Global recession fears, increased inflation and higher interest rates have had a major impact on PC demand and global PC shipments logged 65.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022, a 28.5 per cent decrease from the fourth quarter of 2021, a report showed on Thursday. According to <keyword id="6371981" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gartner" source="Orion">Gartner</keyword>, this marks the largest quarterly shipment decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s. For the entire year, PC shipments reached 286.2 million units in 2022, a 16.2 per cent decrease from 2021. "Since many consumers already have relatively new PCs that were purchased during the pandemic, a lack of affordability is superseding any motivation to buy, causing consumer PC demand to drop to its lowest level in years," said <keyword id="360892" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mikako-kitagawa" source="Orion">Mikako Kitagawa</keyword>, director analyst. The enterprise PC market is also being impacted by a slowing economy. "PC demand among enterprises began declining in the third quarter of 2022, but the market has now shifted from softness to deterioration," said Kitagawa. Enterprise buyers are extending PC lifecycles and delaying purchases, meaning the business market will likely not return to growth until 2024. While <keyword id="13722" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lenovo" source="Orion">Lenovo</keyword> maintained 24 per cent market share at the top, the company experienced its steepest decline. Lenovo's shipments fell in all regions except in Japan, declining over 30 per cent in <keyword id="174408" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="emea" source="Orion">EMEA</keyword> and Latin America. HP and <keyword id="28251" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dell" source="Orion">Dell</keyword> also experienced historically steep declines. HP was hit hardest in the EMEA market, where shipments decreased 44 per cent year-over-year. For Dell, weak demand in the large business market impacted shipments in the second half of 2022. The Asia-Pacific market excluding Japan declined 29.4 per cent year-over-year, mainly due to the market in China. "The PC industry experienced very unusual ups and downs over the past 11 years. After the extraordinary growth period between 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the market has clearly begun a downward trend which will continue until the beginning of 2024," said Kitagawa. Global PC demand sees its deepest collapse since mid-90s amid recession fears: Gartner

Chip-maker <keyword id="28115" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="intel" source="Orion">Intel</keyword> is reportedly planning job cuts that can run in thousands, especially hitting its sales and marketing teams, as consumer PC sales nosedive globally. <keyword id="29740" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bloomberg" source="Orion">Bloomberg</keyword> reported on Wednesday that the layoffs will affect nearly 20 per cent of team members at its hit sales and marketing teams. The cuts will be announced "as early as this month," around the same time as Intel's third-quarter earnings report on October 27, according to the report. The company currently has 113,700 employees globally. Intel was yet to comment on the report. Worldwide PC shipments totalled 68 million units in the third quarter of 2022, a huge 19.5 per cent decrease from the third quarter of 2021, according to <keyword id="6371981" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gartner" source="Orion">Gartner</keyword>. This is the steepest market decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s and the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline. "This quarter's results could mark a historic slowdown for the PC market. While supply chain disruptions have finally eased, high inventory has now become a major issue given weak PC demand in both the consumer and business markets," said <keyword id="360892" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mikako-kitagawa" source="Orion">Mikako Kitagawa</keyword>, Director <keyword id="108560" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="analyst" source="Orion">Analyst</keyword> at Gartner. Chip-maker Intel also suffered a 25 per cent decline in consumer chip sales in the second quarter (Q2), along with revenue of $15.3 billion, down 22 per cent year over year (YoY). Its profits nosedived as it lost half a billion dollars in the April-June period -- a 109 per cent decline in profit from the $5.1 billion it saw in Q2 last year. Company CEO Pat Gelsinger said that the results "were below the standards we have set for the company and our shareholders". "We must and will do better. The sudden and rapid decline in economic activity was the largest driver, but the shortfall also reflects our own execution issues," Gelsinger had said in a statement. Intel revised its full-year revenue guidance from $65 billion to $68 billion. <keyword id="15236664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dave-zinsner" source="Orion">Dave Zinsner</keyword>, Intel's chief financial officer, had said that "We expect Q2 and Q3 to be the financial bottom for the company". Intel plans major layoffs this month as PC sales nosedive: Report

New Delhi, Jan 14 () The global PC market grew 2.3 per cent year-on-year in October-December 2019 with shipment totalling 70.6 million units, data from research firm Gartner showed.
The worldwide shipment was 69 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018, Gartner said its preliminary results for fourth quarter of 2019.
"The PC market experienced growth for the first time since 2011, driven by vibrant business demand for Windows 10 upgrades, particularly in the US, EMEA ( Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) and Japan," Gartner senior principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said. 
 "We expect this growth to continue through this year even after Windows 7 support comes to an end this month, as many businesses in emerging regions such as China, Eurasia and the emerging Asia/Pacific have not yet upgraded," she added.
Contrasted against the ongoing weakness in consumer personal computers (PC) demand, business PC demand has led to unit growth in five of the last seven quarters, Kitagawa said. 
 "The ongoing Intel CPU shortage, which began mid-last year, became a major issue again on PC delivery to enterprise customers by the top three vendors. Without this shortage, shipments would have grown faster than the reported results," she said.
 Worldwide PC shipments totalled 261.2 million units in 2019, a marginal 0.6 per cent increase from 2018. 
 This was the first time in seven years that the global PC market experienced growth.
 Lenovo maintained its number one position in the worldwide PC market and widened its share over HP Inc. With the exception of the Asia/Pacific, Lenovo recorded year-over-year growth in all regions. Consumers continue to abandon PCs, choosing instead to use their smartphones for more and more tasks, Mikako Kitagawa, an analyst at the research firm, noted in the report."In the consumer space, the fundamental market structure, due to changes on PC user behavior, still remains, and continues to impact market growth," Kitagawa said.Businesses are still buying PCs, and their purchases boosted overall sales in the quarter. But those purchases are being driven by companies belatedly upgrading to Windows 10, the latest version of Microsoft's PC operating system - and that's a temporary phenomenon, Kitagawa said."PC momentum will weaken in two years when the replacement peak for Windows 10 passes," she said.As might be expected in a maturing, declining industry, the quarterly results demonstrated how the PC business continues to consolidate around a handful of players. Lonovo and Hewlett-Packard alone accounted for nearly 44% of all shipments in the second quarter, up from about 41% a year ago. Together, shipments from the top five PC makers comprised 74% of the total, up from 69% in the same period last year.<h2>The same story is playing out in the US as it is globally</h2>The story was much the same in the United States as it was for the world as a whole. US PC shipments grew in the second quarter to 14.5 million, but were up by only 1.7%. The result marked the first positive quarter for the industry in the US in nearly two years - but it was still millions of units below the market's peak.Meanwhile, in the US, traditional PC shipments are facing another challenge - Chromebooks, which Gartner doesn't include in its shipment numbers. Shipments of computers based on Google's Chrome OS software grew 8% in the quarter. The PC industry just showed its first signs of growth in 6 years - but don't expect this rebound to last

<keyword id="6365259" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="PC">PC</keyword> <keyword id="154741" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shipments">shipments</keyword> shrunk by 9.5% in Q2’15 and stood at 68.4 million units according to research firm Gartner. This is the steepest plunge in shipment numbers since Q3’13 the company said and forecasted a 4.4% decline in 2015. 
 
"The price hike of PCs became more apparent in some regions due to a sharp appreciation of the US dollar against local currencies. The price hike could hinder PC demand in these regions," Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said. 
 
"Secondly, the worldwide PC market experienced unusually positive desk-based growth last year due to the end of Windows XP support. After the XP impact was phased out, there have not been any major growth drivers to stimulate a PC refresh," he said 
 
Kitagawa further said the Windows 10 launch scheduled for third quarter of 2015 has created self-regulated inventory control, as PC vendors and the channels tried clearing inventory as much as possible before the Windows 10 launch. 
 
Lenovo topped the charts with 19.7% share, closely followed by HP with 17.4% and Dell with 14%. Shipments in the Asia/Pacific region reached 24.2 million units in the second quarter of 2015, a 2.9% dip from last year’s figures.

In a statement, <a href="http://news.lenovo.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=2005">President and COO Gianfranco Lanci says that the data shows</a> "continued growth of our market share in our core PC business, which is a strong, powerful growth engine for the company." He says that the company has "ample opportunity for continued growth" in the sector - despite the fact that while its percentage market share is increasing, its real term shipment numbers are dropping.This is, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/07/09/pc-sales-continue-to-fall/">as the Wall Street Journal points out</a>, the biggest drop in almost two years (2.6% in 2012, 11.1% in 2013, 0.8% in 2014). <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3090817">There are three factors that Gartner identifies as contributing to this latest decline</a>:<ol><li>"A sharp appreciation of the US dollar against local currencies," is one according to principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa - making PCs more expensive.</li><li>"The worldwide PC market experienced unusually positive desk-based growth last year due to the end of Windows XP support. In short, people aren't buying PCs as they wait for the latest OS from Microsoft - further denting sales.</li></ol>Overall, Gartner is forecasting a decline of 4.4% in PC shipments throughout the entirety of 2015. The research firm expects the industry to return to "slow and steady growth in 2016." Bloomberg tweets: "several large banks have already been contacted about financing an offer."
Dell had an awful Q3, when it <a href="http://content.dell.com/us/en/corp/d/secure/2012-11rtewq155-133pr.aspx">missed analysts'</a> expectations of $13.9 billion in revenues and $0.40 in earnings per share. The actual numbers: $13.7 billion in revenue and $0.39 in EPS.
Dell is suffering from a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-death-of-the-pc-slide-deck-2013-1">decline in consumer interest in PCs.</a>
PC sales were down almost 5% during the holidays, according to Gartner.
"Tablets have dramatically changed the device landscape for PCs, not so much by 'cannibalising' PC sales, but by causing PC users to shift consumption to tablets rather than replacing older PCs," Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/windows-suffers-as-holiday-pc-sales-shrink-2013-1">told Reuters.</a>

Worldwide PC sales dove almost 7 percent (6.9%) according to a new report published Thursday by market research <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2647517">firm Gartner.</a>
For the full year, shipments were down 10%, Gartner found. That's the same decline that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pc-market-shrunk-by-10-idc-says-2013-12">market research firm IDC predicted a few weeks ago</a>.
Gartner says that in 2013 "global PC shipments suffered the worst decline in PC Market history" and that this is the seventh consecutive quarter of declining PC shipments.
As we all know by now, people are increasingly buying tablets instead of <keyword id="89180" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="PCS">PCs</keyword>, particularly in emerging markets.
In the U.S. the PC market shrunk by 7.5% this quarter, Gartner reports.
Now the good news: Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa thinks this is the rock bottom, at least for the U.S. market. In 2014, she predicts that light new hybrid tablet/PC models will encourage people to get rid of their old PCs and buy new ones.
That said, IDC predicts the worldwide PC market will still shrink in 2014, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pc-market-shrunk-by-10-idc-says-2013-12">by another 3.8%.</a>
<keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword> took the first-place spot for the quarter and the year, stealing it from HP, Gartner reports.

2013 Was The 'Worst Decline In PC Market History,' Gartner Says

Worldwide PC shipments declined to 90.3 million units in the last three months of 2012, Gartner said, indicating that the sector was suffering from a shift in consumer habits as much as a weak global economy.
"Tablets have dramatically changed the device landscape for PCs, not so much by 'cannibalising' PC sales, but by causing PC users to shift consumption to tablets rather than replacing older PCs," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.
"Whereas as once we imagined a world in which individual users would have both a PC and a tablet as personal devices, we increasingly suspect that most individuals will shift consumption activity to a personal tablet, and perform creative and administrative tasks on a shared PC."
The industry was hoping that the latest version of Microsoft's <keyword id="6354717" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Windows">Windows</keyword>, released in October, would revitalise a sector which had been buffeted by competition from tablets and smartphones over the past year.
But Gartner said the new operating system did not have a significant impact on PC shipments in the quarter, in part because the first Windows 8 devices lacked the excitement of the touch interface found in tablets.
Hewlett-Packard regained the top spot from China's Lenovo Group in the quarter, Gartner said, thanks to its strength in the consumer market, which is a stronger driver than corporate sales in the holiday season. However, the Silicon Valley company's shipments did not grow compared to a year ago.
Despite losing the top spot, Lenovo recorded the strongest growth of the top manufacturers, with a 8.2 percent rise in shipments on a year ago.
Dell was in third place, although its sales fell 21 percent year-on-year, while Acer, down 11 percent, was in fourth position.

The commodities giant <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zinc-price-jumps-as-glencore-cuts-zinc-production-by-a-third-2015-10">Glencore announced it was removing 500,000 tonnes of zinc from the market</a>, and now zinc prices are up about 9%. Glencore says it's reducing production at its operations in Australia, Kazakhstan, and South America to preserve the value of its reserves in the ground "at a time of low zinc and lead prices, which do not correctly value the scarce nature of our resources." Glencore's stock is up more than 6% on the news.Alcoa whiffs. The aluminum giant Alcoa unofficially started earnings season with a lackluster report. The company announced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/alcoa-q3-earnings-2015-10">earnings of $0.07 per share</a>, missing the $0.13 that Wall Street was anticipating. Revenue tumbled 10.7% versus a year ago to $5.57 billion, missing the $5.64 billion that was expected. China proved to be a headwind for the quarter, and the company lowered its 2015 automotive production forecast for China to 1% to 2% from 5% to 8%. "The third quarter brought economic headwinds and significant volatility in some of our markets," CEO Klaus Kleinfeld said in the earnings statement. The stock is down about 3.5% in premarket trade.AB InBev really wants SABMiller. After SABMiller said Anheuser-Busch InBev's takeover offer "substantially undervalues" the company, AB InBev has fired back. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ab-inbev-to-sabmiller-dont-let-this-opportunity-slip-away-2015-10?r=UK&amp;IR=T">InBev argues that SABMiller's rejection "lacks credibility,"</a> with AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito suggesting, "Our proposal creates significant value for everybody." Brito also suggested it would be a long time before SABMiller shareholders would see the stock go to InBEv's offer price of $63 (£42) per share. Patriot Coal's bankruptcy was approved. A US bankruptcy judge granted Patriot Coal <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/patriot-coal-wins-court-approval-of-plan-to-hand-over-mines-1444344839">approval of its Chapter 11 filing</a>. The Wall Street Journal reports, "The plan proposes to sell Patriot's mines to Blackhawk Mining LLC and a unit of nonprofit Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund, which aren't offering cash for the assets but instead would issue new debt or take responsibility for existing Patriot debts." As part of the plan, Patriot reached an agreement with retirees over how their benefits would be administered.PC demand is weak. The research firm Gartner says <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3146617">worldwide PC shipments totaled 73.7 million units in the third quarter, down 7.7% compared with last year</a>. According to Gartner, demand in emerging markets was weak because of the strong US dollar. "The global PC market has experienced price increases of around 10% throughout the year, due to the sharp appreciation of the US dollar against local currencies," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "In the third quarter of 2015, this continued to be a major cause for weaker demand in those regions."Crude oil is up again. Crude oil is back above $50 a barrel and trading at a 2-1/2-month high. West Texas Intermediate crude oil hit a low of $38.24 a barrel on August 24 and has rallied more than 30% from that level. West Texas Intermediate is trading higher by 2.8% at $50.84 a barrel.The UK's trade deficit narrowed. The UK's trade deficit narrowed to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-09/u-k-has-larger-than-forecast-trade-gap-construction-plunges">£11.1 billion in August</a>, which was larger than the £9.9 billion deficit that was anticipated by Bloomberg's consensus. Exports rose 3.5% month-over-month, while imports slipped 0.7% from July. The British pound is little changed at 1.5343.Global stock markets continue higher. Japan's Nikkei (+1.6%) led the way higher in Asia, and Spain's IBEX (+1.5%) paces the advance in Europe. S&amp;P 500 futures are up 2.50 points at 2,009.00.US economic data remains light. Import and export prices will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET, and wholesale inventories will cross the wires at 10 a.m. ET.
