As of <a target="_blank" href="https://investor.costco.com/news/news-details/2023/Costco-Wholesale-Corporation-Reports-September-Sales-Results/default.aspx">September</a>, the discount retailer had 591 in the US and Puerto Rico and 107 in Canada, with less than 200 in its other markets, including just 29 stores in the UK.Though Costco has adapted its product assortment to the UK market, its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-to-shop-at-costco-in-us-uk-2021-12">UK and US stores are very similar</a> and the aisles of the London store I visited showed a strong American influence.I definitely saw a bigger <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-food-aisles-uk-grocers-supermarkets-tesco-sainsburys-store-shop-2022-2">range of US brands</a> than I'm used to seeing at British retailers like Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Asda. Some of their stores have small sections dedicated solely to American food, which sell harder-to-find products, like Twinkies and Pop-Tarts – but generally at dramatically hiked-up prices.<div type="image" title="Boxes of Welch's Fruit Snacks on sale at Costco in London" height="3024" width="4032" msid="105150659" hostid="261" sizebytes="993298"></div><h2>Costco is an American snack haven</h2>Costco sells a huge range of American snacks and candy in particular, perhaps because some of these items are easily recognizable from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.timeout.com/london/shopping/why-is-central-london-suddenly-full-of-american-sweetshops">popular culture</a> like TV shows and films. Videos of people trying American snacks and candy for the first time are also common on YouTube and TikTok.Candy brands I saw at Costco included Red Vines licorice, Mike and Ike candy, and Welch's Fruit Snacks. The latter cost £16.78 (about $20) for a box of 80 individual portion-sized bags at the store I visited.Snacks on sale at Costco include pretzels from the San Francisco Pretzel Company, popcorn from Angie's Boomchickapop, lentil chips from the Daily Crave, and Krusteaz's instant pancake mix.Costco's website charges £8.99 (about $11) for what it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.costco.co.uk/Grocery-Household/Grocery-Delivery/Krusteaz-Buttermilk-Complete-Pancake-Mix-453kg/p/87934">says</a> is enough of the Krusteaz mix to make up to 240 four-inch pancakes, which is only $1 more than its <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=3d0a17c1b50850a1ae135033a004706f7a4d8edff9a45d4b73af786c45817d98&amp;postID=653a75fbd5adb6e8ec7cc375&amp;postSlug=costco-uk-has-american-brands-kraft-mac-cheese-cheetos-2023-11&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.costco.com%2Fkrusteaz%2C-complete-buttermilk-pancake-mix%2C-10-lbs.product.100381610.html">US website</a> charges.<div type="image" title="Jars of Smucker's Goober on sale at Costco in London" height="3468" width="4624" msid="105150660" hostid="261" sizebytes="1718244"></div>I also saw Smucker's Goober spread, San Francisco Bay Coffee, and Hershey's chocolate syrup.There were some cereals made by American candy brands, too, like Oreo O's and Reese's Puffs. While I have seen these on sale in the UK before, they're usually significantly more expensive than other brands. A five-pack of Kraft Macaroni &amp; Cheese Dinner costs £11.19 (around $2.75 per box) on the UK website, whereas on its US website, Costco charges $18.99 for 18 boxes of around the same weight – or just over $1 per box.<h2>Brits can still get their tea fix</h2>There were, however, plenty of British products on sale, showing how it had adapted its assortment to UK shoppers.I spotted a 480-bag pack of Yorkshire Tea – my favorite brand – as well as a 1,100-bag pack of Tetley Tea for £16.49 ($20.20) in-store.And though Kraft-Heinz is an American company, Heinz Beanz are synonymous with British cuisine.Regular-sized cans weigh in at 415 grams (14.6 ounce), but at Costco store in South Croydon, you could buy a pack of six 2.62-kilogram cans (nearly six pounds each) for £26.79 (about $33).<div type="image" title="Blocks of cheese at Costco; Pork belly at Costco" height="1080" width="1440" msid="105150665" hostid="261" sizebytes="196092"></div><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aldi-us-vs-uk-store-review-photos-prices-brands-comparison-2022-2#both-the-store-design-and-product-packaging-featured-a-lot-of-union-jacks-and-honed-in-on-how-many-of-the-items-were-british--30">Like many supermarkets in the UK</a>, Costco was keen to point out the local origins of some of its own-brand Kirkland Signature produce as consumers pay more attention to food miles and supporting domestic agriculture.Costco's cheddar cheese was emblazoned with Union Jacks, while some pork products were labeled as "British pork." In <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/costco-kyoto-japan-differences-see-inside-photos-2023-7#one-big-thing-that-i-noticed-was-a-lot-of-the-meats-were-us-meats-12">Japan</a>, in comparison, Costco labels some of its meats as USDA Choice.The UK food court, like in the US, was ridiculously cheap, but the menu was much more limited and some items had been swapped out to suit British tastes, such as adding cottage pies made with Aberdeen Angus and baked potatoes with baked beans.

"There is no reason for panic or alarm," the email read, according to CNN.Ike's Eatery, one of the cafeterias on the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is across West Executive Avenue from the West Wing, was temporarily closed <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/white-house-executive-office-cafeteria-closed-after-positive-coronavirus-test-n1234662">NBC News</a> reported. CNN also reported that the cafeteria in the New Executive Office Building was also temporarily closed. It's unclear how long the cafeterias will stay closed, but some staffers told NBC <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">News</keyword> that it's likely that they'll be closed for two weeks. The cafeteria in the EEOB is run by a contractor. CNN reported that while there's a cafeteria run by the US Navy in the West Wing, dozens of staffers like to go to Ike's Eatery in EEOB. The General Services Administration, which maintains the EEOB, did not tell NBC News how many staffers may have been exposed. CNN reported that email sent to staffers said contact tracing was conducted, and no executive office workers need to quarantine. "The White House Medical Unit has done contact tracing and determined that the risk of retransmission is low," a GSA spokesperson told NBC News. Business Insider could not immediately reach the GSA for comment.Several people tied to the White House have previously tested positive for the coronavirus. They're really irreplaceable at Easter, but also at the other seasons.Narrator: From their Easter bunnies to Halloween ghosts, Peeps are a household name.Malcolm: Sugar, corn syrup, and gelatin. How can something so simple be so delicious?Narrator: Every year, people compete nationwide to make the best dioramas, they've stuffed themselves in the "100 Peeps challenge," and even popped them in the microwave to see if they'll explode.And Easter accounts for 70% of Peeps' annual sales.We visited Just Born's Pennsylvania factory to see how these iconic treats come to life.Sam Born started the company in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. Born was a candymaker by trade and earned a name for himself through his confectionary innovations.He created the technology to make sprinkles and invented a machine that inserted the sticks into lollipops, which actually earned him the keys to the city of San Francisco in 1916.After introducing popular candies like Mike and Ikes and Hot Tamales, he bought the Rodda <keyword id="19588" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="candy">Candy</keyword> Company, but it wasn't because of the marshmallow chicks.Caitlin Servian: Just Born was actually looking for jelly bean technology.Narrator: The Peeps fell into their lap sort of by accident.Caitlin Servian: We found that they were making Peeps by hand in the back room by pastry tubes. They took 27 hours to make.Narrator: Just Born decided to ramp up production of these gooey treats.Caitlin Servian: Our founder's son, Bob Born, he actually mechanized the process, and thankfully, because of him, we are all able to enjoy a lot more Peeps.Narrator: Automating meant building a top-secret machine called the depositor, which could spit out rows of marshmallow chicks at once.Caitlin Servian: So the way the machine works, and this is actually proprietary so nobody can actually see the chicks being formed.Narrator: Now the process of making Peeps takes just six minutes from start to finish.So what's inside a Peep?There are four basic ingredients: sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, and air. They all combine to make the marshmallow base.But making that marshmallow isn't easy. Cooking and setting it takes hours.Caitlin Servian: It's very important, because Peeps have to be a specific density when they're deposited onto the belt to make sure that the marshmallow is stable.Narrator: The six minutes begin when the marshmallows hit the production belt.Caitlin Servian: For the chicks, those are just deposited. For our 2D shapes, it's basically like a cookie cutter.Narrator: There's already a thin layer of colored sugar on the belt. Just Born makes 19 colors of sugar, but ...Caitlin Servian: Yellow is our most popular color for chicks and bunnies, followed by pink and then blue.Narrator: The sugar is colored in these giant drums. The Peeps move on a conveyor belt.Caitlin Servian: They go into an enclosed area that's covered so that when the sugar blows around, it's contained. It's very quick.Narrator: Any sugar that doesn't stick gets recycled for the next batch on the belt.And Peeps aren't exactly known for their nutritional value. Each chick has 6.8 grams of carbs, and 6 of those come from sugar.Then it's onto the most important part.Caitlin Servian: Peeps become Peeps when they get their decorations. So when they're chicks and they get their eyes added, when they're bunnies and they get their nose added, that's when I would say they officially become Peeps.Narrator: The decorations are made with edible wax, then squirted onto the Peeps with precision.Caitlin Servian: We have an entire QA team that checks everything frequently throughout the entire production process. We also have associates who check for decoration and making sure that their eyes are in the right spot.We manufacture Peeps all year long. We produce the most Peeps for Easter season, but because they're on shelves starting really in January, we are producing them in the summer and fall.Narrator: But there's a reason Easter is the brand's time to shine.Caitlin Servian: Peeps are an Easter tradition. Families have passed them down through the generations, so if you grew up with them in your Easter basket, you're likely going to put them in your child's Easter basket.Narrator: But in order to keep up with Easter demand, the company had to make a hard choice.Caitlin Servian: Part of the reason why we made the difficult decision to not produce our Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day Peeps this past year was to ensure that we had the supply that people want for Easter production.Narrator: A pack of 10 marshmallows can cost less than $2, and they're sold everywhere in the United States and Canada at grocery stores and pharmacies. Though the pandemic shifted what consumers bought in 2020, Just Born says Peep sales didn't drop.Caitlin Servian: All Easter Peeps had been in stores for a couple of weeks at that point. And in fact, a lot of our customers still went out to buy Easter Peeps because it was that sense of normalcy people were seeking during the pandemic.Narrator: But this year, the company has been adapting to changing trends. He said he could accept a lower corporate tax rate than the 28% he proposed to help pay for his $2 trillion jobs over 15 years. But Biden also offered a resounding defense of both the scope of his plan and the idea that companies are not paying their fair share.<ul><li>Key quote: "We're going to - we're going to try to put an end to this. Not fleece them - 28%. If you're a mom, a dad, a cop, firefighter, police officer, et cetera, you're paying close to that in your income tax," Biden said at an event outlining his plan.</li></ul>The gap between the two parties seems difficult to bridge: Republicans have slammed the proposal for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcconnell-says-gop-wont-support-infrastructure-plan-2021-4">stretching the definition of infrastructure</a>. Sen. Intelligence experts and former spies have said the episode bears all the hallmarks of a top-down influence operation that utilized cut-outs and a cover story to make initial contact with a target - in this case, the Trump campaign - while maintaining plausible deniability. And ultimately, experts say, the campaign gave Russia a green light to move forward. <h2>A cover story</h2>The Russians came prepared with something else that has raised red flags not only for intelligence experts, but also for anyone familiar with Russia's policies and rhetoric: a cover story. According to Trump Jr., Veselnitskaya, and Akhmetshin, the only thing discussed during the meeting was Russia's adoption policy, which was altered to bar American families from adopting Russian children in retaliation for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/magnitsky-act-russian-adoptions-donald-trump-jr-meeting-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">signing of the Magnitsky Act in 2012</a>. That is plausible, given both Veselnitskaya and Akhmetshin's history of lobbying to repeal the act, which sanctioned high-level Kremlin officials suspected of human-rights abuses and corruption. But it was also a way for Moscow to approach the campaign "in a way that can be masked," CIA veteran Glenn Carle <a href="https://www.vox.com/conversations/2017/7/14/15971498/donald-trump-jr-russia-collusion-cia-kgb" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told Vox.</a><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/514b2a2e6bb3f7ce1c000006-2325/ap808824056574.jpg" alt="Sergei Magnitsky Russia Grave" />APA memorial to Sergei Magnitsky."If you're an intelligence agency or officer, you never walk up to somebody that you want to recruit or influence and tell them directly that you want to recruit or influence them," Carle said. He added: "You act upon them indirectly, whether they're witting or unwitting or complicit - and all of those things are slightly different. But in any case, you always have a cover story - always."In this case, the cover story had the dual purpose of broaching a subject of extreme importance to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Magnitsky Act was passed to punish those suspected of being involved in the death of Russian tax lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who uncovered a $230 million tax fraud scheme in 2008 that implicated high-level Kremlin officials and allies of President Vladimir Putin. The scheme quickly snowballed into one of the biggest corruption scandals of Putin's tenure, and the American legislation, which Putin called "outrageous," added insult to injury. Putin "understands he could one day be targeted" by the legislation if he loses power, Bill Browder, the investor who hired Magnitsky to investigate the tax fraud and spearheaded the Magnitsky Act after his death, <a href="https://twitter.com/NatashaBertrand/status/886600449654128641" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said on Sunday.</a><h2>A cut-out</h2>Veselnitskaya, an aggressive attorney from the Moscow region who is friends with Russia's top prosecutor and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/17/world/europe/russia-donald-trump-jr-kompromat-yuri-chaika.html?mcubz=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">"master of kompromat"</a> Yuri Chaika, "is probably too well-connected to have independently initiated such a high-level and sensitive encounter" with the Trump campaign, CIA veteran Rolf Mowatt-Larssen wrote recently for the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/trump-jrs-russia-meeting-sure-sounds-like-a-russian-intelligence-operation/2017/07/14/5f7f3dfe-6762-11e7-9928-22d00a47778f_story.html?utm_term=.c84db4905959" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Washington Post</a>. "Her efforts to meet Trump associates would have surely come to the attention of Russian authorities at some point, given Russian government email monitoring and other means of surveillance," wrote Larssen, now the director of the Intelligence and Defense Project at Harvard's Belfer Center. "The Kremlin would look harshly on someone going rogue in a manner that would surely damage ongoing Russian intelligence efforts related to the campaign."Veselnitskaya has said that "nothing at all about the presidential campaign" was discussed during the meeting. "In Vladimir Putin's Russia, everyone is potentially 'hybrid,'" Mark Galeotti, a Russia expert who is a senior research fellow at the Institute of International Relations Prague, wrote last week. "Both who they seem to be, and, at the same time, an instrument of the government."Ekaterina Schulmann, a political scientist at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, echoed that assessment to The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/16/world/europe/aras-agalarov-trump-kremlin.html?emc=edit_th_20170717&amp;nl=todaysheadlines&amp;nlid=64529572&amp;_r=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">New York Times</a>. "In a sense, almost no one is a direct agent of the Kremlin," she said. "But almost anyone can become one if the need arises."Aras Agalarov, a Russian billionaire with business ties to Trump whose son, Emin, asked his publicist Rob Goldstone to reach out to the campaign last June, said <a href="https://www.vedomosti.ru/business/characters/2015/06/22/597305-pochemu-to-vse-zabili-chto-blatter-sdelal-dlya-mirovogo-futbola" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">in a 2015 interview</a> with the Russian newspaper Vedomosti that when the Kremlin calls, "there are things that you cannot turn down." Indeed, Agalarov evidently told the Vice President of his company, Irakly "Ike" Kaveladze, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-eighth-person-at-trump-jrs-russia-meeting-identified-irakly-kaveladze-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">to attend the meeting</a> on his behalf. Kaveladze's lawyer, Scott Balber, told reporters that he initially thought he would be a translator, but Veselnitskaya brought her own.<h2>A 'green light'</h2>Trump Jr.'s response to Goldstone's overture - "I love it" - and that he did not flag the offer to the FBI gave the Russians a green light to move forward with a longer-term operation, the ex-spies say. "If the target did not report what was clearly something that had been developed for the target as an intelligence approach, that would have signaled to the Russians the possibility of a future relationship that they could pursue in further depth," Mowatt-Larssen told CNN on Monday night."The Russians had been gathering compromising material on the candidates, and were now wondering how best to influence" the election, Larssen said. But the documents were not released via WikiLeaks until July 2016, just over one month after Trump Jr., Manafort, and Kushner met with Veselnitskaya and Akhmetshin. Michael Carpenter, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia under President Barack Obama, told CNN that this is typically how an intelligence operation begins. "You dangle dirt and promise to follow up later on," he said.Trump Jr. has said the meeting was inconsequential and a waste of time. But Veselnitskaya left a folder with documents in his office, Akhmetshin said - the contents of which are still unknown. The events that followed - a change in the RNC's Ukraine platform, the release of hacked DNC emails, early Trump adviser Carter Page's trip to Moscow, former national security adviser Michael Flynn's conversations with Russia's ambassador, and Kushner's reported attempt to set up a "backchannel" with Moscow in December - raise the spectre of a quid pro quo."The information that was reportedly passed at this meeting has the feel of representing intelligence 'feed material' to establish interest in more, higher quality information in the future," Mowatt-Larssen and Ryan Goodman, an NYU law professor, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/16/opinions/trump-jr-meeting-putin-game-plan-opinion-mowatt-larssen-goodman/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wrote on Sunday</a>.
