<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14349497" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="miki-sudo" source="Orion">Miki Sudo</keyword> has won the <keyword id="11568583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest" source="Orion">Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest</keyword> seven times, and plans to reclaim her title.</li><li>The competitive eater, who took last year off to have a baby, wants to break her own record.</li></ul><p>When it comes to competitive eating, Miki Sudo is no underdog.</p><p>The 36-year-old, ranked as <a href="https://majorleagueeating.com/eaters/222">the world's number-one female eater</a>, is ready to reclaim her title at this year's <a href="https://nathansfranks.sfdbrands.com/en-us/promotions/hot-dog-eating-contest/">Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest </a>after she sat out last year with a bun in the oven: her first child, Max, born on July 8, 2021.</p><p>While her unprecedented <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNStatsInfo/status/1279452972926283781?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1279452972926283781%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.courant.com%2Fsports%2Fhc-sp-july-4-nathans-famous-hot-dog-nick-wehry-miki-sudo-20210704-dfa6u7unnngmnke4ppgphwj2ru-story.html">seven-year winning streak</a> — from 2014 through 2020 — was interrupted last summer, Sudo said she plans to come out top dog upon her anticipated return to what she calls "the Super Bowl of competitive eating."</p><p>"There's no second place," Sudo told Insider during a break from gym training in Tampa. She has her eye on the prized Mustard Belt — and $20,000 purse — at the beloved Coney Island competition, which is televised on ESPN and even became <a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/general/hot-dog-eating-contest-legal-us-betting">legal to bet on</a> in three states last year.</p><p>Sudo, who participates in a dozen or so professional eating competitions a year, has a lofty goal for this year's contest: eating 50 dogs, including the buns, in 10 minutes. She nabbed her first Mustard Belt in 2014 with 34 <keyword id="12074281" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hot-dogs" source="Orion">hot dogs</keyword>, and secured her last title in 2020 by downing 48.5. </p><div type="image" title="Miki Sudo, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest champ, poses with her Mustard Belt after her 2020 win." height="2978" width="3970" msid="92619434" hostid="261" sizebytes="618730"></div><p>To reclaim her title, she'll have to overcome at least one notable setback: a wrist injury on her left hand, which she uses to dunk the dogs into buckets of water — a <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/04/us/nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest-strategies-trnd/index.html">popular technique</a> among eating elites. "I only dunk with my left hand," she said. "Now, I'll have to do that with my right too."</p><p>But she's not fazed; despite her injury, Sudo still placed second in an <a href="https://www.lubbockonline.com/story/sports/2022/06/11/major-league-eating-rankings-outlaw-egg-rolls-contest-lubbock-tx/7560167001/">egg-roll eating championship</a> in Lubbock, Texas in June.</p><h2>Rebounding from pregnancy, Sudo doesn't see herself as 'a girl competing in a man's sport'</h2><p>Even after gaining 40 pounds during her <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/foods-to-avoid-during-pregnancy">pregnancy</a> and undergoing a C-section, Sudo got back into fighting — or eating — shape quickly. "If anything, [having a baby] stretched me out more," she said. "That's probably a good thing."</p><p>To <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-happens-to-the-bodies-of-competitive-eaters-2017-7">prepare her body</a> for a return to competition, she stuck to lean proteins, fresh produce and lots of hydration. She also hits an "old-school" bodybuilding gym several times a week to lift weights with her husband, bodybuilder and competitive eater <a href="https://majorleagueeating.com/eaters/264">Nick Wehry</a>.</p><p>"I like getting used to the heat, being at a healthy weight, getting my diet dialed in — just being as perfectly disciplined as possible," she said.</p><p>Sudo regularly goes toe-to-toe with the world's most famous eaters, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-happens-to-joey-chestnuts-body-after-eating-hot-dogs-2021-7">Joey Chestnut</a>, the popular world number-one competitive eater.</p><p>Sudo has upset Chestnut, the sport's most visible personality, in multiple contests over the years, from her surprise win in one of her first competitions, the <a href="https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20130608/north-center/competitive-eating-champ-joey-chestnut-upset-by-miki-sudo-at-ribmania/">2013 RibMania showdown</a>, to last September's National Chicken Wing Festival, when <a href="https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/miki-sudo-eats-246-wings-edging-out-joey-chestnut-at-national-buffalo-wing-eating-championship/">she downed 246 wings</a> to Chestnut's 244 in 12 minutes. (It was her first competition after giving birth; she also edged out her husband.)</p><p>"I don't see myself as a girl competing in a men's sport," said the five-foot-seven, 135-pound Sudo. "I don't feel like I have any more to prove as a woman ... As she sat out pregnant last year, "neither of the women in line to win worked any harder," she said of her closest rivals, Sarah Rodriguez and last year's Nathan's winner, Michelle Lesco, who scarfed a respectable, but far distant 30.75 hot dogs. "I'm like, 'This throne is vacant. The belt is for the taking.'"</p><p>Maybe she's just hungrier than the competition. </p><p>"If I'm going to do competitive eating, I'm not going to be a mediocre competitive eater," she said. "The first year, at Nathan's especially, I felt like I had to prove to people that I belonged there," she said.</p><p>While the rest of the pack trains around the clock, she credits at least some of her gastronomic acrobatics to nature. "I've realized I have a genetic predisposition and advantage to this," she said. "I didn't get to my capacity through bashing my head against the wall training. There's something inside of me."</p><p>Sudo said she lives a normal life and hardly gets recognized. "I think it's because I have a full face of makeup on when I'm on TV," she said. "Even when I'm eating hot dogs, I typically have fake eyelashes on. If you're going to be scarfing down hot dogs, you might as well try to look good while doing it."</p><p>Max, who's about to turn one, is a chip off the old block. "He eats constantly — he tends to like all foods," Sudo said, noting that he recently grabbed a chicken avocado salad doused in habanero vinegar and snacked on it without flinching.</p><p>While she earns a "modest living" from competitive eating and has no plans to slow down on the circuit, Sudo is working to expand her career next year, starting a program to become a dental hygienist. She has another title in mind as well: "Maybe the next chapter is ESPN guest commentator," she said. </p>

The 37-year-old ate 76 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes - breaking his previous <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happens-to-the-bodies-of-competitive-eaters-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 record of 75 hot dogs</a>. </p><p>Geoffrey Esper came in second place with 50 hot dogs and buns, while third-place winner Nick Wehry ate 44 franks, <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/general/news/nathans-hot-dog-eating-contest-2021-results-joey-chestnut-sets-new-world-record-wins-14th-title/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS Sports</a> reported.</p><p>The competition typically occurs outside of Nathan's flagship eatery in <keyword id="71339" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brooklyn">Brooklyn</keyword>'s <keyword id="1345605" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Coney-Island">Coney Island</keyword>, but the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/joey-chestnut-michelle-lesco-nathans-famous-c992ddcd43833c92ad63291e9b483662" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a> reported that the coronavirus pandemic pushed the event into a nearby minor league baseball stadium.</p><p>In 2020, the event was held <a href="https://www.insider.com/coney-island-hot-dog-contest-put-plastic-dividers-between-contestants-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indoors</a> and without an in-person audience due to the ongoing pandemic. Social distancing was enforced, and competitors were divided by plastic dividers.</p><p>Chestnut told <a href="https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/31760938/joey-chestnut-eats-world-record-76-hot-dogs-win-nathan-famous-fourth-july-hot-dog-eating-contest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESPN</a> that the new victory "just felt good."</p><p>"Even if I was uncomfortable, having everybody cheer me and push me, it made me feel good," Chestnut said.</p><p>Michelle Lesco won the title on the women's half by eating 30 ¾ hot dogs and buns. Sarah Rodriguez came in second place with 24 franks and Larell Marie Mele with 18 ¾. </p><p>ESPN reported that the reigning women's champion and record holder, Miki Sudo, skipped this year's event because she's expecting a baby in a few weeks with fellow contestant Nick Wehry. </p>

Miki Sudo won the women's competition, eating 38.5 hot dogs in the 10 minute period. </span></p><p>However, according a 2007 study published in The Journal of Roentgenology, eating competitions can be damaging to the human body.  <span style="font-weight: 400;">This </span><a href="http://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.07.2342"><span style="font-weight: 400;">study compared the body of Tim Janus</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a competitive speed eating champion who could consume 36 hot dogs in 10 minutes, to a non-competitive eater with a healthy appetite. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Each man was given </span><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertglatter/2014/07/06/competitive-eating-is-it-dangerous/#32b30dbb8410"><span style="font-weight: 400;">12 minutes to chow down</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on as many hot dogs as they could. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">During this competition, Janus' stomach stretched and distended, but it didn't contract at all. The normal eater's stomach wasn't able to stretch as much, but it did contract. <p>Seventeen men and 13 women are competing to see how many beef franks they can down in 10 minutes at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at the cheesy Brooklyn seaside resort on Friday.</p>
<p>Come rain or shine -- and thunderstorms are predicted overnight -- organizers insist the contest will be held outdoors and watched by millions more when it broadcasts live on ESPN2.</p>
<p>Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas, 46, the reigning champion who chomped down 45 dogs in 2012 and 36.75 last year, faces a major threat from would-be usurper Miki Sudo, 28.</p>
<p>"I faced Sonya 10 times over the last year and a half, and beat her every single time," Las Vegas's Sudo told a New York press conference on Thursday.</p>
<p>"I hope to win, and (to) set a new record would be great!"</p>
<p>Thomas, a skinny Korean-American who weighs 100 pounds (45 kilos), doesn't just have one world record, she has 23.</p>
<p>She is the champion of baked beans (8.42 pounds in two minutes 47 seconds); cheesecake (11 pounds in nine minutes); lobster (44 in 12 minutes) and oysters (564 in eight minutes), according to Major League Eating</p>
<p>But her favorite food? Hard-boiled eggs. She can eat 92 in eight minutes.</p>
<p>On the men's side, California's Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, 30, has been reigning champion for seven consecutive years.</p>
<p>Last year he beat his own record by eating 69 dogs, but he faces stiff competition from the much smaller Matt Stonie.</p>
<p>"I know I can beat him," said Stonie.</p>
<p>If that's the case, Chestnut can console himself with his other 31 world records, including in ice cream (15 pints of vanilla in six minutes); bratwurst sausages (70 in 10 minutes); and hard-boiled eggs (141 in eight minutes).</p>
<p>To get the dogs down, each contestant has certain tricks, but most soak the bread in water and eat the meat separately.</p>
<p>Anyone who vomits is disqualified.</p>
<p>Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs says the Independence Day contest has been running since 1916 -- when the winner consumed 13 hot dogs.</p>
