<ul class="summary-list"><li>Conservatives are fleeing blue states in favor of red states. </li><li>And South Carolina is one of the fastest growing states for newcomers. </li></ul>Conservatives are flocking en masse from blue states to one Republican stronghold in particular: South Carolina.Between 2017 and 2021, about a third of South Carolina's new arrivals came from blue states while a quarter came from red states and the rest came from divided states or outside the US, according to US Census Data analyzed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/blue-state-residents-streamed-into-south-carolina-heres-why-it-stayed-ruby-red-a049c74c">by The Wall Street Journal</a>.And the majority of those newcomers — about 57% — were Republican, the Journal reported, citing data from a nonpartisan voter-file vendor called L2.In 2022, the top 10 states people moved to South Carolina from were North Carolina, Georgia, New York, California, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey, and Maryland, according to US Census data <a target="_blank" href="https://cms1files.revize.com/LowcountryTableau/reports/People%20are%20Moving%20to%20SC.pdf">reviewed by The State.</a>Conservative Move, a real-estate company with about 500 agents across the country, helps conservatives find homes near like-minded people — and South Carolina is becoming a big draw.The group's founder, Paul Chabot, told Business Insider that while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-california-texas-conservative-affordable-realtor-helps-others-2023-8">Texas</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-california-to-florida-pros-cons-weather-politics-facebook-2024-3">Florida</a> consistently rank among the top locations his conservative clients choose to move to, he's seen a big spike in the number of people who want to relocate to South Carolina in the past two years. He said his company currently has about 5,000 clients who are considering moving to the state soon.Many of his clients are coming from places like California, Washington state, and Oregon, he said.Chabot said the people who want to relocate are fed up with living in Democratic-controlled states that they believe are becoming less affordable because of liberal policies like the new law in California mandating a $20 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-food-has-become-a-luxury-restaurant-prices-california-wage-2024-4#:~:text=Some%20diners%20now%20think%20fast,%2420%20fast%2Dfood%20worker%20wage.">minimum wage for fast-food workers</a>. In response, many fast-food restaurants have raised their prices. Conservatives are also moving away from more liberal states that they no longer consider safe, Chabot said."They want to live in areas where they know that they're going to feel safe, that there's going to be a police response, that the police are respected," he said.Brad Liles, a South Carolina real-estate agent based in Spartanburg, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/18/us/greenville-real-estate-conservatives.html">told The New York Times</a> that he and his colleagues have started calling the flood of Republican homebuyers in the state<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seems-everyone-moving-migration-actually-dramatically-slowed-2024-2"> "the great migration."</a>A typical home in South Carolina sold for about $281,000, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/51/sc/">Zillow's median-home-price data</a> as of February. By comparison, Zillow reported <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/9/ca/">California's median-home-sale price</a> was about $673,000, while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/59/wa/">Washington state's</a> was about $526,000. South Carolina even has an edge over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/54/tx/">Texas</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/14/fl/">Florida</a>, where the median price of a home was about $316,000 and $363,000, respectively, according to Zillow.Some South Carolina transplants told the Times that it's not just about affordability. They also want to live around like-minded conservatives."When I walked inside banks or stores or schools, there was always Christian music playing in the background," Lina Brock, who recently moved from California to Greenville, South Carolina, told the Times about her new city. "I felt good, I felt welcomed. I felt like I was in the United States."But the arrival of new residents to Greenville has driven up housing prices, pricing out many longtime Black residents, the Times reported. Since 1990, Greenville's Black population has declined by 22%, according to a 2023 <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="css-yywogo" href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ec193fcd3f194bc0a7f8353f69f24aa8">study from Furman University</a>. By comparison, the city's total population has increased by 21% in the same time period, the Times reported.Chabot said blue states need to take a page out of red states' playbook."States right now are really competing with each other for population," Chabot said. The World Population Prospects 2024 report, released on Thursday, said that the world's population is expected to continue growing over the coming 50-60 years, reaching a peak of around 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s, significantly up from 8.2 billion in 2024. After peaking, the global population is projected to start declining gradually, falling to 10.2 billion people by the end of the century. India, which surpassed <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="keywords">China</keyword> as the world's most populous nation last year, will continue to hold that position through 2100. "The population of India, which is expected to remain the world's largest throughout the century, will likely decline by 12% after reaching its peak in the early 2060s at about 1.7 billion," the <keyword id="19898339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN" source="keywords">UN</keyword> report published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), <keyword id="271075" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="population-division" source="Orion">Population Division</keyword> said. According to the report, India's population in 2024 is projected at 1.45 billion and this will peak to 1.69 billion in 2054. After this, India's population is projected to decline to 1.5 billion by the end of the century in 2100, but the country will still remain the most populous nation on Earth. Responding to a question by PTI on population projections for India, Senior Population Affairs Officer, Population Division, <keyword id="6355835" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="un" source="Orion">UN</keyword> DESA Clare Menozzi said at a press conference that "India is currently the largest country in the world in terms of population, and it is projected to stay so throughout the century. The population is currently estimated at 1.45 billion, and it's supposed to increase further to 1.69 billion. "It's supposed to peak around the 2060s in size and then it starts to slightly decline. So by the end of the century, India is projected to be around 1.5 billion, but will still the largest country in the world by a large margin." The report said that China's population, currently 1.41 billion in 2024, will fall to 1.21 billion in 2054 and further decline to 633 million by 2100. "It is anticipated that China, the country currently with the world's second-largest population, will likely experience the largest absolute population loss between 2024 and 2054 (204 million)," followed by <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> (21 million) and <keyword id="6358826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> (10 million). "Longer-range population projections are more uncertain" for China, it said. "However, due to its large size and sustained low level of fertility, China is also likely to record the largest population decline of any country through the end of the century (786 million people). By 2100, China is projected to have lost more than a half of its current population and to have returned to a population size comparable to that recorded in the late 1950s (50% probability)." Responding to a question on the significantly low population projection for China, Director of the Population Division at UN DESA John Wilmoth said that "it really relates to the level of fertility that's observed currently in China. The current number is right around one birth per woman on average over a lifetime." "Given that you need 2.1 births to maintain the current population without migration, if fertility levels remain at such a low level, even if they come up slightly, any fertility level if it's below two, or especially below 1.8 or below 1.5, you're really getting into low levels of fertility and it produces a long run decline that's quite significant. And that's true for China. It's true for some other countries in this analysis," Wilmoth said. Currently, nearly one-fifth of all countries and areas, including China, Italy, the Republic of Korea and Spain, are experiencing what is sometimes referred to as "ultra-low" fertility, with fewer than 1.4 live births per woman over a lifetime. The report added that the global fertility rate currently stands at 2.25 live births per woman, down from 3.31 births in 1990. "More than half of all countries and areas globally have fertility below the replacement level of 2.1 live births per woman. This is the level required for a population to maintain a constant size in the long run (without migration), with each generation being followed by another of roughly equal size," it said. Pakistan is projected to overtake the US as the third-largest country in the world, with a population of 389 million in 2054. Currently, the US is the third largest country in the world with a population of 345 million and in 2054, it will be the fourth largest with 384 million people. Pakistan will remain the third largest country in the world, with a population of 511 million people in 2100. The report said that the estimated likelihood that the world's population will peak within the current century is very high, with a probability of 80%, a major change in UN projections from a decade ago, when this probability was around 30%. The size of the world's population in 2100 is now expected to be 6%smaller - or about 700 million people fewer - than anticipated a decade ago. In about 126 countries and areas, the population is likely to continue growing through 2054, potentially reaching a peak later in the century or beyond 2100. This group includes several of the world's most populous countries: India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and the United States of America. In 2023, the global number of deaths among children under age 5 fell below 5 million for the first time in recent history. However, 95% of such deaths took place in the 126 countries with populations that are still growing, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. The report added that globally, life expectancy at birth reached 73.3 years in 2024, an increase of 8.4 years since 1995. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average longevity of around 77.4 years globally in 2054. Since 2022, life expectancy has returned to levels observed before the emergence of the coronavirus disease in nearly all countries and areas. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 and 2021, global life expectancy at birth fell to 70.9 years, down from 72.6 in 2019. The report said that by 2080, persons aged 65 or older will outnumber children under 18. "By the late 2070s, the number of persons at ages 65 years and higher globally is projected to reach 2.2 billion, surpassing the number of children (under age 18). By the mid-2030s, it is projected that there will be 265 million persons aged 80 years or older, more than the number of infants (1 year of age or less)," it said.

He was often <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/georgia/">mired in the low-to-mid 40s</a> in most Georgia polls.A big part of that slippage was because Trump was winning over <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/13/us/elections/times-siena-poll-georgia-crosstabs.html">an atypical number of Black voters</a> for a GOP presidential candidate, and a chunk of young voters were opting instead for third-party candidates like independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr.But Harris has reversed that trend, giving her momentum that had eluded Biden in Georgia this year.A recent Emerson College/The Hill survey showed Trump with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://emersoncollegepolling.com/july-2024-swing-state-polls-harris-trails-trump-in-arizona-georgia-michigan-pennsylvania-tied-in-wisconsin/">a narrow two-point lead</a> (48% to 46%) over Harris in the Peach State. And the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll taken in Georgia showed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-07-30/kamala-harris-erases-trump-s-swing-state-lead-in-2024-election-poll">Harris and Trump tied at 47% support</a> each among registered voters.<h2 id="ca5dee7b-98a0-4816-a3f1-56d19a3bcf70">Harris can expand her suburban support</h2>Trump's allies had long prepared for a rematch with Biden, using a playbook centered on sweeping GOP voters and winning over independents and undecided voters on the economy.It could have been particularly effective in Atlanta's suburbs, especially in outer suburban communities where Republicans still dominate in non-federal statewide races.But Harris' ascent has thrown those plans into disarray.Even though Harris is a key part of the Biden administration, she has a chance to reintroduce herself to an electorate that didn't want a 2020 rematch. Her focus on issues like upholding the Constitution and protecting reproductive rights puts her squarely where a lot of suburban residents are ideologically.Trump weighed down suburban Republicans across the country in 2016, and in 2018 and 2020 his brand of Republicanism continued to push many suburbs — including those in the Atlanta area — further from their old GOP leanings.<div type="image" title="Trump" height="3906" width="6000" msid="112270801" hostid="261" sizebytes="709492"></div>Trump underperformed in many inner suburban Atlanta communities during the March GOP presidential primary, with former UN ambassador Nikki Haley earning <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/haley-trump-georgia-gop-primary-election-day-votes-suburbs-biden-2024-3">thousands of votes</a> even after she had left the race.A sizable number of these anti-Trump GOP voters could eventually migrate to Harris and give her added support in a region where she'll also need to perform strongly with Democrats to overcome Trump's rural strength.<h2 id="43a607f2-c4cc-43e6-bba0-d91a216451ea">Trump still hasn't let 2020 go</h2>Elections are about the future. And if Trump holds on to 2020 instead of uniting Georgia Republicans, Harris will likely benefit.During Trump's rally on Saturday, he once again <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/GZQ/status/1820125962039906808">lashed out</a> at Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, leaning into the bitterness of the 2020 election that tore apart the GOP.Trump has long argued, without evidence, that he was the true victor in Georgia that year. But neither Kemp nor Raffensperger would aid Trump in overturning the state's presidential results, and most Republicans have sought to move beyond the ex-president's grievances on the issue.But not Trump."He's a bad guy, he's a disloyal guy, and he's a very average governor," Trump told rally attendees of Kemp on Saturday."In my opinion, they want us to lose," the former president said of Kemp and Raffensperger.After Trump in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/112899808261699133">Truth Social post</a> mentioned Kemp's wife, Marty, by saying he didn't want the Georgia first lady's endorsement, the governor <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/BrianKempGA/status/1819851284343832838">told the ex-president on X</a> to "leave my family out of it."In 2022, Trump tried to dispatch Kemp and Raffensperger in GOP primaries to no avail, as they defeated MAGA-aligned challengers.This year, a divided Republican Party headed into November would seriously imperil the party's chances at flipping the state as the Harris campaign pours time and resources into Georgia.If Trump can't even appear in Georgia alongside the state's popular sitting GOP governor, it could affect organizing and turnout — as Kemp's get-out-the-vote operation was critical in his reelection victory against Democrat Stacey Abrams in 2022.

"Or just making today's fairly opaque exclusive markets radically transparent and global and accessible to all. That's what I think the mission of digital assets is undertaking, and it's a massive transformation," Douglas said during Insider's virtual event, presented by Amberdata, "Finance Meets Its Future," which took place on Thursday, March 23rd.During the session, Laila Maidan, investing correspondent for markets at Insider, spoke with Douglas and other financial experts about how cryptocurrency, digital payment platforms, and sustainable investing matter for digital transformation. CEO of Custodia Bank, Caitlin Long, believes the role of digital assets exists in the payments world. "You can right now download, say the Lightning Network code and move any fiat currency in the world using Lightning as an intermediary currency," Long said. "Nobody needs permission to run that code. And so the world's going to change pretty radically as adoption rates start to increase."This permissionless system is a form of decentralized finance or "de-fi." Guy Hirsch, managing director for Kraken in the US, said he believes de-fi is the future of finance. "We would have to work really diligently with state actors, with regulators to still allow this innovation to flourish, not to be afraid of it, but embrace it because it will better society," Hirsch said.There are, of course, challenges to adopting digital assets including concerns about centralized banks and government agencies. Long said, "The US is on such a different cycle with the rest of the world, and those who are onshore in the US tend to be very American-centric. But we need to recognize this technology knows no borders, and that's one of the powerful features of it."Throughout the conversation, Hirsch remained focused on the potential digital assets have to enable greater freedom globally. "If you are a creator in Africa and you suddenly realize that you can create digital art and gain access to the global economy and earn a living by selling your art in a way that wasn't accessible before and earn royalties as your art is being sold and sold again, that is amazing because you no longer need to migrate."The experts agreed that digital asset adoption is imminent. Long said, "This is inevitable and eight billion people can download the code and run it. There is no stopping that. And most of those eight billion people have phones and the engineers are just making it easier and easier for users to interface."

The researchers used nearly 375 million property records to reveal where people settled and built from 1810 to 2015.At the start of the 1800s, just 6% of the US population (around 5.3 million people) lived in urban areas. Today, more than four-fifths of the population (around 309 million people) do.Most of the country's urban development happened in the last century, according to the study. The video below shows five cities — Seattle, Phoenix, Denver, Miami, Washington, DC, and Rochester — bursting onto the US map like fireworks over the last 200 years. Blue pixels represent areas that are less developed, while red pixels represent the most developed areas. (Grey patches represent water.) Each pixel indicates an area of around 670,000 square feet.Rochester developed first around the mid-1800s. Seattle, Washington, DC, and Denver landed on the map around the turn of the 20th century. Phoenix and Miami were built up later, around the mid-1900s, but by 2010, they were more widely developed than the other three cities.While the common narrative is that urban expansion moved westward over time in the US, the researchers discovered exceptions to that rule. Denver developed much earlier than the rest of Colorado, and Miami developed late compared to the rest of the South, which the authors attribute to Florida's rough terrain. In many cases, the researchers found, individual counties started to develop even before their respective states were declared part of the US.In the future, this research could be overlaid with demographic data to determine how Americans of various ages, races, and ethnicities inhabited certain areas over time — offering a window into patterns of poverty and displacement. It may also help illuminate which cities have been ravaged the most by natural disasters."Such new knowledge is highly relevant as it will tell us more about exposure of the built environment to coastal hazards, or wildfire — and hopefully teach us lessons what can be improved to avoid problematic developments in the past," Stefan Leyk, the study's lead author, told Business Insider. <h2>How the US went from mostly rural to mostly urban </h2>Prior to the University of Colorado Boulder study, historians had mostly used two methods to examine urban development: census records indicating where peopled lived, and satellite imagery showing how land was used over time. But there were limitations to those data sets. Satellite images only date back to the 1970s and often lack detail. Census data, meanwhile, is often missing prior to the mid-20th century.The Colorado researchers found that property records from the real estate company Zillow provided a clearer portrait of urban development. These records allowed them to zoom in on individual areas — down to the size of a large office building or shopping center — over the course of two centuries. Unsurprisingly, the researchers determined that where people built was strongly associated with where people lived. During the period of rapid development from 1910 to 2010, the US population density more than tripled. Between 1910 and 1920, the US went from being a mostly rural nation to mostly urban one. Expansion in urban counties dropped off between 2000 and 2010, while density shot up during that time period.General trends, however, miss the differences between cities: In recent years, density has declined in Atlanta, steadily risen in Boston, and skyrocketed in San Francisco.Still, US cities are nowhere near as dense as urban hubs like Jakarta, Indonesia (which dates back to 1527) or Seoul, South Korea (which dates back to 1394). That means there's still time to build more inclusively and prevent overcrowding. This new research might even serve as a roadmap.

They possessed knowledge of the hibiscus flower, whose bright-red buds could be brewed into an aromatic and medicinal drink.Spiced with ginger, cloves, and citrus, sorrel — the Caribbean name for hibiscus flowers — became the original "Red Drink" among the African diaspora.In the United States, Black Americans <a href="https://www.insider.com/taste-test-hibiscus-juice-red-drink-mocktail-juneteenth-2022-6">celebrate Juneteenth with red-hued food</a>, which some food historians believe <a href="https://www.insider.com/food-historian-explains-why-red-plays-large-role-on-juneteenth-2022-6">symbolizes the blood shed by their enslaved ancestors</a>. In 1920, a trained chef named Deighton Merrick and his wife Nita left Barbados for America, seeking opportunities that weren't available to them on the colonized island. Just like their ancestors before them, the Merricks taught recipes to their offspring, who then passed them down to their own children."It is a dark history, but there is so much joy and persistence in this," Jackie Summers, the Merricks' grandson and owner of the liquor company Sorel, said. "This country would like to wash over all of the things that it's done, but by preserving their traditions, they were taking their lives into their own hands."<h2>Reconnecting with heritage across a diaspora</h2>There is no one definitive version of sorrel, reflecting the varied experiences and cultures of the African diaspora, according to Summers.In Jamaica, where there was <a href="https://gal-dem.com/tracing-roots-of-the-chinese-jamaican-diaspora/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an influx of Chinese indentured workers</a> in the late 19th and early 20th century, sorrel is flavored with ginger and five spice. "We're recovering our heritage. We're learning from each other, celebrating in our Blackness, and treating our cuisines with the same reverence that anybody else around the world does theirs."

<ul><li>A report by the Centre of Immigration Studies shows that the number of Telugu-speaking residents has grown by 86% over the past 7 years.</li><li><keyword id="6357760" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengali">Bengali</keyword> comes in second, followed by <keyword id="6356629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil">Tamil</keyword> in third place with an increase of 57% and 55% respectively. </li><li>Even <keyword id="6357660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindi">Hindi</keyword> made into the top five with a 42% increase.</li></ul>While Spanish may be the most widely spoken language in the United States, <keyword id="13104" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telugu">Telugu</keyword>, Bengali and Tamil have all shown rampant growth over the past seven years. A report by the <a href="https://cis.org/Report/Almost-Half-Speak-Foreign-Language-Americas-Largest-Cities">Centre of Immigration Studies</a> highlights how nearly half of the residents of the five biggest cities of the United States speak a language other than English at home. And, the fastest growth has been recorded by Telugu with an 86% increase between the years of 2010 to 2017. Aside from Telugu, eight of the 10 fastest growing foreign languages in the United States are languages that are also spoken in India. Bengali and Tamil showed a growth of 57% and 55% respectively as the second and third most rapidly growing foreign languages. Hindi, <keyword id="52565" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="urdu">Urdu</keyword> and Punjabi came in 5th, 6th and 7th with Gujarati coming in 9th. And while Telegu may be the <keyword id="6915899" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fastest-growing-foreign-language">fastest growing foreign language</keyword>, Hindi is the still most commonly spoken language of Indian-origin with 863,077 people. It’s also interesting to note that the overall growth in the number of people speaking foreign languages in the United States has grown by 12%. That being said, that are instances of languages like German, Polish and Italian having recorded negative growth. The numbers game According to data <a href="https://esa.un.org/miggmgprofiles/indicators/files/India.pdf">collected</a> by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, United States has normally been the most popular or the second most popular destination for Indian migrants. This is especially true for students pursuing higher education. And, a report by Quartz points out that the largest number of engineers sent from India to the United States were from the Telugu-speaking city of Hyderabad. In fact, India has the second-highest number of students going abroad for studies, after China. And it’s not just the United States. India consistently <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/world/india-tops-list-of-migrants-living-abroad-at-17-million-un/article9996244.ece">records</a> the largest number of citizens living abroad. In 2017, that number was at 17 million.
