The latest addition to the brand’s number series the Redmi 12 looks promising on paper. It packs in a Qualcomm 4 Gen 2 SoC, along with the bells and whistles of today's 5G device. But does it stand true to the claims? And where does it sit in the market today, considering Redmi also has plenty of options in this price range. I will tell you in my full review. <br /><br /><strong>Price &amp; Availability</strong><br />Redmi 12 is available in 3 variants available at introductory prices. There is a variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage priced at ₹10,999. Then there is a variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage offered at ₹12,499. And finally, there is a variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage priced at ₹14,499. This distinction is crucial to prevent confusion among consumers.<br /><br />The phone adopts a minimalist approach to its design, featuring clean lines and a symmetrical appearance. To address this, using a protective case is recommended.<br /><br />Redmi has retained some defining characteristics of the Note series, starting with the placement of the headphone jack on the top. Although not everyone's favorite location, it's a valuable feature for those who use both Bluetooth and wired earphones.<br /><br />Another standout feature is the inclusion of an IR blaster, which is becoming rare in modern devices. Although not frequently utilized, it can prove to be helpful in emergencies, such as when TV remote batteries run out or when multiple devices need to be controlled with a single remote.<br /><br />The side-mounted fingerprint sensor is quick and efficient, allowing fast unlocking of the device. While some might prefer an under-display fingerprint sensor, its current placement remains a matter of personal preference and not a major issue.<br /><br />Regarding fit and finish, the buttons, like the volume rockers, boast excellent quality. It features a punch-hole screen design with noticeable bezels and a thicker chin, comparable to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/oneplus-nord-ce-3-lite-review/articleshow/99245498.cms">OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite</a> in terms of bezel size.<br /><br />The panel impresses with its brightness, reaching a peak of 900 nits, ensuring a well-lit and evenly illuminated experience indoors. However, outdoor visibility can be challenging, so it's best to disable auto-brightness and manually adjust it when needed.<br /><br />The display supports a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, providing smooth motion for all on-screen content. Reading articles or playing games on the Redmi 12 is a delight, thanks to the smooth and immersive experience it offers.<br /><br />Throughout my two-week experience with the Redmi 12, including a holiday week, it became my go-to device for content bingeing. It handles HD formats flawlessly on various OTT applications, and I particularly enjoyed watching Marvel's Secret Invasion on Disney+ Hotstar. The colors were slightly on the colder side, but it didn't significantly impact the overall experience. The sharp output allowed me to catch every detail, although the HDR performance could be further improved as black levels occasionally suffered.<br /><br />Regarding audio, the Redmi 12 has a single bottom-firing speaker setup, which is not its strongest aspect. At times, the audio output felt underwhelming, so I'd recommend using TWS earbuds or wired earphones to fully enjoy your content with improved sound quality.<br /><br /><strong>Software</strong><br />The Redmi 12 series comes with the advantage of shipping with Android 13 out of the box, along with the latest MiUi 13. This sets it apart from its Note siblings, which originally came with Android 12 upon release.<br /><br />Redmi 12 continues the brand's efforts to minimize bloatware, although there are some unwanted additions to the skin, such as the Opera browser and a suggested games tab. Thankfully, users have the option to uninstall some of these pre-installed apps. Considering the price point, the controlled bloatware on this device is commendable.<br /><br />The MiUi 13 on the Redmi 12 maintains the familiar and colorful animations we are accustomed to on Redmi devices. The user interface is designed to be accessible to a wide range of users, and it achieves this with its clean and straightforward layout.<br /><br />Customization options abound, offering a variety of wallpapers and themes to choose from. Personally, I prefer the stock skin as it looks the best to me. One common issue with third-party skins is their deviation from Google's layout, especially in areas like the drop-down menu. I find the big, chunky tiles of the Google skin layout easier to interact with and visually appealing. This observation isn't specific to Redmi but applies generally to various skins.The Asus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/asusrogphone6review/articleshow/95862437.cms">ROG Phone 6</a> stands out as a successful example of integrating these different skins seamlessly.<br /><br />The UI has proven to be stable throughout my experience, and I have not encountered any troublesome bugs. It's important to note that this is a brand-new device running on a stable UI and an established operating system.<br /><br /><strong>Performance<br />        <div type="image" title="Geekbench 6 score for Redmi 12 5G." msid="102252114" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Geekbench 6 score for Redmi 12 5G. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div></strong><br />The Redmi 12 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, a relatively new processor in its price range, and its performance is surprisingly impressive.<br /><br />In my testing, the Redmi 12 achieved a Geekbench score of 783 for single-core performance and 1898 for multi-core performance.<br /><br />Gaming performance on the Redmi 12 is notably good. I tested it with COD: Mobile, running the game smoothly on high-quality graphics and very high frame rates. The flat display and strong internet connection contributed to a fluid gaming experience, making me feel almost invincible in the game. Even Asphalt 9 performed well, with no noticeable heating issues. However, gaming with a lower battery, especially under 25% and with maxed out settings at a 90Hz refresh rate, may lead to some warmth on the device, as the vapor chamber cooling might struggle to keep up.<br /><br />The variant I have comes with 8GB of RAM and an optional RAM boost of 4GB, which surprisingly made a difference, especially with heavier apps. The smartphone was able to handle them for longer periods without any noticeable slowdowns.<br /><br />During my two weeks of usage, the Redmi 12 demonstrated lightning-fast boot-up speeds, whether launching heavy apps or lightweight ones like calculator and weather<br /><br />As for storage, the variant with me offers 256GB of internal storage, which should be more than sufficient for most users. However, if you prefer using cloud storage solutions, the 128GB option should also be enough.<br /><br />The battery performance of the Redmi 12 Pro stands out as its strongest feature, thanks to its 5000mAh battery. On heavy usage days involving camera usage, constant social media activity, and all-day content consumption, the smartphone provided an average screen on time of 5 hours. The primary camera is a 50MP sensor which is paired with a dedicated portrait sensor. Better yet, the camera can hold details respectably across 1X, 6X, and 10X digital zoom. <br /><br />Portrait shots from the device are decent, with the 2MP depth sensor adding value to the setup. The edge detection is satisfactory, and I also liked the black-and-white portrait shots from the camera. <br /><br />Low light performance from the camera is decent, but you will compromise on details on most days. The output can be grainy, even with the night mode on, and the prolonged post-processing of the image gets annoying. Some casual shots are not a problem, but expecting quality shots might lead to disappointment. <br /><br />The video output from the Redmi 12 maxes out at 1080P 30 fps, which is not stellar but not shabby either. Yes, it’s not meant for professionals to shoot videos, but coupled with features like dual video, your experience becomes wholesome.<br /><br />The front camera is a 8MP shooter, which holds up well. With proper lighting, the color reproduction and the details are on point, but the results dip in low lighting conditions. The AI here as well works smoothly, and the alterations here do not look fake but rather enhance the output. The edge detection in portrait mode is also spot on. <br /><br />The selfie camera can also record 1080P videos at 30fps, and the results are really good for the price, especially paired with the crisp audio output. <br /><br /><strong>Verdict</strong><br />Redmi 12 5G proves to be a solid entry level device for buyers looking at budget options. The smartphone gets the basics right with a big display, decent processor and an efficient battery life. However it does lag behind in terms of camera performance. <br /><br />However, if you can stretch your budget, then you should check out the Redmi Note 12 or the Nord CE 3 Lite. Both the devices deliver a more balanced performance without putting a dent in your pocket. <br /><br /><br /><br />

Redmi 12 5G Review - An efficient entry level device but there are compromises

<ul><li>Redmi has launched the Buds 4 Active to take on the likes of OnePlus and Boat.</li><li>The buds are priced at ₹1,399</li><li>The buds feature 12mm bass pro drivers which promise superior performance.</li></ul>Along with the Xiaomi Pad 6 on June 13, the house of Mi has also introduced a new pair of TWS buds. The Redmi Buds 4 Active are making an entry into a clustered market, where we get new options virtually everyday. <br /><br />While there are dedicated audio brands like Boat, Boult and Mivi dominating this segment, smartphone brands have also marked their presence. From <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/oppo-enco-air3-tws-buds-review-looks-good-sounds-better/articleshow/97577176.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Oppo Enco Air 3</a> to , <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/oneplus-nord-buds-2-review-india-price/articleshow/99242793.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Oneplus Nord Buds 2</a> and even the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/gadgets/news/redmi-buds-3-lite-review-decent-audio-quality-choppy-gesture-support/articleshow/93273676.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Redmi Buds 3 Lite</a> , this market is booming. <br /><br />At this time, Redmi Buds 4 Active promises a revised audio experience, but does it stand out? And how well does it perform against the Nord Buds 2? I tend to shift towards well executed stick designs because my ears are outwards. Hence, no matter what TWS bud I use, it tends to fall off. This is not the case with the Buds 4 Active, since they are able to sit perfectly in my ears. However, if there are excessive moments like workouts, I find myself sticking them back in more often than not. <br /><br />The buds come with three additional pairs of ear tips, adding to the convenience. I have used the default tips though and they have worked well for me. <br /><br />The buds are also very light, so if you are clumsy be a bit more careful so that you don’t lose them.<br />              <div type="image" title="The TWS Buds are comfortable and responsive." msid="100957780" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The TWS Buds are comfortable and responsive.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The Buds 4 Active also supports touch gestures. Offering a fairly basic menu of gestures Buds 4 Active are easy to understand. A simple tap means play or pause, a longer tap means accessing voice assistant and a double tap lets you shuffle the playlist. The gestures work well at most times, but I did find them missing out when my fingers were sweaty. <br /><br />Here it’s important to mention the buds are in fact IPX4 sweat and splash resistant. A common but important expectation from a product of this category.<br />Unfortunately, we can’t set custom gestures here, unlike the Nord Buds 2 where we get a dedicated app for customisation. The supported app situation isn’t something to bother about in this area, but it does have certain implications which I will cover in next sections. <br /><br />Moving now to the case, which sports a rather generic design. While purists might not like it, but I believe in - why fix when not broken? Ideology.<br /><br />It’s an ergonomic design, making the case portable and easy to carry around. The case is lightweight, even with the buds, so carrying it in your pocket isn’t a problem. There is a LED indicator at the bottom denoting connectivity, which comes in handy. <br /><br />At the bottom you will find the USB Type-C charging port, which is placed conveniently for access. <br /><br /><br /><strong>Connectivity</strong><br />Redmi Buds 4 Active can be connected in multiple ways, of course all are dependent on bluetooth. <br /><br />First the more conventional way, to add the buds in your bluetooth devices on your smartphone. It’s simple: you go to the bluetooth menu and then wait for it to pop up. It works well and shows up quickly. I used this method to connect it with my iPhone and the process was a breeze. <br /><br />Second way is Android only - Fast Pair. It essentially means the buds will pop up on your Android device in close range. I tried it out with Google Pixel 7a and the OnePlus 9RT both worked well. <br /><br />While the process to connect is easy, the buds do miss out on multi-device connectivity. This means you can’t connect the buds simultaneously to say a laptop and your smartphone. This is a major dud for me. By the virtue of being a budget offering I can cut some slack here, but then again I hope someone breaks this barrier. <br /><br /><strong>Audio Performance<br />              <div type="image" title="The audio quality of the buds is solid." msid="100957950" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The audio quality of the buds is solid. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /></strong>The Redmi Buds 4 Active features 12mm drivers which are in line with Nord Buds 12.4mm drivers. <br /><br />The buds emit a powerful and remarkably clear sound. The audio output possesses a satisfying level of bass, not excessively thumping but substantial enough for you to notice and appreciate.<br /><br />The optimal audio experience is achieved when the volume is set at 70%. At this level, you can discern the vocals and instruments distinctly. However, raising the volume beyond this point results in a noticeable loss of detail and distortion in the audio.<br /><br />The lack of a dedicated customisation app starts bothering here. We do have dedicated hardware to take care of multiple profiles but we don’t have the resources to do it. This is a miss in my opinion. Yes most customers won’t require it, but having an option also helps in developing habits for the end consumer. <br /><br />I was pleasantly surprised by the satisfactory calling experience provided by the buds, which was on par with the Nord Buds. The audio quality was crisp, and the microphone performed flawlessly. However, I must admit that budget TWS buds still fall short in terms of microphone quality compared to high-quality wired earphones, such as my regular wired Apple ear plugs. <br /><br />The buds promise a battery life of 30 hours, with the case. The real time number is around 25 hours depending on the usage. In real terms for a light user, it should last an entire week before you plug it-in. I was using it to attend calls, listen to music and watch content, hence I had to charge it once every 3 days. <br /><br />The buds do support fast charging wherein you can get a 90 minutes of battery in 10 minutes of plugging in. This feature comes in handy more often than not, especially when you are getting late and don’t have time to plug in the buds. <br /><br /><strong>Verdict</strong><br />Redmi Buds 4 Active are a decent option in the TWS buds space. The strength of the product lies in solid audio performance, fast pair option and decent battery life. It is what I call a safe product. <br /><br />But if you are more open minded, and don’t mind learning a few new tricks then I suggest checking out OnePlus Nord Buds 2 as well. <br /><br /><br /><br />

Redmi Buds 4 Active Review: Top audio quality but no customisation available

Priced under ₹15,000, the Redmi Pad is the brand's alternative for a budget tablet aimed at the populated segment. This ambition can be credited to the success of the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/news/xiaomi-pad-5-review-is-it-best-android-alternate-to-ipad-air/articleshow/91647787.cms"> Xiaomi Pad 5</a>, a premium tablet that is priced slightly higher and has slightly superior internals. <br /><br />Redmi claims this tablet is developed with both performance and content consumption in focus. A case in point is the MediaTek Helio G99 gaming SoC and 10.61-inch screen with 90Hz refresh rate. The composition looks good on paper, but there are several such options in the market. The real question is whether it can turn out to be the best of all in its segment. Is it? Let’s find out.<br /><br /><strong>Price &amp; Availability</strong><br />Redmi Pad is available in 3 configurations. There is a base variant with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage offered at ₹14,999 Then there is a variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage offered at a price of ₹17,999. Finally, a variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is coming for ₹19,999. All the variants are WiFi only. It is available on Amazon and Redmi’s D2C websites. <br /><br /><strong>Design</strong><br />Redmi Pad borrows design language from the Xiaomi Pad 5. Like the Mi Pad 5, Redmi Pad feels solid to hold, and its flat edges provide an additional grip without digging into hands. Sporting a slate design, the Redmi Pad is thin at just around half an inch and feels premium. I asked my peers to guess the price based on design; most thought it to be a more expensive tablet when they held it for the first time.<br />        <div type="image" title="Redmi Pad sports a slim build" msid="94644220" hostid="261"></div><br />Given the massive screen size, it has a considerable amount of real estate. This is taken care of with the even weight distribution that Redmi has done on the tablet. Another important characteristic when it comes to holding a tablet.<br />        <div type="image" title="Redmi Pad is easy to hold" msid="94644260" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Redmi Pad 5 is easy to hold&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />I am using the Graphite Grey colour variant; for me, it is the best out of the options available. The tablet looks fine in this colour scheme. There is a moonlight silver and a mint green colour available as well.<br /><br />The tablet comes with IP52 water and dust resistant rating, which is re-ensuring since you can travel with it without any worries.<br /><br />Redmi will also be providing cover cases for the Redmi Pad. I have yet to get my hands on it, but I will update the section if I get to use them.<br /><br />Other design elements include a power button on the top right of the tablet while holding it in portrait orientation. It changes its position to the top left when you put the tablet in landscape. In both cases, the power button is easy to reach.<br /><br />Similarly, there are volume rockers on the right when the tablet is in portrait orientation, meaning the top left in landscape orientation. Like the power button, they are also tactile and easily accessible. <br /><br />I would like to point out that Redmi Pad 5’s power button doesn’t house a fingerprint sensor. The tablet comes with face unlock instead. You don’t get a 3.5mm headphone jack on the tablet, which is fine with me, but it could be an important feature for some. I use TWS buds and prefer them over wired earphones. But if you want to use wired earphones, you can use a Type-C to 3.5mm converter. When asked about skipping the 3.5mm jack here to the Redmi product team, they answered that it is a solvable concern.<br /><br />We also see a micro SD card slot on the tablet, which supports upto 1 TB of storage. Spoiler alert, there is no SIM card slot here, I share my opinions on this in the performance section. <br /><br /><strong>Display</strong><br />Perhaps the most important aspect of a tablet is its display. The more common use case for a tablet is content consumption, and Redmi has taken care of it. The massive screen size, colour accuracy, and generally favourable HDR results in the beautiful image output. <br /><br />The cherry on top is that Redmi Pad supports HD content for OTT apps like Prime Video and Netflix. So, there are no major compromises on the visual quality. Watching Andor on Disney+ Hotstar was fun on the Redmi Pad. The space battles, chase sequences and low-light shots all looked great. This surprised me, considering darker frames didn’t have a milky tint to them despite it being a budget LCD screen. <br /><br />The screen is also great for reading, especially with the right weight and design. I surfed through multiple web pages and read books on the tablet, the experience of which was satisfying. <br /><br />Redmi Pad has a peak brightness of 400 Nits which is apt for a tablet. The screen can get really bright indoors. But it might look underwhelming on a bright day if you plan on taking it to a picnic and watching something there. <br /><br />A hit and a miss is the keyboard on the Redmi Pad. I have never been comfortable typing on a tablet; unfortunately, Redmi Pad couldn’t change that either. The situation improves if you put it flat on a table and type. But punching the screen while holding it upright is a task. Hence I avoided typing notes here and mostly relied on voice prompts.<br /><br />A solution to this is using a compatible Bluetooth keyboard with the tablet. I, however, would suggest using a laptop to save time. <br /><br />Another point to note is the lack of a bundled stylus with the Redmi Pad. This is not a surprise since the competition in this price bracket also skips it. However, the tablet does work with 3rd party stylus’ available in the market. <br /><br />I would like to point out that the auto-brightness feature feels choppy on the Redmi Pad. It usually misses out on adjusting the brightness according to the frame on the tablet. Forcing me to shut it off altogether. I feel this can be taken care of with an OTA update. <br /><br />Redmi Pad 5’s display supports a max refresh rate of 90Hz. Which I found to be useful for both reading and gaming. My only gripe with the display is the lack of an adaptive refresh rate. The speaker set-up here is fairly loud and provides even sound distribution. In my experience, the speakers here felt louder than the ones on Xiaomi Pad 5. They do retain a certain amount of oomph to them and also retain details in the audio at low to mid-volume levels. The detail might get lost at higher volumes, but if you are watching something with your peers, you won’t complain. <br /><strong><br />User Experience</strong><br />Redmi Pad 5 runs on Android 12 out of the box paired with MiUI. As we observed on the Xiaomi Pad 5, the MiUI skin here is optimised to work for a tablet. For instance, you won’t find an app drawer by default; instead, the apps remain on the home screen. And since then, it has been my primary device for setting up calendars. Given the real estate on the screen, the split screen functionality works like a charm.<br />      <div type="image" title="MiUI is optimized for productivity on the Redmi Pad" msid="94644605" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;MiUI is optimized for productivity on the Redmi Pad&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The MiUi allows you to open upto two apps simultaneously along with two floating windows. A general consumer might rarely use it, but it’s always better to have a feature of this nature on board. <br /><br />Over the years, Xiaomi has refined the MiUI, and this product keeps up with the tradition. There is no unnecessary bloatware on the tablet, a surprising sight. It’s clean and easy on the eyes as well.<br /><br />The animations are classic Xiaomi, but I am not complaining since they look good on this screen. <br /><br />However, there is one area where the Redmi tablet suffers from the same problem as the Xiaomi Pad 5. The lack of a fingerprint sensor. The Redmi tab uses face unlock or pin, but it is not a fancy mechanism. It employs the front camera to unlock, and as expected, it doesn’t work 100% of the time. And I found myself punching in my password more often than not. <br /><br /><strong>Performance</strong><br />Redmi Pad 5 runs on MediaTek Dimensity G99 SoC. Indeed a fresh chipset in the tablet space, it delivers a fiery performance on the tablet. In my six days of usage, I am yet to see lags or ugly app crashes. <br /><br />The variant with me packs in 6GB of RAM, which is more than enough to handle the applications on board. Considering most of them are, in fact, OTT apps. But beyond that, switching between web pages or multi-tasking with multiple apps in the background was also not a problem. <br /><br />The RAM is also able to hold applications for longer periods. I would generally hop between Netflix and Youtube. And even with the constant switching, I would land up on the exact frame where I had left. <br /><br />Now Redmi claims that the Redmi tab can handle gaming as well. I gave it a shot, and the experience was just about okay. Yes, the tablet can handle games like COD Mobile, with respectable graphic settings of HD. But the form factor, by default, limits the experience of truly enjoying a game. This isn’t a complaint but a fact, Tablets of this size are not meant for gaming. Or at least serious gaming. <br /><br />I also ran a Geekbench 5 computing benchmark test on the tablet to check the gaming prowess. It did fairly well for a tablet with a single core score of 551 and a multi-core score of 1894.<br />      <div type="image" title="Geekbench score for the Redmi Pad" msid="94644678" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Geekbench score for the Redmi Pad&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />Frankly, the game I enjoyed playing here was Hill climb racing since I could place the tablet over a table and enjoy it. Another fun game to play with my peers was Ludo. Yes, these are basic, boring games, but playing them on a big screen adds to the fun. <br /><br />The storage on my variant is 128GB. It is enough to store around 20+ movies in Full HD resolution across apps and games. If you are planning to go for the Redmi Tab, I would also suggest going with 128GB. <br /><br />Now the Redmi pad doesn’t have an option for a SIM card slot. Yes, there are certain benefits of having a SIM on board, primarily data connectivity. It allows you to watch or download content on the go. Yes, you can also make phone calls, but tablets have never been the best option to dial up a number, in my opinion. <br /><br />To me, skipping on the option entirely shows the priority here. Redmi Pad has all the features to make it a content consumption device. Hence you can download all your movies or TV shows and go about your day. Also, I feel the majority of the usage for the Redmi Pad will be indoors. <br /><br />This doesn’t mean skipping the SIM card slot on Xiaomi Pad 5 was justified. <br /><br />Before closing this section, it’s important to talk about battery life. The Redmi Pad features an 8000 mAh battery. And in all fairness, it is very difficult to kill it. For the last five days, it is my primary device to watch content, and I have plugged it in only twice. If you are a light user, the mileage can come up to 3 days. The tablet supports 18W fast charging but considering it is a big cell, it takes about two and a half hours for a 0-100% charge. <br /><br /><strong>Camera</strong><br />Cameras are never a strong point in a budget tablet, and the case here is no different. The shots lose out on details with the colours generally oversaturated. The performance does improve a bit in natural lighting conditions, but in no means are they worthy of being posted on your social media. <br /><br />The primary camera can record 1080P videos at 30fps. The footage lacked detail, and the colour tones were warmer. However, the audio quality was clear. <br /><br />All’s not bad here, though. The camera app comes with an in-built scanner which can be used to scan documents. Considering we do use our tablets to store files and documents, this comes in handy.<br /><br />The front camera is an 8MP sensor as well. The images also lack detail, and the colours are cooler. Aggressively priced and packed in just about the right features you seek in an entertainment device. If you are looking for a tablet to watch content on strictly, then this can be a great choice. It’s a good alternative for kids or students to watch videos or for home studies. However, if you are a creative looking for a device for editing pictures or creating illustrations, then this isn’t the right choice for you.<br /><br /><br /><br />

But there’s also a 4GB and 64GB version of the devices priced at ₹11,999. <br /><br />The Redmi Note 7 is a little more expensive with the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage options costing ₹13,999 and the most premium model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage priced at ₹16,999. <br /><br /><strong>Redmi Note 7 vs Redmi Note 7 Pro<br /></strong><br />Both phones come with a 6.3-inch full-HD+ display but the Redmi Note 7 series biggest selling point — 48-megapixel camera — is absent from the Note 7. <br /><br />When the phone launched in China, the feature was present on both devices. Bluetooth and USB-C will eventually be the norm, but for now, taking the jack away mostly gives audio companies a way to drive more revenue. It also gives them less incentive to build those affordable diamonds in the rough.</p><p>I was reminded of this after spending a few weeks with the <a href="http://www.mi.com/en/headphonesprohd/" target="_blank">latest in-ear headphones</a> from Chinese tech firm Xiaomi, the Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro HD. They've got a terrible name, and they only work with the old headphone jack. But in both sound and design, they are way better than their $40 price tag suggests.</p><p>Though Xiaomi is best known for making smartphones, it's built a bit of a reputation for producing these sort of quality earphones on the cheap. Its "Piston" line is <a href="http://www.head-fi.org/t/735775/the-xiaomi-pistons-thread-2-0" target="_blank">well-known</a> among cheapie audiophiles, and its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-cheap-in-ear-headphones-xiaomi-2016-4" target="_blank">Mi Hybrid earphones</a> were a nice little travel pair for bass lovers.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Like all of those predecessors, the Mi Pro HD neither looks nor feels like it costs less than $40. They've got this silver, aluminum finish that's handsome, but not showy. There's a handy three-button remote for taking calls, pausing and skipping tracks, and changing volume, though the skipping and volume features only seem to work on Android. And while I can't guarantee the longevity of any pair of budget headphones, the rubbery cable here has shown no signs of fraying in the two months I've spent taking it in and out of my pockets.<p>It's all very comfortable, too. Though the Mi Pro HD are made of metal, they don't drag on the ears. The speakers themselves are angled, so they slide in and stay in without much effort. To put it anecdotally, the low weight and soft rubber tips allowed me to wear them for a whole five-hour flight without issue.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The downside is that they don't block out much external noise. It's not the worst if you play things at a louder volume, but in a noisy environment, bits of the outside world will creep their way in. They're not sweatproof, either, so don't expect to take them running.<p>Plus, these being in-ear headphones, there's always a chance that the fit might not jive with you as easily as they did with me. Xiaomi puts four different-sized eartips in the box, which is great, but some people may have to tinker to find a sound and fit they enjoy.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Whatever the case, that sound is very good. It's a mildly "<a href="https://medium.com/@Xander51/audio-dictionary-warm-vs-neutral-vs-bright-and-the-role-your-brain-plays-in-all-this-2ec761759f7b#.j2zzrkg67" target="_blank">bright</a>" signature, so the upper midrange and lower treble are usually pushed a little more than usual. That means things like guitar leads, cymbal crashes, and vocals are most prominent, but they stay clear and energetic throughout. There's a surprising amount of width to it, too, so you can separate the different parts of a song. I find it particularly fun with rock - a punk track like PUP's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVuB1ZASrGw" target="_blank">DVP</a>" just explodes, but the instrumentation doesn't bleed into itself.<p>All that said, there's usually <em>enough</em> low-end if a song calls for it. When the bass blasts through the door on Run the Jewels' "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jl-BeR4M4c" target="_blank">Hey Kids</a>," it's not earth-shattering, but it still hits you. While this may be a no-go for Beats-loving bassheads, it's not sloppy, and it's not so weak as to make the whole sound unbalanced.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>They still cost $40, though, so there are blemishes. The earphones themselves are actually built by another firm, 1More, whose <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/1more-triple-driver-review-best-in-ear-headphones-under-100-2016-9" target="_blank">Triple Driver in-ears</a> are a similarly excellent value. Compared to those, the Mi Pro HD don't have the same level of depth or sharpness. They also get harsh if you crank the volume to the max, as "ess" sounds get too piercing for comfort. This is when that poor sound isolation becomes a problem.<p>The Triple Driver headphones cost $100, though. For less than half of that, the Mi Pro HD are at least comparable in terms of clarity, crispness, and comfort.</p><p>There's a question of whether or not you should buy <em>any</em> 3.5mm headphone in an increasingly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-7-headphone-dongle-review-2016-9" target="_blank">dongle-infested</a> world, and these may not be the absolute best you can buy for $40, but value like this just doesn't exist with Lightning, USB-C, or Bluetooth pairs yet. All of those have some extra cost attached today - Apple's <a href="https://mfi.apple.com/MFiWeb/getFAQ.action#1-7" target="_blank">licensing fees</a> drive up Lightning pairs slightly, the USB-C market is nascent, and good wireless tech is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-7-wireless-headphones-sales-chart-2016-9" target="_blank">still sold at a premium</a>.</p><p>3.5mm headphones may be fading away, but they're a commodity. As such, they make it easier to find value for money. The Mi Pro HD are a late reminder of that.
