<ul class="summary-list"><li>Czech President Miloš Zeman swore in the country's new prime minister from inside an isolation box.</li><li>Zeman was hospitalized Thursday after testing positive for COVID-19 but was released after showing no symptoms. </li></ul><p>There was little fanfare or ceremony as Petr Fiala was officially sworn in as the new prime minister of the <keyword id="12554670" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="czech-republic" source="Orion">Czech Republic</keyword> on Sunday.</p><p>But the ceremony was still a sight to behold, as Czech President Miloš Zeman, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/czech-president-zeman-back-in-hospital--now-with-covid-19-10785329">who tested positive for COVID-19 late last week</a>, performed his presidential duties from inside a transparent isolation cube at the Lany Manor house, near Prague.</p><p>In addition to the acrylic glass box marking the peculiarities of this particular appointment, Zeman was accompanied by health workers dressed in full hazmat suits and was seated in a wheelchair as he recovered from a recent, month-long, non-COVID-19 related hospitalization.</p><p>Zeman, 77, was released from the hospital last Thursday following a 46-day fight with a <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/10/europe/czech-president-milos-zeman-hospital-intl/index.html">liver illness</a> and other health problems but was sent back later that night after testing positive for the <keyword id="11893194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus" source="Orion">coronavirus</keyword>. He was discharged again on Saturday after showing no symptoms and was instructed to isolate.</p><p>Fiala's swearing-in was originally scheduled for Friday but had to be pushed back following Zeman's second hospitalization. The see-through cubicle was created specifically for the occasion, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/28/europe/czech-republic-president-government-covid-intl/index.html">CNN</a>.</p><p>Fiala serves as the chairman of the Czech center-right ODS party, which won big in last month's parliamentary election. He will lead two centrist coalitions consisting of five different political parties after the alliance unseats the current prime minister, populist leader Andrej Babiš. </p><p>As president, Zeman is responsible for selecting a prime minister to form a governmental coalition, so his ongoing absence left the country in political limbo for weeks. Babiš and his current government remain in power until the lower house of the Czech Parliament offers a vote of confidence for the newly formed coalition.</p><p>Zeman said he plans to meet with Fiala's prospective cabinet choices in the coming days in hopes of completing the process by December 13, CNN reported. </p><p>Zeman, who is a notorious lifelong smoker, has had several health problems during his presidency, which began in 2013. According to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/29/world/europe/czech-president-prime-cube.html">The New York Times</a>, he has a history of diabetes and neuropathy in his legs, which prompted him to begin using a wheelchair in April. </p><p>The Czech Republic is <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/coronavirus-infections-hit-new-record-high-in-czech-republic-10779536">battling a surge in COVID-19 cases</a>, setting a new record on Friday with close to 28,000 cases recorded, The Times reported. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/europe-coronavirus-outbreak-smashes-records-new-restrictions-covid-19-2020-10">An ongoing outbreak throughout Europe</a> has prompted multiple countries to reinstate lockdowns and curfews. </p>

<p>Artist David Cerny has chosen to celebrate the occasion with a subtle artwork placed on the River Vltava.</p>

<p>The BBC's Rob Cameron <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-24607870">says that the artwork</a> appears to be a message to leftist President Milos Zeman and his supporters (the artwork faces the Prague Castle, seat of the president). However, Cerny is refusing to comment, saying the artwork speaks for itself.</p>
<p>In September, Cerny <a href="http://www.praguepost.com/news/17323-cerny-flips-bird-at-czech-prez.html">spoke to The Prague Post about Zeman</a>, and his comments weren't positive. "Our president is just another reason not to live in the Czech Republic," he told the paper. "The political system here is not good, most people know that. I think I'd be happy to live in New York and not come back. I mean, I would come back, maybe for like three months in the year or something."</p>
<p>The Prague Post reports that Zeman is out of the country at the moment.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-approves-use-of-troops-in-ukraine-2014-3">Russian military maneuvering</a> in Ukraine over the past few days is nothing new for Putin.</p>
<p>In 2008, Russia waged a quick war with neighboring Georgia, culminating with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-puts-missiles-in-breakaway-country-threatening-us-ally-georgia-2010-8">Putin placing Russian troops</a> in two Georgian break-away regions. Beyond pure military force, Russia is also exploiting its energy reserves as much as possible to bully neighboring countries into submission.</p>
<p>These six countries, although at at times disagreeing with Russia's international policy, have their hands tied due to their reliance on Russian energy.</p>
<p><strong>1. Ukraine</strong></p>

<p>Ukraine <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-03-02/russia-gas-threat-shows-putin-using-pipelines-to-press-ukraine.html">gets half of its natural gas</a> directly from Russia. Since 2006, Russia has cut off gas supplies to Ukraine twice in attempts to steer the country's political policy. Ukraine, the site of extensive Soviet era gas pipelines, also carries half of all Russian gas onwards to the European Union. This ensures that any disruption to Ukrainian gas flow ripples onwards to the rest of Europe.</p>
<p><strong>2. Germany</strong></p>

<p>Germany is linked directly to Russian natural gas reserves through the <a href="http://www.nord-stream.com/">Nord Stream pipeline</a>. This pipeline reflects <a href="http://www.naturalgaseurope.com/germany-russia-energy-diplomacy">Germany's reliance on Russian energy</a>; 60% of all German gas imports came from Russian, along with 40% of all oil imports. This reliance could enable Russia, if push comes to shove, to suddenly close off all sales to Germany as it has done to Ukraine.</p>
<p><span><a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/03/03/ukraine-crisis-germany-idINL6N0LZ0OS20140303">Noah Barkin of Reuters</a> sums up Germany's position: "Heavily dependent on Russian gas and closer to Moscow than any other leading western nation, Germany faces a major policy dilemma as the Ukraine crisis descends into a Cold War-style confrontation of tit-for-tat threats and ultimatums."</span></p>

<p>Russian-Serbian relations have always been strong, with Russia happy to act as the defender of the Serbs since before World War One. Today, this 'fatherly' relationship is being taken to the next level through the building of the South Stream Oil pipeline, <a href="http://www.rferl.org/content/russia-gazprom-serbia-south-stream/25178875.html">the largest foreign investment in Serbia in decades</a>. The pipeline, and the economic stimulus it brings to Serbia, should reinforce the Russian-Serbian relationship.</p>
<p><strong>4. Hungary</strong></p>

<p>Russia currently <a href="http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/europe/140123/russia-nuclear-deal-hungary-power-influence">supplies two-thirds of all natural gas</a> flowing into Hungary. Beyond that, the Russian firm Rosatom is contracted to build two new nuclear reactors in the county for $14 billion. The reactors are incredibly controversial, with members of the EU and opposition parties in <a href="http://budapestbeacon.com/featured-articles/hungarian-public-left-in-the-dark-over-decision-to-build-new-reactors-at-paks-nuclear-power-plant/">Hungary claiming that the reactors are nothing but dirty politics</a> to gain favor with Russia.</p>
<p><strong>5. Czech Republic</strong></p>

<p>The Czech Republic is highly dependent upon Russia for its gas supply, <a href="http://www.energydelta.org/mainmenu/energy-knowledge/country-gas-profiles/country-gas-profile-czech-republic#t42711">importing 88% of all gas from Russia</a> between 2006 and 2010. Milos Zeman, the country's current president, also <a href="http://www.radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/milos-zeman-political-veteran-seeking-to-crown-his-career">received campaign funding</a> from the head of Russian owned Lukoil's Czech office.</p>
<p><strong>6. Bulgaria</strong></p>

<p>Bulgaria is <a href="http://www.themoscowtimes.com/blogs/472490/post/speaking-russian-in-bulgaria-new-government-new-policy/482247.html">completely relent upon Russia</a> for its energy needs. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/09/bulgaria-us-energy-idUSL5E8D97I120120209">Over 95% of its natural gas</a> comes from Russia, its sole nuclear power plant was built by the Soviets, and Russian owned Lukoil is both the country's largest company and owns Bulgaria's largest oil refinery.<strong><br /></strong></p>
<p>Russia is in a prime position to flex its muscles through both military and economic war. Given its extensive energy deals throughout central and eastern Europe, Russia has extra leverage to push its own policies in the region.</p>
<p>In the long run, though, Russia's oil giant <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/shifting-energy-trends-blunt-russias-natural-gas-weapon/2014/02/28/7d090062-9ef7-11e3-a050-dc3322a94fa7_story.html">Gazprom is seeing intense competition</a> emerge from other markets - such as Norway and the United States - that should in time lessen the effectiveness of Putin's bullying attempts.</p>
<p>But for now, Russia's dominance of the energy sector makes it difficult for countries to too brazenly fight against Russian policies.</p>

6 Countries Russia Bullies Through Energy Deals

<p>On Dec. 3, 1938, a British stockbroker made the impromptu decision to cancel his skiing vacation and join his friend Martin Blake in Prague, who had desperately asked for his help. The decision changed his life and saved the lives of 669 people in the process.</p>
<p>Nicholas Winton turned 105 years-old on Monday, celebrating his birthday at the Czech embassy in London with a cake with 105 candles. The Czech officials surprised Winton with the news that the Czech Republic <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/czech-president-honors-sir-nicholas-winton-23780857">will award him the Order of the White Lion</a>, the country's highest honor.</p>
<p>Czech Republic President Milos Zeman will present the Award to Winton in a ceremony in Prague this October.</p>
<p>Winton, who is of German Jewish ancestry,  had heard of the violence against Jewish communities in Germany and Austria, especially the infamous Kristellnacht. After hearing about <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindertransport">the Kinderstransport</a>, an effort of British Jewish agencies to bring 10,000 Jewish children to Great Britain, Winton knew he had to arrange a similar operation in Czechoslovakia.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Winton explained how the operation </span><a href="http://www.powerofgood.net/story.php">got started in The Power Of Good: Nicholas Winton, a documentary on his efforts</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I found out that the children of refugees and other groups of people who were enemies of Hitler weren't being looked after. I decided to try to get permits to Britain for them. I found out that the conditions which were laid down for bringing in a child were chiefly that you had a family that was willing and able to look after the child, and £50, which was quite a large sum of money in those days, that was to be deposited at the Home Office. The situation was heartbreaking. Many of the refugees hadn't the price of a meal. Some of the mothers tried desperately to get money to buy food for themselves and their children. The parents desperately wanted at least to get their children to safety when they couldn't manage to get visas for the whole family. I began to realize what suffering there is when armies start to march."</p>
<p>Winton set up his rescue operation at his hotel in Prague, taking applications from parents and registering the children. The response was huge, with thousands of parents lining up.</p>
<p>Surprisingly, Winton recieved little resistance from the Nazis on his effort to move the children out of the country. </p>
<p><a href="http://abcnews.go.com/WN/PersonOfWeek/story?id=5263516">"We were getting rid of those people Hitler wanted to get rid of</a>," Winton told ABC News in 2008. "I mean, you even had the Gestapo at Wilson Station helping the children onto the trains."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">After a few weeks, Winton left Trevor Chadwick in charge of the Prague operation and returned to London to negotiate where the children would go. Only Great Britain and Sweden agreed to take the children. </span></p>

<p>To get foster families willing to pay the £50 fee for each child, Winton advertised in newspapers, churches, and synagogues with pictures of the children. The effort worked. </p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The last train of children left Prague on August 2</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">2</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, 1939. By the time it was all said and done, he had saved 669 children. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">His greatest regret is that he could not save more. There was to be another train of children on September 1</span><sup style="line-height: 1.5em;">st</sup><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, but Hitler's Germany invaded Poland that day. All borders were closed. The children were never heard from again.</span></p>
<p>Winton never told anyone of his mission, not even his wife, Grete. 50 years later, in 1988, his wife found a scrapbook with photos, documents, and the list of children. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">She brought it to a Holocaust historian, who arranged for Winton's story to appear on BBC's That's Life. Unbeknownst to him, the audience at the taping was filled with his "children."</span></p>

<p>During an interview in 2008, Winton <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irv5RlY2qxE">told a Slovakian teenager his philosophy on life</a>: "You need to be prepared always to help other people if there is an opportunity to do so."</p>
