Amid the severe pollution gripping the national capital, <keyword id="19948557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-metro" source="keywords">Delhi Metro</keyword> recorded its highest-ever daily ridership on November 18, with a staggering 78.67 lakh passenger journeys, according to official data. The Magenta Line saw 6.19 lakh passengers, followed by the Green Line with 4.12 lakh commuters, 81,985 in Airport Line, 57,701 in Rapid Metro, and 50,128, in the Grey Line, as per the data. Thick grey haze continued to choke Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with pollution levels remaining alarmingly high at 488 in the 'severe plus' category. To encourage more people to use the metro in this scenario, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is running 60 extra trips on weekdays, offering more capacity than usual, an official statement said. The DMRC has recorded its 25 highest passenger journeys since August this year, the statement added. It emphasised that the more people opt for the metro over private vehicles, the greater the reduction in vehicular emissions, which will help improve the air quality of the city and its surrounding areas. In addition, the DMRC has introduced several measures to make travel more convenient for passengers, the statement read. <ul class="summary-list"><li>More than a quarter of US metros are still recovering from COVID-era job losses, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported.</li><li>These are chiefly located in Rust Belt states, the South, and Northeast.</li></ul>As analysts clash over when the next recession will befall the US, large swaths of the country are still bogged down in the previous downturn.That's as labor markets continue to struggle in more than a quarter of US metros, having never reversed COVID-era job losses, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported this week. "More than four years have passed since the onset of the pandemic, which resulted in one of the sharpest and deepest economic downturns in U.S. history," the bank wrote in a <a href="https://libertystreeteconomics.newyorkfed.org/2024/05/many-places-still-have-not-recovered-from-the-pandemic-recession/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blog post</a>, adding: "Many of the places that have not regained the jobs lost were hit particularly hard by the pandemic, leaving a deeper hole to dig out of."At first glance, it would appear that US labor has won back its strength: By 2022, national employment undid the whopping 15% plummet it suffered two years prior. And today, unemployment remains below 4%.However, this recovery has been all but even, with certain regions never regaining the jobs they once had. Often, these are metro areas with slow-growth economies, and the lack of workers has only dampened recovery momentum, the Fed said.Grouped regionally, that includes the Rust Belt area, as well as sectors of the South, the note said. Delayed recoveries can also be found clustered in California, and Hawaii: "In fact, employment is still more than 5 percent below pre-pandemic levels in New Orleans, and more than 3 percent below in Honolulu and San Francisco. New York City, which suffered as much as 19% job loss, has now just barely regained its employment levels. But the city's service sector continues to lag."Some places in upstate New York were hit by a 'triple whammy' of slow growth leading up to the pandemic that has now resumed, a deeper hole when the pandemic hit, and a declining labor force," the bank wrote.<h3>Timing the next recession </h3>Today, the eroding labor market is sparking renewed downturn fears. Conditions were most recently illustrated by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-market-april-unemployment-rate-job-growth-wages-2024-5?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">April's jobs report</a>, when added positions came in well below expectations, and unemployment ticked up.In fact, one veteran analyst is convinced that a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-recession-outlook-job-market-cuts-labor-unemployment-hard-landing-2024-5">downturn is already here</a>, when measured by unemployment's three-month average. By this indicator, a recession started in October, confirmed further by accelerating job erosion, Danielle DiMartino Booth said."There's already been 22,000 job loss announcements in the month of May and it's still a fairly young month. So on a seasonal level, we're seeing a major pickup," the QI Research CEO told Bloomberg.Shrinking labor is also why analyst Frances Donald is betting on a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-downturn-outlook-us-economy-fed-pivot-interest-rate-cuts-2024-5">"proper downturn,"</a> which will prompt aggressive interest rate cuts."Just about everything in the labor market that explains where we are in the labor cycle is pointing to a deterioration," Donald said last Tuesday. "We're not saying it's a big crisis, we're calling for two quarters of negative GDP — Q3 and Q4, could be Q4 and Q1."But one expert is calling out a crisis. Wall Street veteran Gary Schilling told Business Insider to expect a coming job losses, as layoffs send the unemployment rate up between 5% to 7% this year.Meanwhile, he warns that any recession would hammer at overconfident investors, sending markets crashing up to 30%.

They moved to suburbs, exurbs, and rural areas in search of a more affordable, convenient life, driven in large part by housing costs.As major US cities have rebounded from pandemic lockdowns, that trend has slowed, but families with young kids are still fleeing, <a target="_blank" href="https://eig.org/families-exodus/">a new report</a> from the Economic Innovation Group found.The report found that the population of children under five years old in New York City fell 18% between April 2020 and July 2023, while the number of young children fell by 15% in Chicago's Cook County, 15% in San Francisco, and 14% in Los Angeles County in that same period.On average, large urban counties had a 3.9% in the number of kids under five between 2020 and 2021, 2.2% between 2021 and 2022, and 1.5% between 2022 and 2023.Big cities like New York have begun growing again since the pandemic, but those population gains are primarily due to a rise in immigrant residents and declining death rates, according to the report, which is based on US Census data published this month. Overall, domestic out-migration from big cities is still double the rate it was pre-pandemic."This stuck out as a big surprise to me," EIG policy analyst Connor O'Brien, who authored the report, told Business Insider. "This data is three years out from the start of the pandemic, cities have started to recover robustly on a bunch of different measures." But, he added, "Young families are just not coming back."This comes amid a general aging of the US population. The US birthrate <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/america-birth-rate-decline-a111d21b">is falling,</a> and the population of young children nationwide has dropped 4.6% since the pandemic, the EIG report noted. The population of young kids fell in two-thirds of the nation's counties since April 2020. In 2023 alone, the number of young kids fell in 58% of all counties.But large urban counties have lost young kids at almost double the national average rate. Birth rates in big cities have also fallen at about double the rate of rural birth rates over the last ten years, EIG found.All of this is pretty bad news for big cities, many of which are still struggling to fend off the so-called "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midwest-america-cities-downtown-crisis-office-apocalypse-urban-doom-loop-2023-6">urban doom loop</a>" in downtowns emptied of workers and facing shrinking tax bases. "Parents are opting out of living in big cities or deciding to still live there but have no kids," O'Brien said. "I think that sends a pretty depressing message about the growth prospects of those cities going forward because at the end of the day, people vote with their feet."EIG's analysis echoes other recent reports. Families with kids under six years old are more than twice as likely to leave New York City than families without young kids, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parents-children-fleeing-nyc-high-housing-daycare-costs-2024-6">the Fiscal Policy Institute found</a>. Families with kids six or older moved out of the city at the same rates as childless families, suggesting that the costs "uniquely associated with young children — childcare and the need for more space" are pushing families to leave, FPI, a left-leaning think tank, argued.O'Brien blames the exodus on a slew of factors, ranging from the popularity of remote and hybrid work to the <a target="_blank" href="https://eig.org/left-behind-places/?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20240708&amp;instance_id=128185&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=58846835&amp;segment_id=171563&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=33847c70fb45b38628c8b13c348dde58">surprisingly strong recent economic recovery</a> of many exurban and rural areas.The result? Some exurbs — particularly in the pro-development Sunbelt — are seeing young families flood in. That's the first time that's happened in all 50 cities since July 2022, when mortgage rates and home prices were shooting up in tandem as buyers scrambled to get into the market. The largest increase occurred in Anaheim, California, where prices jumped 20% year-over-year in April. Prices rose 15% in Detroit, and 14% in San Jose, California, the firm added. High borrowing costs and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/housing-market-predictions-2024">scarce inventory</a> have continued to keep housing costs buoyant.
