Mumbai, In a setback for Congress in Mumbai ahead of Lok Sabha polls, former Union minister <keyword id="85636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="milind-deora" source="Orion">Milind Deora</keyword> on Sunday quit the party "to walk the path of development" and joined the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, ending a "55 years old association" of the Deora family with the Grand Old Party. With Deora resigning just before the start of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, the Congress alleged that the timing of the announcement of his departure from the party was determined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for headline management to counter the yatra, and asserted that it would have no impact. The former Mumbai South MP announced his decision to resign from the primary membership of the party on social media platform X in the morning hours on Sunday. "Today marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in my political journey. I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of the Congress, ending my family's 55-year relationship with the party. I am grateful to all leaders, colleagues and karyakartas for their unwavering support over the years," Deora stated. He later went to Siddhivinayak Temple in Prabhadevi to offer prayers. In the afternoon, Deora joined the Shiv Sena in the presence of Eknath Shinde in a function at Varsha, the official residence of the chief minister. Earlier in the day, when Deora stepped out of his residence 'Ramalayam' in south Mumbai, he told reporters that he was "going to walk on the path of development". Deora, who was recently appointed the joint treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, had expressed disapproval at the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) staking a claim to the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency which he had represented in the past. The undivided Shiv Sena's Arvind Sawant, now with the Thackeray faction, had defeated Deora in the 2014 and 2019 general elections. Deora was also the head of the Mumbai Congress at one time. He is the son of party stalwart late Murli Deora. After Deora announced his resignation on X, Mumbai Congress president <keyword id="20188187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="varsha-gaikwad" source="keywords">Varsha Gaikwad</keyword> said it was unfortunate that he had quit the party on the day when the Rahul Gandhi-led 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' commences from Manipur. Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole called it a ploy by the Bharatiya Janata Party to divert the attention from the Yatra and mocked Deora as a "twice defeated candidate". Former chief minister Ashok Chavan said Deora wanted to contest from the Mumbai South constituency but the (Maha Vikas Aghadi) alliance's understanding is that the sitting MP must not be disturbed. "The BJP was spreading rumours that the Congress will split. Now the BJP and its allies are taking along with them a twice-defeated candidate to divert attention from the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. This attempt will not be successful," Patole said. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, however, said there would be no compromise on the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat. "Arvind Sawant is a two-time MP (of Shiv Sena-UBT). What is wrong with him contesting again? There will be no compromise on this," Raut asserted. In a swipe at BJP, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MP <keyword id="20083020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supriya-sule" source="keywords">Supriya Sule</keyword> asked if the saffron party had no talent of its own. Asked about Deora's resignation, Sule said the BJP and its allies were becoming the Congress, an apparent reference to leaders from the grand old party switching allegiance to the ruling side.

Mukesh Ambani, the country’s richest man and top businessman, who is also a South Mumbai resident had batted for him this time by appealing to Mumbai South's elite voters. “I believe Milind has in-depth knowledge of social, economic and cultural ecosystem of their South Mumbai constituency,” Ambani said in a video. The chairman of the third largest bank, Uday Kotak too batted for Deora. But this fell short of the Sena-BJP alliance which swept the state. Saffron Mumbai All of Mumbai's constituencies went the Saffron way as Poonam Mahajan of BJP won over Priya Dutt yet again in Mumbai North Central. The sitting MP of Mumbai North, Gopal Shetty also defeated Congress' Urmila Matondar by a margin of over 4.6 lakh votes. Sena's Gajanan Kirtikar and Rahul Ramesh Shewale won Mumbai North West and Mumbai South Central respectively. BJP's Manoj Kotak won the Mumbai North East seat. Lost Hopes This election brought a new hope for Milind Deora, a union minister in the last UPA government, who was a victim of Modi wave. This Congress candidate had hoped to reclaim his Mumbai South seat back from Arvind Sawant, the Shiv Sena candidate, who fought off the upper crest voters who have been bringing in their own to the fold, for decades now. Mumbai North Central also had interesting candidates. Poonam Mahajan, the daughter of late Telecom Minister Pramod Mahajan, contested against Congress’ Priya Dutt, the daughter of the legendary Sunil Dutt. Like Deora, Dutt too had to concede her sitting seat to Mahajan, after Modi wave washed away her seat prospects to this first-timer, by a massive 1.86 lakh vote margin. Dutt’s loss in Mumbai North Central was one of Congress’ major disappointments for the election. Star power Priya’s brother Sanjay Dutt whose image is now wiped squeaky clean, thanks to his biopic Sanju, had stepped in to campaign for his sister. This election, Congress employed enough star power to battle the larger-than-life Modi image. Actress turned politician Urmila Matondkar has braved many controversies to get Congress elected from Mumbai North, and take down BJP’s sitting MP Gopal Shetty. However, BJP had its share of troubles as well. They had to drop the sitting MP Kirit Somaiya from their candidate list after a controversial statement made on Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray. They fielded Manoj Kotak for the Mumbai North East seat after hotheaded Sena party members threatened to campaign against them if Somaiya came to power. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has fielded only a single candidate from Mumbai North East, Sanjay Patil, who had lost to Somaiya last time. Congress’ Sanjay Nirupam from Mumbai North West had contested against the sitting MP, Gajanan Kirtikar of Shiv Sena, to whom he conceded defeat to, last time. Eknath Gaikwad of Congress battled out Shiv Sena’a Rahul Shewale for the Mumbai South Central seat, in the city which has six Lok Sabha seats to offer.

In Balasore, a city in the state of Odisha, one can find around 800 volunteers of <keyword id="1966391" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharat-Gyan-Vigyan-Samiti">Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti</keyword>, a nonprofits voluntary outfit, going from door to door. They are busy collecting village-level data, which is being entered into an app on tablets before being centrally collated. 
 
These volunteers are collecting data on a wide range of subjects -schools, aanganwadi centres, health facilities, Panchayati Raj institutions, roads, transport, electrification and agriculture in the constituency of lawmaker <keyword id="3229208" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="RK-Jena">RK Jena</keyword>. 
 This data will be analysed by a not-for-profit development organisation called <keyword id="3229209" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Swaniti-Initiative">Swaniti Initiative</keyword>, which will then use self-created tools to draft a development plan for the sitting MP. 
 
There has been an increasing inclination towards using big data and analytics to strengthen the process of decision-making and improve governance at national, state and constituency levels.

Talking of states, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Odisha are at the forefront of this data revolution. 
This revolution has stemmed from PM Modi's push to use the latest tools for improving governance, as told by Rwitwika Bhattacharya, founder of Swaniti Initiative, to ET. 
 
"With the recent focus of the government, a large shift has been towards digital governance, which is data-driven... a movement away from the pen and paper model," said Bhattacharya. 
 
Swaniti's present team includes graduates from Harvard and Stanford, along with IITs and IIMs. 
 The techniques and tools used for this data revolution include social media analysis, predictive algorithms, <keyword id="771372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="data-analytics">data analytics</keyword> and forecasting based on primary data. 
 
"In the old days, candidates would hire pollsters to measure responses from electorates. Today, it can happen easily with big data," said Deora. "It is an effective way of reducing gaps between politicians and people."

Equinet, as a structure and concept with greater objectives, is the European Network of Specialised National Equality Bodies. This structure co-ordinates and facilitates information exchange among fair bodies in the European Union, to counteract discrimination across a wide range of key areas including age, sexual orientation, gender and a host of other aspects.

	But the Equinet India proposes to implement, goes much beyond counteracting discrimination. This Equinet reaches the realms of Internet safety, data protection and privacy of users across the spectrum. <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> will place this suggestion at a meeting, proposed to be held at <st1:country-region w:st="on">Brazil</st1:country-region>’s <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on"><keyword id="9629" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sao-Paulo">Sao Paulo</keyword></st1:city></st1:place></st1:country-region> on April 23 at the ‘NETMundial’ event where representatives from more than 180 countries will be present.

	It is well expected that <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> will side with <st1:country-region w:st="on">Brazil</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Russia</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">South Africa</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on">Iran</st1:country-region> to get the point across that the time has come to end the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">US</st1:place></st1:country-region> dominance over the Internet. This conference, which is also known as the ‘Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Governance,’ was led by <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Brazil</st1:place></st1:country-region>, which had expressed its displeasure over the American snooping activities in no uncertain words.

	In its interpretation of what the Internet should turn out to be, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region> will press for a ‘multilateral, transparent, democratic and representative…’ Internet and security programmes, which need to be ‘internationalised’ in the sense that access to security measures should be distributed equally among stakeholders.

	<o:p></o:p>

	<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region> will also elaborate on how the new cyber jurisprudence should be evolved, bringing down all political boundaries and aiming to deliver cyber justice in real time. For this, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region> feels that all stakeholders need to facilitate the transfer of Information Technology and capacity building to developing nations in order to help them take measures to improve cyber security, develop technical skills and enact legislation, strategies and regulatory frameworks to fulfil their responsibilities.

 Even the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> is aware that the country is home to the world’s biggest tech force that can make it happen. In its 12th Five Year Plan in 2012-17, the government has also allocated Rs 500 crore towards strengthening cyber security that will cover a number of key areas such as surveillance, cyber crime investigation and forensics.

Former <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="congress" source="keywords">Congress</keyword> MLC Amar Rajurkar, who resigned from the party on Monday, also joined the BJP today. Asserting to make a new change in his 38-year political career <keyword id="20559325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chavan" source="keywords">Chavan</keyword> said, "Today, I am making a new change in my 38 years of politics by joining BJP. To join the country's development journey under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi." "I will ensure that the BJP gets the full benefit of my experience and understanding in politics. After leaving Congress, some people criticized me, some people also supported me, some people also made different comments, but I would like to say once that I will take all these things together and move forward positively. Today I have given my form to become BJP member which has been accepted by Bawankule ji," he added. "Maharashtra politics has its own color, in which we also respect our opponents. When Devendra Fadnavis was the leader of the opposition and we were in power, we used to cooperate with each other positively and even today we do positive work to take the state and the country forward," The former CM said that he is ready to accept any post the party gives adding that he has not demanded anything. "I will accept whatever role the party gives me. I have not made any demand for any role or post from the party. I will accept whatever the party has decided for me," Chavan said. "The decision I have taken is my personal decision and I am just the beginning, so at the moment I am not saying much on this subject, I am ready to fulfill whatever responsibility will be given to me positively, that's all I would like to say," he added. According to sources, Ashok Chavan is likely to be BJP's Rajya Sabha candidate from Maharashtra putting Congress in a tight spot. Ashok Chavan resgined from the primary membership of the Congress party on Monday. Chavan submitted his resignation to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole. "I have resigned from the Assembly membership as an MLA. I have given my resignation to the Speaker. I have resigned from the Congress Working Committee and the Congress primary membership," Chavan told reporters after resigning from Congress on Monday. Ashok Chavan was the Vice President and General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress Committee from 1986 to 1995. He served the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for three terms, starting in 1999 and ending in May 2014. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra State from December 8, 2008, to November 9, 2010. On November 9, 2010, the Congress Party asked him to resign from office over corruption allegations relating to the Adarsh Housing Society scam. In the 2014 general elections, Chavan was elected from the Nanded constituency but lost the seat in 2019 Pratap Patil Chikhalikar of the BJP. He is the third big name to desert the Congress ship in Maharashtra. First to go was former South Mumbai MP Milind Deora, followed by former MLA Baba Siddique. (ANI)

Did not demand any role or post, says Ashok Chavan as he joins BJP

New Delhi, Apr 22 () Facebook's Rs 43,574 crore-investment in Jio Platforms earned accolades from industry leaders on Wednesday, even as some internet activists raised privacy concerns. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said the investment is strong signal of India's economic importance and further projects the country as the centre for new growth post the coronavirus crisis. "Jio's deal with Facebook is good not just for the two of them. Coming as it does during the virus-crisis, it is a strong signal of India's economic importance post the crisis. It strengthens hypotheses that the world will pivot to India as a new growth epicentre. Bravo Mukesh!" Mahindra said in a tweet. Facebook announced an investment of USD 5.7 billion (Rs 43,574 crore) to buy 9.99 per cent stake in the firm that houses Ambani's telecom arm Jio, as the social media giant looks to expand presence in its largest market in terms of subscriber base. The deal values Jio Platforms at Rs 4.62 lakh crore pre-money enterprise value (USD 65.95 billion, assuming a conversion rate of Rs 70 to a US dollar). This is the largest investment for a minority stake by a technology company anywhere in the world and the largest FDI in the technology sector in India. The investment values Jio Platforms amongst the top five listed companies in India by market capitalization, within just three and a half years of launch of commercial services. Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail and WhatsApp have also entered into a commercial partnership agreement to further accelerate Reliance Retail's new commerce business on the JioMart platform using WhatsApp. Digial payments firm Paytm's founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma tweeted, "This is extraordinary at so many levels. #GODStatus." JioMart's business model will compete with Paytm services. WhatsApp has applied for a digital payment licence to facilitate UPI-based transactions. However, it is yet to receive permit due to security issues flagged by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Former IT and telecom minister Milind Deora said the deal is a respite in the present scenario. "Welcome respite from our daily doom &amp; gloom. Mukesh Ambani always envisioned @reliancejio as a global internet company, not merely an Indian telco. As we consume more &amp; more data, Jio's partnership with @Facebook could enable India to become a world leader in AI innovation," Deora tweeted. However, Save The Internet co-founder Nikhil Pahwa said that people need to be watchful about the deal. "Jio is much more powerful than in 2015. FB (Facebook) remains the same. Industry leaders applaud Facebook-Jio deal; say India to be growth epicentre post COVID crisis

<ul><li>The Supreme Court directed the 10 rebellious Congress MLAs to speak to <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> assembly speaker at 6 pm yesterday. </li><li>As many as 16 MLAs — including 6 from <keyword id="123462" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Dal">Janata Dal</keyword> (JD) — had offered resignation to the speaker who didn't accept the resignations. </li><li>The MLAs accused assembly speaker Ramesh Kumar for not accepting their resignation.</li></ul>Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said that he is ready for a trust vote in Assembly, as the crisis over his government deepens. As many as 10 MLAs from the Congress resigned from the government on July 1 which weakened the Congress and Janata Dal (S) coalition government. The MLAs had stayed holed up in <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> for days since the mass resignations as the crisis to Mumbai. A few silver lines of resolution came on Thursday after the Supreme Court directed the dissenting MLAs to appear before the Assembly on Thursday evening. The Apex court had also asked the Karnataka Police to provide protection to the MLAs — Pratap Gouda Patil, Ramesh Jarkhiholi, Byrati Basavaraj, BC Patil, ST Somashekar, Arbail Sivaram Hebbar, Mahesh Kumathalli, K Gopalaiah, HD Vishwanath and Narayan Gowda. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) had also registered a complaint against the rebel MLAs for not abiding by the party rules and staying illegally at a hotel in Mumbai. The situation also heated up when Congress party leaders like Milind Deora and Shikumar were stopped from entering the hotel premises. Later, a Section 144 which bans the assembly of more than four people, was also imposed on Wednesday in Powai area where the rebel MPs were staying. The MLAs had accused that the Speaker Ramesh Kumar was not accepting their resignations, even when they were in accordance with the Indian constitution. As many as 16 MLAs — including 6 from <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/karnataka-crisis-sc-asks-rebel-mlas-to-appear-before-speaker-at-6pm/articleshow/70169817.cms">Janata Dal (JD)</a> — too had tendered resignations. There have been instances where such impasses have taken months to be resolved. Whatever the pressure, I am not going to move an inch away from the law and procedure," Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar told <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/karnataka-political-crisis-live-updates-july-11-2019/article28396367.ece">The Hindu</a>. “We are now 15 MLAs who want to resign but there is no formal acceptance by Speaker. Idea is not to defect, but resign so that we can go back to public and contest,” said Mukul Rohatagi, former Attorney General appealed to the bench on behalf of the resigned MLAs to a Supreme Court bench which includes Chief Justice <keyword id="245445" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranjan-Gogoi">Ranjan Gogoi</keyword>.

However, it is now known that leaders from Kyrgyzstan and Mauritius will be attending the event. The swearing in ceremony is striving to make Modi’s guests from his constituency in Varanasi feel special. A special gallery called ‘Kashi Sankul’ is being set-up to accommodate 250 special guests from Uttar Pradesh. The event however is not without its controversies. The winning party BJP invited the families of those killed in the West Bengal political violence which erupted just before the last phase of polling. This move angered Mamata Banerjee the chief minister of the state and the head of Trinamool Congress, who declined an invitation to the attend the ceremony. BJP’s ally in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena slammed Banerjee for this move, in an editorial published in its mouthpiece Saamna. Narendra Modi Oath Taking Ceremony Live Updates:  Amit Shah enters Narendra Modi’s cabinet; Smriti Irani welcomed with loud cheers

Senior <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> leader and former Union minister <keyword id="45314" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Murli-Deora">Murli Deora</keyword> passed away early this morning. He was not keeping well for quite sometime. 
 Commemorating the loss, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> tweeted, “A dedicated leader, Shri Murli Deora’s warm nature made him popular across party lines. News of his demise is saddening. My deepest condolences to Milind Deora and his family. " 
 "One of the most amiable persons I knew. He had friends across Party Line. We shall forever miss him. Our condolences to the family," tweeted senior Congress leader <keyword id="43786" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digvijay-Singh">Digvijay Singh</keyword>. 
 
Today, his body would be kept in Congress office in Mumbai, where people can pay their last respect from noon to 2:00 pm. Afterwards, his last rites would be performed at Chandanwadi Sonapur in Mumbai. 
 
Deora was 77 and is survived by his wife and two sons. The political leader started his political career by contesting the civic elections in Mumbai in 1975. He also served as the mayor of Mumbai from 1977 to 1978. He was the minister of petroleum and natural gas during the UPA rule. At present, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha.
