While this may have been the young actor’s mostly harmless attempt at sounding relatable, gluten and <keyword id="20158013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lactose-intolerance" source="keywords">lactose intolerance</keyword> is a real health concern for millions of Indians. And taking these tests is among the most recommended ways to understand and alter our diets. <h2>Gluten allergy is not new in India, gluten is!</h2>A gluten allergy, often referred to as <keyword id="22227619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gluten-intolerance" source="keywords">gluten intolerance</keyword> or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), is a condition where the immune system reacts negatively to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Unlike celiac disease, gluten sensitivity does not cause damage to the small intestine, but it can trigger uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue and headaches after consuming gluten-containing foods — such as bread. When asked if more and more Indians were reporting gluten allergies, nutritionist Dr Meghana Pasi explained that it wasn’t entirely true. “An increase in the Indians’ wheat consumption was a result of colonisation”, she said. Most Indians primarily consumed millet before the British’s influence and wheat became a staple in our diets roughly between 50-100 years ago. And it has taken a few decades to associate the discomfort many feel after consuming wheat with a gluten allergy. So, claiming that gluten consumption is perfectly okay since people in the past did it too, is infact entirely inaccurate. <h2>A significant proportion of Indians are lactose intolerant</h2>After Janhvi implies that these allergies are a hoax, Saif attempts to correct her saying, “Hum jab bade ho jate hai to sab cheezein nahi khani chahiye, bacho ko khani chhaiye ( We should refrain from eating certain things when we get older; kids should eat all of this).” In response Janhvi says, "Main toh doodh peeti hun (I still drink milk).” Anecdotal fallacy again. Sigh. Lactose intolerance is a digestive condition where the body is unable to fully digest lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens when the small intestine doesn't produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which is needed to break down lactose into simpler sugars for absorption. As a result, lactose passes undigested into the colon, where bacteria ferment it, causing symptoms like bloating, diarrhoea, gas and stomach cramps. The severity of symptoms varies, depending on how much lactose a person can tolerate. This author, for instance, needs just one pizza slice to develop a terrible gastric headache that leads to violent episodes of puking. Regarding her claim that we have been consuming milk for ages, India has seen a notable rise in lactose intolerance as dietary patterns evolve. Studies suggest that one-third of Indians may have some degree of lactose intolerance due to genetic factors. Historically, the diet in many parts of India included fermented or low-lactose dairy products like yogurt and paneer, which are easier to digest. However, the growing consumption of milk-based products and <keyword id="20490015" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="processed-foods" source="keywords">processed foods</keyword> may be contributing to more visible cases of lactose intolerance. Furthermore, even without the intolerance debate, science has shown that humans’ capacity to absorb milk decreases as we grow old. By the time we’re in our mid-thirties, these problems can manifest as gastrointestinal problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastro-esophagal reflux disease (GERD). So, while Janhvi Kapoor's casual dismissal of gluten and lactose allergies may have been made in jest, it brought forth a good opportunity to discuss a larger issue of misinformation about <keyword id="23476473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dietary-sensitivities" source="keywords">dietary sensitivities</keyword>. As allergies and intolerances become more widely understood and recognised, particularly in the Indian context, it’s important to acknowledge that the foods we’ve consumed for generations may no longer suit everyone. Of late, many celebrities like Janhvi, who boast millions of followers, have been caught spreading health-related misinformation intentionally or unintentionally. According to the medical board, some examples of <keyword id="21712332" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ultra-processed-food" source="keywords">ultra-processed food</keyword> include commercially produced <keyword id="93269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bread" source="Orion">bread</keyword>, breakfast cereals and even other staples such as refined flour and <keyword id="6446947" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="butter" source="Orion">butter</keyword>. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What counts as &quot;ultra-processed&quot;?" comment="subhead" text="What counts as &quot;ultra-processed&quot;?">What counts as "ultra-processed"?</cmsannotation> Before you throw your snack out the window, let’s understand what “ultra-processed” means. Considering that we don't live in a utopia where we can just head out and bite the stalks off a wheat plant for sustenance, most of the food we consume has to undergo some processing to make them suitable for consumption. Thus, grains are grinded into flour, fruits may have to be refrigerated and milk pasteurised — all forms of processing that make these healthy food items ready to eat. However, in the pursuit to improve taste, appearance or shelf-life, many companies subject their food products to extensive industrial processing by integrating a concerning amounts of additives such as preservatives, sweeteners, colourings, flavourings, emulsifiers, and other substances that would not typically find in an everyday kitchen. These are massive no-nos, as far as the ICMR is concerned. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Heart attack, stroke, obesity" comment="subhead" text="Heart attack, stroke, obesity">Heart attack, stroke, obesity</cmsannotation> These ultra-processed foods (UPFs) also tend to be excessively high in fats and unusually low in fibres and essential <keyword id="19896135" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nutrients" source="keywords">nutrients</keyword>. Studies have shown that a diet that is rich in such items can lead to obesity, hasten ageing, and are associated with a higher risk of heart attack, strokes, diabetes and poorer overall health. Perhaps the worst problem with them is that such foods are typically very cheap and easily accessible, leading them to be a popular choice for the masses. Further, enriching UPFs with nutrients still does nothing to make them wholesome or healthy. The ICMR advises against overconsumption of “level C” foods, which means that these edibles are high in sugars and salts and/or have been subjected to extensive techniques that break down nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fibre in them. Such processes include over-refining of flours, juicing of fruits, subjecting the food items to high temperatures and pressures, and canning and preservation. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="List of foods classified as ultra-processed" comment="subhead" text="List of foods classified as ultra-processed">List of foods classified as ultra-processed</cmsannotation> According to the ICMR, Group C food items include commercially produced bread, breakfast cereals, cakes, chips, biscuits, fries, jams, sauces, mayonnaise, commercially produced ice cream, protein packs powders, peanut butter, soy chunks, tofu, frozen foods with additives, commercially produced cheese, butter, paneer with additives, meats, plant-based meats, refined flours of cereals, millets and legumes, energy drinks, health drinks added to milk, beverages and fruit juices. The group also includes many culinary ingredients such as cooking oils, refined sugars, salt and spices, since cosmetic food additives such as artificial colours and emulsifiers are often used in their processing. As social media drives a growing interest in healthier eating habits, it becomes crucial for consumers to discern and avoid these heavily processed items, favouring more natural and minimally processed alternatives to promote better overall health. However, moderation is perhaps the word of the year, and it would do well to learn about the stuff that goes inside our bodies, rather than live in fear of them. Bread, butter, milk-based health drinks, cooking oils classified as ultra-processed food, ICMR advises restriction

That choice has drawn complaints from the US dairy industry, which argues that the term should only apply to animal milks.The FDA's draft guidance acknowledges that consumers understand that plant-based options aren't the same as animal milk, the Agency said in a press release. The FDA wrote the guidance after reviewing public comments that it started gathering in 2018.It also recommends that plant-based milk makers include a statement on their label clarifying the differences between their product and cow's milk. "For example, the label could say, 'Contains lower amounts of Vitamin D and calcium than milk,'" the FDA said.The proposed rules are not final, and companies do not have to follow them, though many food companies follow FDA guidelines closely. The FDA will accept comments on the rules until April 23."We applaud FDA's recognition that consumers understand the difference between plant-based milk and cow's milk and that shoppers choose to purchase plant-based milk specifically because it is not cow's milk," Madeline Cohen, senior regulatory attorney at the Good Food Institute, which advocates for plant-based brands, said in a statement.But the Institute pushed back on the FDA's suggestion that companies should compare the nutritional value of their products with cow's milk. "The guidance is premised on the idea that consumers are somehow confused by plant-based milks' nutrition, despite the fact that FDA already requires key nutrients to be included on the Nutrition Facts panel," Cohen said.The National Milk Producers Federation, which represents the US animal milk industry, said the proposed guidance would allow plant-based companies "to continue inappropriately using dairy terminology." On Twitter, former FDA Comissioner Scott Gottlieb said that the proposed guidance "strikes careful balance" between plant-based and animal milks."Even though almonds don't lactate, almond milk can still be called milk," he wrote.Milk was the largest plant-based food category in 2021, with sales totaling $2.6 billion, according to the <a href="https://www.plantbasedfoods.org/2021-u-s-retail-sales-data-for-the-plant-based-foods-industry/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Plant Based Foods Association.</a> Meat came in second at $1.4 billion. You can call almond milk 'milk,' but there's a catch, the FDA says

New Delhi [India], April 25 (ANI): Constrained supplies of milk and wheat, coupled with a volatile international crude oil market with OPEC+ countries deciding to cut crude oil production from May 2023 are factors that may, going forward, influence the inflation outlook in India, Ministry of Finance's Monthly Economic Review report put out on Tuesday noted. Milk inflation in India has remained elevated for several months due to a growing supply-demand mismatch. Milk production has been impacted by a Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) infecting millions of cattle in late 2022, its prices also rose because of high fodder and transportation costs. To meet the growing demand and considering the fact that the supply of milk in the ensuing summer season being a lean season may be less, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying earlier this month said there were demands from several dairy cooperatives for the import of conserved dairy commodities - milk fat and powder. The ministry also added since the process of import takes time, the necessary back-end processes for need-based imports are being put in place to timely manage the situation in case of any eventuality. For wheat, there were reports from various key growing states that unseasonal rains have flattened standing crops in some regions. Wheat, a rabi crop was in an advanced maturing stage and was expected to hit mandis in a fortnight or so. "Although the second advance estimate has projected a record foodgrain production, the crop damage caused by unseasonal rains and hailstorms in some parts of the country since mid-March may constrain wheat production, besides perishable items such as fruits and vegetables," the Ministry of Finance's monthly report said. A survey conducted by Agri Watch, an Indian market information and analysis firm specialising in agricultural commodities, has estimated India's wheat production of 102.89 million tonnes in the 2022-23 crop season, reduced from 104.24 million tons (estimated in March 2023) due to unseasonal rains and hail storm faced by key wheat producing states towards the end of March. The estimates were based on the survey conducted in two phases across nine states- Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Notably, last year, too, the wheat crop was affected, not due to rains but heatwaves. That came on top of the conflict in Ukraine. Global <keyword id="3854307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wheat-prices" source="Orion">wheat prices</keyword> have shown substantial volatility in the past year as both the countries -- Ukraine and Russia -- are two major suppliers of wheat. Multiple rounds of heat waves in several wheat-growing regions in India before the rabi harvest last year affected crops. Wheat pods in the mature stage typically shrink if overexposed to heat. To manage the overall food security of the country as well as meet the needs of the neighbouring and other vulnerable countries amid the double whammy, India then amended the export policy of wheat by putting its export under the "prohibited" category, which is still in force. RBI has been engaged in necessary policy actions to counter inflationary pressures and support growth. The Reserve Bank of India, in its first monetary policy review meeting in 2023-24, decided to keep the key benchmark interest rate -- the repo rate -- unchanged at 6.5 per cent, to assess the effects of the policy rate tightening done so far on various macroeconomic parameters. Barring the recent pause, RBI has so far raised the repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks, by 250 basis points cumulatively since May 2022 in the fight against inflation. In the US, the interest rate is currently at 4.75 to 5.00 per cent, which was near zero during the initial days of the pandemic. Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline and vice versa. The RBI sees retail inflation declining to 5.2 per cent in the full year of 2023-24, lower than the 5.5 per cent attained in 2021-22 -- which was mostly free of the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In India, headline consumer price index-based (CPI) inflation (or retail inflation) has gradually declined from its peak of 7.8 per cent in April 2022 to 5.7 per cent in March 2023. (ANI)

Herders occasionally survive on only camel milk while taking camels vast distances to graze. In commercial-camel-milk settings, camels can produce 5 to 20 liters a day. Camel milk tastes similar to cow milk, but typically it's creamier and slightly saltier. India and Pakistan produce about 80% of all buffalo milk worldwide, making these regions one of the few places in the world where cows are actually in the minority when it comes to dairy production.Narrator: Water buffalo can produce more milk than cows, and their milk is also thicker and whiter. Buffalo milk is used to make Surti paneer, a soft cheese that borrows its name from the town of Surat in India, where this specific paneer is thought to have originated.Narrator: Sahiwal is another animal that has most of its milk produced in India and Pakistan. Sahiwal originated in the dry Punjab region, which lies along the central Punjab. Sahiwal are a type of cow but have a distinctive large hump on their back. Due to their heat tolerance and high milk production, sahiwals are one of the best dairy breeds in India and Pakistan. Kalari cheese is a traditional ripened cheese product indigenous to Rajouri, Poonch, and Udhampur in India's Jammu and Kashmir region. It's a very dense cheese that is usually sautéed in its own fat and salted while serving.Narrator: Kumis, or airag, is a drink native to Mongolia traditionally made from fermented horse milk, and it's been consumed for centuries. It's made by fermenting mare's milk over the course of a day or two, intermittently churning the milk throughout the fermentation process. The final product has a slightly sour taste, and it's a little bit alcoholic, but only around 2%.Narrator: Yaks are domestic to the Himalayan region, providing many amenities such as wool, meat, and of course milk. Yak milk has a higher fat and protein content than that of cows. This is one of the reasons why yak butter is highly sought after in some circles. Because yaks produce more milk in the summer than the winter, yak milk is often turned into butter or cheese in order to preserve it for later. One of those cheeses is chhurpi, which comes in soft or extremely hard variants.Narrator: Goat milk is a staple of French cuisine, contributing to many of the wide variety of cheeses produced in France. Goat milk is also used to make soap, which can be a gentle cleanser that keeps skin moisturized by not stripping it of natural fats. Goat milk is also a good source of vitamin A, which is known to preserve eyesight, support organ function, and even help the immune system.Narrator: Reindeer milk is very rare, and only a few places in Scandinavia actually milk reindeer. Reindeer milk has a shocking 20% fat content, compared to the average 3.5% for cows, but that fat content gives the milk a very rich and creamy taste. Reindeer can be milked for only about 1 1/2 cups per day. Reindeer milk can be turned into leipäjuusto, a traditional hard cheese from Finland with a milky taste. Sometimes in Sweden, it's put into cups of coffee.Narrator: Greece is known for its dairy products, such as sheep's milk. Sheep's milk is extremely high in fat content and has a high level of solids, which makes it ideal for cheesemaking. Sheep's milk tastes rich and buttery and has a less sharp aftertaste than cow's milk. One of the most common cheeses made from sheep's milk is feta. Per Bloomberg, the slide could mean Fonterra, the world's biggest dairy exporter based in New Zealand, will slash payments to its suppliers this year. Chinese appetite for dairy products, which plays a key role in setting the price of dairy markets globally, has been slipping this year as the world's second-biggest economy falters.Data shows that Chinese factories are producing less, while retail sales have slowed dramatically. Economic growth for the three months to June 30 also badly missed economists' expectations of 7.3%, rising just 6.3%. It's clear that Beijing's hopes for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-crash-inflation-deflation-trade-exports-growth-global-recession-2023-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smooth post-pandemic recovery</a> have missed the mark. The Kerala Co-operative <keyword id="170372" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="milk-marketing-federation" source="Orion">Milk Marketing Federation</keyword>, or <keyword id="251235" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="milma" source="Orion">Milma</keyword>, on Thursday announced its decision to hike prices of milk by Rs 6 per litre which will come into effect from December 1. Currently, the cost of a litre of milk in the state is Rs 46. The price hike comes three years after Milma had announced an increase of Rs 4 per litre in 2019. "That time, 83.75 per cent (Rs 3.35) of the additional amount went to the farmers. That proportion will continue this time which means Rs 5.025 of the Rs 6 will go to the farmer," said Chairman of the Federation, K.S. <keyword id="9128" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mani" source="Orion">Mani</keyword>. The latest decision comes after a Milma-appointed panel comprising experts from the state's veterinary and agriculture universities conducted a study on expenses incurred by dairy farmers. In its interim report submitted last week, the committee said that the farmers suffer an estimated loss of Rs 8.57 per litre of milk. Subsequently, the Milma Director Board convened a meeting and found that a price hike was inevitable, the Chairman said. "Though Milma is authorised to increase the price, the Board's decision was discussed with the state government and a suitable hike was finalised," he added. Along with a fresh hike in procurement prices, the milk cooperatives and distributors will each get 5.75 per cent of the new hiked amount, while 0.75 per cent of the amount will go to the Dairy Farmers Welfare Fund Board. Milma will get 3.50 per cent of the increased amount even as 0.50 per cent has been earmarked for the <keyword id="15606825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="plastic-elimination-fund" source="Orion">Plastic Elimination Fund</keyword>. Besides the rise in the cooperative federation's milk procurement prices, the government has been giving various subsidies to the farmers. The present hike in the milk procurement price will benefit the milk producers, wooing more of them to join the dairy sector, Mani said. Breast milk contains a natural ingredient that prevents your body from lactating. That's why it's important to empty your breasts of milk at each feeding because it gives your body the green light to produce more milk. </li><li>Check with a lactation consultant to make sure your baby's latch is good. When your baby suckles, your body releases the hormone, oxytocin, which triggers your breasts to release the milk. But if your baby isn't latching on and suckling correctly, it might leave too much leftover milk in your breasts, which can prevent you from producing more for the next feeding. </li><li>Ensure that your pumping technique is correct. This will make sure you empty your breasts, giving your body the green light to make more.</li></ul>Some women use herbs like fenugreek, goat's rue, milk thistle, alfalfa, and blessed thistle helpful to increase supply. In general, the side effects are minimal, but there is also limited evidence for how effective they truly are. Therefore, talk to your doctor or a lactation specialist before taking any supplements. Prescription medications may also help increase milk supply, but Madden says these should only be considered if all other methods failed. Both <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5828930/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">domperidone and metoclopramide</a> are prescribed for other conditions, but one of the side effects is an increase in milk supply.
