"This market will be driven higher by the policy prospect of deregulation in DC," Emanuel wrote in a Wednesday note.Emanuel says Trump will likely act fast to enact his policies when he re-enters the White House. Things like deregulation and corporate tax cuts will boost business activity and allow stocks to surge, he said."Exuberance lies ahead; President-Elect Trump will move fast on policy initiatives, and stocks will move fast in response."The bull market's two-year run has been driven by strong growth from mega-cap tech stocks, and high valuations will rise even higher, he said. The observation, which is based on 283 open-ended equity diversified funds, cited that 39 per cent of these funds have outperformed their respective benchmarks over the past month, ending July 31st, 2024, The cumulative total of funds that outperformed stood at 109 during the month ending July 2024 (one month). About 24 per cent of schemes outperformed under the large and mid-cap funds, of which 29 were observed. Under the multi-cap funds about 40 per cent of schemes outperformed, whereas in the flexi-cap funds, the percentage of schemes outperforming was 33 per cent. Going further, about 38 per cent of schemes under the midcap outperformed. Interestingly, the data observed that not a single scheme in small-cap funds manages to outperform their respective benchmarks. According to the observations made by L Wealth Management, Value Contra Div Yield Funds was the best-performing category, where 78 per cent of the schemes outperformed the benchmark. It was followed by schemes of large-cap funds and multi-cap funds, which outperformed their respective benchmarks by 58 per cent and 40 per cent respectively, during July 2024. Markets regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Sebi" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Sebi">SEBI</keyword> has asked the <keyword id="20677983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-industry" source="keywords">mutual fund industry</keyword> to proactively conduct stress tests, a key component of <keyword id="20383727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="risk-management" source="keywords">risk management</keyword> for the financial sector, which will help strengthen the ecosystem, its whole-time member Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan said on Friday. The regulator's stress testing emphasizes the need to assess and manage liquidity risks, especially in small and midcap equity schemes. Speaking at a mutual fund event, Gopalakrishnan highlighted the importance of modelling stress scenarios not just for individual schemes or fund houses, but for the entire mutual fund ecosystem. "It is also important to model stress scenarios for the entire composite mutual fund ecosystem. I would strongly encourage the industry and <keyword id="20090036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AMFI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="AMFI" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="AMFI">AMFI</keyword> to take the lead and proactively conduct objective and credible industry wide stress tests. themselves," Gopalakrishnan said. He also emphasized the need to find better ways to communicate the risks associated with different mutual fund schemes. The SEBI official mentioned that while the current risk measurement system is straightforward and has had a significant impact, it doesn't fully capture the differences in risks among various investment schemes. According to him, many schemes are just labelled as high risk, even though they have different kinds of risks. The goal is to improve this system to better reflect those differences, while keeping it simple and easy to understand. One possible approach is to consider the portfolio's volatility and liquidity from stress tests to give a clearer picture. "While ensuring simplicity and ease of understanding remains a key objective, perhaps the underlying volatility of the portfolio along with the liquidity of the portfolio from stress tests could be used to provide better colour all around," he added. This comes at a time when the holdings of mutual funds by <keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-institutional-investors" source="keywords">Domestic Institutional Investors</keyword> (DIIs) and individuals have risen from about 54.3% of free float of all mid cap and small cap companies, as of March 2020 to 60.6% as of March 2024. Several fund houses have proactively stopped lump sum investments in some small-cap schemes and also capped the amount that can be invested through <keyword id="20675888" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="systematic-investment-plan" source="keywords">Systematic Investment Plan</keyword> (SIP) into small-cap schemes. He also highlighted the potential mismatch between the demand for paper and the supply of fresh paper coming into the ecosystem. Gopalakrishnan said the industry can make more progress in streamlining operations and improving efficiency for investors. "At a time when instantaneous fund transfers have become ubiquitous in our country, perhaps we should look to improve our internal processes and the security settlement ecosystem, to ensure that funds are passed on to investors on the day of the settlement itself, rather than a day after or two days after," he added. Over the last few years, the mutual fund industry has made impressive strides, and is now playing a crucial role in channeling financial savings towards risk capital formation. This was driven by stable macros, increased formalization, robust corporate earnings, digitisation and user friendly access. Moreover, the number of mutual fund investors has grown significantly from about 2 crore as of March 2019 to nearly 4.7 crore as of June 2024, an impressive compounded annual growth rate of 18% during that period. Gopalakrishnan mentioned that several exciting initiatives are in the works, developed with input from all stakeholders. These include a proposed low-ticket SIP, further breaking down regular SIPs into smaller, more accessible units (sachetisation and tokenization), and the introduction of "mutual funds lite" regulations. These new regulations will simplify rules for passively managed funds, reducing the compliance burden and encouraging competition and innovation. Additionally, a new class of higher-risk schemes is proposed for investors with a greater capacity to handle risk.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The recent surge in small-cap stocks appears unsustainable, according to Capital Economics' John Higgins.</li><li>Higgins said the fact that large-cap stocks are still near record highs suggests no rotation has taken place.</li></ul>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-rally-broadens-small-caps-another-win-for-bulls-2024-7">rapid and historic rally in small-cap stocks</a> over the past week is unsustainable.That's according to Capital Economics' chief market economist John Higgins, who said in a note on Wednesday that the relative outperformance of small-cap stocks compared to large-cap stocks is likely to be short-lived."A recent surge in the Russell 2000 after the US CPI report for June was published last week has prompted claims that we are entering the initial stage of a secular rotation into US small-cap stocks. We are not convinced," Higgins said.First, Higgins said the recent market action shouldn't be thought of as a rotation.A rotation implies that investors are selling large-cap stocks and using those proceeds to buy small-caps. But while large-caps have sat out the rally over the past week, they are still just a few percentage points below all-time highs."We would need to see more evidence of a sell-off in 'big tech' to be convinced that a rotation into small-cap stocks out of their larger counterparts was well and truly underway," Higgins said.Higgins made those comments while acknowledging <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-price-tighter-china-trade-restrictions-tsm-asml-nvda-2024-7">the sharp decline in mega-cap tech stocks on Wednesday,</a> sparked by comments from former President Donald Trump and the Biden administration considering restrictions on certain semiconductor companies.Much of the rally in small-cap stocks has been driven by the expectation that the Federal Reserve will soon lower interest rates.But Higgins isn't buying that argument either, noting that large-cap stocks outperformed their small-cap peers when the Fed cut interest rates in the mid-1990s, as well as when they cut interest rates in 2009 and 2019."We anticipate a bubble in the stock market continuing to inflate amid hype around AI, like one did in the second half of the 1990s around the internet. Back then, small-cap stocks generally underperformed their large-cap peers until mid-1999," Higgins said.Finally, Higgins highlighted that the biggest factor driving stock market performance is earnings, and there's no sign yet that small-cap stocks are going to overtake large-cap stocks in terms of earnings growth."It remains to be seen whether big tech firms will fail in general to continue to beat analysts' lofty expectations for their earnings," Higgins said.The first round of second-quarter earnings results for the mega-cap tech companies are set to drop next week with reports from Tesla and Alphabet.While Higgins isn't yet buying into the small-cap stock rally, Fundstrat's Tom Lee is.The strategist <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/small-caps-russell-2000-rally-outlook-sp500-selloff-fundstrat-tech-2024-7">told clients on Tuesday that he still sees a 40% rally occurring</a> in small-cap stocks after they've largely sat out the broader stock market rally this year."We have small caps even more oversold and valuations — whether you look at medium P/E, which is now at 10 times 2025 earnings — even lower," Fundstrat's Tom Lee told <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyHto5WWQ0k">CNBC</a>. "So we think that this move could be something like 10 weeks and as much as 40%. So I think it is just starting."
