base year (FY2019-20). In total, the ministry has approved the applications of 16 companies under the scheme. As per the ministry, the companies approved under the scheme will bring additional investment in electronics manufacturing to the tune of Rs 11,000 crore. The companies will also generate more than 2 lakh direct employment opportunities in the next five years along with creation of additional indirect employment of nearly 3 times the direct employment, the statement said. Samsung, Foxconn and Pegatron among 16 companies to get government nod to boost mobile manufacturing in India

New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) The global mobile phone market is served primarily by five companies (Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo) and the time is ripe for India to integrate into the global value chain by providing an assembly platform to these global lead firms, according to a new report. India has already attracted initial investments from all these five companies that command 83 per cent global mobile phone revenue, which may bring more manufacturing to the country in order to reach out to global markets, according to the report by the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and consultancy major EY. Currently, Indian companies like Lava and Micromax are producing mobile phones primarily for the domestic market. "These companies are yet to plug in to global value chain manufacturing in a significant manner. Domestic companies may begin by turning into white label producers for international companies and in the process refine their own capabilities," the report mentioned. India can ride on the distribution and retail networks of these companies to plug into the global value chain. The country has a young population that is willing to work and the manufacturing sector can provide them with job opportunities. "Currently, India does not have in-house technology and R&amp;D. Global lead firms can bring in advanced and cutting-edge technology that may not only aid the production processes of global lead firms but also domestic firms," said the report. However, in order to cater to the global markets, India needs to address a plethora of structural and governance issues. It is estimated that India suffers from various disabilities like high cost of power, tax and ease of doing business. This renders India almost 10-20 per cent less competitive than Vietnam and China, respectively. "India must address these disability issues in the long run. Meanwhile, in the short run, the government shall endeavour to offset these disabilities by providing incentives which are WTO-compliant, easy to implement and help India take off from the export runway," the report suggested. In the last 5 years, India has tried substituting imports of mobile phones and parts by imposing duties on imports of finished mobile phones and parts like batteries, chargers, wired headsets under the Phased Manufacturing Programme. While import substitution partially arrested the import of finished mobile phones due to shift of assembling operations to India, the imports of parts and components continued due to lack of volumes within India. "The plausible way through which India can increase volumes leading to build up of the domestic ecosystem appears to be exports," said the ICEA-EY report. India appears to have all necessary ingredients in place to encourage mobile manufacturing at scale and boost exports from the country. "The only piece that appears to be missing so far is the policy support to attract lead firms, incentivise production and unveil measures that provide cost competitiveness to industry or help offset the disabilities suffered by Indian firms vis-a-vis Vietnam and China," the report emphasised. --IANS na/
