Through this platform, MakeMyTrip will enable travel agents to offer a variety of travel choices and travel booking convenience for their customers. Currently, the platform is limited to hotels. The premise of the platform builds on the simple notion that India’s travel agents too need to go online with the coronavirus pandemic. The company’s top management said that there have been early shoots in the business since the reopening of the economy but for the sector to grow, everyone – online travel aggregators, travel agents, hotels, and more need to come together. “There are hundreds and thousands of properties in India and abroad, and it is impossible for a travel agent to have a one-on-one equation with each of them. In a world which is digitized, the information is also democratized,” said Vipul Prakash, Chief Operating Officer, MakeMyTrip. The company is currently not charging a subscription fee to the travel agents. However, Prakash shared an overview of the scope of the market, saying that 20% of the overall room nights booked in India today are done by travel agents. Going the omnichannel way Prakash said the country’s thousands of travel agents have a deep understanding of how India travels and how they can make the customer experience better, and the consumer trusts them. OTAs in general, he added, holds the strength that they have built an inventory and relationship with hotels and partners. “myPartner launch brings these two things together. They have the demand but struggle with the supply – this is the right time to collaborate. So all our inventory will now be available for travel agents to book,” he said. With the latest offering, MMT is looking at an omnichannel business approach. MMT’s hope for the industry’s revival based on the pent up demand For the whole of 2020, the travel and tourism industry has come to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic. And avid travellers have had to take a backseat and control their wanderlust. MakeMyTrip earnings results for the April-June quarter also showed the extent of the impact that this pandemic has had on the travel and tourism industry. MMT’s revenues fell by 95.5% from $141.7 million to $6.3 million. But with the hope of a vaccine in the near future and things settling down, Rajesh Magow, CEO, MMT said that there are many encouraging signs in the business already, and it will only get better. “By the end of this fiscal year, overall the business will touch 65-70% of pre-COVID levels. For the domestic market, 50-70% is the estimate, for international, it will be lower. But the caveat here is that the COVID situation keeps improving. The activity is going to be more and more positive from hereon, and there will be a pent up demand once the vaccine is announced,” said Magow. MakeMyTrip opens up its hotel inventory to offline travel agents

MakeMyTrip is a household name in most metros and large cities of India. People of India love to <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> and MakeMyTrip is one of the preferred choices for them to make a reservation (for both airlines and <keyword id="6368036" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hotels">hotels</keyword>). Recently, MMT announced <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> of $15 million <keyword id="306629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Innovation-Fund">innovation fund</keyword> for new entrepreneurs in the travel circuit. We got a chance to catch up with Rajesh Magow, <keyword id="170488" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="co-founder">Co-Founder</keyword> and CEO-India, <keyword id="143717" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Makemytrip-com">MakeMyTrip.com</keyword> and he told us some interesting facts about the journey so far and why did the company decide to raise this fund. 
 
MakeMyTrip has grown by leaps and bounds. Can you give BI India readers a small glimpse of the MMT’s journey till date? 
 
MakeMyTrip.com was founded in the year 2000. Deep Kalra (Founder) conceptualized it with the idea to empower Indian travellers through choice, flexibility and transparency of pricing. The travel industry in 2000 had not achieved momentum yet. There were a couple of websites that offered air-tickets but none that could comprehensively claim to cater across categories (LCCs and full-service) and offer Best Deal and Lowest Airfare Guarantee. 
 
Upon launching the first version of the site in October 2000, we received a favourable response from the US. In India however, travellers were more inclined to research online, but make the actual buying decision using traditional modes of payment. We had to take a hard call to stop all marketing in India; on hindsight this turned out to be one of the best decisions for the company. By focusing solely on the NRI market, we managed to conserve precious marketing dollars while our competitors burnt their fingers in a pre-mature online market. 
 
After consolidating our position in the market as a brand recognized for its reliability and transparency, we launched our India operations in 2005. As the pioneer among Online Travel Companies in India, MakeMyTrip heralded a revolution in the way travel was purchased in India – and soon became the go-to website for booking travel. In 2010 we became the first Indian travel company to list overseas through a successful IPO on NASDAQ. 
 
Today, we are the dominant market-leader with 47% market-share (per a study conducted by PhocusWright in 2013). 
 
MMT like many others has started a venture fund, what was the reason behind it? 
 
We have announced the institution of a $15 million Innovation Fund primarily to support early stage companies/ start-ups in the travel technology space with a special focus on Mobile and IP-based companies. The fund will be focused on young and new ventures in the travel technology space for our market. 
 
This initiative is an additional prong of our inorganic growth strategy of pursuing M&amp;A opportunities in the travel technology space. We intend to purposefully go out and look for such companies and take early stage positions. 
 
What is MMT expectations from this venture funding? 
 
We are excited about the Technology talent in the global marketplace and how it can be leveraged to serve customer needs. We are hopeful that this initiative will encourage entrepreneurs building niche companies in the travel technology domain. 
 
What are the future plans for MMT besides this? 
 
We are already the largest travel company in the country and the largest eCommerce business, recognized for providing the best value-based offerings. In the mid to long-term, we intend to use our core strength i.e. technology to innovate, provide best-in-class service and delight customers.

Innovation Fund, Will Bring New Talent To The Indian Travel Industry

<ul><li><keyword id="6355203" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="qatar" source="Orion">Qatar</keyword> is hosting the 2022 <keyword id="57149" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fifa" source="Orion">FIFA</keyword> World Cup across eight stadiums with an average capacity of 47,500 seats. </li><li>Over 2.45 million FIFA tickets have already been sold with the next ticket window opening in September. </li><li>Doha is a four hour flight from India and Indian travel agencies are offering FIFA World Cup packages. </li></ul>With less than 100 days left for the world’s biggest sporting event FIFA World Cup, tickets are flying off the shelves. As many as 2.45 million tickets are already sold out for Qatar <keyword id="653179" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FIFA-World-Cup-2022" source="Orion">FIFA World Cup 2022</keyword>, and Indians too are planning trips to Doha. It comes as no surprise, since Doha is a four hour flight from India. Even without Indian representation, India has many football fans and the 32-team event with 65 matches across eight avenues, is taking a lot of them to Qatar. “We have booked over 160 travel packages until now. Over 70% of the queries have come from Kolkata. Although the tickets of the most important matches are sold out, we do have executive travel packages for flight and accommodation,” said Adit Sarin, founder of LestacIndia, a travel agency in India. Apart from LestacIndia, agencies like Fanatic Sports, Asia-based travel agency for customized sporting events and Make My Trip too have launched packages for the season. Travel and Ticket Categories for FIFA The average venue capacity of FIFA World Cup venues is 47,500 <a href="https://www.stadiumguide.com/tournaments/fifa-world-cup-2022-stadiums-qatar/">seats</a>. The FIFA federation has divided the tickets into four categories. Tickets for fans are only available in the categories 1, 2 and 3 as category 4 is reserved for Qatar residents. After the launch of the phase 1, 2 and 3 of FIFA tickets, the federation has announced the next sales phase to be launched in <a href="https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/articles/fifa-world-cup-qatar-2022-tm-ticket-sales-reach-2-45-million">September</a>. This last minute sales phase will be allocated on a first-come first serve basis. The most expensive tickets would be from the Category 1 ticket finals costing over ₹1 lakh per person. Other categories are spread across categories 2 and 3 with the cheapest category 4 tickets only reserved for Qatar residents. In total, 65 games will be played at the FIFA World Cup 2022. While many travelers would reside at fan villages and hotels, food can be quite expensive. The average food cost for a tourist in Doha is ₹3,800 per day. “The public transport is free but the stay at the fan village is costly, with $70 per day only for accommodation. But we are excited nevertheless.
