McCormick, an emergency medicine physician, will face Democrat Bob Christian in November.  </p><p><strong>7th Congressional District:</strong></p><p><keyword id="14254726" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mark-gonsalves" source="Orion">Mark Gonsalves</keyword> defeated <keyword id="14254725" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="michael-corbin" source="Orion">Michael Corbin</keyword> to clinch the Republican nomination in Georgia's 7th Congressional District in metro Atlanta. Gonsalves, a businessman, will face Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath in November. </p><p>In the Republican primary, Gonsalves, with 26.2% of the vote trailed behind Corbin, a telecommunications professional, who received 41.4% of the vote. The district is considered a safe seat for Democrats, and McBath is expected to win.   </p><p><strong>10th Congressional District:</strong></p><p>Another Trump-endorsed candidate, Rep. Vernon Jones, was solidly defeated by Mike Collins in a runoff race to win the safely-Republican 10th Congressional District seat vacated by Rep. Jody Hice, who ran for Georgia secretary of state and lost. </p><p>In November, Collins will face Tabitha Johnson-Green, who defeated Jessica Allison Fore in Tuesday night's Democratic runoff election. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Disney Channel Games" ended 15 summers ago after a three-season run from 2006 to 2008.</li><li>In the series, Disney Channel stars competed in various challenges to win the annual color war.</li></ul><p><em>Editor's note: The following interviews were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14.</em></p><p>In 2006, Disney Channel was at the top of its game.</p><p>The network had a major hit on its hands when <a href="https://www.insider.com/high-school-musical-interesting-details-you-never-got">"High School Musical"</a> premiered in January, and shows like "Hannah Montana" and "The Suite Life of Zack &amp; Cody" were airing new episodes weekly. Its young stars — including Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, and Vanessa Hudgens — were becoming household names.</p><p>With a captivated young audience, the network gathered its young Hollywood talent for what it hoped would be a summertime must-watch: "Disney Channel Games."</p><p>The producer Art Spigel's reality-competition series ran for three seasons, from 2006 to 2008. The games divided the young actors from the<a href="https://www.insider.com/best-disney-channel-original-movies-after-watching-all-2021-9"> Disney Channel universe</a> into color-coded teams and challenged them to complete obstacle courses, hamster-ball relay races, and more.</p><p>The competitors are now full-fledged adults; some are still in the spotlight, and others are far from it. But the short-lived program remains a time capsule of a <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-best-disney-channel-original-movies-ranked-2019-7">different era of Disney Channel</a> and reality TV.</p><p>Fifteen years after the games ended, Insider spoke with showrunners, participants, and others about how the games came together and their lasting impact.</p><h2>'Disney Channel Games' allowed fans to see their favorite stars interacting together</h2><div type="image" title="jason earles in red outfit with arm raised carrying flag in front of obstacle course at the disney channel games in 2007" height="1987" width="2649" msid="103142313" hostid="261"></div><p>Reality TV was <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/05/09/the-reality-principle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">picking up speed by the new millennium</a>, with shows like MTV's "The Real World" and ABC's "The Bachelor" drawing large audiences. Disney Channel wanted in on the reality TV craze.</p><p>"MTV had switched from showing videos to mainly showing reality programs, and a lot of them were challenge-based. So it was definitely on our mind that we wanted to be competitive with that type of programming," Skot Bright, an executive producer of the 2007 and 2008 seasons of "Disney Channel Games," told Insider.</p><p>The channel had dabbled in reality TV with "Bug Juice," which followed non-famous teens to summer camps around the US and aired in 1998. But by 2006, Disney Channel had an advantage its competitors didn't: a roster of teen megastars.</p><p>"Disney Channel Games" gave audiences the rare chance to see stars like Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale, Zac Efron, and Corbin Bleu as themselves, all in one place.</p><h2>Each year the games got bigger — and the stakes got higher</h2><p>Disney Channel filmed the premiere 2006 games in Santa Clarita, California, with three teams: red, blue, and green. Competitors tested their skills in inflatable obstacle courses; egg tosses; Rock, Paper, Scissors; Simon Says; and more.</p><p>Bright said that as the series evolved, the games "had to be bigger," in terms of both their scale and their filming location.</p><p>After the first season, the show moved from Santa Clarita to the massive fields of the<a href="https://www.espnwwos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> ESPN Wide World of Sports</a> complex in Orlando, Florida, and expanded to feature Disney Channel stars from not just the US but around the world.</p><div type="image" title="Roger Gonzalez-Garca wearing blue sweatsuit with hand out to high-five fans and flag raised in other hand at disney channel games in 2007" height="1987" width="2649" msid="103142315" hostid="261"></div><p>The games included more complicated events, like kart racing and soccer with a giant ball. Viewers at home could win points for the stars by playing online games.</p><p>By 2008, there were four teams: the Inferno, the Lightning, the Cyclones, and the Comets. As important as the competition was, half the fun was watching the Disney Channel stars interact.</p><p>Director Linda Mendoza said they wanted it to feel organic, capturing moments like real-life best friends Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez checking their lipstick ahead of the games or watching the teens hang out in their color-coded team tents with inflatable furniture between rounds. </p><p>Bright said the producers spent a lot of time figuring out the teams, considering the stars' personalities and ensuring a good mixture of international participants. "It helped amp up the rivalry and the competitiveness of it," Bright said.</p><p>Part of building up the games was adding a charity component. The first year, the winning team walked away with a trophy and each member received a medal. The following two years, each of the four teams also donated $25,000 to a partner charity.</p><h2>Stars got to know each other through the games — they just had to score an invite</h2><p>To make the games a can't-miss event, the channel needed the buzziest stars to compete.</p><p>Actors from originals like "High School Musical," "That's So Raven," and "Hannah Montana" got their chance to shine. The "Suite Life of Zack &amp; Cody" actors Brian Stepanek and Phill Lewis shared host duties for the first two years. (Stepanek hosted solo in 2008.)</p><p>Monique Coleman said she and Jason Earles, her "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" costar, recently laughed about how competitive they got during the games. "We were ridiculous," she said. "And we were older than everybody and did not care."</p><p>Ambra Lo Faro, who appeared on Disney Channel Italy's "Quelli dell'Intervallo," said that while she was confident as a musician and singer, she knew she was "the worst sports player ever" — so she wasn't expecting her "Disney Channel Games" invite.</p><p>"Once they asked me to be part of these games, I told them, 'Are you sure?'" she recalled.</p><div type="image" title="monique coleman in green smiling at the disney channel games 2007" height="1987" width="2649" msid="103142317" hostid="261"></div><p>After all, appearing on Disney Channel didn't automatically score an actor an invitation to compete.</p><p>Alyson Stoner said the network didn't ask them to participate until they appeared in <a href="https://www.insider.com/camp-rock-unique-cool-things-about-movie-interview-2021-7">"Camp Rock,"</a> a 2008 Disney Channel original movie. From 2002 to 2006 they appeared on "Mike's Super Short Show," an interstitial series that regularly played on Disney Channel but was owned by Buena Vista.</p><p>Stoner said they felt that their previous role "didn't make the cut in terms of hierarchy," but said when they finally did get the invite, they felt as if they'd "been affirmed as a special, exclusive, cool kid."</p><div type="image" title="yellow team at disney channel games 2007" height="1987" width="2649" msid="103142320" hostid="261"></div><p>The coveted invite wasn't just an opportunity to participate in the games — it was a ticket to a week filled with friends and <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-disney-world-private-tour-what-its-like-worth-it-2023">VIP access to the Disney parks</a>.</p><p>Actors competing in the 2007 and 2008 games stayed at <a href="https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/resorts/animal-kingdom-lodge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge</a>, a 15-minute drive from Magic Kingdom.</p><p>"It really turned into a camp-like experience where we were coming from all over and then suddenly we're here together and forming friendships," said Jason Dolley, a "Cory in the House" actor. "And the best thing was at the end of the day we got to go out and go to the parks together."</p><p>The stars received VIP treatment, with personal drivers who'd take them and their families from Space Mountain to the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster to the Tower of Terror.</p><p>"We immediately were spoiled because they really made it so magical," "High School Musical" star Corbin Bleu said. "We had a VIP tour guide for our family that would take us through the park and bring us to the front of the line."</p><p>Michael Seater, a star of "Life with Derek" who joined the games as a Canadian correspondent, recalled the "Suite Life" stars Dylan and <a href="https://www.insider.com/cool-facts-about-cole-sprouse-2019-6">Cole Sprouse</a> getting Space Mountain technicians to keep the ride open after hours.</p><p>"We're shooting out of the mountain into the fireworks," Seater said. "It was one of the craziest things."</p><h2>Disney Channel tapped rising pop stars to perform at the games' Olympics-inspired 'closing ceremonies' in 2007 and 2008</h2><p>There was no concert in the 2006 "Disney Channel Games" finale, but because many Disney Channel actors were also pursuing music careers, it was a no-brainer to have them perform at closing ceremonies in 2007 and 2008.</p><p>Hope Diamond, Disney Channel's former vice president of public relations, said that if the network was promoting an actor's singing career, it was "firing on all cylinders of entertainment." The strategy included playing the actor's music on Radio Disney, which was owned by Disney Branded Television, and giving them a slot to perform live at the games.</p><div type="image" title="miley cyrus performing at disney channel games as hannah montana in 2007 on stage with backup dancers behind her" height="2104" width="2813" msid="103142322" hostid="261"></div><p>The addition of music made the final ceremony bigger. In 2007, the Jonas Brothers took the stage to perform "Kids of the Future," and Cyrus sang "G.N.O. (Girl's Night Out)."</p><p>The following year, Cyrus returned for a live rendition of "See You Again," Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers sang the "Camp Rock" hit "This Is Me," Jordan Pruitt belted out "My Shoes," and The Cheetah Girls performed "One World."</p><p>Mendoza said that when the Jonas Brothers played in 2008, "it was like a sea of bouncing heads." She added, "It was the most phenomenal energy I think I've ever seen at a show."</p><p>"We were excited to have other artists that are on the channel be there to see us live in person, because that was one thing we didn't always get to go do," Sabrina Bryan, a member of The Cheetah Girls, said.</p><h2>Disney Channel nixed the games in 2008, but they remain a fond childhood memory for many people</h2><p>In 2009, a Disney representative <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170118054228/http://dev.popstaronline.com/disney-channel-gamescancelled/comment-page-1/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the website PopStar</a> that Disney Channel would shift its focus away from the games. </p><p>"Disney Channel Games" never returned to the air.</p><p>Though the games weren't on for long, they've stuck with people. For competitors, it was a chance to spend time with their friends.</p><p>"As you're inducted into the Disney Channel family, you end up doing Disney Channel interstitials, and you have different commercials," Bleu said. "At press events, you start to see all of the same people over and over again. And so those other TV shows become your family."</p><p>For fans, it let them feel closer to the young stars they loved.</p><div type="image" title="fans cheering at the disney channel games in 2007" height="2029" width="2706" msid="103142325" hostid="261"></div><p>"People still actually ask about it," Andrea Guasch, who joined the games from Disney Channel Spain, said. "It was so long ago. I just did an interview this morning, and they were like, 'Oh my God, and how was the "Disney Games"?' I was like, 'Really? After all these years?'"</p><p>The people interviewed for this article said they didn't know why the games ended after 2008, and a representative for Disney Channel did not respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Still, the games arrived at what many millennials consider the network's golden age. Maybe someday it'll join a slew of other nostalgia-fueled shows and be rebooted, but for now, "Disney Channel Games" remains firmly in the past.</p>

'Disney Channel Games' quietly ended 15 years ago, but it was the peak of Disney Channel's golden age

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The crime thriller "892" debuted at the <keyword id="12109384" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sundance-film-festival" source="Orion">Sundance film festival</keyword> on Friday.</li><li>Chris Witt, the film's editor, spoke to Insider about how <keyword id="13006663" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="john-boyega" source="Orion">John Boyega</keyword> saved the film's production.</li></ul><p>In March 2021, <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/03/jonathan-majors-to-star-in-marine-war-vet-feature-892-1234704924/">trade publications reported</a> that the actor Jonathan Majors was set to star as Brian Brown-Easley — a real-life former Marine who suffered from PTSD — in a drama titled "892."</p><p>The film — which was directed by first-time filmmaker Abi Damaris Corbin and debuted to acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival Friday evening — tells the story of Brown-Easley who walked into a Wells Fargo bank in 2017 with a supposed bomb in his rucksack and took several hostages after he was denied support payments from the department of veterans affairs. </p><p>By July, the production of "892" was in doubt after shifting production dates forced Majors to leave the project to shoot Marvel's "Ant-Man 3." However, days later, the small indie film was saved after "Star Wars" actor John Boyega signed on to star in Majors' place. </p><p>"We were contemplating just shutting down," Chris Witt, the film's editor, told Insider. "We found ourselves wondering if we were going to fall through, and then Boyega came through like Superman." </p><div type="image" title="A picture of John Boyega in the film &quot;892.&quot;" height="474" width="900" msid="89048631" hostid="261"></div><p>While the film was back in production thanks to Boyega, Witt said that he had been concerned about whether the British actor had had enough time to execute the role of Brown-Easley. Witt said he was most concerned about whether Boyega could convincingly replicate Brown-Easley's American accent. On the first day of production, however, Boyega quelled all concerns. </p><p>"It's no exaggeration. He freaking nailed this character from the page," Witt said of Boyega's performance.</p><p>"With Boyega, Brian came alive in a way that I always envisioned him. I felt like I was staring at footage of the real guy. In fact, he sounded like the real guy. We had a lot of 911 recordings of the real thing and you couldn't tell the difference, it was so Brian, in his performance. And I never heard a British accent."</p><p>Witt told Insider that he was left impressed by Boyega's ability to come on board with "so little time and just knock it out of the park," which he said left every person on-set "inspired." </p><p>"He gave his whole heart and soul," Witt said of Boyega. "He raised the bar and we all had to also put all of ourselves in, in order to do that footage justice."</p><p>The script for "892" was co-written by Corbin and the acclaimed British playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah who also co-wrote Spike Lee's upcoming feature about the invention of Viagra. The film also stars Nicole Beharie, Connie Britton, and the late actor Michael K Williams in his last big-screen performance. </p><div type="image" title="Michael K. Williams dressed in a brown suit" height="2647" width="3868" msid="89048632" hostid="261"></div><p>In the film, Williams plays a specialist police detective and Army veteran tasked with negotiating with Boyega's Brown-Easley during the standoff at the Wells Fargo bank. </p><p>"It was heartbreaking. He was truly a part of our team and our family on that project," Witt said of Michael K Williams's passing.</p><p>On the day Witt and Abi, the film's director, started editing the film together, Witt said that he discovered Williams had died.</p><p>"It just happened to be that we had already been working a week in post-production and we heard the news. We grieved for that part of that day. And we were just like, okay, we need to go back to work," he said. "It felt like the responsibility to craft the remaining embers of his creative voice. Of his work on earth, you know? It was tough. The responsibility to do that well was heavy."</p><p>One of the film's final images shows Williams at home following a deadly climax at the bank. The camera cuts in close on Williams's face and the audience watch him place a necklace with a Christian cross on a shelf. </p><p>"That close-up of that cross is the last take of his career. And it's a special, humbling, experience. He was a great man, a great artist," Witt added.</p><p>"892" is currently screening as part of Sundance 2022. There is currently no release date for the film. </p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>An Iraq War veteran skewered&#xa0;Donald Trump Wednesday after the presumptive Republican nominee made a confusing statement about soldiers stealing millions in cash while serving abroad.<p><span>"The idea that Trump would call out the integrity of those who answered the call of service and deployed to a war zone is repellant," the veteran, Corbin Reiff, <a href="https://twitter.com/CorbinReiff">posted to Twitter Wednesday</a>.</span></p><p><span>During a Tuesday night rally, Trump said the following:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Iraq, crooked as hell. How about bringing baskets of money - millions and millions of dollars - and handing it out? I want to know who were the soldiers that had that job, because I think they're living very well right now, whoever they may be.</p><p><a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2016/06/trump-us-troop-stole-millions-and-millions-in-iraq-224352#ixzz4BeZU3gsn">Politico noted</a>&#xa0;that Trump appeared to be&#xa0;referring to known examples&#xa0;of American soldiers taking portions of cash intended for reconstruction projects in Iraq, or otherwise engaging in theft or bribery.</p><p>The publication cited a 2015&#xa0;report by the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan group, which wrote "at least 115 enlisted personnel and military officers [were] convicted since 2005 of committing theft, bribery, and contract-rigging crimes valued at $52 million during their deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq."</p><p>Trump campaign&#xa0;communications director Hope Hicks said Trump was not referring to US soldiers in the comments.</p><p>"Mr. Trump was referring to Iraqi soldiers," she <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2016/06/trump-us-troop-stole-millions-and-millions-in-iraq-224352#ixzz4BeZU3gsn">wrote Politico</a> in an email.</p><p>Reiff, who now works as a music writer, didn't buy Hicks' answer.</p><p>"For this reason, and many more, he's proven that he's someone with neither the temperament, nor the character, to be Commander in Chief," he tweeted. "<span><span>Don't believe him when he says he's for Veterans. It's lip service entirely."</span></span></p><p><span><span>Reiff said he was working a post that had him handle some of the cash that Trump appeared to be referencing. Now that she's in the habit of paying more than the minimum, her debt is disappearing fast.</strong></li><li><a href="https://track.flexlinkspro.com/a.ashx?foid=1067927.141458181&amp;foc=2&amp;fot=9999&amp;fos=1&amp;fobs=bipfi_060819_credit-card-minimums">Credible can help you compare offers to consolidate and refinance your debt »</a></li></ul><p>I got my first credit card in 2003 as a college freshman when I opened up a Chase Bank account, and 16 years later, I'd racked up $23,000 in credit card debt over 10 credit cards.</p><p>For a long time, I hid the severity of my rapidly growing debt from myself, refusing to change my lifestyle because I wanted to keep up with everyone else.</p><p>But about five years ago, I woke up and started working towards financial independence and decided to pay off my credit cards. As of today, I've paid off over $8,229 of my $23,000 credit card debt, bringing the remaining amount to $14,771.</p><p>However, I've made the most progress in the past few months, thanks to change in my payment strategy that's made all the difference: I started paying more than the minimum.</p><p>I'm getting married next March, so this January I decided to step things up and make some serious changes in my strategy, in part because my fiancé has a great credit score, and I don't. This is embarrassing to admit, but until we formulated a plan to pay more than the minimum on each and every card, I never once paid more than the bare minimum. In fact, sometimes I ignored or forgot to make a payment at all.</p><p>I didn't realize what an impact that would make. In the months since I've started paying more than the minimum, I've reduced my debt by more than I had in the past few years combined.</p><p><em><strong><a href="https://track.flexlinkspro.com/a.ashx?foid=1067927.141458181&amp;foc=2&amp;fot=9999&amp;fos=1&amp;fobs=bipfi_060819_credit-card-minimums">Explore your options for debt refinancing with Credible »</a></strong></em></p><p>"Most credit card companies set minimums so low that the minimum monthly payments barely cover the interest accrued for the month," Corbin Blackwell, a financial planner with Betterment, told me when I asked about minimum payments. She continued: "By paying the minimum, borrowers end up paying much more interest over time and stay in debt longer. Making the minimum payments on time helps you avoid late fees but does very little to help you actually chip away at your credit card debt."</p><p>Due to a less-than-stellar credit score, I have high APRs: My five cards range from 21.74% to 29.99%, higher than the average credit card interest rate of 17.8%. Because they're so high, it's especially important that I pay off as much as I can.</p><p>Paying just the minimums meant I paid $364 a month. Now, after a close look at my budget, I've nearly tripled that amount to $915 a month.</p><p>Thanks to this strategy, I have now paid off nearly $5,000 in credit card debt in the past few months alone, eliminating the debt completely from five of my 10 cards. By the time my wedding day arrives, I will have put another $8,235 towards my credit card debt. That means that when we get married on March 8, 2020, I will be almost completely free of credit card debt.</p><p>For the first time in my life, my New Year's resolution stuck, and I've never felt so free, empowered, content, or inspired. In the most welcome reverse of my life, I now struggle to <em>only </em>put $915 of my monthly income towards my credit card debt. I wish I could pay more because I love seeing my credit card debt go down so fast and my credit score get higher.</p><p>In order to start the process of saying goodbye to my credit card debt, I first had to get out of denial. Only then could I start paying substantially more than the monthly minimum. I've paid off over $8,000 of credit card debt thanks to a simple habit change I didn't realize I needed to make

And many big marketers aren't ready, say ad experts.</strong></li><li><strong>While some data-versed marketers are investing to make sure they are compliant with the law, others seem paralyzed or over confident.</strong></li><li><strong>The law's implications are often seen as a bigger challenge for ad tech firms or publishers. </strong></li><li><strong>When it comes to using data for digital marketing, "no one's fine," said one high ranking ad executive.</strong></li></ul><p><a href="https://gdpr-info.eu/">GDPR</a> is coming, and many big brands are treating it the same way college kids treat finals: I'll cram the night before.</p><p>Some are even acting as if the looming European consumer privacy law called <span>General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)</span> doesn't even really apply to them. Regardless, GDRP goes into effect on May 25. And digital ad experts say that among marketers, the level of preparedness is all over the map.</p><p>Some are taking every precaution to make sure they've got all the permissions they need from consumers to use their data for marketing purposes, according to ad executives versed in GDRP's impact. And they're also taking measures to make sure it's easy for consumers to opt out of data collection.</p><p>But according to experts, a good number of marketers are either frozen like deers in headlights, putting off dealing with GDPR until the last minute, or simply feeling too confident, seeing the law somebody else's problem (think publishers or ad tech firms).</p><p>This seems particularly true among marketers who collect "first party data" from consumers, such as brands who sell items to consumers and gather basic information like people's shipping address to marketers who collect info from people whenever they mail someone a prize or a sample for participating in a survey or promotional sweepstakes.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Crownpeak</span></p><p class="caption">Adrian Newby, CTO Crownpeak</p></div><p></p></div></div>"We meet with executive teams [at big marketing firms], and you get a range of responses," said <span>Adrian</span><span> Newby, chief technology officer at <a href="https://www.crownpeak.com/customers/">Crownpeak, which provides web management technology for brands such as HP and Unilever.</a></span><span> </span></p><p>"[They go] from, 'this doesn't really effect us,' to 'does that effect us?'"</p><p>That's because these brands, generally speaking, ask for, and get permission for, consumer data. When people voluntarily sign up for an offering from a big marketer - whether that's an email newsletter promoting sales, or a chance to win a trip by mailing in a number of cereal box tops - that marketers often sees that consumer data as <em>theirs</em>. So many assume they are automatically GDPR compliant.</p><p>But it might not be so simple. </p><h2><span>GDPR is really complicated. So it's easy to put off dealing with it.</span></h2><p><span>Let's review what's going on with GDRP. Basically, any company that does business with European citizens will have to get consent from people to use their data, and make it very clear and easy to opt out of data collection.</span></p><p><span>Since most big digital <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> and ad tech companies and brands operate globally, they need to think about GDPR.</span></p><p><span>As Newby explained, GDPR puts companies into two buckets: you're either a "controller" or a "processor." AdExchanger breaks this down in great detail <a href="https://adexchanger.com/privacy/marketers-guide-gdpr/">here</a>.</span></p><ul><li><span>A controller is essentially the party that actually decides what data is collected and what is done with it.</span></li><li><span></span><span>A processor may use data for marketing purposes, but only within the limits of the controller's instructions. An example might be a payroll processing company that works with a big brand, <a href="https://medium.com/@sagarag/all-you-need-to-know-about-gdpr-controllers-and-processors-248200ef4126">according to this detailed GDPR Medium explainer.</a></span></li></ul><p><span><a href="https://digiday.com/media/publishers-feel-cornered-by-groupms-new-data-protection-contract-for-gdpr/">It seems as though ad agencies would prefer to consider themselves processors. </a></span><span>It's safer to be a processor, because controllers are the ones with primary responsibility and likely to get hit with big fines.</span></p><p>"Processors may only act on the controller's instructions," said Newby. "The penalties fall on the controller. But the processor has obligations too. Both parties need to put in contracts what does and doesn't fall on them. GDPR says there has to be consent or some other lawful basis for collecting personal data. A processor can land a controller in hot water if they go beyond their mandate and try and hide behind their status."</p><p>Here's where it can be challenging: sometime consumers have a relationship with a controller (like a website they visit), but their data is really in the hands of a processor (like a company delivering ads to that site that is using data to target that person). </p><p>"There is a tension in that relationship," said Newby. "A processor can screw over a controller, especially if they are a large organization trying to stick to their own business model. So both sides are trying to hedge their risk."</p><h2>Recent ad industry news may give some marketers a false sense of GDPR security. Or they just have expensive lawyers. </h2><p>Case in point: The ad tech company Drawbridge recently pulled its <a href="https://martechtoday.com/drawbridge-pulls-ad-business-europe-ahead-gdpr-212175">business out of Europe because of GDPR</a>. That's how serious the law is for tech firms that rely on consumer data.</p><p>Yet contrast that with recent headlines such as <a href="https://digiday.com/marketing/marketers-expect-gdpr/">Marketers don't expect the sky to fall with GDPR</a> and <a href="http://www.thedrum.com/news/2018/02/08/brands-respect-consumer-data-neednt-be-fazed-gdpr-says-matchs-uk-and-northern-europe">Brands that respect consumer data needn't be fazed by GDPR.</a></p><p>The truth is, "n<span style="font-weight: 400;">o one's fine," said one high ranking ad executive.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If that's true, there's a lot of money at stake, as fines for potential GDPR violations are no joke: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marketers-had-better-prepare-themselves-gdpr-to-comply-with-next-years-european-data-law-or-risk-major-fines-2017-9">they start at 10 million euros and go up to 4% of profits.</a></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thus, the digital data-focused startup <a href="https://www.mparticle.com/">mParticle</a> has been actively looking to get brands up to speed in recent months.</span></p><p>"Some brands are absolutely committed to staying ahead of this issue, and investing in the tech infrastructure," said mParticle CEO Michael Katz. "And some brands don't have their customer data strategy in order, including the tech to execute that strategy, but are going policy heavy and legaling up."</p><p><span>Newby said he's seeing a similar pattern. Many brands are blissfully ignorant when it comes to GDPR. And many others have hired lots of lawyers to cover themselves. Or at least make them feel covered.</span></p><p><span>"There are a couple of camps we are seeing," he said. "Some brands are thinking, '</span><span>getting consent is impractical, so I'll make a legal case for how I already operate. W</span><span>hat can I get away with and build a case that I'm doing something?'"</span></p><p><span>Still other brands are simply crossing their fingers. "I'll be happy</span><span> if someone else gets hit first," said Newby.</span></p><p>To be sure, companies like mParticle and Crownpeak would seem to have a vested interest in saying that GDPR requires lots of attention, since they peddle services designed to help digital media players get prepped. </p><p>The online ad industry has a long history of vendors - like say anti fraud tech firms - talking up just how big the problem is that only they can solve.</p><p>But given how complicated GDPR is (it has 99 articles), and the scrutiny in the marketing world over consumer data (see: Facebook) the law seems sure to have some impact.</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>NBC</span></p><p class="caption">"L.A. Think airlines with frequent flier programs, and banks. "They are taking it very seriously," he said.</p><p>But then there are marketers who have collected lots of consumer information for pure marketing programs. "U</span><span>sers can withdraw consent at any time."</span></p><p>Beyond fickle consumers, when marketers get information from consumers, sometimes they'll use that data in all sort of ways. But GDPR limits that. For example, "a bank may have your log in data," said <span>Newby</span>. "It doesn't mean they can use your credit card info and sell it to other companies."</p><h2>What's a brand to do about GDPR?</h2><p>Another big challenge for brands: large companies often have multiple divisions compiling consumer data at different times and in different ways. So even if the marketing group is thinking proactively about GDPR, that doesn't meant there's any centralized, coordinated effort in play.</p><p>Katz argues for companies to invest in tech to help pull all this together, and get out in front of the issue. "If your [organization's] policy doesn't have the supporting tech, you can't actually enforce anything....a lot still treat data reactively."</p><p>On the flip side, companies that get organized about consumer data may unlock new opportunities, Katz argued. </p><p>Regardless, the time is now to do something. "It's coming fast," Katz said.
