India currently faces a shortage of 2.41 million skilled workers in the telecom sector in the 5G era, which is forecast to jump by 3.8 times by 2030, a report showed on Friday. The country will require 22 million skilled workers in 5G-focused industries by 2025, in areas such as cloud computing, robots and the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the key challenges is that only 40 per cent of India's graduates in computer science, IT, and math are employable in the technology sector due to the mismatch between academic requirements and industry demands, according to the report by the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC), launched in association with enterprise decision-making platform Draup at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 here. The number of employed talent in the Indian telecom industry is currently 11.59 million, with 2.95 million corporate talent and 8.24 million blue-collar talent. According to the report, India is the only country expected to have a skilled labour surplus, with 1.3 million workers in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) sector by 2030. "In anticipation of the upcoming 6G era, our focus remains on aligning our skilling initiatives with cutting-edge technologies, ensuring a workforce ready for the future of telecom," said Atul Tiwari, Secretary, <keyword id="2485309" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-skill-development" source="Orion">Ministry of Skill Development</keyword> and Entrepreneurship. The report, titled '<keyword id="19288877" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telecom-talent" source="Orion">Telecom Talent</keyword> in 5G Era: Demand Supply Skill Gap Report 2023-24', highlighted that across 15 top streams, network operation and maintenance and project engineering have the most corporate talent, while network operation and maintenance and sales and distribution - service segment have the most blue-collar talent. According to Arvind Bali, CEO, TSSC, the telecom sector is the third-largest industry in India that accounts for roughly 6.5 per cent of all FDI inflow and also by 2027, the country is anticipated to account for 11 per cent of all 5G subscriptions worldwide. "India has a good chance to close the growing demand-supply gap by 2030 with the proper reskilling and hiring strategies that target adjacent talent in tier 2 and 3 cities and university supply," said Bali. With the help of AI, even more powerful 6G network technologies will emerge in the future, the report mentioned.

India shows eagerness to upskill as it aims at a $4 trillion economy

The courses will be created under two categories -- Beginners and Advanced courses of 12 hours duration each -- and the learners would be enabled with access to Advanced course after receiving the certificate of completion in the Beginners course. "Our aim is to develop citizen-friendly and business-friendly policies. Microsoft joins hands with MSDE, CBC to train 2.5 mn civil servants in India

The Indian Institute of Technology, <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a course on drone technology that would be taught at IITs, other technical institutes and skill development centres in the country. The course has been designed on the directives of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. The ministry sees drone technology from the perspective of the future and believes the move would help in quality supply of specialists in this field. "This is why the ministry has undertaken this task of taking drone technology to students at the macro-level," said a faculty member. The task of designing the course was bestowed on two scientists of aero-space engineering -- <keyword id="13980376" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-abhishek" source="Orion">Dr Abhishek</keyword> and Mangal Kothari. The duo has developed a two-year degree course in which theory and practical would be of equal importance. The course also includes new technologies in making drones. Dr Abhishek said the course had been designed keeping in mind the developing needs and the students. The course would shortly be introduced in the academic institutions. The <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> has been a pioneer in the drone development programme. The scientists have come up with the smallest of drones equipped with cutting edge technologies apart from doing extensive research. It has been developed for the armed forces for surveillance purposes. Drone named 'Gauraiya' appears like a sparrow and weighs 239 grams. It has proved its worth in hills and mountains. Hawk is a powerhouse of 300 grams, can fly for 25 minutes and sends live footage in an area of 2 km. The Auto-Pilot is armed with artificial intelligence and this drone sends all the data to the control room even if it has crashed. The Agri-drone monitors the crop, sprinkles pesticides and makes useful suggestions. IIT Kanpur develops drone technology course for IITs, tech institutes & skill development centres

New Delhi, Mar 4 () The skills development ministry will ensure enhanced participation of women in the next phase of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey said on Wednesday.The Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said his department is organising programmes on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8. "We will give priority to women in the next PMKVY," he told reporters here.He added that the new schemes and programmes to be framed by the ministry will also focus on increasing participation of women.The government is planning to launch third phase of its flagship PMKVY in the next financial year.The scheme, launched in 2015, was revamped in 2016 to impart skills to one crore people by 2020.The minister also appealed to the people to take preventive steps to contain spread of coronavirus. Even today, when you put up a job on Naukri platform, there are over 1,000 applications. But it's still hard to find even five people that the employer is actually looking for,” Oberoi said. K P Krishnan, former secretary of the <keyword id="2485309" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Skill-Development">Ministry of Skill Development</keyword> and Entrepreneurship also agrees with the demand-supply gap in the job market. “India’s unemployment challenge is partly because of a low level of education, high dropout rates, labour market asymmetries, a mismatch between the supply of skills and demand and the high aspirations of young people,” he said. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) pegged the unemployment rate at <a href="https://unemploymentinindia.cmie.com/">7.1% in January</a> 2020. This joblessness is hitting the youth the most. Only 37% of people in the 20-24 age group are employed. This is despite the fact that India has 35% of its working population in the 5 to 30 year age bracket. “This should get much more attention from policymakers. New Delhi, Feb 18 () Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey on Tuesday held a meeting with states representatives to review skill development activities and sought their suggestions on streamlining the upcoming initiatives, a release said. In a move aimed at increasing the role of states in skill development, it was decided that district skill committees will work closely with the Centre to drive demand-driven training initiatives, it stated. Short-term training courses would be introduced in industrial training institutes (ITIs) in consultation with state skill development missions, the release added. The Union ministry also proposed entrepreneurship development unit in each state which will be anchored with state skilling mission. It also proposed developing mentorship and handholding of existing and new entrepreneurs, through district entrepreneurship incubation lab in existing skilling institutions. The discussions were also held on developing an action plan for better implementation of skilling initiatives under 'Skill India Mission' and for creating employment opportunities for the youth. During the day-long workshop, Vision 2025 was also discussed which lays the ready-to-implement road-map for promoting skill development and entrepreneurship in the country. "Our endeavour is to move away from the low skill equilibrium and contribute towards economic growth and wealth creation through skill development and entrepreneurship. This will eventually lead to increased employment prospects for the youth of the nation," the Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said. RSN MRMR

Centre reviews skill development activities with states

Ten major trade unions of the country, including the AITUC, INTUC, CITU, HMS, LPF, SEWA and AIUTUC among others, on Monday, boycotted their pre-budget consultations with Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, citing lack of proper time given to them to put forth their demands before the Centre. In a letter to <keyword id="679937" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sitharaman" source="Orion">Sitharaman</keyword> on November 25, the unions had threatened to boycott the meeting after the <keyword id="47209" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="Orion">Finance Ministry</keyword> allotted them the minutes each to put across their views before the Minister. They had termed the time slot of three minutes allotted for each union to forth their budget demands as a "cheap joke". The unions had also sought a physical meeting with the finance minister in order to discuss their various demands in detail. The <keyword id="48413" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry" source="Orion">Ministry</keyword> had arranged for a meeting via video conferencing. An INTUC leader said that the 10 unions boycotted today's meeting and that the Finance Ministry had called them to assure them that they would be informed about a fresh time slot for a meeting with Sitharaman at a later date. The 10 unions have also sought an increased budget allocation for MGNREGA and giving workers under the scheme's ambit the status of government employees and paying them minimum wages. They have also asked the Minister to increase taxes on corporates and introduce a wealth tax. Arjun has uplifted his family from poverty and bought them a pukka house in the village. The initiative also promotes entrepreneurship and development of micro-enterprises by providing loans. ICICI RSETIs offer 38 programmes and over 61,000 individuals have been trained at RSETIs. RSETIs offer 2-4 weeks courses for underprivileged rural people in the age group of 18-45 years. ICICI also makes sure that the needs of local employers are mapped to design relevant courses under the rural initiative that are customised to suit the local requirements with a focus on practical execution of skills. All the trainees are additionally oriented on life skills, financial literacy and workplace organisation (Five S) to ensure a holistic learning experience. The ICICI Foundation has tied up with a large number of industry partners to provide employment opportunities to their trainees. The trainees have been placed in over 1000 companies including Eureka Forbes, Daikin, Bluestar among others.
