Ellyn Briggs, the brands analyst who authored the report, told BI that Gen Z are "big spenders" who aren't afraid to splash out on whatever hot, new item is making the rounds on TikTok.In fact, US consumers between the ages of 24 and 38 have the most discretionary spending power of all age groups, famed businesswoman Meredith Whitney wrote in an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ft.com/content/ef573c85-bb31-4f1b-88e6-553130ff3245">op-ed for the Financial Times</a>, citing American Express data.One major reason for that: many still live at home with their parents "and likely pay very little" in expenses like heating, insurance, or utilities, she wrote. If an item is on the expensive side, there will be dupe options for less.But what fits into the "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-clothing-office-siren-business-casual-fashion-2024-8">office siren,</a>" "mob wife," or "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roundup-tiktok-style-trends-barbiecore-goblincore-2022-12#still-trending-normcore-is-around-for-the-long-haul-2">normcore</a>" aesthetic one minute is soon outdated, and it's time to buy whatever's next. These things that go out of fashion just as soon as they come in are known as micro-trends."It's not sustainable for your money, it's not sustainable for your mental health, and it's not sustainable for our environment," Ylva Baeckström, a psychotherapist and senior lecturer in finance at King's Business School in London, told Business Insider."It all adds up, and it becomes extremely stressful."<h2 id="4ec37053-21a8-4502-8907-7fa409b94078">'The perfect profitability storm'</h2>Fast fashion, social media, and retailers like Shein have together created "the perfect profitability storm for the businesses and influencers using them," said Anthony Miyazaki, a marketing professor at Florida International University."It's like watching a natural symbiosis where fast fashion producers drop the products, influencers create the buzz, TikTok and Instagram facilitate the sales, and the buyers swarm the marketplace," Miyazaki said.TikTok and Instagram did not respond to requests for comment.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-sell-on-tiktok-shop">TikTok Shop,</a> the app's e-commerce platform, has grown to more than 500,000 US-based sellers in eight months since launching, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/transparency/en-us/shop-safety-2023-2/">according to the company's Safety Report</a> released in April. That has benefited the likes of the Chinese company Shein, which adds thousands of items to its store each day. It was valued at $66 billion in its latest fundraising round — an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessofapps.com/data/shein-statistics/">increase from $5 billion</a> in 2019. (Shein also did not respond to a comment request.)The power of influencers and algorithms on spending is huge. Elysia Berman, a content creator who makes videos about fashion, told BI she is paying off a large amount of credit card debt which she built up due to a shopping addiction fueled by social media.At the start of this year, Berman owed close to $48,000 and has cut that almost in half thanks to her commitment to the "no buy year" — a trend focused on reducing spending.Berman said she believes the cycle of micro-trends is a big problem, saying she spent a lot on clothes she didn't even like or wear."Micro-trends are meaningless without an understanding of your personal style," Berman said. "If you do not know yourself and your style, you are at risk of being caught up in the endless pursuit of trendiness and overspending."<h2 id="5d5c31f2-aa71-4fd0-a913-c6e69c3e5c01">Doom-spend or save?</h2>Along with social media algorithms, micro-trends are being fueled by the cycle of<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shoppers-are-doom-spending-to-cope-with-financial-stress-2023-11"> doom spending:</a> buying unnecessary stuff to feel better.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://newsroom.transunion.com/q2-2024-ciir/">Per an analysis from the credit reporting agency TransUnion</a>, the average debt per borrower in Q2 of 2024 in the US is $6,329 — an increase from $5,947 in Q2 last year.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/a-better-way-of-understanding-the-u-s-consumer-decomposing-retail-spending-by-household-income-20241011.html">Economists at the Federal Reserve</a> earlier this month found that inflation-adjusted spending on retail goods was up across the board compared to 2018.Baeckström, the finance lecturer, said impulse buying is all about feeling control "when everything else is out of control.""You might as well splash out on something that makes you feel better right now because it's hard to think about the long term when things are feeling a bit hopeless," she said.Dan Pallesen, a licensed clinical psychologist and financial advisor, told BI that following trends is part of being human."For our ancestors, keeping up with trends was a matter of life or death," he said. This was because not being part of the in-group put us at risk of rejection and thus in danger to the elements and predators."Fast forward to today, most of us are not in physical danger if we are not part of the in-group, but we still carry the same brain above our shoulders as those ancestors," Pallesen said.<h2 id="5c649480-8542-454e-bf5f-d4055e821462">A growing problem</h2>Most people can afford a few trendy pieces. But repeated, unconscious spending can soon snowball.Bill Ryze, a certified chartered financial consultant and a board advisor at the financial-services platform Fiona, told BI that frequent impulsive purchases can lead to maxed-out credit cards and high-interest debt."Continuous spending can lead to accumulating debt that can become overwhelming," Ryze said, "which could impact mental health and overall well-being."Julie Guntrip, the head of financial wellness at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/banking/jenius-bank-review">Jenius Bank</a>, said young people are particularly susceptible, especially when they follow influencers who make a living getting others to buy things."While it's easy to get caught up in what others are doing, it's important to remember that not everything is as it seems on social media," she said.Guntrip recommended making a budget and developing a "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deinfluencing-is-the-anti-influencer-trend-rich-with-paradoxes-2023-1">de-influencing</a>" mindset — focusing on not buying things and the dopamine hit of saving money rather than spending it needlessly.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-micro-spending-on-concert-tickets-to-collectibles-2024-10">Gen Z's interest in micro-spending</a> could signify a shift — spending small amounts on collectibles and items that reflect their personal tastes and don't break the bank."Make it trendy not to buy things," Baeckström said. "Make it trendy to think about the sustainability of your consumption patterns, for you, and for the environment, and, of course, for your money."

Micro-trends are taking over social media, and keeping up can be really expensive

Shares of the company have crashed 79% from their peak, plummeting further last week after accounting firm EY said it would resign as the company's auditor. "We are resigning due to information that has recently come to our attention which has led us to no longer be able to rely on management's and the Audit Committee's representations and to be unwilling to be associated with the financial statements prepared by management," the accounting firm said in a <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001375365/5fac8065-2e9b-4894-a162-41aebeaedf55.pdf">filing</a>.Super Micro Computer failed to file financial statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission that were originally due in August. Per Nasdaq rules, the company has until November 20 to submit a plan to the exchange for it to get back into compliance. If approved, it could push the deadline to early next year. Shares of Super Micro Computer dropped 2% on Tuesday, extending its weeklong decline to 48%. The stock was trading at about $26.20 around noon ET. With such a negative overhang for the stock, Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson said investors probably won't care about its quarterly results until key questions are answered."We believe questions around EY's decision, SMCI's ability to file its 10K, and a reported DOJ investigation will take precedence over SMCI's quarterly report and guide," Bryson said in a note on Monday."It arguably appears to be an uphill battle for SMCI to remain listed at this point," he added, noting EY's desire to distance itself from financial statements prepared by the company's management. This isn't the first time Super Micro Computer investors faced delisting concerns.In August 2018, the company <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ir.supermicro.com/news/news-details/2018/Supermicro-Announces-Suspension-of-Trading-of-Common-Stock-on-Nasdaq-and-its-Intention-to-Appeal/default.aspx">announced a suspension of trading in its stock</a> after it was delisted from the Nasdaq for failing to file its financial reports in a timely manner.Bryson said that another question for Super Micro Computer is whether its financial accounting woes could impact its underlying business of selling server racks filled with Nvidia's most powerful AI-enabled GPU chips."We have had mixed feedback regarding whether concerns around SMCI late filing and/or the reported DOJ investigation might be impacting customer's decisions," Bryson said.Wedbush rates Super Micro Computer at "Neutral" with a $32 price target.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Anaïs Felt took a "micro-retirement" back in March from her Silicon Valley tech job.</li><li>The time off on her extended leave healed her burnout and changed her relationship to work, she said.</li></ul>Anaïs Felt was exhausted at the start of the year.As a senior product manager at a Silicon Valley tech firm, Felt, 31, commuted an hour to and from her home in San Francisco each day. Her hours in the office on top of a two-hour commute were a stark contrast to the work-life balance she had when she worked remotely during the pandemic."I would come home and be so exhausted that I would just lay on the couch to recuperate, eat dinner, and then go to bed," she said of her routine. "I didn't have the energy to go for a run or spend time with my partner or laugh."It wasn't just the commute wearing on Felt. She told Business Insider that she was also finding work itself more stressful, which came as a surprise to her being 10 years into her career in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktoker-sparked-conversation-not-able-to-leave-work-early-2024-3">corporate America.</a>"I was crying a lot," she said. "I had a harder time moving through difficult situations at work."Felt decided to meet with a career coach, who quickly "diagnosed" her with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burnout-is-now-a-clinical-syndrome-2019-5">burnout</a>, a syndrome due to "chronic workplace stress."The diagnosis was a welcome confirmation since Felt recognized the symptoms after reading "Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle" by Emily and Amelia Nagoski and Mckinsey's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/women-in-the-workplace-2023">2023 Women in the Workplace</a> report. She knew experience wasn't uncommon in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mental-health-crisis-great-resignation-tech-industry-silicon-valley-2022-4"> Silicon Valley, particularly for women.</a>Rather than trying to power through her stress or leave tech altogether, Felt decided to take what she called a micro-retirement — or extended break — to address her burnout.<h2 id="eda9f511-a527-4394-ad17-9bf9f3039ece">Taking a break</h2>Felt spent her 20s prioritizing her career, she told BI. She was the first person in her family to attend college, starting her first business when she was an undergrad at Hope College in Michigan. After she graduated from the liberal arts college, her early adult years solely revolved around her job."I was brought up in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rise-and-fall-girl-boss-analysis-2020-7">girlboss</a> era," she said. "I worked extremely hard and was high-achieving."But a decade later as Felt came to terms with her burnout and thought about what she wanted out of the next phase of her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-big-tech-dream-job-pay-perks-not-worth-it-2024-5">career</a>, she decided she needed to take a break from work before moving forward."It felt like it would be good for me — but also good for my future employer — if I went into my next role feeling fully energized and feeling conviction in that next step," she said.Felt <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-job-travel-after-stress-burnout-at-big-tech-company-2024-8">quit her job</a> in March with the intention of taking up to a year off, thinking of her break as a micro-retirement or a sabbatical. "It's intentional breaks throughout my career where I can just take time to enjoy and live life and recharge for my next role," she said of her definition of micro-retirement. "I'm gonna plan to keep doing this throughout my career every five to 10 years instead of deferring all of it to the end of my career."A September <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@anaisfelt/video/7419143704482499882">video</a> Felt made about her micro-retirement started a conversation on TikTok, garnering over 189,000 views and racking up more than 500 comments as of Tuesday.<h2 id="8bd54dbe-99f3-4208-b09e-d9ef2d144737">Prepping for her micro-retirement</h2>Felt said she properly planned to be able to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ex-goldman-sachs-wealth-advisor-money-advice-ultrawealthy-2024-10">afford a year off</a> before putting in her notice. She made a habit of saving as she settled into her career. The former senior product manager did not share her salary at her most recent job with BI, but <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.levels.fyi/t/product-manager?countryId=254&amp;country=254&amp;search=senior+product+manager">according to Levels.FYI</a>, which collects salary information for tech professionals, the median salary for a product manager was $211,000 as of October.Felt also said she did an audit of her spending before leaving her full time position. "That was really helpful because it helped me pare back in some areas where the spending was more unnecessary," she said. "It improved my relationship with money, and it's made me a bit more diligent with my finances."Felt took care of some regular medical expenses before leaving her job as well, like ordering contacts for the year and going to the dentist. Once she left her company, she joined her partner's health insurance.By March, she was ready for her micro-retirement.<h2 id="d8bbaaaf-2619-4847-a1be-eda023b4faa4">Felt needed more rest than she realized</h2>Felt told BI that she initially planned to take a big trip once she left her job. But <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-to-quit-six-figure-job-for-mental-health">burnout</a> hit her "like a brick wall" once she actually started micro-retirement."I think the first couple of weeks I actually had to accept the fact that I was burned out," she said. "I needed to just sit and relax and rest."Felt said she took it easy for a month before the "burnout cloud" started to lift."I'm so glad that I just sat down for a month because that equipped me to move into the next phase of my micro-retirement, which was doing things I loved and cared about without the excessive burnout," she said.Every day of Felt's micro-retirement looks slightly different, though she tries to stick to a schedule Monday through Friday to give herself some structure. Some days, Felt creates content on TikTok that shows peeks into her life through outfit-of-the-day videos or snippets of her home decor. On other days, she spends her time with her dog or maintains her house. Felt also spends time volunteering in her community and participating in mentorship work."I'm not getting paid for those things, but they're just really energizing because they're connected to purpose and meaning that really resonates with me and my value system," she said.Six months after she left her job, Felt said her mental health has improved, and her burnout is gone.<h2 id="00b03381-aadd-4ccc-ab9d-e412bf96c584">Micro-retirement has changed the way Felt sees her future</h2>Felt told BI that her extended break from work has given her the time and mental space to reevaluate what she wants out of her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quitting-corporate-job-content-creator-reseller-side-hustles-retire-early-2024-7">career</a>. She said "work-life balance and scheduling flexibility" will be a priority moving forward since her community has become more important, and she wants to be a mom someday."Maybe I'll work from home and continue on the corporate path, or maybe I'll start my own business," she said. "There's so much life to be lived outside of my office desk, and life really starts to get richer when it's more diversified."Felt started taking informational interviews six months into her micro-retirement. Still, she doesn't see herself seriously applying for roles until January 2025, partly because she wants to<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/egg-freezing-fertility-clinics-targeting-gen-z-women-high-cost-2024-6"> freeze her eggs</a> before returning to a full time position.Felt wants others female employees to know they don't have to sacrifice their personal lives for professional success."You can still be high achieving and successful as a woman and intentionally choose work-life balance," she said, "there needs to be harmony there."

Under this campaign, the first phase is set to start on Friday, July 19, in Jaipur. According to the Director of <keyword id="6358354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSME" source="Orion">MSME</keyword>, <keyword id="657556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ankita-Pandey" source="Orion">Ankita Pandey</keyword>, around 600 women entrepreneurs in the state will be participating in the event, which will start at the <keyword id="14599491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan-International-Centre" source="Orion">Rajasthan International Centre</keyword> today. Pandey said that the initiative is being introduced to provide a formal education for women operating commercial enterprises, along with creating awareness among them of all the <keyword id="7776964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSME-schemes" source="Orion">MSME schemes</keyword> they can utilise. "The initiative is to introduce formal education for the women who operate commercial enterprises, along with creating awareness among them to utilise all the MSME schemes,' she said. Pandey further mentioned that women can register at different stalls at the centre based on the skills they require to develop to run an enterprise, including training, capacity building, how to make full use of their capital, how to get market access, how to develop their product, and also how to do digital marketing. She also mentioned that this will not be a one-day event and that workshops will be organised at local MSMEs for further development. Super Micro stock declined 5% Tuesday morning, though shares are up 89% year-to-date.The stock was trading at $553 a share at midday Wednesday, paring its loss to about 1.5%. "Our 3-month investigation, which included interviews with former senior employees and industry experts as well as a review of litigation records, international corporate and customs records, found glaring accounting red flags, evidence of undisclosed related party transactions, sanctions and export control failures, and customer issues," Hindenburg wrote.Shortly after paying a $17.5 million fine to the SEC, Super Micro began to re-hire executives who were "directly involved in the accounting scandal," the report said, citing legal records and talks with former insiders.Three senior employees involved with the accounting scandals later returned to the firm as a board member, the vice president of business development, and a close consultant to the CEO, according to Hindenburg. Howard Hideshima, Super Micro's former CFO, was also hired last year by a "key related party" owned by the brother of Super Micro's CEO, the report said.Workers within the company said they faced pressure to meet high sales quotas, even after the company was charged by regulators. The high quotas incentivized some workers to issue "partial shipments" or ship defective products by the end of the quarter, former employees told the research firm.Super Micro's business relationships also appear "oddly circular," Hindenburg said, noting that the company sold parts to various entities, who then assembled them and sold them back to Super Micro.Some of Super Micro's partners appeared to do little business outside their relationship with Super Micro. Ablecom, one such partner, exported 99.8% of its product in the US to Super Micro, while Compuware, another partner, exported 99.7% of its product to Super Micro, the report said.Hindenburg also said Super Micro also ramped up exports to Russia after Moscow invaded Ukraine, which violated US sanctions.Hindenburg highlighted quality concerns among Super Micro's customers, some of whom have turned to alternative suppliers. Tesla and CoreWeave, two of Super Micro's major customers, have inked high-profile deals with Dell over the past year, the firm noted.Digital Ocean, one cloud provider that worked with Super Micro, also took its business to Dell after the company experienced "service issues," Hindenburg said, with one Digital Ocean employee telling the firm its relationship with SuperMicro was a "train wreck of sorts."Former employees at Genesis Cloud, a current partner of Super Micro, also described the firms' relationship as "catastrophic.""All told, we believe Super Micro is a serial recidivist. I own a 628 square foot home that I purchased for $235,000 and have a 30-year fixed mortgage with a monthly payment of $2,150.South Park Cottages afforded me the opportunity to buy my first home sooner than planned — it was the official stamp for adulthood.<h2>It's nice to have a space of my own</h2>When I applied, the community was still being developed (I saw my home's construction framing and trusted the developer). It gave me an opportunity to save up more money.Before I was even considered for a home at South Park Cottages, I had to be pre-approved for the full loan amount of the home.I chose South Park Cottages' preferred lender, along with a preferred closing attorney.The lending process for the tiny home worked like a traditional mortgage, requiring the same paperwork: The lender wanted to see my income and bank statements from the past two years to make sure I had consistent work.When I was approved, I put down a $17,500 deposit. It's exciting to know I can learn from people around me who are going through similar life phases.One of my favorite things about the village is that it's really community oriented; we're all very tight knit. Neighbors look out for neighbors.We usually eat on our patios or in front of our homes and wave to each other. There's also communal areas in the village like a garden and a fire pit, where residents regularly have cookouts. And residents celebrate a lot of housewarmings as well.When you look at the community, it's like something you've never seen before in Atlanta and I love that.<h2>I plan to buy another home in the future</h2>South Park Cottages in more ways than one way changed my life.When I moved back to Georgia, getting an apartment was never going to be part of the plan; I was determined that my next step had to be homeownership.But the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-housing-market-home-prices-mortgage-rates-home-affordability-2024-4#17-atlanta-georgia-17">home prices in Atlanta have increased</a> dramatically over the past few years. When I was first looking for homes in the area, there were hardly any newly built ones that were affordable.
