<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>'s "<keyword id="11947905" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cinderella" source="Orion">Cinderella</keyword>" has been praised as a feminist adaptation of the classic story. </li><li>However, in order to move the title character's story forward, Princess Gwen is neglected.</li><li>Princess Gwen had the potential to be one of the <keyword id="11897475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie" source="Orion">movie</keyword>'s strong female leads.</li></ul><p><em>Warning: Spoilers ahead for Amazon's "Cinderella."</em></p><p><a href="https://insider.com/category/cinderella">Amazon's "Cinderella"</a> premiered on September 3 to mixed reviews. Those who praised the movie have called it a feminist retelling of the fairy-tale.</p><p>But not all women in the movie benefit from this adaptation.</p><p>Unlike other versions of the story, this Cinderella (<keyword id="11947906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="camila-cabello" source="Orion">Camila Cabello</keyword>) is a career woman who doesn't dream of marrying Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine), but instead wants to become a fashion designer and make her own way in the world. </p><p>Writer and director Kay Cannon molds Cinderella - or Ella, as she's known in this version - into a three-dimensional character with her own motivations. However, she neglects the film's other female characters - most notably, Princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive).</p><p>As Prince Robert's sister and second in line to the throne, Gwen makes her ambition to be queen clear, but her progressive ideas are ignored by her father, the King (Pierce Brosnan).</p><p>Ultimately, the crown is passed to Gwen only by default - when her older brother decides he doesn't want it.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Princess Gwen in &quot;Cinderella.&quot;" height="480" width="720" msid="86465786" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2>Ella gets to be a career woman, while Gwen is used as a plot device </h2><p>Ella and Prince Robert's decision to pursue their own dreams away from royal life is an undoubtedly refreshing take.</p><p><a href="https://www.dailycal.org/2021/09/03/amazon-studios-cinderella-is-feminist-manifesto-made-fairytale-feature/">The Daily Californian's Ryan Garay</a> praised Cannon for reimagining "what we teach our children about women and their position in the stories we tell" and for shifting expectations of "what a princess film can be."</p><p><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-01/review-a-strenuously-woke-cinderella-for-the-metoo-era">The Associated Press' Jocelyn Noveck</a> wrote that the film teaches younger generations that "your destiny belongs in your own hands," while <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/sep/01/cinderella-review-musical-camila-cabello-james-corden">The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw</a> wrote that Cinderella "wears the trousers" in this adaptation.</p><p>But it seems unfair that Gwen's fate - to be queen - is used as a plot device to make this happen. It seems that the only reason Gwen was written into this movie was to eradicate the obstacle that stopped her brother from being with Ella, who didn't want to marry into royalty.</p><p>The movie could have benefited from a scene where the King finally decides to hear Gwen's ideas, thus granting her the crown based on her merits.</p><p>Unfortunately, having a princess come second place to her brother simply because of her gender is something <a href="https://www.insider.com/monarchy-treatment-women-queen-meghan-markle-reveals-blatant-sexism-2020-10">real-life princesses have endured</a> for centuries.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-martha-louise-sexism-norwegian-monarchy-queen-2020-12">Norway's Princess Märtha Louise</a> is the eldest child of King Harald and Queen Sonja, but because females were prohibited from inheriting the throne when she was born, her brother and his children overtook her in the line of succession. The rules were changed to allow females to inherit the throne in 1990. </p><p>To this day, some monarchies - including Japan, Morocco, and Oman - only allow males to inherit the throne, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-global-royals-women-factbox-idUSKCN1S61RC">according to Reuters.</a></p><p>With Gwen, "Cinderella" fell short where it could have shifted the narrative to show that princesses can become queens in their own right.</p><div type="image" title="Shots from Cinderella" height="2599" width="3466" msid="86465788" hostid="261"></div><h2>And Gwen isn't alone </h2><p>Other female characters, including Ella's stepsisters and Queen Beatrice (Minnie Driver), were also given a backseat in the film. While the characterization of the stepsisters hasn't evolved much from previous adaptations, Queen Beatrice is a new character who is constantly overshadowed by her husband, the King.</p><p>Ella's stepmother Vivian (Idina Menzel) fares slightly better than Gwen, Queen Beatrice, and the stepsisters. She at least gets to have some depth and isn't portrayed as a villain like in previous adaptations, but instead as a concerned parent with a backstory which explains why she was so reluctant to allow Ella to follow her dreams.</p><p>Unfortunately, Cannon doesn't follow through with her development of the stepmother in any meaningful way. By the film's final scenes, the audience isn't given any indication of where her character will end up or how her relationship with Ella will develop after the movie ends.</p><p>Ultimately, it's difficult to consider the movie as a true feminist retelling when it seems Ella is the only woman who gets to live happily ever after.</p><p><em>This is an opinion column. But Damon says not all the men in Hollywood are despicable.</p><p>"We're in this watershed moment and it's great but I think one thing that's not being talked about is there are a whole s---load of guys - the preponderance of men I've worked with - who don't do this kind of thing and whose lives aren't going to be affected," Damon told Business Insider while promoting his new movie, "Downsizing" (opening in theaters Friday). "If I have to sign a sexual harassment thing, I don't care, I'll sign it. I would have signed it before. I don't do that and most of the people I know don't do that."</p><p>Damon has recently been under fire for comments he made regarding sexual misconduct in Hollywood. Late last week in an interview for <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/matt-damon-opens-harvey-weinstein-sexual-harassment-confidentiality/story?id=51792548" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC News' "Popcorn with Peter Travers,"</a> Damon told the Rolling Stone critic that there's a "spectrum of behavior" to consider.</p><p>"There's a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right?" Damon said. "Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn't be conflated, right?"</p><p>Damon then went on to make his point using Minnesota Senator Al Franken, who recently stepped down due to numerous harassment allegations. Damon said that Franken's alleged acts weren't in the "same category" as Harvey Weinstein.&#xa0;</p><p>Damon's comments <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/matt-damon-sexual-assault-comments-actresses-criticize-2017-12">drew criticism</a>, including from his "Good Will Hunting" costar and ex-girlfriend Minnie Driver, and Alyssa Milano, who helped make the #MeToo social media movement popular.</p><p>Business Insider also asked Damon if the current climate in Hollywood had made him more conscious of the people he works with on future projects. Would he back out of a movie if an actor, director, or producer had sexual misconduct allegations against them?</p><p>"That always went into my thinking," Damon said. "I mean, I wouldn't want to work with somebody who - life's too short for that. But the question of if somebody had allegations against them, you know, it would be a case-by-case basis. Matt Damon says we aren't talking enough about all the men in Hollywood who aren't sexual predators

Originally, the character of Will Hunting, who Damon ended up playing, was a physics prodigy.</p><p>However, Sheldon Glashow, a Nobel Prize winning physicist who teaches at Harvard, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/trivia?item=tr0776622">told Damon</a> that he should be brilliant at math instead of physics.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55391a90ecad048c7a2d5fe7-1200-600/matt-damon-good-will-hunting-4.png" border="0" alt="Matt Damon Good Will Hunting" style="line-height: 1.5em;"><p class="source"><span>Miramax via Netflix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That may not sound like a big difference, but according to Columbia University physics and mathematics professor Brian Greene, who spoke at the panel about how "Good Will Hunting" portrays math and science, it makes a lot more sense.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He went on to explain why physics wouldn't have worked as well in the context of the film.</span></p><p>"Having some deep insight about the universe, though, typically, it's a group project in the modern era," Greene said. "Doing some mathematical theorem is a singular undertaking very often."</p><p>This works well for both the film and the character of Will. After all, Will's genius makes him something of a loner, and the more people want to work with him and help him, the more he pushes away. One of Matt Damon's Harvard professors gave him a small note that completely changed 'Good Will Hunting'

According to Skarsgard and director Gus Van Sant, Williams would typically do all of his lines while impersonating different celebrities.</span><p>"Every time, the first take, I came in and it wasn't him ... Jack Nicholson was standing there. He'd behave like Jack Nicholson," Skarsgard said.&#xa0;</p><p>"Then we had to do it again and he was James Cagney. I think it was five or six takes with a different person every time," he continued. Much of the improvisation took place in Sean's (Williams) office. According to Van Sant, Williams did an entire scene as Janet Reno, while Matt Damon played along with him as Daffy Duck. Another time, Williams did all of his lines as Frankenstein.</span><p>At one point, Van Sant asked Damon, "Isn't this fun?" To which Damon responded, "No! It's exhausting!"</p><p>Williams' performance in "Good Will Hunting" earned him his first and only Oscar. His acting method sounds atypical, especially when compared to how other Oscar winners typically prepare. So yeah, she's </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">kind of</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> a big deal. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Caglia's </span><a href="https://angelacaglia.com/pages/skin-spa"><span style="font-weight: 400;">La Vie en Rose Power Facial</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> includes a mix of natural elements like using rose quartz crystal massagers and products infused with meadowfoam seed oil, and more in-depth treatments like the aforementioned LED light mask. My session with her was the first time my skin had been exposed to LED light, and also the first time a facial left me <em>literally</em> glowing. No redness, no inflammation, no downtime. Coincidence? I think not.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></p><h3><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>The technology behind LED</strong></span></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"LED lights" - that stands for Light Emitting Diode, by the way - "give off red wavelengths to deliver effective doses of light to your skin," explains Dr. Josh Axe, founder of </span><a href="http://www.instagram.com/ancientnutrition">Ancient Nutrition</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><a href="https://draxe.com/about-dr-josh-axe/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">DrAxe.com</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and author of the best-selling book </span><a href="https://amzn.to/2EcJCHz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Keto Diet: Your 30-Day Plan to Lose Weight, Balance Hormones, Boost Brain Health, and Reverse Disease."</a></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Light in this range is believed to trigger an increase in cell metabolism, protein synthesis (including collagen), antioxidant activity, and other positive effects," he says. In short, LED light has been shown to help make skin look younger and clearer.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's easy to meet claims of that caliber with an eye roll, but LED actually has some serious science behind it. In fact, it was </span><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-24/lllt-therapy-masks-like-opera-celluma-use-leds-for-beauty-facial"><span style="font-weight: 400;">first developed by NASA</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">The organization found that LED light accelerates the skin's healing response, making it ideal for wounded astronauts to use in space. When the beauty industry caught onto the power of LED, it co-opted the technology for use in facials and personal use tools - the latter has become an integral part of my everyday skin-care routine.</span></p><h3><strong>Why I chose the LightStim device</strong></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After my skin-changing facial with Caglia, I wanted an at-home LED device of my own and opted for <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=EHFxW6yx8Uo&amp;mid=2417&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fproduct%2Flightstim-for-wrinkles-P429669" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the LightStim for Wrinkles (currently $249 on Sephora)</a>. I press the LED portion against an area of my skin and hold there for three minutes. Unexpected bonus: The lights are warm, so it feels</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> relaxing and soothing - like a cup of tea to the face. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When three minutes have passed, the device beeps, reminding me to move to a new area until I've treated my whole face. In other words, I can completely zone out without worrying about whether I've lost track of time or focused on one area for too long.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Afterwards, I clean the head of the device to eliminate any lingering bacteria and store it in its handy travel pouch until the next night when I repeat the process all over again. The heat helps calm inflammation and boost circulation, so my skin takes on a nice little glow. But consistency is everything with LED light, and the long-term effects take some time to register. And even though $249 seems like a lot to spend on a skin-care product, this is one that never runs out or needs to be refilled. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Caglia notes there are no risks to using LED light on the skin; on the contrary, it's soothing and helps calm inflammation and irritation. </span><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5843358/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">One scientific study</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> concluded LED "displays an excellent safety profile," while </span><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3926176/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">another clinical trial</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> based on a 30-session course of LED treatment noted, "No severe adverse events were registered during the study or follow-up phase."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As always, there's no guarantee that you'll see the same results from LED light therapy that I have, and you should talk with your dermatologist before incorporating LED light therapy into your routine.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> But if Sting </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> NASA approve?
