They are proving so through the execution of their ideas. <keyword id="3959620" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mithi-kalra">Mithi Kalra</keyword>, a recent pass out from the <keyword id="3947" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="National-institute-of-fashion-technology">National Institute of Fashion Technology</keyword> has recently showcased her collection at the India Runway Week. 
 <keyword id="51681" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mithi">Mithi</keyword>'s exhibit named the The Indian <keyword id="3959621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="disney-story">Disney Story</keyword>, speaks for itself. Dresses, gowns suited for a Princess, based on the traditonal art of <keyword id="6375095" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Madhubani">Madhubani</keyword>, hand embroidered on pure silks and organza. The collection wonderfully combines the grace of a bygone era, with the modern day fashion. 
 Madhubani painting is practiced in <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>. Painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments, and is characterized by eye-catching geometrical patterns. 
 
So how did the idea came to Mithi? “<keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword> is every childs dream… every girl relates to Disney and its princesses and imagines oneself in some or the other story. I was inspired from the art form of madhubani from a very early age in my life so I thought why not combine best from both the worlds,” said Mithi.

<ul><li>TikTok’s parent company ByteDance launched its <keyword id="8867313" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-music-streaming-app">new music streaming app</keyword> <keyword id="8433078" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="resso">Resso</keyword> in India today.</li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, Resso’s head of music content and partnerships at Resso Hari Nair called the app a “social music streaming experience.”</li><li>He said the aim of the app is to turn ‘passive’ music listening into ‘active’ listening.</li></ul>TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, just launched in a new music streaming app Resso in India. The internet technology company based out of Beijing is entering an already competitive market. It will have to go up against local players like Gaana and Mukesh Ambani-owned JioSaavn as well as international giants like Spotify. Resso is betting that its ‘vibes’ will stand out in the crowded market — a feature in the app that allows the user to post GIFs or short videos to individual songs. The aim is to make the music listening experience more “active” rather than “passive” and create a “social music streaming experience”, according to Resso’s head of music content and partnerships Hari Nair. “There was a clear void between streaming services and social media. Resso connects both of them very nicely,” Nair told Business Insider India. Vibes comes coupled with the comments feature so that listeners can interact with people listening to the same song. The paradox of choice Most popular music streaming apps are open to an explore page where users can browse through playlists and recent releases to choose what they want to listen to. Resso takes an approach that is exactly opposite. Instead of letting you choose, it chooses for you. The app’s instant-play feature starts streaming songs as soon as you open the app. Listeners can still dig into other options by navigating to the explore tab but for others who are bogged down by the ‘paradox of choice’ — having to choose between too many options — it’s a welcome reprieve to let Resso take control. “Many people came back to us and said that they didn’t need to skip over songs while using the instant-play feature so that means the recommendation is working. There were many motivating key points,” said Nair. However, since the suggestions are based on the app’s own artificial intelligence-based algorithm, the song choices largely depend on the preferences you select while signing up for an account. Considering that Spotify’s niche is its own algorithm, Resso will have to prove its mettle in how well it knows its listeners. Indie artists and exclusive songs One of the biggest pain points of the music streaming industry is that platforms have now started releasing songs which are exclusive. For instance, a JioSaavn user would have to download Gaana in order to listen to Mithi Mithi by Amrit Maan featuring Jasmine Sandals since it’s a Gaana exclusive — even though JioSaavn features other songs by the same artist. And, that’s something that even Resso can’t avoid. “I think that’s the nature of the industry, you can’t help it. All you can do is sign up more independent artists on your platform so that they don’t go anywhere,” said Nair. Independent artists are going to be a big play for the ByteDance-owned music streaming app. They plan on being the most aggressive to sign up new talent in the industry going forward. “Artists can come through a label or come directly to us, we will sign up all of them. We’ve already partnered with quite a few independent labels including Azaadi Records and BigBang. There are a couple of artists who have approached us directly. We will be most aggressive on independent music,” said Nair. Unlike Spotify’s rough start in India, Resso has licensing deals with all international and local majors locked down, including Warner, T-Series, Saregama, TimesMusic and others. Most regional majors are on board as well with the exception of one or two, which Nair said will be finalised in the coming month or two. The app is available for download on the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store. It’s free for use. The version has a limited music streaming to 128 kbps and users won’t be able to download songs. The paid version of the app costs ₹119 per month, much higher than its counterparts. Neither version features ads — for now. TikTok owner ByteDance's new music streaming app Resso just launched in India — and it's betting on 'vibes' to beat Spotify, Gaana and JioSaavn

At least four persons were killed and one went missing in Mumbai and Thane as heavy rain clobbered the country's commercial capital since Monday night with the state government declaring a holiday in the city and the <keyword id="6361772" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-metropolitan-region">Mumbai Metropolitan Region</keyword> areas, officials said here on Tuesday. The day was marked with flooding in several parts of the city, a major landslide on the Western Express Highway, an incident of a double house crash, over 100 trees crashing and several emergency incidents of electric short-circuits. In the double house crash incident in Santacruz, Rekha M. Kakade and her 18-month old infant daughter Jahnavi were washed away and drowned in a swollen drain. Another daughter Shivanya was rescued safely but a third daughter is still missing, said BMC Disaster Control. <keyword id="9701050" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rakib-a-mandal">Rakib A. Mandal</keyword>, 15, was electrocuted and died on the spot when he came in contact with a live wire of street light on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, while a man was washed away in the floods in Navi Mumbai, said the local police. Mumbai city recorded 25.2 cms while the suburbs notched 26.8 cms of rain in the past 24 hours, throwing normal life out of gear in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad (the MMR areas), and catching commuters unaware. The Central Railway's Harbour Line was stopped from the Kurla-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and trains crawled on the main lines, but <keyword id="9402731" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-western-railway">the Western Railway</keyword> suspended services between Bandra-Churchgate, owing to flooding in Dadar and surrounding areas. After rains subsided in the afternoon, all train services resumed normal operations. Road traffic was badly hit in the city and the entire MMR region with the BEST diverting its buses on at least 25 routes all over the city, including Dadar, Kings Circle, Parel, Wadala, Chembur, Kurla, Sion and Bandra owing to waterlogging in these areas. A massive landslide on the Western Express Highway between Kandivali-Malad paralysed south-bound traffic at dawn on Tuesday, but there were no casualties. Soon afterwards, the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> deployed six JCBs to start work of clearing the debris, stones and the highway is likely to be cleared for operations soon. BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal, accompanied by top officials P. Velrasu, Chandrashekhar Chore, Sanjay Rathod and others went around various flooded spots in south Mumbai and supervised the anti-flooding operations undertaken. Homes or shops were flooded in slums or low-lying areas in the suburbs of Malad, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Parel with people struggling to save their valuable belongings from the water. Flooding was reported in Dadar, Prabhadevi, Bhendi Bazaar, Sir J.J. Hospital Junction, Kurla, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Sion, Wadala, Mankhurd, Bandra, Andheri, Kandivali and other parts. The Mithi River was swollen at Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali and Goreagaon and running above the danger level, forcing many on their banks to evacuate their dwellings with the authorities remaining alert for any eventuality. The main subways in Khar, Andheri, Malad and Dahisar were also flooded and all vehicular traffic stopped on both sides. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, the old Mumbai-Pune highway, major or arterial roads in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad were heavily waterlogged or flooded, stranding many vehicles in 3-4 feet deep waters, and causing traffic snarls. The IMD has forecast spells of more heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and surroundings over the next 24 hours, besides a high tide with a swell of 3.98 metres early on Wednesday. Heavy rains in Mumbai — IMD issues red alert, government offices declare holiday

The resilient Mumbaikar is being tested again. The Mumbai-kar who has survived floods, bombs, landslides and bad administration will certainly put up with another round of bad deluge. After all, the administration bodies really know the Mumbaikar takes pride in himself, every time he resurfaces after a raw deal. He is flustered only when the locals run behind by a few minutes, or are being cancelled for the day. Else, all is fine with his world. The bombs can explode and the water can gush. 
 
 Really, the state of infrastructure in India’s financial capital is something that invites a feeling of abhor, for want of a better expression. It was exactly ten years ago when the city turned into a live sea just as the day progressed from morning to noon, and into the evening. By then, city had no place to send its people or water that was pouring from the grey clouds. Ever consistently, and continuously. All communication had broken down, and the city had literally turned into a giant water body. Locals rose to the occasion, welcomed strangers into their homes; kept them warm and fed them hot food. That was in 2005. Just about a decade ago. But the memory is so green in people’s minds that it is tough to forget the neck high dirty water and the taste of tablets one had to consume so as to protect oneself from infections caused by rat bites. This was announced on the radio. Yes, <keyword id="6358070" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> had literally returned to stone-age (well, almost) those days with radio being the only mode of mass communication. Because newspapers didn’t reach many areas and television sets wouldn’t work after power breakdown of hours. Landslides followed. Local trains returned on tracks and ran precisely on the minute schedule. 
	 The city sprang back on its feet. It was business as usual and everybody, including the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (BMC) went right back into sleep. Studies were conducted to understand the water drainage system in the city which failed miserably when faced with 944 mm of rain in just a matter of 24 hours on July 26, 2005. God-fearing locals understood their mother, water-fairy and carer – River Mithi which flows around Mumbai had gotten angry. She had to be calmed down. 
	 
	 

	A decade later, Mithi has roared again to expose the bad planning of authorities who have slept through a decade of infrastructure planning and making the city safe for its people. In the last 24 hours, Mumbai has received more than 283 mm of rain. And this has exposed the delicate situation the city has been in. 
	 What happened to all those surveys, studies and urban planning expertise serve the city which controls most part of the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> of the country? 
	 
	 

	Heavy rains that pummelled Mumbai have cost the lives of two people who have died of electrocution in the last few hours. But, the real number of those suffering from water-borne epidemics and endemics will never come to fore. They will never make it to the government’s statistics, because the new government would like to believe it needed time to prepare for the challenge. Now, who can challenge them with their own claim? Was it the same people who said city was ‘monsoon-ready’? 
	 
	 

	Though the authorities claim the city received unprecedented rainfall, the drainage system that has existed since ages lays exposed. Bad and worse days ahead. 
	 
	 

	As a response to the 2005 flooding, city authorities had formulated The Greater Mumbai Disaster Management Action Plan which was identify the risks the city would face including floods, earthquakes and cyclones, and suggest ways of tackling the water related challenges. Though one of the suggestions was to deepen and broaden Mithi river which drains into Arabian sea, the suggestion wasn’t considered well owing to environmental factors. 
	 
	 

	Mumbai remains vulnerable to flooding owing to dense population, bad drainage and inefficient garbage management system which leaves the waterways clogged with plastics. 
	 
	 

	Just recently, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted rise in sea level and Mumbai being the second city in the world at a risk of receiving high rainfall and being subject to floods too. Though development of improved drainage for the city is underway, the works are not moving at a desired pace. Pity that the governments chose to risk people’s lives and property over speed of expediting the works since 2005 floods. 
	 
	 

	A decade later, Mumbai stands exposed and how! In the last decade or so, Mumbai has spent more than Rs 1000 crore on flood preparedness and meeting the challenges that rise alongside. But, looks like the picture was worth less than the money paid. Because, the city has now returned to the starting point. Now, it’s an uphill task all over again.

Reports have emerged that American swimmer Ryan Lochte was held at gunpoint at a party in Rio

<ul><li>Mumbai, India’s financial capital, will be going to the polls today during the fourth phase of the Indian Parliamentary election.</li><li>Out of Maharashtra’s 48 constituencies, 12 fall under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and 6 are directly in Mumbai.</li><li>The city is infamous for its low voter turnout even though it did witness a 10% increase during the last Indian general election in 2014.</li></ul>India’s financial capital Mumbai is a lucrative constituency and therefore the Bharatiya Janata Party coalition (BJP), which the regional outfit Shiv Sena is part of, is keen to retain its hold on. For a little over a year now, nearly all of the city is covered in a cloud of dust. Aside from the regular pollution, a spate of infrastructure projects like metro rail construction have been initiated by the incumbent coalition led by the BJP. There is a lot of buzz around elections in Mumbai, which accounts for 1% of India’s population <a href="https://www.census2011.co.in/census/city/365-mumbai.html">according </a>to Census 2011. The city’s two landmarks, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain shut as the city goes to the polls during the fourth phase of the Indian <keyword id="3393746" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Election-2019">general election 2019</keyword>. However, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which includes 12 of Maharashtra’s 48 constituencies, is <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/in-the-news/can-mumbai-break-the-low-voter-turnout-jinx-in-2019">infamous</a> for low voter turnout — although, it did witness a 10% increase in 2014 to 52.66% from 41.40% in 2009. It is generally believed that the average Mumbaikar, as the citizens call themselves, would rather drive out of the city for the long weekend than stay back for voting. The city’s searing summer sun makes the idea of standing in queues much less compelling.

 Those well-off, residing in growing clusters of high rises in South Mumbai, or SoBo as it is sometimes called, have little to complain about beyond bureaucracy, bad roads, and incessant traffic. There are barely any power cuts in the city. Most people even in the relatively less privileged middle class enjoy running water. However, for every one of those in Mumbai’s towering glory, there are thousands of people strewn, along the long banks of three sprawling highways heading north, in descending order of privilege — in some cases the loss of privilege is just perceived — based on their distance from SoBo. From the suburban buildings signifying various social ranks, down to the seemingly-endless shadowy slums, issues span from unemployment and insufficient salaries, to unaffordable rents and leaky roofs, to water scarcity and a crumbling state infrastructure that has been, at times, <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india-foot-overbridge-collapses-in-navi-mumbai-latets-updates-injured-killed-authorities-513954">fatal</a>. Yet, most Mumbaikars don’t vote. Ajit Ranade, one of the cofounders of Association of Democratic Reforms, told the Hindu, “Low voter awareness, voters’ apathy, agnosticism — when the candidate on the ballot does not excite or motivate the voter— and lack of registration in the young category and first-time voters are the reasons for low voter turnout.” This time, some voters in South Mumbai may go to the poll booths but rather than vote between Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant or Congress’ Milind Murli Deora, their ballot will read NOTA (none of the above). The citizens in the area <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/lok-sabha-2019/story/why-some-south-mumbai-voters-choosing-nota-1510675-2019-04-26">claim</a> that there hasn’t been any development in their region over the past 24 years. These voters are people who live in the shadows of some of the country’s richest, including the family of Mukesh Ambani. Chaos and colour Of the six constituencies in Mumbai, the most <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/nation/poonam-priya-dutt-battle-it-out-in-vip-constituency/764783.html">coveted</a> seat is the one in Mumbai North Central where 27 candidates are going to be battling for the crown. Running through the middle of this constituency is the western express highway, one of the country’s widest roads that is choked by traffic day in and day out. To the left of the highway is Bandra, home to many a celebrity. To the right of the same highway are areas like Kurla — once labeled the ‘dirtiest ward in the city’ — and Chandivali which are home to large communities living in slums. The political heavyweights in the fight for Mumbai North Central are Priya Dutt, the Congress candidate and, the incumbent, BJP’s Poonam Mahajan — both from political legacies. The former is the daughter of the late actor turned politician, Sunil Dutt, and the latter is BJP politician Pramod Mahajan’s daughter. Both Sunil Dutt and Pramod Mahan were iconic leaders in their own right who have left behind a legacy that has fueled their families’ political ambitions. One of the highlights of this election in Bandra is the recognition of sexual minorities as a politically important segment. Priya Dutt and Congress member, Harrish Iyer — who is also India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-first-openly-gay-politician-joins-the-oldest-party-in-the-country/articleshow/68799862.cms">first openly gay politician</a> — met with members of the LGBT community to discuss bringing their issues into mainstream politics. The country’s biggest financial hub is also home to Bollywood.As film careers fade, some of the actors jump into politics.
