Technology has certainly made lives easier, and while this fact holds true for almost all facets of life, travel and especially air travel is a sector that has benefitted a lot from the use of technology, helping both users and providers.<br />
 <br />
A survey in fact says more and more air passengers in India are now choosing technology over human interaction, so that they have more choice and control in how they manage their trip.<br />
 <br />
The survey, conducted by SITA, the communications and IT solution provider, also revealed that such online bookings, using a mobile or with an agent, resulted in 93% passengers having a positive experience.<br />
 <br />
Here are the reports’ findings in a nutshell:<br />

· 92% Passengers said that they would like to book their flight using self-service technology instead of relying on agents.<br />
<br />
· 57% of the passengers use self-service technology, like mobiles, to check-in; out of these, 92% find it easier as compared to manual check-ins.<br />
<br />
· More than half of the passengers also said that using technology for payment feels more secure.<br />
<br />
· 54% of the passengers who have had a negative experience will try a different self-service technology the next time.<br />
<br /> · While on the airport, 40% of the passengers pass their time by <keyword id="3415544" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="online-airport-shopping">online airport shopping</keyword>.<br />
<br />
· Passengers also said that they want more mobile services and baggage notifications to be treated as top priorities, the latter being recommended by 76% passengers.<br />
<br />
· 65% Passengers said that they access entertainment services from their own devices, and 46% said that they watch movies on their devices while travelling.<br />
<br />
· 56% Passengers who use self-service baggage bag-drop plan said that they would like to use it again.<br />
<br />
· Also, 88% of the passengers said that a waiting time of 10 minutes or less while collecting their baggage would make them happier. <br />

India’s air traveller trusts technology over humans, says this survey

Mumbai, Jun 8 () A group of IIT-Guwahati students has developed a mobile application for seamless and contactless air travel not only during the current pandemic but also during non-crisis situations. <p>The aim of the mobile app Flyzy, developed as per International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines, is to provide contactless boarding, keeping in mind the easier baggage drop, manageable parking, better shopping experience and providing necessary updates during the whole journey, IIT-Guwahati said in a release. </p><p>Developed by a group of three B Tech students -- Deepak Meena, Hansraj Patel and Arjit Singh -- under a startup, the app also has a smart UI (user interface) assistant that helps elderly people to use it easily. Other features of the application include real-time flight notifications, universal web check-in portal, check-in baggage status and map of the airport. </p><p>According to the release, the hybrid software will support face-biometric recognition in future, without even changing the complete software system of the airport and is secured as the app is hosted on the cloud. </p><p>Proper IATA and DGCA guidelines were followed in the development of the app, it said. </p><p>The mission of the startup, which has been recognised by the Startup India, is to build Flyzy as India's finest aviation IT technology company for providing a stress-free and safe journey to flyers, the release said. </p><p>The passengers can shop from the airport using the app and can make payment as well, besides they can either opt for the takeaway or gate delivery option. Flyzy also supports multi-currency payments. </p><p>For food ordering purposes, the app dynamically suggests the passenger the best option he/she could choose, based on the flight status. For instance, if the flight departs in one hour, the app will suggest to the passenger the food items that could be prepared within the available time, as per the release. </p><p>The idea is not only relevant during the present pandemic situation but also during the non-crisis time, the release said, adding the main idea behind the application is to provide a seamless journey to passengers as they move through the airport, especially to the first-time flyers. </p><p>The application will guide them thoroughly and provide them with an easy understanding and implementation of several airport functions, it said. </p><p>The founders believe that the application will help the aviation industry save money as the process will become automated, faster and easier. </p>The company provides an end-to-end service at a low infrastructure cost. The team is already in the process of talking to the authorities for implementing the application at some airports, IIT-Guwahati said. IAS BAL

IIT-Guwahati students develop mobile app for contactless air travel

One of the biggest concerns for any airline passenger is arriving at their destination but their baggage does not. The good news is that increased digitization, automation and other smart baggage systems have over the past few years contributed to a significant drop in the number of mishandled bags globally.<br />

According to the 2016 SITA Baggage Report, baggage mishandling rates have plunged 65.3% between 2007 and 2015, saving the air transport industry around US$22.4 billion and increasing passenger confidence in airlines’ ability to delivery baggage on time.<br />
<br />
Given technology’s role in these achievements, it’s no wonder that investment in further baggage systems automation and processes remains high on the agenda for most airlines and airports.<br />
<br />
The challenge is to further reduce mishandled baggage rates over the next few years while passenger numbers globally are expected to double from today’s 3.3-billion passengers by the mid-2030s.<br />

Bag tracking<br />

The industry’s continued sharp focus on smarter baggage is imperative to further reducing baggage mishandling rates. A key industry priority is to keep track of passengers’ bags through all major stages of the journey – helping improve the travel experience, save money and keep passengers in the know.<br />
<br /> Bag tracking is also a crucial focus area given the demands of <keyword id="64233" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IATA">IATA</keyword>’s Resolution 753, which requires airlines keep tabs on every item of baggage from start to finish and to maintain an accurate inventory of baggage by monitoring the acquisition and delivery of baggage. The resolution will come into effect in June 2018.<br />

SITA’s new BagJourney will help airlines and airports track bags every step of the way as well as provide the possibility of sharing those updates with their passengers.<br />

In fact, it’s an innovative solution that enables passengers to track their bag like they would a parcel and is able to follow each bag from check-in to final delivery through multiple airports and airlines.<br />
<br />
SITA 2016 Passenger IT Trends Survey shows that 79% of passengers said they would definitely use a mobile bag notification service while two-thirds said they would use mobile to report missing baggage at the airport.<br />
<br />
With 95% of passengers carrying a smart mobile device when traveling, there’s now the huge potential for airlines and airports to provide them with real-time information about the status of their bags. It means that passengers’ are no longer waiting for this information to be provided by the airline and have more control over their baggage.<br />

BagJourney mines the 2.5 billion baggage information messages (BIMs) which SITA manages on behalf of the airlines and airports in its BagMessage message distribution service to provide a real-time status on each and every bag. More than 220 airports and 500 airlines around the world use BagMessage to exchange information on the location of passengers’ baggage.<br />

It’s also uniquely integrated with WorldTracer – the only truly global tracing and matching service of delayed bags. This allows a bag’s journey to continue to be tracked even if it’s mishandled.<br />

real-time bag tracking

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11910935" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="american-airlines" source="Orion">American Airlines</keyword> has had a less than stellar track record for reliability this summer. </li><li>Overscheduling and a lack of flight crews have resulted in thousands of canceled flights. </li><li>I'm preparing a backup plan and taking additional measures to ensure I don't get affected when traveling on the airline. </li></ul><p>For many travelers this summer, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-american-canceled-hundred-of-flights-and-delayed-more-2021-8">American Airlines hasn't been the most reliable airline</a>.</p><p>The world's largest airline prior to the pandemic has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-cancel-canceled-flights-per-day-labor-shortage-weather-2021-6">canceled thousands of flights since Memorial Day amidst a hasty summer ramp-up that left countless summer travelers in the lurch</a>. A combination of overscheduling and a flight crew shortage left the airline struggling to meet its on-time obligations, especially when bad weather struck. </p><p>I personally swore I'd avoid <keyword id="11896631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flying" source="Orion">flying</keyword> American after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stranded-in-bogota-colombia-airport-terminal-2021-6">two canceled flights left me almost stranded in Bogotá, Colombia</a>. Here's how I'm prepping to ensure American doesn't get the best of me again.  </p><h2>Having a backup plan ready</h2><div type="image" title="American Airlines reservation line" height="620" width="827" msid="85925612" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm flying from New York to Doha, Qatar via Madrid with the first leg on American and the second on Qatar Airways. Before I even arrived at the airport, I'll know exactly what time the next flights to both Madrid and Doha leave New York so that I can move quickly to be rebooked on either should American delay or cancel my flight.</p><p>And because American partners with Iberia, British Airways, and Qatar Airways, among other <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword>, I'll have a pretty good shot at getting a seat. But I don't want to leave my rebooking options in the hands of an agent.</p><p>Rather, I'll know exactly what backup options there are and suggest the flights so that I'm in control. There also happens to be a non-stop flight to Doha leaving just under four hours after my original flight, and if that doesn't work out then I can try for British Airways through London or Royal Jordanian through Amman, Jordan, among other possibilities. </p><p>Planning for the worst, I've found, helps hedge against panic and stress in uncontrollable situations. It's the airline's job to get me where I need to go but I can help speed that along while keeping my sanity at the same time.</p><p>This tip can also be applied when flying any airline during the COVID-19 pandemic. Proper preparation can help ensure success as flight schedules are constantly changing and many airlines have a reduced ability to recover from irregular events such as storms or mechanical troubles. </p><h2>Staying close to a customer service desk</h2><div type="image" title="Trapped in Airport Terminal" height="1875" width="2500" msid="85925614" hostid="261"></div><p>Having a plan, however, is only the first step. Next comes its execution.</p><p>I won't likely be able to just go on my phone and change my own flights in the event something goes wrong. So when I get to the airport, the first thing I'll do after going through the security checkpoint and having a bit of lunch at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/using-priority-pass-restaurant-perk-with-chase-sapphire-reserve-card-2021-6">newly-reopened Priority Pass restaurant in the American terminal</a> is find where the airline's customer service centers are.</p><p>This is where agents can assist with rebooking in the event something goes wrong. And as there's almost always a long line when flights get canceled, being quick to get there first is essential. </p><p>I plan to stay as close as possible before boarding just in case I get the dreaded delay or cancellation notification to which I've become accustomed when flying American.</p><h2>Preemptively calling the airline</h2><div type="image" title="American Airlines flight status" height="1293" width="1725" msid="85925617" hostid="261"></div><p>Hold times have been markedly longer during the pandemic and calling an airline can now be an all-day affair. </p><p>To avoid having to wait on hold, I'll call American around seven hours before my flight to see what the hold times are like. If they're greater than say, six hours, I'll use the callback feature to get in line.</p><p>That way, if anything goes wrong with my flight before departure and I can't get to a customer service center, I'll have a place in the reservations phone line.</p><p>It's not exactly scientific and requires a bit of luck but it's a good backup.</p><p>And at the very first sign of trouble, I'll jump on Twitter to send American a direct message since that can be quicker than waiting on hold. The airline also has a chat function on its mobile application that may prove expedient.</p><h2>Getting to the airport unnecessarily early</h2><div type="image" title="Trapped in Airport Terminal" height="1875" width="2500" msid="85925619" hostid="261"></div><p>I normally like to arrive at the airport around an hour before a flight's departure so that I can arrive at the gate just as boarding begins. Being enrolled in the TSA PreCheck program allows me to do this.</p><p>But as this is an international flight on American, I want to get to the airport at least four hours before departure. Again, it might prove to be unnecessary but better safe than sorry.</p><p>I was chatting with a fellow traveler on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-jetblue-new-york-to-london-economy-mint-food-review-2021-8">first JetBlue Airways flight to London in mid-August</a> who told me that he missed his American flight from New York to Madrid because it took so long to get checked in, even though he arrived early.</p><p>It will mean waiting around after security but I'll have my laptop to get some work done and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/using-priority-pass-restaurant-perk-with-chase-sapphire-reserve-card-2021-6">I can use my credit card perk to get a free meal</a>. </p><h2>Downloading the Verifly mobile application</h2><div type="image" title="Trapped in Airport Terminal" height="1044" width="1392" msid="85925621" hostid="261"></div><p>Verifly is American's health passport of choice and allows <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword>ers to upload their required documents for international travel. For Spain, all I need to do is scan the QR code from the country's health control form.</p><p>Using Verifly can also be a "skip the line" tool at some of its airports. In Bogotá, American's check-in counters had dedicated lines for Verifly users, and I'm expecting it to be similar at the airline's John F. Kennedy International Airport hub in New York. </p><p>But even still, I'm still planning to get to the airport earlier than necessary in case there is a wait at check-in. </p><h2>Learning my credit card benefits</h2><div type="image" title="Chase Sapphire Reserve" height="733" width="978" msid="85925625" hostid="261"></div><p>Some travel credit cards, including the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/chase-sapphire-reserve-credit-card-review">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?platform=browser&amp;postSource=bi%7C5d2c9843a17d6c209d453284&amp;sc=false&amp;type=LINK-WITH-REVIEW-SLASH-OUT&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Foc.brcclx.com%2Ft%2F%3Flid%3D26675222%26cr%3D28038%26last_updated%3D1598306940&amp;sessionid=1630077180500sionid=1630077180500">American Express Platinum Card</a>, have built-in travel insurance that can be used in the event of delays or cancellations. </p><p>My Sapphire Reserve, for example, will allow me to spend $500 on incidentals and other expenses if my flight is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay. I used the perk when taking <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/using-chase-sapphire-reserve-trip-insurance-to-cover-delay-expenses-2021-7">American in June and it saved me $127 in expenses</a>. </p><p>Other perks include baggage delay reimbursement in case I have to check my bag and it gets lost, as well as trip interruption/cancellation insurance in the event I get sick or there's bad weather that impacts my trip. </p><p>I can also use the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/orlando-airport-priority-pass-review-the-club-mco-2020-2">Priority Pass perk of this card to go to a lounge</a> or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/using-priority-pass-restaurant-perk-with-chase-sapphire-reserve-card-2021-6">restaurant</a>. It's the perfect perk for waiting out a delay, for example. </p>

I booked a flight on American Airlines despite the airline canceling thousands of flights this summer - here's how I'm preparing for the worst

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Carlos Garcia Rawlins</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Delta <em>really</em> doesn't want to lose people's bags anymore.</p><p>By the end of this year, the company plans to become <a href="http://news.delta.com/delta-introduces-innovative-baggage-tracking-process-0">the first airline to use RFID tags</a> to enhance tracking of all luggage that passes through its system - a move the company is calling "historic."</p><p>The innovation comes on the heels of more than two decades of handheld barcode scanning, which began in the early 1990s as the gold standard for keeping track of baggage. </p><p>The new technology, which stands for Radio Frequency Identification and appears in other industries from shipping services to public libraries, will enable customers to receive push notifications each time their bags enter and exit the plane, and one final time when they hit the carousel. </p><p>Unlike barcode scanning, which only sends information to the handlers, RFID tags can alert both handlers and customers about the bag's status via a mobile network. Delta says the added transparency will give people more peace of mind.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Delta</span></p><p class="caption">One of the new belt scanners tracking RFID tags.</p></div><p></p></div></div>While Delta is the first airline to implement RFID tags, the move isn't new in aviation.</p><p>McCarran Airport in Las Vegas <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/baggage-claim-airlines-are-winning-the-war-on-lost-luggage-1401922595">has been using RFID</a> since 2006, and <a href="http://gizmodo.com/why-the-hell-is-delta-spending-50-million-on-bag-track-1774327898">a number of international airlines</a> have been using RFID tags for years as a way to entice customers to upgrade their tickets.</p><p>In addition, numerous luggage manufacturers have equipped their products with RFID tags for the exact purpose Delta recently announced.</p><p>There's a questionable price tag for the whole project: $50 million.</p><p>As Alissa Walker <a href="http://gizmodo.com/why-the-hell-is-delta-spending-50-million-on-bag-track-1774327898">noted in Gizmodo</a>, Delta's success rate with baggage-handing seems far too high for the airline to invest millions in a solution that would close the gap only slightly.</p><p>Reputation may be the biggest thing at stake. Delta was <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/media/the-5-most-hated-and-liked-u-s-airlines/">recently voted</a> one of the worst airlines in existence, so that $50 million might go toward an <em>image</em> of being forward-thinking, even if the reality is that most people don't lose their bags anyway.</p><p>Once the RFID is fully rolled out, there will be 3,800 tag printers nationwide and 4,600 scanners. There will also be 1,500 scanners on the conveyor belts that load bags on and off planes in an effort to eliminate the need for handlers scanning each bag individually.</p><p>Delta says the process already has a 99.9% success rate in its initial deployment. Delta has a 'historic' new plan to ensure your luggage never gets lost

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Julie Bort</span></p><p class="caption">Microsoft's Julie Larson Green</p></div><p></p></div></div>Microsoft has bought a popular Android app called <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doublelabs.androscreen.echo&amp;hl=en">Echo Notification Lockscreen</a>, which lets you personalize what appears on your phone or tablet when it's in lock mode.</p><p class="p1">This actually makes Echo the second Android lockscreen replacement that Microsoft owns.</p><p class="p1">Last year, the company's Microsoft Garage research division launched the popular <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.next&amp;hl=en">Microsoft Next lockscreen for Android</a>, which promises to provide you enough information and control at a glance that you don't have to unlock your phone nearly as much.</p><p class="p1">It may seem weird that Microsoft would have one lockscreen for Google's Android, let alone two. But Microsoft Chief Experience Officer Julie Larson-Green says it's all in the name of "[taking] productivity to the next level" and "[keeping] you in the moment."</p><p class="p1">The problem with the current default lockscreens on Apple, Android, and even Windows Phone, Larson-Green says, is that it's not at all personalized - it's just a list of alerts, one app at a time.</p><p class="p1">"It's a list of what apps want you to know, not necessarily what's important to you," Larson-Green says.</p><p class="p1">This problem falls right into her role as Chief Experience Officer, which she's held for the year or so since Satya Nadella came into the CEO role at Microsoft and shook things up. A big part of Larson-Green's mandate there is to come up with new ways for people to access their information, in ways that are both contextual and personal.</p><p class="p1">To that end, Android is a great platform for rapid experimentation, Larson-Green says. Android has lots of users (compared to Microsoft's 3% mobile market share), and gives developers like Microsoft a deep access to the operating system compared to Apple. In other words, it's the perfect research testbed.</p><p class="p1">Echo Lockscreen has 50,729 reviews on the Google Play app store at the time of writing: That's a lot of feedback that can make its way back into the product.</p><p class="p1">A lot of what Microsoft comes up with via the Microsoft Next and Echo lockscreens will make it back to Windows 10, Office, and any other Microsoft products that send out notifications.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">Microsoft Next lock screen.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">But by handling it as a separate app first, Larson-Green says, it means that they won't accidentally ship a half-baked or just user-unfriendly feature to the millions of Windows users out there. You will have to remove the watch to go through  security, though.  </p><p><span>These apps can also tell you about any gate changes or delays. And rather than having to open up your phone to see the status of your flight, you'll get a light tap on your wrist if there are any changes made to your flight.  </span></p><p>Besides the basics of when and where your flight will be, you can also check what the weather is in your current destination, if there are any delays at baggage, and real-time currency exchange rates.</p><p>One feature that the easyJet app has that others don't so far is social capability, allowing users to post to Instagram and Facebook straight through the watch.   </p><h2 class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For transportation</span></h2><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Having access to transportation information is crucial when you travel.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Companies like <a href="https://get.uber.com/">Uber</a> and <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hailo/id468420446?mt=8">Hailo</a> have already created apps for the Apple Watch that allow users to hail cars through their watch.
