<ul><li>“Today's product designs are inspired by yesterday's modern miracles,” says <keyword id="148038" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tupperware" source="Orion">Tupperware</keyword> as it brings back its vintage ‘Wonderlier Bowl line,’ which is featured in Amazon Prime Video’s recently released <keyword id="6888608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Marvelous-Mrs-Maisel" source="Orion">The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel</keyword>’s Season Four.</li><li>Here’s a brief history of how Tupperware used ‘Patio Parties’ as its marketing model in the late-1950s to early-1960s to become a household name in America.</li></ul>I had my Friday night reserved for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Season 4. Amazon Prime Video has been releasing two episodes each week. It dropped episodes 3 and 4 on February 25, which goes on to show how society considers women as ‘failure’ over a single setback in their career. From shock, denial, and dealing with an emotional breakdown to starting all over again, <keyword id="13275485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="miriam-midge-maisel" source="Orion">Miriam Midge Maisel</keyword>, played by <keyword id="1551776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rachel-brosnahan" source="Orion">Rachel Brosnahan</keyword>, goes through various stages of failure in Season 4. I couldn’t help but notice how her journey in this Season is very similar to Tupperware’s Vice President Brownie Wise from the early 1960s. Wise, the woman who built Tupperware’s empire in America through her ingenious marketing model, was at the peak of her career when she was fired from the organisation. So, when I saw Tupperware’s product placement in Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it made perfect sense. Tupperware’s product placement is so seamlessly built into the narrative that people with only a penchant for marketing or advertising professionals would notice it. The Marvelous Partnership After we saw Midge being dropped as the opening act for singer Shy Baldwin, she starts picking up the pieces in episode 3. She looks for a side-hustle and that’s when we briefly see her stepping into a new offstage role as an independent Tupperware Sales Representative. The plastic-maker Tupperware was quite popular in American kitchens in the late 1950s and has partnered with Amazon Prime Video to bring back its vintage Wonderlier Bowl line, which is featured in the series. Only available for a limited time, the five-piece pastel-hued Wonderlier Bowl set can be bought through <a href="https://www.tupperware.com/pages/maisel">Tupperware’s </a>website. As Midge hosts her first Patio Party aka Tupperware Party, she sells “Plastic, the modern miracle” to her close friends. “Ladies, these are some of the finest plastic products on the household market. There’s so much to choose from; there are so many convenient sizes -- so many vivid colors and you’re going to want it all,” she says, as she introduces the ‘Wonderlier’ and hopes that her friends would get excited about the newest product on the block in the 1950s. Midge cleverly doesn’t mention the brand Tupperware in that presentation and you could faintly hear the brand as her friends chatter in the background. She later adds that she will announce the winner of the ‘Silliest Tupperware Hat’ as we see women in the background, who have fashioned Tupperware bowls and glasses into a hat on their heads. <div type="image" title="Mrs maisel tupperware party" msid="89898779" hostid="261"></div> Transporting back to Tupperware’s golden era: How it cracked the market with a brilliant marketing strategy When Earl Tupper launched its range of plastic containers in the 1940’s, he was faced with the biggest challenge. Its target audience simply did not like plastic. This was during World War II, when <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27442625">plastic was only used</a> for everything from insulation wiring to truck parts but not for home use. American kitchens were filled with glass jars and ceramic and had no place on their shelves for anything plastic. Tupperware’s very first range of containers, ‘Wonderlier Bowl’ line gathered a lot of <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/story-brownie-wise-ingenious-marketer-behind-tupperware-party-180968658/">appreciation </a>from the design and media industry, however, the plastic-maker still struggled to find its place in the consumer kitchens and their hearts. The company was about to go under when Brownie Wise in Miami, their leading seller, came up with a ‘marvelous’ solution. To penetrate the market and get American wives excited about plastic containers, Wise suggested ‘Patio Parties.’ As the picture below by the National Museum of American History shows, parties were Tupperware’s ‘answer’ to a very complex market problem. <div type="image" title="Tupperware - 1950" msid="89898739" hostid="261"></div> Wise recruited women to sell some plastic containers for her. They organised Patio Parties, wherein women would demonstrate novel products and discuss how the latest colour in Tupperware’s Wonderlier Bowl line excited them, over a cup of coffee and local gossip. To up the fun, Wise added a few party games. In the picture below, Wise herself throws a balloon in the air. These party games have also made an appearance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's newest season. <div type="image" title="Tupperware Ms Wise" msid="89898650" hostid="261"></div> Pioneer of the Patio Parties, Wise was appointed as Tupperware’s Vice President in 1951 and was responsible for building the home party business. She built the Tupperware empire and helped the brand become a household name. In the 1950s, Tupperware <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/story-brownie-wise-ingenious-marketer-behind-tupperware-party-180968658/">sales </a>soared and hit $25 million in 1954 on the back of Wonder Bowl, Ice-Tup popsicle molds, which were a hit in Patio Parties. Tupperware knew the importance of Community Marketing even before it was a thing. Wise built a network of 20,000 women and none of them were Tupperware’s employees. <div type="image" title="Mrs maisel tupperware 1" msid="89898525" hostid="261"></div> Tupperware parties became one of the fastest-growing marketing programs in the US and women of all ages and colours would host and join these very popular parties. It also empowered women to become independent in the 1950s from the safety of their homes, many of whom came onboard as full-time party organisers later. Unfortunately, the Founder of the Company Tupper fought frequently with Wise over company strategy and management. As she got all media attention and Tupper saw her as a threat, Wise was fired in 1958. Wise took the matters to court and got $30,000 as her compensation, which was her annual salary back then. She joined a cosmetic company later and continued organising Patio Parties for them. Wise was fired from Tupperware at the peak of her career but that didn’t stop her, just like Mrs. Maisel. It is difficult for women to start over after a setback when society just eagerly waits for us to fall and stop. It must have been harder for Wise to be sacked in the late 1950s when women were just expected to be mothers or wives. Just like Midge was told to focus on her family and keep tending to her children when she started pursuing comedy or faced minor setbacks, Wise’s journey would not have been very different than hers. Back then, having a professional dream, pursuing it despite a lot of resistance from society with almost no backing from your family and no resources to fall back on, was quite rebellious. In real life, change-makers like Wise and in the fictional world, characters like Miriam Maisel push women to keep trying harder. In season 4 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Miriam normalises having an emotional breakdown, makes the audience laugh through it as she turns tragedy into comedy and reminds women that it is okay to fall, stop for a while and then get back onto your path, just marvelously!

When Hinkle ("Once and Again," "Two and a Half Men") met the Riverside Drive dame on season one of the Emmy-winning series, the character's universe revolved around being proper, pretty, and perfect. Or, at the very least, being perceived as such. But on season four, which premiered on Prime Video in February, it's clear Rose has come a long way since then.She's made peace with her daughter Miriam "Midge" Maisel's divorce, taken a solo jaunt to Paris, relocated to Queens and back, and launched a matchmaking business so successful that her tri-state competitors have threatened war.So when series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told Hinkle that this Rose was going to perform stand-up on the seventh episode of season four, the actress was still surprised, but slightly less than she would've been five years ago."When I got the news that I was doing it, I think for two nights — I only had the script a couple nights before — I'm not sure I slept because I was way too nervous," the actress, 55, told Insider during a recent phone interview.Below, Hinkle discusses her penultimate season as Rose, reflecting on her full-circle matchmaking career, the stand-up routine that took more than two days to capture, and the anticipatory heartbreak she's nursing ahead of the show's fifth and final season.<div type="image" title="marin hinkle rose weissman the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2453" width="3900" msid="90211727" hostid="261"></div>We kick off season four in 1960, a brand new decade. What excited you about entering this new era as Rose?All of us never were aware until we actually were given the scripts, whether or not we were going to jump time quite a bit.But seeing that it was supposedly half a night later from when we said goodbye to Miriam [on season three], it wasn't a huge mindset change. It's funny because we're like: "1960! We're a new person now!" One thing I did think that they let Rose get influenced in is her clothing. Her clothing shifted a little bit and I love that she's so on top of that. That's a mirror of who she's becoming within her work life.I have a mom who became a lawyer later in her life. She was always wearing dresses. This was in the '70s, so it was a bit later. She let herself, once she became a lawyer, start wearing pants and it changed her whole sense of self and strength. I tried to incorporate that into Rose.Once you saw her in pants, she was like, "I'm taking charge in a new way, and I've got a job. I'm going to make the money, and I'm more of a breadwinner than I've ever been. I'm not taking money from my family anymore, and my husband's not working. Or, if he's working, he's making about two cents at the Village Voice!" Her matchmaking business is so much fun to watch. It's one of my favorite parts of this season.Isn't it funny that it's not a profession that's died? If anything, it's only grown and grown in the years that we've used the internet to be able to do matchmaking. <div type="image" title="marin hinkle rose weissman the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2782" width="3900" msid="90211731" hostid="261"></div>You told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epHixrz97TM">Entertainment Weekly</a> that you used to do some matchmaking yourself. Can you tell me about that? Did Amy Sherman-Palladino know that before writing the script?Amy and Dan [Palladino] didn't know that about my life. I've always been a person who loves incorporating different parts of my life with one another. I get such joy out of seeing one faction, whether it's college or elementary school, merge with my graduate school and merge with my professional life and my family. I had a number of people, particularly when I was in my 20s, who were like, "Isn't there someone?" There's a really extraordinary Broadway director I was working with at the time. He was bemoaning when I was auditioning for him. He was like, "Can't you set me up with a nice Jewish doctor?" I looked at him and was like, "I know one," and he was like, "Well, what are you waiting for?" I actually don't remember if I got the job, but that doesn't matter because I got out of the audition and called my great friend who was a nice, extraordinary Jewish doctor. Kind of like Benjamin was in our show!I matched him up with this really prominent theater director. They called one another pretty quickly and have been together ever since.Wow! What a track record.It's Michael Mayer, the Broadway director who's directing "Funny Girl." He was the one who brought it up, and then his now-husband is someone I knew from Brown. I've done that for a couple friends. <div type="image" title="midge maisel and rose weissman the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2605" width="3900" msid="90211733" hostid="261"></div>At one point this season, Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) tries to do some matchmaking for Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein), just like Rose. Do you think Midge and Rose are more alike than they seem? Ever since that first year, when they showed that she mirrors me when it comes to how she gets ready every night for the next day, I was like, "Look at that! Like mother, like daughter." That was a stylistic choice, but when you think of how they both care about the artistry of the visual and how they enter a space in the most beautiful clothing and the most beautiful hats, it's not an accident. They also have a wit and an edge about them. I do think that she has so much of her father too, this intelligence and her father's goodness of spirit. But her mom has this way of running the show that Midge has too.Season four is at a time when they keep finding themselves in a rotation. Without even noticing it, the two of them are walking the same path.<div type="image" title="the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2182" width="3000" msid="90211734" hostid="261"></div>It's been a journey watching all the characters grow throughout the seasons. I'm wondering, is there any improvisation between the actors on set? I'm not sure Rose has ever been able to say one word that isn't what Amy and Dan had exquisitely come up with. They have not just one, but two script supervisors on set; One who's matching what we do with our physical lives, and the other who's matching the exactitude — like, if the word is "there's," I can't say "there is." There's this panic when you're on set, like, "Oh my god, I have to make sure I do this completely right." There's also a sense of musicality, like a music note that's exactly what you have to play.I have never been able to improv on the show, because what they do is too perfect.You're also dealing with a different time period. There are a lot of nuances that have to be accurate.What's so great about Amy's stuff is the crispness, even in the way we move. When she has us walk down the street, they sometimes put music behind us. It gives you a sense as if you're in a musical, even though they'll pull the music later.Do you have a go-to song to put on when you walk?No, Dan is so versed and skilled in music, as is Amy. They come from a background of deep appreciation for musicals. I have nothing that touches the level of their expertise on that stuff.In fact, often they put something on, and afterward, I'm like, "Who sings that?" They'll be like, "Barbra Streisand" or "Sutton Foster," who they love. It's like, "Oh my god, I've got to go buy that."<div type="image" title="marin hinkle rose weissman the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2600" width="3900" msid="90211735" hostid="261"></div>"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is coming to an end after five seasons. How did you react when you heard the news?I've been a very lucky performer in that I've been on a number of shows that have lasted a bit.This one is heart-wrenching for me because the family is truly like a second family. Maybe that's partially because of COVID. It was a time when people's appreciation for connection was so large. We did a lot of Zooming with one another. I have that ache that happens if you contemplate death. That's a little dramatic.No, I understand!I'm going to have to hold onto Amy and Dan's hands and be like, "You have to promise, even if it's a lie, that we'll do something in five years!"I don't know how I'm going to walk away from these people. I'm just going to imagine that it isn't the end, even though they told us it is. <div type="image" title="coney island the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2751" width="3900" msid="90211738" hostid="261"></div>We'll have to cross our fingers for a reunion. Yeah, I think that's it. I do.There's an episode coming up where Rose has this crazy magical moment where real-life magic happens. My character ends up getting hypnotized and doing a stand-up act like my daughter. They brought us to a theater — and I've done a lot of theater, but I've never done anything that connects to what Rachel or Alex do in real life. I had to memorize something that was a version of what Midge would have done in one of her stand-up acts. I have to channel a little bit. They didn't want me to sound like her or be exactly like her, because it's obviously Rose in a hypnotic state. In the moment I asked the great Rachel Brosnahan, "Can you come on set?" She was there in the audience, but I was like, "Can you come up to the stage and hold my hand?" It was almost like she was a dance choreographer in that moment. It was very moving for me to try and connect to her. We were at the Cherry Lane Theatre, and I had to get on the stage in front of people they wonderfully hired and paid to laugh at me, even though I wasn't always necessarily funny. Hopefully, I was funny enough to make them laugh.<div type="image" title="the marvelous mrs maisel season 4" height="2600" width="3900" msid="90211740" hostid="261"></div>I'm sure it was great. So you wanted to mirror small parts of Midge's act without mimicking her?That's what the storyline was. When I got the news that I was doing it, I think for two nights — I only had the script a couple nights before — I'm not sure I slept because I was way too nervous.When people perform and then forget about an audience, it's a beautiful way to be on stage. But if you're looking out at an audience, the fear factor is so great.How long did it take you to capture that scene?Maybe I should be embarrassed by this, but they gave me a lot of time because they knew it was going to take a lot of time.That's so great.It took two and a half days, which is a long time to shoot one little scene. It was so much fun, and I was sweating profusely. I went up to Rachel afterward, who I love like a daughter, and I said: "Oh my god, I've been in awe of you since the day we started shooting, but my awe levels just surpassed anything I ever thought because that is the scariest thing, to do standup in front of people."<div type="image" title="rose weissman the marvelous mrs maisel" height="2599" width="3900" msid="90211741" hostid="261"></div>Absolutely, and she does such a fantastic job. I'm just excited to see Abe Weissman's face.Abe's face! I make fun of things the way Midge would, and Abe's face is so priceless.When I come out of my state of hypnosis, I have no memory of any of it. Not Marin, Marin remembers! Rose never has a reality check where she knows what she did.Poor Rose! Everybody else knows.If there had been iPhones, I'm sure it would be the most humiliating thing. Is there anything you'd like to add?Each year there's different kinds of movement emotionally. There were these times that Rose was making big strides in who she was as more of a feminist. Then she went through days where she was seemingly going backward. Sometimes it's interesting where people are championing her. Like, "Come on, go forth in a way that's like your daughter."It's also amazing that Amy knows that people have grown up in a way — my mother and father are like this, too — where you could push them into the new generation, but there are parts of them that are like, "For a long time, I've been this other way, so let me take a beat."Sometimes I almost want to have a contemporary approach to her where I'm like, "Come on, Rose! Pretend that you can be more liberated and you can accept your daughter." Then you realize that people, if they've been a certain way for this many years, they might be a little stuck.This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the series finale of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."</li><li>Luke Kirby, who portrays a fictionalized version of comedian Lenny Bruce, spoke to Insider.</li></ul>The series finale of "<a href="https://www.insider.com/marvelous-mrs-maisel-gilmore-girls-cameos-milo-ventimiglia-kelly-bishop-2023-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,</a>" released on Friday, saw <a href="https://www.insider.com/marvelous-mrs-maisel-costumes-rachel-brosnahan-2020-1">Miriam "Midge" Maisel</a> (Rachel Brosnahan) finally get the big break she and manager Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) have been working tirelessly toward <a href="https://www.insider.com/marvelous-mrs-maisel-facts-2018-9">since the show began</a>.Rather fittingly for Midge, who tore up the rule book long ago, it comes when she hijacks her interview on "The Gordon Ford Show," which is hinged on the novelty that she is its "resident lady writer," and wows the live studio audience with a truly spectacular four-minute set.In sharp contrast to Midge's impending success (flashforwards littered throughout the season show she becomes a comedian adored the world over), the finale returns to Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby), and dramatizes one of his pained last performances in a run-down club in San Francisco. It's the first time Lenny — who is a fictionalized version of the real-life profane, pioneering comedian — has been seen since the <a href="https://www.insider.com/marvelous-mrs-maisel-cast-explain-stephanie-hsu-season-5-exit-2023-4">season five premiere</a> in which he and Midge exchanged what looked like a pretty final farewell in a TWA terminal.In that scene, Lenny, exhausted and carrying a stack of paperwork relating to his latest legal troubles, told Midge he was headed out to the West Coast to spend time with his daughter.<div type="image" title="Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce in series finale of &quot;The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.&quot;" height="2013" width="2684" msid="100535994" hostid="261"></div>As audiences learn in the finale, that indeed was their final encounter.While Midge did show up to Lenny's San Fran show — set four years into the future — she decides not to go backstage and speak to him, seemingly too disturbed by his descent into drug and alcohol abuse.<div type="image" title="Rachel Brosnahan (Miriam 'Midge' Maisel) and Luke Kirby (Lenny Bruce) on &quot;The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.&quot;" height="2000" width="2666" msid="100535995" hostid="261"></div>While some fans have expressed their <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMarvelousMrsMaisel/comments/13ljvzu/lenny_in_s5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">disappointment</a> over Kirby's lack of screen time in season five, the actor told Insider that he supports showrunners and executive producers Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino's decision to scale back on scenes involving Lenny."lt just harkens back to this responsibility that I think Amy and Dan had with inviting a real person into this fiction," Kirby said."They had to be very careful and walk that fine line about when they were using him advantageously versus when they would have then been using him greedily," he continued, before shrugging: "Or maybe they just don't like me."Jokes aside, Kirby said he "felt good" about how the show wrapped up Lenny's storyline, teasing just enough of the tragedy that would befall him just 12 months later.<div type="image" title="Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce in season 4 of &quot;The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.&quot;" height="1800" width="2400" msid="100535996" hostid="261"></div>The standup routine that audiences see Lenny perform in that opening scene is hard to watch.Instead of a charming, witty, razor-tongued satirist, this Lenny is unfocused. He tries to find jokes in the convoluted court documents that he's brought on stage with him and ultimately fails as he struggles to remember the details. When he realizes he's not connecting with the audience, he desperately turns to physical humor.While it's not taken verbatim from the comedian's real performance (a recording of which exists <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wuNKs1_gC8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">online </a>and there's no evidence that the real Lenny ever performed a Bob Dylan-inspired folk dance), Kirby said he found looking into the vast archive of Lenny's performances was invaluable when it came to his portrayal."That helps to fire the synapses in the imagination," he said. "In getting to listen to the real Lenny and to watch the real Lenny — all those things have just been lucky, lucky charms." On the flip side, he said he said that the "hardest thing was reminding myself that it wasn't a biopic."Kirby recalled how early on in the show's run, he became "concerned about the chronology" of Lenny's life before he grew comfortable with taking a looser approach to the New York native's life story.<div type="image" title="The real Lenny Bruce was known to read out court transcripts from his cases during his routine." height="360" width="480" msid="100535997" hostid="261"></div>"At some point, I realized that was not what we were doing and I think that that benefited us, and benefited me certainly, to not have to feel like I was adhering to true logistics, but instead to try and find the essence of a person," he said."And I just tried to absorb as much of it as I could and see how see how it executed out of me."As for Lenny's demise — he was found dead at age 40 in the bathroom of his Hollywood home surrounded by narcotics paraphernalia — Kirby said that this was a key part of his performance that he "carried from the outset of the show.""He always felt to me like somebody who had a very distinct shadow on his door," the actor said. Its comedy "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" about a 50s housewife turned stand-up comic, which debuted its first season in November 2017, was one of big winners at the 2018 Golden Globes with two major wins. But "Maisel" wasn't Amazon's first hit comedy. Amazon developed its prowess in comedies that blur the line with heavy drama with the Emmy and Golden Globe winner "Transparent," Golden Globe winner "Mozart in the Jungle," and the very dark British comedy "Fleabag."But not all of Amazon's comedies have performed well.
