The social and streaming platforms are hungry for news programming because it can help build a loyal audience, and that means more eyeballs and ad dollars for <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> companies.</p><p>This past week, my colleague Ashley Rodriguez wrote about how The New York Times is applying lessons from its popular "The Daily" podcast to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-times-talks-prestige-tv-hulu-show-the-weekly-2019-5">a TV news show, "The Weekly," that's due out June 2 on FX.</a></p><p>On May 29, NBC News will launch its streaming news service, NBC News Now, that will go up against incumbent live streaming services from ABC and CBS.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There's a big opportunity. A <a href="https://livestream.com/blog/live-video-statistics-livestream">survey by Vimeo and New York magazine</a> found news was the most popular type of video content that people watch live, watched by 56%, followed by conferences and concerts at 43%.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The catch is, no matter the platform, news is still expensive to produce and can be controversial, putting off risk-averse advertisers. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">There's also no standard way for media companies to measure their audiences across all the streaming platforms, which holds back <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> growth. But the Delancey Tee does sing for its $28 supper. Off the bat, it's a thicker, cooler-to-the-touch material that has a weighty drape. The sleeves are elongated, and the sage is a beautiful and subdued tone. The fit is loose but not sloppy, and since that's by design, its collar sits high as it would on a regular T-shirt, not low and stretched out like an oversized sleep shirt. The French Terry is super soft and surprisingly thick, and the elastic drawcord makes them customizable, and they're perfect combination of slouchy vs. fitted. The back pocket is a cute touch, and while I'm not sold on the bottle-nosed shaped hem on the shorts, it doesn't particularly bother me here - partly because it's executed well, and partly because they're too cozy to care if it wasn't. I first put on the Prospect Tee under the impression that I'd only wear it at home, but I immediately knew that I could wear it anywhere. It's made from a super-soft blend of cotton and modal and it fits perfectly. After wearing it at home for a few days, I washed it and wore it to work and was comfortable all day long. Even at $28, the shirt is worth every penny. Although you could stock up on a bunch of $6 shirts, those are almost disposable. The Brooklinen Prospect Tee is a shirt you'll want to keep and wear forever. </p><h3><a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=999&amp;u=1088116&amp;m=64892&amp;urllink=www.brooklinen.com%2Fproducts%2Fbergen-jogger%3Fvariant%3D17366714187866" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Bergen Joggers, $75</a></h3><p>There are few better feelings than taking your pants off after a long day and putting on something more comfortable. My old college sweatpants used to do the trick, but the Brooklinen Bergen Joggers have been a real game changer. Just like the T-shirt, they're super soft and comfortable. I like that they're lightweight, non-restrictive, and have decent-sized pockets for either putting my hands in or carrying stuff around. Brooklinen, best known for its ultra-comfortable sheets, is now in the loungewear game - here's how they stack up

Some media buyers say their clients are spending more on the ephemeral-messaging app.</p><p>Parent company Snap, which reports its second-quarter earnings after the market closes on July 23, has seen its stock price soar nearly 200% since its lowest point in 2018 after a redesign fiasco.</p><p>While analysts have been encouraged by the app's user-base stabilizing and innovations in <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>, content and gaming, advertisers are lured by its broader reach and improved ad-tracking tools.</p><h2><strong>Advertisers are increasing their ad spending on Snapchat</strong></h2><p>The company is on track to generate $1.36 billion in net worldwide ad revenue, up 30% over last year, according to eMarketer, and four ad buyers told Business Insider that clients' spending on Snap has grown year-over-year. </p><p>The increase for 360i clients is across the board, said Doug Rozen, chief media officer at the agency. Travis Freeman, EVP of media for VaynerMedia, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/13/snaps-stock-up-more-than-200percent-from-its-low-and-is-huge-winner-in-2019.html">told CNBC that the agency had boosted spending on Snap by about 20%.</a></p><p>Another media buyer said that several clients were spending 30-40% more on the platform, at the expense of platforms like Pinterest, Twitter, and Reddit. </p><p>Jessica Dooley, social practice lead at Mindshare, said that one of the agency's biggest CPG clients had doubled its spend compared to 2018.</p><p><em><strong>Read More:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-advertisers-increasing-recurring-spends-on-snapchat-2019-4">Advertisers have long considered Snap to be an experimental buy. Fresh data suggests that's beginning to change.</a></em></p><p><span>"T</span>hose that have been activating or testing-and-learning over the past couple of years continue to do so, but today, Snap has become more of a staple in the consideration set for brands versus last year," said Dooley. "It's become table stakes." </p><p>Stephanie Bohn, CMO at VidMob, agreed, saying her company has seen a 50% lift in the revenue it makes from Snapchat-related work versus a year ago. VidMob helps brands create custom video ads for platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. </p><p>"We do a lot of work with the verticals you would expect, including CPG and retail, and are seeing an uptick with sectors like fintech, auto and travel," said Bohn. "We've seen a 2x lift in volume of Snap Lens projects."</p><p>Independent digital media buyer David Herrmann said Snapchat's CPMs of $2 to $3 have gone up slightly, an indication that more advertisers are gravitating to the platform.</p><h2>Snap's new features are drawing advertisers</h2><p>Data from MediaRadar showed that 58% of companies that advertised on Snapchat in the first quarter of 2019 are renewing their spending, up from 17% in 2018.</p><p>Advertisers have been drawn to the platform as its shift to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-advertisers-increasing-recurring-spends-on-snapchat-2019-4">programmatic has started to stabilize</a>, and with upgrades Snap has made to its ads manager, with features such as target-cost bidding and new bulk-uploading capabilities.</p><p>Snap has improved advertisers' ability to improve their reach, targeting, and measurement, putting it on a par with larger, more established rivals.</p><p>The company has also rolled out AR filters and gaming features for advertisers, grown its sales organization under new chief business officer Jeremi Gorman, and updated its Android app.</p><p>"All of these updates give users more opportunity to spend time on the platform, and therefore make it easier for advertisers to reach audiences," said Mindshare's Dooley. </p><p>These changes are helping Snapchat attract a broader base of advertisers, from performance-oriented DTC brands using <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/direct-to-consumer-brands-embrace-story-ads-on-snapchat-discover-2019-5">Story Ads on Discover</a>, to smaller direct-response advertisers and large advertisers. While its year-over-year spending volume increased 12% in the second quarter of 2019, its share of the social ad market declined to 5.4% in June 2019 from 7.1% a year earlier, according to Standard Media Index.</p><p>While Mindshare advertisers are spending more on Snap, that shift doesn't mean they are pulling from other platforms, said Dooley. </p><p>"We haven't seen our social spend decrease drastically or at all for other platforms," she said. The brands upending retail, an exclusive invite, and hot cannabis startups

<p class="p1">The startup's <keyword id="6363690" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="strategy">strategy</keyword> hits lots of the items small businesses use to compete with larger ones. It cuts out middlemen and sells exclusively online so it can dramatically reduce prices, despite selling a high-end product; employs a marketing campaign targeted at a young demographic; and uses the sort of subscription model that's been so successful for companies like Birchbox and Dollar Shave Club.</p>
<p class="p1">Now its new crowdfunding effort aims to build a system that will connect users via video, if they choose, to an actual human being who will walk them through their products, which include "The World's Most Comfortable Underwear" and other basics like t-shirts and socks for both men and women. </p>
<p class="p1"><span>"We really wanted to take the <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> model of shopping offline in a store and take it online. There are very few online stores that have that personal touch," CEO Jonathan Shokrian told Business Insider.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>The company hopes this model of customer service will really differentiate itself from its competition. "We were not happy with the status quo of customer support," Shokrian said <a href="We%20were%20not%20happy%20with%20the%20status%20quo%20of%20customer%20support.">in a recent Bloomberg interview.</a></span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>The company chose to crowdfund customer service to do market research at no cost, to figure out if it was something that people were actually interested in using. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>Small businesses and new startups frequently don't have the luxury of trying out a business and then folding if it doesn't work out. They need to be as certain as they can before making a bet. This is a way to reduce both the market and financial uncertainty for a new venture that nobody's really tried before. </span></p>
<p class="p1">Both the subscription model and this personal face-to-face online customer service are a bet that when people invest in higher quality basics like underwear, they'll keep coming back. Especially if they figure out the size and cut that works for them with the help of someone who really knows the product. </p>
<p class="p1">The customer service reps will be able to walk people through the best sizes based on their build and what's on offer, along with what styles might be better for working out versus everyday wear, Shokrian says. </p>
<p class="p1">The majority of the money customers contribute - the company's hoping for $30,000 and has raised more than $10,000 - will go toward building out technology for the platform that will provide the video service. </p>
<p class="p1">Rewards for people who help with funding range from products to (for the largest contribution) a fully stocked vending machine with underwear, socks, and shirts. </p>
<p class="p1">The campaign's part of an ethos where the company thinks of itself as a tech startup as much as an apparel company, and is as focused on the shopping experience as on the product.</p>
<h2 class="p1">The biggest challenge</h2>
<p class="p1">"The biggest challenge is on the tech side, finding great talent," Shokrian says. "It's easy to find good people; it's really hard to find great people. For us the biggest challenge is making sure we use the dollars we've raised already through angel investors well, and making sure we're hiring people we feel will add the most value and help take us to the next level where we can raise our next round."</p>
<p class="p1">They face a huge amount of competition from bigger companies that can offer much larger incentives and benefits.</p>
<p class="p1">Upstarts have to rely on their vision to sell people who could easily work for more elsewhere. </p>
<p class="p1"><span>"We want to be the next great basic apparel company both off and online," he says. "We're doing a lot of innovative things to get us there. We try to get people behind our vision, and once they see where we want to take it, people get excited."</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

Though the company has primarily focused on growing its men's business from a simple undershirt to a whole line of clothing, it's been fielding requests for women's underwear since its launch. </p><p>The number of requests kept growing, but co-founder Erin Fujimoto says that the real turning point was seeing a Facebook photo from a woman wearing Tommy John boxer briefs, with the caption, "Tommy John underwear is the most comfortable underwear I've ever worn." There's a generous amount of fabric in the Cheeky, which usually lends the risk of bunching and shifting, but it wasn't until I got home and thought about it did I realize I didn't have to awkwardly adjust my underwear the entire day. </p><p>Meanwhile, the Air Thong was lightweight and felt barely there. Certain outfits dictate wearing a thong, often prompting women to give up on wearing the outfit altogether for fear of how uncomfortable the thong will be. It's so unbelievably soft and breathable. I have plans to buy at least a couple more in case Tommy John stops making them or one gives out and refuses to whiten in the future. At $36 it's definitely more than I'd normally spend on a tank top, but then again maybe that's why I was so shocked it could be this comfortable. <p class="p1">The startup's <keyword id="6363690" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="strategy">strategy</keyword> hits lots of the items small businesses use to compete with larger ones. It cuts out middlemen and sells exclusively online so it can dramatically reduce prices, despite selling a high-end product; employs a marketing campaign targeted at a young demographic; and uses the sort of subscription model that's been so successful for companies like Birchbox and Dollar Shave Club.</p>
<p class="p1">Now its new crowdfunding effort aims to build a system that will connect users via video, if they choose, to an actual human being who will walk them through their products, which include "The World's Most Comfortable Underwear" and other basics like t-shirts and socks for both men and women. </p>
<p class="p1"><span>"We really wanted to take the <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> model of shopping offline in a store and take it online. There are very few online stores that have that personal touch," CEO Jonathan Shokrian told Business Insider.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>The company hopes this model of customer service will really differentiate itself from its competition. "We were not happy with the status quo of customer support," Shokrian said <a href="We%20were%20not%20happy%20with%20the%20status%20quo%20of%20customer%20support.">in a recent Bloomberg interview.</a></span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>The company chose to crowdfund customer service to do market research at no cost, to figure out if it was something that people were actually interested in using. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>Small businesses and new startups frequently don't have the luxury of trying out a business and then folding if it doesn't work out. They need to be as certain as they can before making a bet. This is a way to reduce both the market and financial uncertainty for a new venture that nobody's really tried before. </span></p>
<p class="p1">Both the subscription model and this personal face-to-face online customer service are a bet that when people invest in higher quality basics like underwear, they'll keep coming back. Especially if they figure out the size and cut that works for them with the help of someone who really knows the product. </p>
<p class="p1">The customer service reps will be able to walk people through the best sizes based on their build and what's on offer, along with what styles might be better for working out versus everyday wear, Shokrian says. </p>
<p class="p1">The majority of the money customers contribute - the company's hoping for $30,000 and has raised more than $10,000 - will go toward building out technology for the platform that will provide the video service. </p>
<p class="p1">Rewards for people who help with funding range from products to (for the largest contribution) a fully stocked vending machine with underwear, socks, and shirts. </p>
<p class="p1">The campaign's part of an ethos where the company thinks of itself as a tech startup as much as an apparel company, and is as focused on the shopping experience as on the product.</p>
<h2 class="p1">The biggest challenge</h2>
<p class="p1">"The biggest challenge is on the tech side, finding great talent," Shokrian says. "It's easy to find good people; it's really hard to find great people. For us the biggest challenge is making sure we use the dollars we've raised already through angel investors well, and making sure we're hiring people we feel will add the most value and help take us to the next level where we can raise our next round."</p>
<p class="p1">They face a huge amount of competition from bigger companies that can offer much larger incentives and benefits.</p>
<p class="p1">Upstarts have to rely on their vision to sell people who could easily work for more elsewhere. </p>
<p class="p1"><span>"We want to be the next great basic apparel company both off and online," he says. "We're doing a lot of innovative things to get us there. We try to get people behind our vision, and once they see where we want to take it, people get excited."</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
