The mere mention of the word “Tsunami” is enough to remind us of the devastation that happened in the year 2004. Most of us, even till date, remember the horrific images that we saw on the tele-screens. As per the data from the <keyword id="69522" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="ministry-of-home-affairs">Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword>, 11,000 people lost their lives in this catastrophe and over 5,000 were reported as <keyword id="6357415" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="missing">missing</keyword> or feared dead. More astoundingly, 380,000 Indians were displaced as a result of this disaster and the <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> had estimated that the reconstruction cost will be more than 1.2 billion dollars. 
 It has almost been 10 years since the incident took place but most of us still do not know the science behind tsunami. Another important question that we need to ask is about the efforts that the <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword> and the governments are taking to make sure that we are well-protected against this force of the nature.

The Science Behind Tsunami

The <keyword id="1281307" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ministry-for-Home-Affairs">Ministry for Home Affairs</keyword> has denied security clearance to 33 TV channels of the Sun Group, owing to 'economic security' reasons. It may reconsider its verdict only in case of an ownership change, or if the current board of Directors is dissolved. 
 
While the company has applied for extension of its licenses, and they certainly won’t go off air immediately, the Rs. 2,290 Crore Sun TV stock crash has left many unsettled about the general health of entertainment channels in India. 
 
After all, India has a vibrant and robust audience for entertainment channels. Among the 830 plus channels now live, around half are divided into entertainment and pseudo entertainment. So is there reason to worry? 
 
“National channels are doing fairly well. Ad revenue is on the rise, the economy is looking robust, and media spending is coming back. However, the market is accruing towards 4 or 5 top players. The lower rung is getting squeezed”, Jehil Thakkar, Head of Media and Entertainment, KPMG India says. 
 
India is touted as a ripe ground for entertainment. But is there an over-saturation of entertainment channels like many believe? 
 
“Entertainment channels in major media markets like the US, UK or Japan address very specific demographic niches. We aren’t there yet, and this is majorly because of our distribution infrastructure. Once that matures, and digitization is complete, we can expect further growth”, Thakkar says. 
 
So is the market creating hindrances for new TV channels which might not be able to match up to the might of the big sharks? 
 
Most industry experts believe there’s still a lot of headroom for growth in the Indian market given one is able to garner distribution, and have ad money pouring in.

<ul><li>UPSC has put out an official notification to recruit Intelligence officers and data processing assistants in the <keyword id="69522" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-home-affairs">Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword>. </li><li>The government plans to hire for 29 vacant positions across the <keyword id="91016" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Crime-Records-Bureau">National Crime Records Bureau</keyword> and the Intelligence Bureau. </li><li>The selected candidates will be a part of cyber security, forensics and criminal applications team. </li></ul>The Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) put out a notification to recruit Intelligence officers and data processing assistants at the Ministry of Home Affairs. With this, the government plans to hire for 29 vacant positions across departments. This includes vacancies in the Women Safety Department of the National Crime Records Bureau and the Intelligence Bureau. Data Processing Assistant — Two vacancies in the women's safety department The candidates selected for this role will be responsible for procurement, maintenance and updating software of criminal applications. These engineers will be a part of the administration team which conducts training and provides security assistance of Data Centre and Networks. Those hired will have to undergo a two year probation period The applicants must be aged between 21-30 years. However, upper age limit may be relaxed for those appointed as a government servant before. The minimum educational qualification of a candidate applying for the post of data processing assistant is a master’s degree in computer applications, IT or B.Tech in <keyword id="6390100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="computer-science">Computer Science</keyword> and Engineering. Deputy Central Intelligence Officer — 27 vacancies in the Intelligence Bureau of the ministry The candidates for intelligence team will have to supervise operations across the ministry’s communication network such as audio, video and CCTVs. This also includes maintenance of forensics equipment. Other tasks are research and development in the field of electronics and telecommunications. The selected candidates will have to serve a probation period of one year. The intelligence officer will require a postgraduate degree in science, computer applications or information technology. The applicant can also be an engineering graduate in the field of electronics, telecommunications, computer science and software, or IT. The candidate’s age must not exceed 35 years for general category and 40 years in case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates. UPSC recruitment 2020: Nearly 30 government jobs for engineering and IT graduates have opened up in the Ministry of Home Affairs

The Centre has blocked over 100 websites involved in facilitating organised illegal investments related to economic crimes and task-based part-time job frauds. According to an official statement, these websites were being operated by overseas actors and targets were mostly retired employees, women and unemployed youth looking for part time jobs. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), a wing of the Union Home Ministry, through its vertical National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (NCTAU) had last week identified and recommended that these websites be blocked. Following this, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), invoking its power under the Information Technology Act, 2000, has blocked these websites, the statement said. These websites, which facilitated task-based organised illegal investment related to economic crimes, were learnt to be operated by overseas actors and were using digital advertisement, chat messengers and mule and rented accounts. The proceeds from the large scale economic frauds were seen to be laundered out of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> using card network, crypto currency, overseas ATM withdrawals and international Fintech companies, the statement said. The I4C is an initiative of the Home Ministry to deal with cyber crimes in the country in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. <keyword id="6366773" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="citizens" source="Orion">Citizens</keyword> have been advised to promptly report phone numbers and social media handles used by such fraudsters to the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), the statement said. It said several complaints have been received through 1930 helpline and the NCRP and these offences were posing significant threat to the citizens and also involved data security concerns. These frauds, typically, involve a number of steps that include targeted digital advertisements launched on platforms like Google and Meta using key words like "Ghar baithe job" (Do jobs sitting at home), "Ghar baithe kamai kaise karen" (How to earn by sitting at home) etc. in multiple languages from overseas advertisers. Upon clicking the advertisement, an agent using WhatsApp or Telegram starts conversation with the potential victim, who convinces him or her to perform some tasks like video likes and subscribe, maps rating, etc. Upon completion of task, the victim is given some commission, initially and is asked to invest more to get more returns against given task. After gaining confidence, when victim deposits larger sum, deposits are frozen and thus the victim is duped. As precautionary measure, it is advised to exercise due diligence before investing in any such very high commission paying online schemes sponsored over internet. If an unknown person contacts anyone over WhatsApp or Telegram, refrain from performing financial transactions without verification, the statement said Verify the name of receiver mentioned in UPI App. If receiver is any random person, it may be a mule account and scheme may be fraudulent.Similarly, check the source from where initial commission is received, it said. Citizens should refrain from doing transactions with unknown accounts, as these could be involved in money laundering and even terror financing and lead to blocking of accounts by police and other legal action, the statement said. Over 100 websites blocked for facilitating organised illegal investments

<ul><li><keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword> advocacy group Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has reiterated the concern regarding illegal import, sale and use of signal boosters. </li><li>The <keyword id="62528" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecom">Department of Telecom</keyword> has released several warnings in the matter between 2016 and 2019. </li><li>Signal boosters and repeaters are associated with the degradation of <keyword id="10986122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-signals">mobile signals</keyword> and a decrease in overall service quality.</li></ul>The telecom advocacy group, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/e-commerce/news/amazon-alibaba-flipkart-snapdeal-and-others-get-an-angry-letter-from-indias-telecom-regulator/articleshow/82118919.cms">written to the Department of Telecom</a> (<keyword id="16054" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DoT">DoT</keyword>) reminding them to act on the concern around the illegal sale of mobile signal boosters. These signal boosters and repeaters are said to cause interference with signals from towers impacting the overall cellular network quality. A signal booster is essentially a device that amplifies the mobile phone signal strength within its vicinity. It is used in areas where there is weak or inconsistent signal strength. DoT has released multiple warnings to e-commerce sellers to stop the sale of said items. In a letter to all e-commerce companies on May 1, 2019, DoT had said that e-commerce firms are facilitating and acting as a party to the illegal sale of unauthorised mobile signal boosters. This letter was addressed to <keyword id="18635" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, Flipkart, Indiamart, Alibaba, Aliexpress, eBay, Snapdeal, Shopclues and Rediff. Similar warnings were issued in 2016 as well. What makes signal boosters illegal? These signal boosters, which are not registered, are categorised as illegal because they use a spectrum they haven't paid for. It interferes with the airwaves making it capable of distorting mobile signal for other customers in the vicinity of the booster. These devices are the main reasons for network issues like call drops and low data speeds. They also make mobile handsets transmit higher power, to manage connectivity with the site leading to even higher battery consumption and poor network. The illegal use of such devices leads to the degradation of telecom services instead of solving signal issues. In simple words, using mobile signal boosters is like having illegal electricity or water supply connection from the main supply, which leads to improper distribution for others who are paying for the service. What does the law say? The DoT has been saying that the seller for the wireless equipment needed to have a Dealer Possession License (DPL) under the provisions of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933. According to the Act, no person shall possess wireless telegraphy apparatus except under and in accordance with a licence issued under the Act. In case someone wants to purchase such a device, the customer needs to get a ‘frequency authorisation/agreement in principle letter’ from DoT and then get the wireless operating licence for the same after submitting required papers and spectrum charges. Additionally, in case a wireless device is needed to be imported to India, the importer needs an import licence as per customs rules from regional licensing offices of the telecom ministry after completing the initial process of submitting documents and fees. Apart from putting a regulation in place, the crackdown on such devices will improve the quality of the services and also allow the telcos to obtain a fee against the <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/business/trai-issues-spectrum-usage-charges-sop/cid/1789412">spectrum charges</a> they pay to the DoT. The concerned authorities like DoT and the telecom ministry will also make their share of the revenue from the registration and licence fee. Biggest e-commerce players not complying The scuffle between DoT and e-commerce companies has been going on for a while. Soon after the first letter was written to the e-commerce companies in 2019, Flipkart and Snapdeal accepted the request to remove the signal booster devices from their platforms. However, Amazon says it's a marketplace and shouldn't be held responsible to comply with laws applicable to products. Amazon said that it was not clear on the legal basis of the request to take down these products. “Amazon operates an online marketplace in India. Sellers selling their products through amazon.in marketplace are solely responsible for all necessary product compliance and are required to sell products, which are legally allowed to be sold in India. Whenever concerns about the listed products get raised, we review the case with the sellers," Amazon told <a href="https://www.livemint.com/industry/telecom/amazon-to-keep-selling-illegal-mobile-signal-boosters-despite-telcos-appeal-1555020193105.html">Mint</a>. As of today, Amazon still has similar products listed for sale on its website. Telcos ask for stricter action To crackdown on the illicit use of signal boosters, COAI has asked the DoT to ensure a complete ban on sale both offline and online. It has also asked to raise the issue with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to prevent the import of these devices. The DoT has also been asked to request India’s <keyword id="69522" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-home-affairs">Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword> (MHA) to issue appropriate directions to state police chiefs and chief secretaries to take action under law against the sellers. New Delhi, In a reprieve for many people seeking to resume travel through public transport, <keyword id="2835665" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Ministry-of-Home-Affairs">the Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword> (<keyword id="65491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MHA">MHA</keyword>) on Saturday decided to allow the resumption of metro operations from September 7 in a graded manner. The MHA has issued new guidelines for opening up of more activities in areas outside the containment Zones. Unlock 4, will come into effect from September 1. "Metro rail will be allowed to operate with effect from 7th September 2020 in a graded manner, by <keyword id="9255332" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-ministry-of-housing-and-urban-affairs">the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs</keyword> (MOHUA)/ Ministry of Railways (MOR), in consultation with MHA. In this regard, Standard Operating Procedure (<keyword id="50548" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sop">SOP</keyword>) will be issued by MOHUA", said a statement issued by MHA. The new guidelines, issued today, are based on feedback received from states and UTs, and extensive consultations held with related central ministries and departments. However, schools, colleges, educational and coaching institutions will continue to remain closed for students and regular class activity upto September 30. The Centre has also permitted social/ academic/ sports/ entertainment/ cultural/ religious/ political functions and other congregations with a ceiling of 100 persons, with effect from September 21. However, such limited gatherings can be held with mandatory directives like wearing of face masks, social distancing, provision for thermal scanning and hand washing or use of sanitiser. Open air theatres will also be permitted from September 21.
