"I think it would be really fun." </p><p>Simmonds, who had her first breakout role in Todd Haynes' 2017 <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword> "Wonderstruck," recently reprised her role as Reagan in the second "Quiet Place" movie, which was released theatrically in May following a delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. </p><p>In the sequel to the 2018 film, Reagan teams up with new character Emmett (Cillian Murphy) to find survivors of the alien attack that decimated their small town and the rest of the world before the events of the first film.</p><p>With Reagan's father Lee (John Krasinski, who also directed both films) killed by a creature at the <a href="https://www.insider.com/quiet-place-sequel-part-two-what-happens-2021-5">end of the first movie</a>, it's up to Reagan, Emmett, and the other surviving members of the Abbott family - Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and Marcus (Noah Jupe) - to make a new life for themselves. </p><div type="image" title="A Quiet Place Part II" height="1440" width="1920" msid="84811087" hostid="261"></div><p>Simmonds - who's <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/07/millicent-simmonds-tv-adaptation-sara-novic-true-biz-circle-of-confusion-1234787333/">next set to star in the TV show "True Biz,"</a> a coming-of-age story about a Deaf teenager based on Sara Nović's upcoming book of the same name - also opened up about her experience working so closely with Krasinski and Blunt on the set of the second film. </p><p>"John and Emily are incredibly sweet," the actress told Insider. "John is really great about asking important questions, you know, like 'What is it like to be deaf?' or 'What would this really feel like for you?' to help him come up with what would make sense in a scene." </p><p>And Simmonds praised Blunt's approach to acting, telling Insider that she learned so much from the "Jungle Cruise" star.</p><p>"The scenes where Emily had maybe a really emotional scene, or she was the primary character in the scene... I always kind of observed how she prepared," Simmonds said. "She really had to take time to get into character, really feel her emotions."</p><p>"And it was really interesting to see how she kind of workshopped... and she would nail it every time," the "Andi Mack" actress said. 'A Quiet Place 2' star Millicent Simmonds wants to play a villain in her next film: 'I think it'd be really fun'

The film follows the surviving members of the Abbott family as they forge a new life for themselves after the events of the first <keyword id="11897475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie" source="Orion">movie</keyword>.</p><p>It's the rare sequel that lives up to the terrors of its predecessor, and "A Quiet Place Part II" is filled with tense moments and plenty of jump scares. </p><p>But the ending of the film is abrupt and a bit surprising. Some characters' fates are clearly explained, while others' are left more ambiguous. Here's a spoiler-filled breakdown of the end of "A Quiet Place Part II," as well as questions we have that'll hopefully be answered in the third film, which <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/a-quiet-place-part-iii-release-date-1235094161/">was announced by John Krasinski on Tuesday</a>.</p><p><strong>Warning: Major spoilers for "A Quiet Place Part II" below.</strong></p><div type="image" title="a quiet place 2 3" height="700" width="933" msid="83087329" hostid="261"></div><h2>After Emmett (Cillian Murphy) and Regan (Millicent Simmonds) arrive on the island, they team up with another survivor (Djimon Hounsou) and race to the radio station</h2><p>Emmett and Regan are nearly captured by a group of feral survivors near the marina, but manage to steal a boat and sail to the island where the radio signal is apparently coming from. </p><p>During their confrontation on the pier, they realize that the vicious aliens currently hunting humans can't swim — and islands, therefore, are guaranteed safe havens. They arrive on the island battered and weary, but are welcomed by a group of survivors who appear to be living relatively normal, noisy lives.  </p><p>Emmett explains their plan to another survivor (Hounsou), who reveals that he was among a handful of people who managed to escape to the island the day the aliens came (the others were devoured en route). </p><p>But a boat with an alien soon washes ashore, and chaos ensues. Regan, Emmett, and the other survivor create a diversion in a car while racing to the radio station. Once there, they plan to broadcast the frequency from Regan's cochlear implant over the air waves, causing all aliens in the area to become incapacitated. </p><div type="image" title="a quiet place part 2 cillian murphy" height="1211" width="1615" msid="83087330" hostid="261"></div><h2>A tense standoff between an alien, Regan, and Emmett almost ends in tragedy</h2><p>Sadly, the man from the island is killed by a monster when the group arrives at the station, and Regan and Emmett have to maintain complete silence as they sneak into the broadcasting room. </p><p>The hinge on the door leading to the room, however, is extremely squeaky, and the creature moves to attack Regan when she enters. Emmett does his best to defend her, but is wounded by the monster during the scuffle. </p><h2>Regan is ultimately able to broadcast her cochlear implant's frequency across the airwaves</h2><p>With Emmett distracting the creature, Regan is finally able to emit the frequency from her implant across the radio's airwaves — causing all of the monsters in the area, including the ones attacking Emmett and her family back on the mainland, to become severely disoriented. </p><p>Regan ends up bludgeoning the monster in the radio station to death, while back on the mainland, Evelyn (<keyword id="51383" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Emily-Blunt" source="Orion">Emily Blunt</keyword>) successfully shoots the creature terrorizing her, Regan's brother Marcus (Noah Jupe), and the newborn baby Abbott as they shelter in the mill. </p><p>Regan, Evelyn, Marcus, and the baby are all shown to have survived, but Emmett's fate is slightly less clear. The wound he sustained during his defense of Regan appears to be severe and he's shown bleeding heavily. While he's technically still alive when the credits roll, it's unclear whether he'll survive.</p><p>The fate of the other islanders is also left unanswered. Presumably, some of them were killed when the alien arrived via boat, but others are likely to have made it out alive. They're not shown after the alien's initial attack, however, so viewers are left to wonder what exactly happened to them. </p><div type="image" title="a quiet place part 2 millicent simmonds" height="1211" width="1615" msid="83087331" hostid="261"></div><h2>The last moments of the film set up the third movie</h2><p>The third "Quiet Place" film was <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/a-quiet-place-part-iii-release-date-1235094161/">officially confirmed in February 2022</a>, and the ending of "Part II" hints heavily at continuing the story. </p><p>For starters, there's not a lot of exposition after Regan and Evelyn kill the aliens. The Abbotts are shown to have survived, while Emmett remains critically injured, but the screen abruptly cuts to black before revealing anything else. </p><p>As mentioned, there are still some loose ends and unanswered questions (did Emmett survive? What happens to the aliens now? What about the survivors on the island?) that will hopefully be tied up in the third movie, coming 2025.</p><p>Until then, fans will have to wait and see what will become of the surviving Abbotts.</p>

Lee and Marcus, having returned from a trip to a waterfall, quickly try to help her, with Lee taking care of Evelyn and Marcus creating a distraction for the monster. </p><p>But as Evelyn recovers with Lee by her side, they realize that Marcus and Regan are in danger, having inadvertently attracted the attention of the creature. Lee then goes outside to rescue them, reuniting with them briefly before being attacked himself. </p><p>Regan and Marcus hide in a pickup truck, but after Marcus yells upon seeing his dad endure another wound, the creature turns its attention to the children again.</p><p>Lee, however, continues making noise, drawing the attention back to himself. Before he's attacked by the monster another time, he signs "I have always loved you" to Regan. </p><p>The monster then kills Lee, although his death occurs offscreen. Regan and Marcus roll the truck down the hill and find their mother and newborn sibling in the basement. </p><div type="image" title="a quiet place" height="768" width="1024" msid="83061881" hostid="261"></div><h2>The first film ends with the surviving Abbotts preparing to defend themselves in their basement</h2><p>During the creature's earlier attack on the children, they realized that Regan's cochlear implant emits a high frequency sound when in the presence of the monsters, who become defenseless and disoriented upon hearing it. </p><p>As the surviving family members get ready to take on the creature again, Regan places her implant near a microphone, amplifying the frequency. Even though the creature was poised to attack, it becomes confused, allowing Evelyn to shoot and kill it with a shotgun. </p><p>Armed with their newfound knowledge, the Abbotts ready themselves for another attack, as two more creatures are shown approaching their farmhouse. The first film concludes with Evelyn cocking the shotgun, ready to defend her family. </p><div type="image" title="a quiet place part 2 flashback" height="1185" width="1580" msid="83061883" hostid="261"></div><h2>'A Quiet Place Part II' begins with a terrifying flashback</h2><p>As <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEMwSdne6UE">shown in the trailers</a>, the sequel to "A Quiet Place" features a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpdDN9d9Jio">flashback to the before times</a>, when the Abbotts and others in their small town lived normal lives. </p><p>The second movie begins with this flashback, showing the Abbotts going about their business in the minutes before the creatures arrived - which, in the movie's universe, is shown to have occurred in 2020.</p><p>Lee, for instance, stops at a small shop (the spaceship toy from the first movie is shown on a shelf) to pick up some fruit before arriving at Marcus' baseball game, where friends and family are gathered and cheering loudly. </p><p>Once the monsters arrive, however, they begin to destroy everything in sight, including buildings, police cars, and any passerby. Marcus and his mother take refuge behind an overturned car, while Lee and Regan shelter inside a restaurant. </p><div type="image" title="a quiet place part 2" height="1196" width="1600" msid="83061884" hostid="261"></div><h2>The movie then picks up right where the first 'Quiet Place' left off</h2><p>After a few minutes of flashback, "A Quiet Place Part II" jumps to the movie's present day, immediately after the events of the first film, which is revealed to be over a year (474 days, to be exact) since the creatures arrived on Earth.</p><p>With Lee dead and their farm destroyed, the remaining Abbotts have no choice but to head out in search of another place to live. The family is shown leaving their house while the barn burns behind them, and a broken pipe floods the basement. </p><p>They then follow the trail of sand leading to the edge of the property before venturing off into the unknown. </p>

Here's where 2018's 'A Quiet Place' left off - and where its long-awaited sequel picks up

It's that good!</strong></li><li><strong>And bring a friend with you to go see it - or two.</strong></li></ul><p><br>The great thing about the horror genre is story ideas are endless, and Paramount has its hands on the next crowd favorite.</br></p><p>Directed by John Krasinski with a script he co-wrote with story creators Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, "A Quiet Place" (in theaters Friday) is set in a dystopian present where monsters who seek out their victims by sound are wiping out the human race. The survivors literally tip-toe through the world not saying a word.</p><p>The Abbot family - Lee (Krasinski), Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and Marcus (Noah Jupe) - think they have a system down that will keep them alive until someone can figure out how to destroy the monsters. But the opening sequence of "A Quiet Place" shows just how difficult everyday life is. Not giving anything away, let's just say it's an incident that affects the family dynamic for the rest of the movie, and has the story's first of many jump scares.</p><p>The Abbots have stayed alive since the monsters first attacked. They have done so by living on a farm where the walking trails are lined by sand (so no sound is made when walking around), and by using cameras to monitor the property. The family is also building an underground bunker for a new addition to the family, as Evelyn is pregnant. When Lee isn't trying to keep the family safe, he's working on trying to get a hearing aid to work for Regan, who is deaf. In fact, for most of the movie the family members communicate through sign language, and there's only a handful of actual spoken lines.</p><p>This all leads to an explosive ending where all the tricks the Abbots have come up with to survive are used (and mostly fail) and it's their collective will to live that's their only chance for survival.</p><p>Simply put: The movie is really scary and you shouldn't see it alone. Take a friend. Take two friends. Go to a showing that will have lots of people in the theater. In fact, the more people you see the movie with just builds up the fright even more. Believe the hype: John Krasinski's 'A Quiet Place' is the next hit horror movie and will scare the heck out of you

It's a widening of a world."</li></ul><p> </p><p>John Krasinski is not shy to admit he had no interest in doing a sequel to "A Quiet Place."</p><p>The $17 million horror movie, in which a family fends off creatures that kill you if you make a sound, was a cash cow for Paramount in 2018, as the movie took in an incredible <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=aquietplace.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$340.6 million worldwide</a> at the box office. Of course, the executives wanted Krasinski - who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie alongside his wife Emily Blunt - to make another.</p><p>But in rewriting the original script from screenwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, Krasinski felt he had pulled off what he set out to do: tell a unique, family-focused genre movie. What else could he offer a potential franchise? Well, he admitted he did have, as he put it, one "tiny idea."</p><p>"I told them I wasn't going to participate in [a sequel] and to find a new writer and director," Krasinski told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-krasinski-on-a-quiet-place-success-and-plans-for-the-sequel-2018-11">Business Insider. </a>But when the movie's producer Drew Form asked for some guidance in the search, Krasinski revealed the sequel idea he had. "Drew was very smart and said, 'Think on it some more while we have these meetings with other people.' Then he threw the Jedi mind trick of asking me to just write the sequel, and he sucked me in."</p><p>Clearly, Form, and likely everyone at Paramount, knew that for a successful "A Quiet Place" franchise to work it would help if Krasinski stayed on board. "My hope is people want to revisit this world and revisit those stakes and those rules to have to abide by."</p><p>Krasinski said he's taking a similar approach to writing the sequel as he did to the original. Krasinski wasn't a huge fan of the horror genre before making "A Quiet Place," so he said he set out to figure out what made <em>him</em> scared and then used that to move forward with the movie. With the sequel, he said he hasn't reached out to directors he knows for guidance on how to make a follow-up. She said, 'This isn't a sequel at all - this is the second book in a series of books. John Krasinski explains why 'A Quiet Place 2' will not feel like a traditional sequel

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Paramount Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">"A Quiet Place."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>"A Quiet Place" had one test screening and audiences were very confused while watching it.</strong></li><li><strong>According to the producers behind the movie, Platinum Dunes' Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form, the CGI wasn't ready yet to have the scary monster in the screening.</strong></li><li><strong>In fact, some of the footage the audience saw was director John Krasinski in a motion capture suit playing the monster.</strong></li></ul><p><em><strong>Warning: Minor spoiler below if you haven't seen "A Quiet Place."</strong></em></p><p>John Krasinski's latest directing effort, "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/a-quiet-place">A Quiet Place,</a>" scored a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-quiet-place-wins-weekend-box-office-2018-4">huge $50 million opening weekend</a> for Paramount over the weekend thanks to its frightening premise: monsters that kill anything that makes a sound. </p><p>But how would the movie be if the monsters never appeared on screen? That's what a test screening audience had to endure. </p><p>According to Platinum Dunes heads Andrew Form and Bradley Fuller, the producers behind the hit movie, going through the process of test screening "A Quiet Place" was more excruciating than usual because none of the monster CGI from Industrial Light and Magic was ready yet. </p><p>In its place were basic plate graphics of the monsters or footage where someone dressed in a motion capture suit doing the monster's movements in the scene.</p><p>In fact, Krasinski himself played the monster in some scenes.</p><p><span>"Sometimes John was in the motion capture suit playing the monster," said Form. Platinum Dunes also produces Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies, and they said it's always weird to test those movies without the CGI turtles finished. But for "A Quiet Place," they admitted it was a little more confusing for audiences to understand what was going on.</p><p>Take, for instance, the pinnacle scene in the movie where one of the monsters runs away from <span>Regan (Millicent Simmonds) because her hearing aid hurts its sensitive ears.</span></p><p><span>"When her hearing aid goes off in the cornfield you have her in the shot but there was nothing behind her, so the audience did not understand that a creature came up behind her," Form said.</span></p><p><span>So the movie went into its world premiere at the sci-fi/horror-loving South by Southwest Film Festival a month ago coming off a test screening that confused audiences and likely wasn't very scary because there wasn't much monster footage.</span></p><p><span>Thankfully, ILM delivered the monster CGI in time and the audience loved the movie. This led to a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before the movie's theatrical release.</span></p><p><span>"If there was optimism it was self-created," Fuller said of the lead-up to the SXSW screening. "Usually when you go into a screening like that you know what you have, this was totally blind. It was crazy. We were all very apprehensive. When the movie ended and the people started cheering I put my head on my wife's shoulder and cried because it was so fraught with tension and emotion. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>"A Quiet Place" is now a box-office hit, which isn't just a surprise for most in Hollywood, but also for those who made it.</strong></li><li><strong>The production company behind the movie, Platinum Dunes, told Business Insider about the test screening that left its audience confused, and the anxiety of showing the finished movie for the first time.</strong></li></ul><p><br>This weekend Paramount's new horror movie, "A Quiet Place," about a family forced to live in silence to hide from monsters that kill anything that makes a sound, won the weekend box office after earning an impressive <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-quiet-place-wins-weekend-box-office-2018-4">$50 million</a> domestically - exceeding all industry projections.</br></p><p>Made for $17 million, the third (and by far most successful) directing effort by actor John Krasinski snuck up on everyone in Hollywood to become the latest hit horror movie. And according to the producers behind the movie, Andrew Form and Bradley Fuller of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platinum_Dunes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Platinum Dunes</a>, no one involved with the movie knew they had a potential hit on their hands until about a month ago.</p><h2>Horror remake kings</h2><p>Form and Fuller, along with their mega-blockbuster filmmaker friend Michael Bay, started Platinum Dunes in 2001 and quickly made a name for themselves remaking classic horrors like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (2003), "The Amityville Horror" (2005), "Friday the 13" (2009), and "A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). They made a nice profit on all of them - "Chainsaw Massacre" made <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=tcm03.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$107 million worldwide</a> on a $9.5 million budget, "Amityville" made <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=amityvillehorror05.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$108 million worldwide</a> on a budget of $19 million, and "Elm Street" made over <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=nightmareonelmstreet10.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$115 million worldwide</a> on a $35 million budget.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Since then, the company has expanded its portfolio. It got the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, releasing two movies on the characters for Paramount. It teamed with Jason Blum at Blumhouse Productions to make "The Purge" movies - three releases have earned a combined <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=purge.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$319.8 million worldwide</a> (all made for $10 million or under), with a prequel, "The First Purge," coming July 4. And it's developing TV projects like "The Last Ship" for TNT and the upcoming Amazon series, "Jack Ryan," starring Krasinski.<p>But Platinum Dunes' comfort zone will always be horror, and it proved this weekend it's a major player in the genre.</p><h2>Krasinski's power play</h2><p>Screenwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck wrote the "A Quiet Place" script on spec and 18 months ago, while deep into preproduction on "Jack Ryan," Form and Fuller got a call from their agents at WME that they wanted to pass along the script, which they described as a "high concept" genre movie.</p><p>"They send it over and the script is 67 or 68 pages long, and I'm like, 'This is a movie? This is like a one-hour pilot,'" Form told Business Insider. "When we went through it you realize there's no dialogue in the movie. The script had a map of the farm and numbers on a page for a countdown. There were literally pages that were just one number. So it wasn't even like the script had pages of full text. But the story was there."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>They took the project to Paramount, where Platinum Dunes has a first look deal, and the studio bought it. Then Form and Fuller reached out to their "Jack Ryan" star, John Krasinski, to see if he would play the role of the father in the movie, Lee Abbott.<p>"John called back a couple of weeks later and said, 'I definitely want to play the dad, but I also want to rewrite the script and direct it,'" Form said. He and Fuller quickly agreed.</p><p>The project became even more attractive when Krasinski's wife, Emily Blunt, signed on to play the role of the mother. On paper, it all seemed right. But would audiences get a "silent" horror movie?</p><h2>A test screening leads to lots of anxiety</h2><p>Form and Fuller said they only did one test screening of the movie before its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March, and it got mixed reactions because of one obvious omission.</p><p>"The big problem was there was no creature in the test," Form said. "It was either plates or a motion-capture actor. Sometimes John was in the motion capture suit playing the monster. In that basement scene he was the creature down there."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Not having a creature in the test screening was most apparent in the scene where the monster runs away from the daughter, Regan (Millicent Simmonds), because her hearing aid hurts its sensitive ears.</p><p>"When her hearing aid goes off in the cornfield you have her in the shot but there was nothing behind her, so the audience did not understand that a creature came up behind her," Form said.</p><p>But that scene worked incredibly well at the SXSW screening, when audience could see the terrifying creatures brought to CGI life by Industrial Light and Magic.</p><p>However, the uncertainty leading up to the night of that screening had everyone on edge. Though Paramount studio executives had seen cuts and liked what they saw, as Form put it, "1,200 strangers in a theater can tell you something very different."</p><p>"If there was optimism it was self-created," Fuller said of the lead-up to the SXSW screening. "Usually when you go into a screening like that you know what you have, this was totally blind. It was crazy. We were all very apprehensive. When the movie ended and the people started cheering I put my head on my wife's shoulder and cried because it was so fraught with tension and emotion. Because we had no idea."&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Now the movie is riding high. Leading up to its opening weekend it was sporting a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. And Form and Fuller now have some bragging rights on their horror colleague, Jason Blum, as "A Quite Place" topped the opening weekend box office of Blumhouse's last two hit movies - "Get Out" (<a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=blumhouse2.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$33.3 million</a>) and "Split" (<a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=split2017.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$40 million</a>).<p>"A Quiet Place" is the latest example that audiences will come out to theaters for more than just superhero movies and "Star Wars." And though Platinum Dunes has no problem getting into the blockbuster game - it's one of the production companies on the upcoming first Transformers spin-off movie, "Bumblebee" - the company is also striving to develop genre projects that are high in originality and will attract studios.</p><p>"It's a miracle that a major studio made a movie that is practically devoid of dialogue," said Fuller, who wouldn't address the possibility of a sequel to "A Quiet Place" (though with its big opening weekend number, it would be shocking if Paramount doesn't want one). "But I also think studios recognize they have to make concepts that get people to leave their homes, so as producers it's incumbent upon us to find things that will get people to go watch a movie in a movie theater. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Paramount</span></p><p class="caption">"A Quiet Place."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>"A Quiet Place" director and star John Krasinski talked to Business Insider about making a movie he didn't know if anyone would like.</li><li>He also touched on why he decided to put on a motion-capture suit and act as the creature at the end of the movie, and the disastrous reaction by the test screening audience when they saw him in it.</li><li>Krasinski said after talking to his wife and costar Emily Blunt, he realized that the sequel to the movie is actually not <strong><em>a sequel</em></strong>.</li><li>Krasinski explained why he's not a fan of the "Popular Film" Oscar category idea.</li></ul><p> </p><p>It was one of the riskiest releases by a big studio in 2018: a horror movie with very little dialogue directed by the guy best known for making funny faces to the camera on "The Office."</p><p>But Paramount, John Krasinski, and his movie "A Quiet Place" are now the toast of Hollywood. The horror, starring Krasinski and his wife Emily Blunt, which follows a family trying to survive from creatures who kill anything that makes a sound, became a critical darling, a box-office sensation (made for $17 million, it earned over <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=aquietplace.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$340 million worldwide</a> at the box office), and is now in the hunt for Oscar recognition.</p><p>Business Insider chatted with Krasinski the day after "A Quiet Place" was recognized as one of the 10 best movies of the year by the National Board of Review (one step closer to Oscar glory). We delved into what it was like making a movie no one involved knew if audiences would like, spoke about why after initially declining to make a sequel he's now on board, and the reason he wouldn't have wanted his movie to be considered for the controversial "Popular Film" Oscar category.</p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio:</strong> Can you recall the moment when you knew this movie could actually work?</p><p><strong>John Krasinski:</strong> I remember we were filming a scene where Emily was doing home schooling with Noah [Jupe, who plays the son, Marcus] and it was day three and I had written the movie with sign language. So it was that thing of, "Can we pull this off?" But every day that went by was helpful to see it play out, other than theorize that it would be great.</p><p>But in that scene two things happened. Emily was obviously amazing, but one of the things is air started coming out of her mouth when she was mouthing the words as she was signing. There was something so beautiful in that. In that moment, I realized you can even communicate with breath. With no voice. That was really beautiful to me.</p><p>Then on top of that was Noah. To watch this kid dealing with these circumstances, that are completely imaginary, but heavy for a kid to deal with - apocalyptic, losing a family member, a father who has fallen out of love with the whole family - these are big themes and this kid was able to articulate in that one scene such powerful emotion that it felt so real. I genuinely started tearing up behind the monitor watching this kid act because it was so moving. I remember after that I turned to my producer and I said, "Holy sh--, dude, this might actually work!" And he said, "Hey, man, it's day three! It's a little too late to say this might work." So from that moment on I learned to keep my excitement to myself that this magic trick might actually work.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Paramount</span></p><p class="caption">John Krasinski on the set of "A Quiet Place."</p></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> But that's fascinating that it wasn't in post production or watching it with an audience, though I'm sure that confirmed it, but that you could even feel the movie working on set.</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> Absolutely. And I think that's the thing about a magic trick. You plan and plan and plan, but at the end of the day you've got to pull it off. It is based on what the audience takes from it. With this in particular, we did need the audience to know if the magic trick worked. You just keep hoping it's going to work. We felt we had made something that was either an arthouse movie that no one will ever see, but we love it, or someone might actually like it.</p><p>So the day before we world premiered it at SXSW, I was sitting in the mixing stage with my sound designer and mixer and we were literally putting on the final moments of the movie at 5:30 the morning of the day we were flying to Austin to show the movie. It was insane. And we all finished the movie and everyone was feeling really proud and I turned to my sound designer who has done everything from "Saving Private Ryan" to a Terrence Malick movie, and I said, "Is this going to work? Is this too much for people?" And I'll never forget he said, "I don't know man, but you got to go with it now. When are you ever going to be able to take this big of a swing again?" And I thought, "Thank you but that wasn't the compliment I was looking for." So to the last minute we knew we were pushing the boundaries. Not to sound corny, but this is the reason I got into this business. No one gets into this wanting to do cookie-cutter stuff. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> One of the growing legends of your movie was that for the one test screening you had there's footage of you in a motion-capture suit acting out the final scene as the creature confronting Emily Blunt and Millicent Simmons' characters. Explain how it came to you getting in the suit.</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> We had <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0268141/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scott Farra</a>, who is one of the original five guys at Industrial Light and Magic, and he was basically going to be our consultant for 24 hours to explain how our movie would interface with ILM, because they did all the creature work. And he ended up staying on for the whole movie, seven more weeks, which he hadn't done for years and years. And he said he did that because this kind of movie is why he got in the business. He said it was like summer camp all over again. So me doing the creature was the summer camp vibe. Scott was on set that day and we were talking about how the creature moves through the room. And Scott kept saying, "John, he's low to the ground, so we got to make sure the camera knows he's low to the grown for eye line," and we were talking it through and I finally said, "Yeah, that's not how I see it, I sort of see it like this," and Scott goes, "Just put on the suit, man." And I was like, "What?" He was like, " Just put on the suit and do it." And I was like, "Alright." So I went upstairs, put on the suit, still had my Vans on. So during the test screening we were like 86% percent of the movie through and we were shocked that they really liked this movie, then all of a sudden my giant foot with Vans on shows up and we slowly pan up my very colorful, very tight revealing suit, and end on me with a beard pretending to roar. I think there is even audio of me being like [<em>high pitched</em>] "Rooooaaaarrr." And the entire place exploded into laughter and I was like, "Our movie is doomed."</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> "What have I done!"</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> Right. "What have I done! I've just made the worst greatest comedy."</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Will we see that footage, ever?</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> With any luck, no. Before going with that, what was your ending?</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> It comes back to letting things be organic. I love that. Collaboration is king on all my sets, I learned that a long time ago: best idea ends up on the screen. I don't care if it's mine, I legitimately couldn't care less. So one day [producer] Drew [Form] said, "I have to talk to you about something," and I think it was two weeks before we shot this scene, it was down to the wire. I had the ending of Milly [Simmons, who plays the daughter, Regan] putting the hearing aid up to the microphone and that would kill the creature. And I liked that. One of the first ideas I had on the rewrite was that this girl who is the black sheep ends up being the superhero of our movie. But what happened organically through the shoot, the family became the power. But I felt she still needed to be the hero, that her greatest weakness is her greatest strength. So Drew said, "I think Emily needs to shoot the creature." And I said, "Why?" And he said, "I just think that's what the audience wants." And I said, "With all due respect, that's a producer note, I don't think I'm going to do that. You need to give me more reason than 'The audience will love it.'" And I went home and I thought about it, not thinking I would go for it. The next morning I drove to set and I listened to a podcast and randomly it was an old interview with Steven Spielberg from 1979 and this journalist asked why should we pay attention to these New Hollywood directors when we have these other great directors like Truffaut and others? And he said, "Because we can make great art, but we can also have fun, too." And I thought, that's it. If I can pull this off not just because a producer thinks the audience will like it but make it an elegant moment, that's it. So I told Drew I got it. Yes, the mom kills the creature, but it's played out where it's the mom realizing that her daughter is doing this. She has the power to beat them. And it then becomes this team ending. And the key to it all is realizing this heroic moment but then knowing it's not the end. The gun cocking. Going to take a big turn here, have you <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2AsIXSh2xo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seen the trailer to the Netflix movie "Bird Box"</a> yet?</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> No, I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard about it and it's one of those things where it sounds like a really cool idea. I'm psyched to see it.<br /> <br /><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> I bring that up because, at least from the trailer, the movie seems like a distant cousin to "A Quiet Place," with the premise being that people need to stay blind essentially to stay alive. Does that concern you at all that when the sequel to "A Quiet Place" comes out people may have become a little tired of this kind of sensory horror.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Paramount</span></p><p class="caption">Emily Blunt in "A Quiet Place."</p></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Krasinski:</strong> No. I mean, most sequels are a hero or villain returning but there's no story behind it. It's basically, let's give the audience the character they want. And I think the brilliant thing about "A Quiet Place" is there's a world. I wasn't going to do a sequel. I told them I wasn't going to participate in one and to find a new writer and director. They asked for guidance and I had this tiny little idea and then Drew was very smart and said, "Think on it some more while we have these meetings with other people." Then he threw the Jedi mind trick of asking me to just write the sequel and he sucked me in. But me going from not wanting to participate in a sequel to doing it is the same reason I hope people will want to see on. My hope is people want to revisit this world and revisit those stakes and those rules you have to abide by. That's my hope. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Have you gone to filmmaker friends who have done sequels and asked them some keys to doing it successfully?</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> No, and the reason why is because I didn't go to anybody on the first one. I had never done a genre movie so I actually made the conscious decision to not go out to anyone. The same weakness I had by not being a genre fan - but I mean I went back and watched everything before directing this - I thought would be my greatest strength. I wasn't stealing techniques, I basically took a notebook and wrote down everything that scared me. What parts of storytelling scare me? I became my own test audience. So for a sequel, I think I kind of have to do the same thing. If I start focusing on something I have never done before and asking people how they did it then I'll dilute the experience. I don't even see it as a sequel. Emily actually blew my mind by categorizing it the correct way after I pitched it to her, she said, "This isn't a sequel at all, this is the second book in a series of books. It's a widening of a world." And I thought that's the best way to look at it. It doesn't feel like a sequel, it's a continuation of living in that world. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> For the second movie do you feel you can be as quiet, meaning sound design, as you were with the first movie? Or was that what was special about "A Quiet Place" and now you have to explore the next story another way?</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> It's got to be whatever is organic to the film. I remember reading Steven Soderbergh talking about the editing process and he said, I'm paraphrasing, but that at some point it becomes an organic being that will spit out any bad idea. And I think that's how I feel about this. I can't wait to get in there and keep writing and see what this movie wants to allow itself to be. And that will happen in the script process and the shooting and the editing. But I think what's cool about the second part of this movie is the same set of rules have to apply. I can't just introduce a world where you can make a ton of sound, and if I did there would have to be a reason for it. So it's figuring out if there are smart and clever ways to do it. And I have to give Paramount a lot of credit, I said to them the reason I didn't want to do a sequel is I don't want to do anything just to do it. I understand you made a lot of money but I'm not your guy if you're just going to crank it out. And they were so respectful. This audience response is so unique to any studio that we need to respect the people who gave us that opportunity. Because I think this is the type of movie that would have been considered if the Academy went forward with it. Hypothetically, if you woke up the morning of nominations and were told you were chosen in that category, what would you have thought?</p><p><strong>Krasinski:</strong> I didn't get a chance to think about it much when it was first announced because I was shooting "Jack Ryan," but this journalist, CNN's Frank Pallotta, <a href="https://mobile.twitter.com/frankpallotta/status/1027220118462509056?s=12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted what I think is the most poignant point</a>. The top 10 grossing movies of all time were either nominated for best picture, won best picture, or in the case of "Snow White" was given a honorary Oscar. That to me is film. Everything should be judged on its own merit of the same medium. The second you start putting them in smaller categories and subcategories we might be hurting the idea of what we're celebrating. That's the way I feel about it. I think the way that guy very eloquently put it is the popular category seems to have forgotten that the popular category has existed this whole time. By not just box office, that's one way to say you're popular, but the other is to say was it just a movie people loved that year? And all those movies on that list were nominated because they were just good. So personally I'm glad there's not a popular category because if people don't think "A Quiet Place" is one of the best movies of the year, then that's their subjective choice and I totally respect that.
